A day after Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told troops in Iraq they were in the "endgame" of their mission, President George W. Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq.
Bush is making the trip to celebrate new security agreements with Iraq, thank U.S. troops and meet with Iraqi leaders, the White House said as the president landed in Baghdad after a 10 1/2 hour flight.
The President is expected to meet with President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, as well as other top leaders of Iraq and the US military.
The visit to Iraq will be a short one, only a few hours on the ground.
High levels of security are in place for the visit and although the situation in the country has improved over recent months, it is still considered an extremely dangerous place for Mr Bush to go.

He gets to come home and claim “Victory”
Just long enough for a photo op, what no flight jacket? Where is the Mission Accomplished Banner?

I appreciate your sacrifice because nobody in my family had to serve!
I don’t pray that often but I DO pray that Bush returns safely. Else we have President Darth. [shudders]

Never mind I let Ossama live!
I just heard on Nice Polite Republicans that someone tried to burn down Caribou Barbie’s church.
So what happens to the Kurds now? I expect a lot of loyal Iraqi to immigrate here real soon.
I hope Texas likes them. I hope Bush knows that if we have our way they will move into his Whites Only neighborhood:)
A long with Katrina victims still waiting for new homes.
Let us not forget that Bush said one of the things he is going to miss most is AF 1. Nothing like going out cruising arpund
Great the Alaska Fire Pups should be getting a knock on the door soon. In Chicago losing candidates use to bomb their own head quarters to show how much the radical left hated them and whip up the conservative vote.
Aside from a photo op just what was accomplished? This is the most Photo friendly content adverse administration ever!
that is a verry scarry thought!
But I thought Iraq was a tremendous democracy where freedom rings, violence is a thing of the past, and where they look forward to a visit by the American Peace President, for he….is their savior? Huh. I’m confused.
This was accomplished, TCU:

See? ;-)
It’s a very dangerous place for Mr. Bush to go? Doesn’t that describe almost everywhere on Earth?
a reporter said he was dressed casually on the ‘de plane’ on the way there, wearing a ball cap that said ‘43′ on it. unreal. still self-promoting and yukkin’ it up i guess.
they showed footage of bush walking the gauntlet in front of iraki soldiers all lined up. he looked uncomfortable, the closest to a ‘perp walk’ that we’re gonna get i think.
the local am radio guy just played a gospel-style song called ‘who would jesus bomb?’. right before that he played one about sending a woman to washington to straighten it all out. ha.
Photo friendly? Well, lots of ops, but I think with all of the goofy pictures we’ve seen of him, dropping dogs, falling off bikes, tripping down the stairs at the Olympics, trying to open wrong/locked doors…not to mention he’s just plain hard to look at, maybe not so friendly. He has been good for a laugh, tho.
Hey Things. Hope you are doing well today.
I hope the AG explores the Bush family ties to the Ossama family:)
I wonder how many US soldiers were dragged kicking and screaming because they didn’t want to meet George Bush today when he got off the plane?
It was probably an act of God. /s

Oh, me too. ;-)
Maybe they didn’t get all the witches
I’m doing fine but I’m snowbound Seattle doesn’t have to many snowplows that and the drivers are not used to driving in snow so the best bet is to stay inside until it melts.
There is no use driving if your afraid the other drivers will lose control and side swipe you.
I got food for a few days.
We wouldn’t want anything to happen to Shrub, now would we?
Could you blame Her?
I can’t keep up with so many posts. On the left coast, it’s still really early. Maybe after I eat my cinnamon rolls, I’ll be smarter and quicker.
There are things that are eminently forgettable and I forgot that one. ;-)
Very wise choice. We got about 6 inches of snow here over Christmas in 1989 and you could have sold tickets to watch folks try to drive in it. Big, wide-tired SUVs and trucks doing doughnuts down the main street… Stay inside and be safe.
Not I ;-)
Smart to stay away from the crazies. Food for a few days? How long do the forecasters say you will have this frozen white stuff?
Please stay warm and safe.
Hope you keep your electricity, ’cause I appreciate reading your comments.
Those are the vehicles that are most likely to wind up in wrecks or in the ditch because the people who drive them think they are invincible.
Other possibilities are that the publicity-hungry Sarah recently heard the story of the Reichstag fire; that a new group of agnostic terrorists has sprung into action; or, that the church was deeply in debt and is insured.
Just a day don’t worry:)
It was suppose to be much worse.
It is snowing here currently about 4″ temperature is 7
clinton did it.
Of course! I should have thought of the Clenis right off the bat!
There is a 508 page report(PDF)…The Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR). Bush should be kept in Iraq and forced to walk around every day and look at what he did..not that he would care, but the Iraqi people might have some fun watching him sweat and maybe dodge IEDs or something similar.
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/p…..iginal.pdf
It was all a plan to invade for oil. A few key points to illustrate that it was never the plan to have proper reconstruction of Iraq.
- In the fall of 2001, Bush and Rumsfeld started planning the Iraq War Plan.
- Early in April 2003, Scooter Libby asked Bremer to lead the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) before Jay Garner arrived in Baghdad.
- On April 21/03, Gen Franks cancelled the deployment of 50,000 additional combat troops.
- May 6/03, at a private dinner, Bush told Bremer he was no longer in favour of a short occupation.
- Within days of arriving on May 12/03, Bremer disbanded the army. General Petraeous later said that the order to disband the army fueled the nascent insurgency in Iraq.
- Gen Franks during the spring and summer of 2003, withdrew US Army Engineer units that could have played significant roles in reconstruction.
- Reconstruction projects were not awarded until March 2004. The contracts were awarded to US/UK companies.
- Two oil contracts..Parsons Iraq Joint Venture..$800 million and KBR..$1.2 billion.
No surprise, but it was Rumsfeld that insisted that everything be run by Defense. The MIC is alive and well. Iraq was allowed to fall apart so that the US had the justification to stay and gain control of Iraq’s oil.
I am still concerned he try to sneak into Vermont before he leaves office .
I hope the full unexpurgated report gets out. One telling point is after Garner was appointed he told Rummy that reconstruction would cost at least $1 billion. Rummy said…”No way we’re gonna send a billion dollars into that place.”
And I hate to say this, but maybe they should start making people take off their shoes wherever Bush appears…otherwise he could end up like Imelda Marcos’ closet!
Iraqi throws shoes at Bush
Just heard that a member of the audience of Bushie and the President of Iraq in Baghdad THREW A SHOE at Bush that barely missed his head…this of course is the height of disrespect in the Middle East…
Bush apparently picked it up and quipped that it was a “size 10 1/2″…ever the joking locker room asshole our prez!
An Iraqi man throw a shoe at Bush’s head. That is an insult over there. Well, I’d say that was deep anger over here.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/polit…..-bush.html
Good on the Iraqi! Should have been something a little more substantial than a pair of shoes. He should not have been allowed to step on Iraqi soil; not after the death and destruction he brought to the Iraqi people.
When I read your comment about Imelda, I thought of ET in the closet with the stuffed animals. Bush isn’t that cute, though.
A longer report? I hope not ’cause it took a long time to read this one. It is so full of corruption and incompetence; it is sickening. Iraq is broken and the US broke it. That was the plan from the start..invade and occupy and control the oil.
A billion has turned out to be pocket change. No one knows how many millions just one member of the CPA scammed. The story of Robert J Stein Jr. starts on page 338 of the report.
Iraqi journalist throws shoes at Bush. Yet the Bush legacy road show endlessly continues, slouching toward Bethlehem while Bwana insists he never felt threatened by the attempted attack.
Interestingly, I think this incident says more about what Iraq has become than what Bush did to Iraq. A place where you can actually insult leaders and live to see another day. Ironically, an act of protest reassures the goals of the person he is protesting.
See the Dicta.
Dana Perino got a black eye from a microphone. Can we see a picture of that, too?
Bush looked a little scared after the episode; no smirk.
