Looks like the Greek riots have been contagious:
Protesters in Spain, Denmark and Italy smashed shop windows, pelted police with bottles and attacked banks this week, while in France, cars were set ablaze Thursday outside the Greek consulate in Bordeaux, where protesters scrawled graffiti warning about a looming "insurrection."…
…More demonstrations were set for Friday in Italy, France and Germany.
Still, the clashes have been isolated so far, and nothing like the scope of the chaos in Greece, which was triggered by the police killing of a teenager on Saturday and has ballooned into nightly scenes of burning street barricades, looted stores and overturned cars.
Here’s the question. When will Americans decide they’ve had enough and start rioting? I believe that Obama’s got about 6 to 8 months. At that point, if things aren’t getting better, I think there’ll be violence. The bailout was the key moment with respect to this. Giving away that much money, and getting nothing for it, is going to be the rallying cry for the disaffected. Americans imagine that "class war" means "the rich screwing the poor and calling it business as usual" but if Obama doesn’t do an FDR and save capitalism from its own excesses, I think Americans are going to learn the old mantra that the "only war is class war". Bankers got their bailout, they had best stop self-dealing and make that bailout work for everyone, or one day they may find that the 5% increase on credit card statement is getting stuffed forcibly down their collective throats.
People aren’t really wrapping their heads around how bad this is going to get, before it has a chance of getting better. I hope, and trust, that Obama understands this, and intends to make sure it doesn’t get so bad that Americans decide to follow the Greek example.

Where did you read that quote Ian? American or foreign press? just curious. I have no link.
And does the Republic Door and Window sit in count, kind of? I think it does.
I also am guessing that crime is going to go way up out of desperation. Don’t know about rioting…
I agree.
I keep seeing Hank in drag, yelling “Let them eat cake”, while being led up to the guillotine.
Lincoln declared that “labor can exist without capital, but… capital could never have existed without labor. Hence… labor is… greatly superior of capital.”
knitting.
hmmmm, kinda makes one wonder if the big boyz didn’t see this coming; hence the new order for deployment of active duty troops on u.s. soil… not to mention all those shiny new laws just waiting for an opportunity to be invoked.
You’ve all got to be kidding. Riot where? In the town square? In a locked down university? Americans only riot over sporting events and WalMart sales.
“People aren’t really wrapping their heads around how bad this is going to get, before it has a chance of getting better.”
It’s going to get better?
It’s a chicken egg thing if you ask me, is it going to get better without people ‘wrapping their heads around how bad it’s going to get’, no, I don’t think so.
Will people put out the effort to ‘wrap their heads around this’ before it gets absolutely desperate, no I don’t think so.
It sure looks as if we’re going to have to see those gates of hell before we decide to know what must be known.

People in this country won’t realize how bad it is until there is no food to buy at the grocery store.
heh heh.
I would add to that picture Paulson offering to bailout the bank that owned the tumbril but refusing to bribe the executioner because he belonged to the real economy. While in the crowd, I can see people selling naked CDSs on Paulson’s near term career prospects.
Focused violence works better
ROFL. that’s dark, man.
Before it gets worse? It’s worse.
An acquaintance who’s job is to register auto title transfers for dealerships at the DMV.
At the downtown DMV mid morning there are usually 20 to 40 people in line and six to nine workers. Yesterday there was one of each.
This is in oil boom town Houston. What’s it like in your neighborhood?
It’s time for demand-side economics. I sick and tired of being trickled down on.
This is the scenario anticipated by Bush and why he has stationed troops in the US – trained in crowd control and suppression.
Beans , bullets and bandaids.
Seriously, I have been trying to get peoples attention for months, start stocking up on food.
At least enough to feed your family for three months.
I’ll even make it easy for you, here is an excellent site to help get started, it is not that difficult to do a small bit every week.

The GOP are counting on this Ian only they hope it turns into a race war against Obama, and it might in the South.
Americans should have been marching and protesting in the streets for the last few years of this immoral Bush administration, but most of us are too sunk in our own personal day-to-day survival, and dulled by decades of trashy television and the “infotainment” we get from our sorry cable news these days…
I would like to think that the American spirit of confidence, ingenuity, and creativity will overcome these dire straits we find ourselves in these days, but with the Republican leadership vowing to do anything they can to obstruct and destroy the Obama administration before it even gets off the ground, I really think we are screwed this time.
Oh, and of course after O gets in and the economy collapses, these same Repub leaders and all of the right wing media in this country (Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly etc.) will blame the whole mess on the Democrats and the Obama administration…and the Corporate media will follow dutifully along….SIGH!!!!
I’m starting to think that we’d be in a far different situation if every purchaser of a “Naked CDS” had to register their position, and this registration was a public record.
Will it ever be possible to discover who is about to profit from the coming catastrophe?
Ian?
Either we pull an FDR or we get Chaos seems to be our choices the GOP actually seems to prefer chaos to losing control. They think that they will lead the mob in their suits against other people who have less than they do.
Sarah Palin, Bush etc all seem to think that they are common folks when they wear cloths that cost more than my last used car.
I think the GOP is misjudging the mob. They think they can predict and control it.
This level of stupidity would be funny if it wasn’t sad.
Americans have a lot tied up in the political process having been through a bloody civil war when that process broke down completely. Although healthy street demonstrations and civil disobedience might not be a bad thing, rioting in the streets for no reason than to let off steam or to have anarchic “fun” are counterproductive.
Rioting for work or food, fun? Judging from the newly placed troops to be used on American soil, the government isn’t expecting anyone to riot for fun. This is some serious business.
it looks like it is originally from the ‘press that cannot be named or they will charge you for using it’
here’s a google page, pick one.
lol.

This is a great article on what some Obama transition members are facing in working with Bush Administration officials. It’s on NASA and is just amazing.
There already is violence, we exported lots of it.
As for the violence here its going to be big beat downs on people.
The way the media reports things I think the dollar will have to approach or reach zero before enough people do something.
As for loans here is the deal (lowered it):
- credit card interest locked at 8% max
- car loans locked at 6% max
- mortage locked at 3% max
That’s it, get off everyones back criminals.
No, the real crisis will come when their teevee breaks down and they can’t afford to buy a new one. Given how well they are built, that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. As to food, ‘who needs that stinkin’ stuff’?
Ayn Rand and her4 “Captains of Industry” are quaking in their boots right about now!
It is Time the 95%er’s realize that the economic GAME is FIXED by the Bankers and you know who is going to win if something isn’t done to change the Rules of the game.
We need to go back to the Tax structure of 1946 when the top 5% paid 95% taxes. It is the only way to fix the game and level the p-laying field. Universal Health care has to be part of the fix as it is one of the leading cause of bankruptcy. Right after loss of employment. These rich bastards just don’t get it you can’t just keep the masses down anymore in these times of instant communications and the Internet to spread the news. The Chinese know that that is why they are censoring the Internet as best they can(the worst of it is our companies are helping them).
Thanks for reposting, Busted! I hadn’t seen this before and I’ve already printed out three of the handouts. It’s a very good informative site. I’ve been trying to cut our grocery bill for months now w/o giving up too much protein.
There doesn’t need to be any riots. the economy alone is reason enough to stock up. thanks again.
Yeah, how much longer are we going to have a free internet? Being used to incite and coordinate riots, y’know.
I’m confused. what precisely are they rioting over in Greece?
They’re striking in China too:
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/BU…..or.unrest/
And Italy:
http://www.google.com/hostedne…..wD9519PGO0
And Argentina:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/…..in_america
Strikes everywhere.
Everybody knows [Google video link]
when they hold gonzogate thing was going on, I still think we needed to have a general strike ’till he (and shrub) quit. I’m not sure Americans appreciate the value of a general strike as a form of pushing a sense of urgency in securing political change. I do not, however, think there is any justification for a riot, ever.
Not only will the right wing media, corporations and corrupt politicians be targets but the corrupt and complicit corporate media. The celebrity “journalists”, newsreaders, bloviators and inside the Beltway pundits will be forced to wear disguises. They will not be exempt from the people’s rage.
Hard to do when you’re being uniquely American holding down 3 or more jobs…..
That’s the ruling class wet dream imho.
I really don’t think the situation in Greece is comparable. The rioting over there is going on because of a long-radicalized student movement that has an extremely contentious and equally long history with the Greek police force. There may be economic factors as well, but most of the unrest is fomented on factors that have no real correlation in US society.
Both the French Revolution and Russian Revolutions were organized and coordinated prior to the age of the internet.
will be the very first lived blogged revolution.
i think there would BE riots here and now were it not for some general consensus to give Obama a chance………….
don’t underestimate Americans and their taste for open righteous indignant rebellion, dudes and dudettes. We are, as a citizenry, generally armed and exceedingly dangerous.
It’s built into our DNA.
We CAME from there!
It’s hard wired into us.
I give it more than 6 months…depending on how the Big (little) 3 shake out.
Beyond that, I HOPE it comes to outright class warfare. It appears to be the only way to reverse the criminal attack on the not-rich started by St Reagan and continued, to greater or lessor degrees, by every President/Congress since (including Democrapic ones). Neoliberalism IS Reaganism IS neoconservatism with slightly different emphases.
Executive pay MUST be reduced while increasing worker pay. Period. The disparity MUST be corrected.
Healthcare MUST be available to all regardless of employment status or economic status. Period.
College MUST be available to more people who aren’t rich – without it, there is no way for them to gain any traction. Locking people out of college due to costs is a means of permanently and drastically bifurcating the country into feudal lords and peons.
and fact check.
Relatives in France were denied by their bank to withdraw funds from their own accounts. A lot of simmering anger brewing there. Stay tuned.
Exactly. The healthy educated ones vs. the rest of us. Which would make us even more disposable than we are considered to be now.
I’ve said it a million times, though maybe not here, but that I thought that the Bushies were and are trying to kill us. More for them, ultimately.
Perfectly stated Praedor.
Bravo!
20,000 troops is not enough to do anything but control a mid-to-large city. Spread out over many cities…spiting in the wind.
Plus, no matter how you slice it, the VAST bulk are locked up and will continue to be locked up in losing Afghanistan.
Think of it, over 150,000 troops can’t control Iraq, cannot even control one major city in Iraq (name one, but Baghdad is a good example). If violence broke out here and was relatively widespread, if sporadic, a mere 20,000 wouldn’t control much of anything and then, only until they were shot off to some other problem location.
my guess is that it’ll become a lot less free the moment we actually start organizing on it… if we don’t actually use it to organize labor actions and other forms of peaceful resistence, then there’s hardly a point to control it, is there?
A class war? Something that I have been expecting for years. The way the repigs in the senate are acting, they just might find themselves on the list of the upper class/ wealthy toadies. prediction. The US as a republic will not stand for more than 50 more years. The total corruption of not only the politicians but of the political process will see to that. I foresee, a theocratic dictatorship, a US falling down to 3rd world levels due to religiously approved education. Our society falling apart due to a lack of people trained to fix things. An authoritarian society separated into classes, with the uber rich oligarchs running the totally corrupt govt in and for themselves. A first class war machine sent to war around the world to assist the multinational corporations keep market share. The masses of sheeple placated with “bread and circuses”-Beer and sports, with the sports becoming much more violent. A religious police state run by evangelicals. It little matters who will be president because it is the congress who has the power and with the repigs already showing how they plan to act along with a dem leader-Reid-unable to enforce the rules of the senate(is there a “gentlemans agreement” on the subject of “filibuster”? Does one only have to threaten to win? Why is no one called on to back up his threat?) I do not believe that if Reid had forced the repigs to actually carry out their threat of filibuster that it would have lasted more than a few days. By caving in without making them carry out their threat, Reid is setting the tone for the next congress.
Has it been suggested that some of the mfg. we sent overseas be brought back here? When I see small appliances, little things in hardware stores, clothing and fabric all made overseas, I wonder why we don’t make those things here?
I’ve stopped buying stuff I want (not necessarily need) because it’s not helping American workers. At the consumer end I know I’m not helping the economy.
If there aren’t buyers at the end of the line, it doesn’t matter how much is manufactured or where if the stuff just sits on store shelves or is stored in overstocked warehouses.
The workers, no matter where, don’t have much of a future if there are no consumers of those products. I won’t even get into the disposable $$ that could buy those products!!
The Republican wet dream is a world populated with billionaires and serfs.
They might be able to but out one fire here but another would break out over there. Not only that there is no guarantee soldiers would fire on fellow Americans. Oh sure some would without hesitation but can’t say they all would. The Russian Revolution was facillitated when Russian troops returning from the Front began shooting their officers and joining the people on the streets.
If there were riots here, they would start small. 20,000 Troops could violently crush a small riot and decimate the rioters to serve as an example. That’s the standard MO for tyrants and dictators, no? It would stave off further riots at least temporarily.
There is that deal too that allows the guvmint to take (steal) the National Guard from one state and use them (against people) in another state – and the ability to bring in Canadian troops (and for Canadians to bring in US troops) if needed.
One can get around the reticence for SOME troops to fire on their own peeps by throwing them against “the other” in one way or another.
In any case, I think this is putting the cart WAY before the horse. Things are not (yet) as bad as they were during the Big Depression – and even that didn’t lead to riots on the scale seen in Greece. The rest of Europe have only seen sporadic, limited rioting.
I’ll be interested to see if it spreads. My heart is with those against globalization and the attendant theft of wealth from the not-rich for the rich, wherever they reside. Globalization, as it is presently run, allows for the rich to steal from the poor and stay in their obscene mansions and vacation homes in posh locales anywhere in the world. They THINK they are beyond touch.
They must be touched to teach them the error of their ways.
see, and i just don’t agree. in the current climate? any troops kill Americans on American soil, i think this government would get a sound fast reminder of just who the American people are.
i think that would ignite everything everywhere. Instantly. People underestimate the freedom instinct in the American populace.
Respectfully, yellowsnapdragon.
Greek-inspired demonstrations spread
It’s AP, so you can take the political slant with a grain of salt. It does appear that the protests have been quite small (at least so far). Interestingly,
I hope you are right about that. But it is awfully suspicious that troops have been moved around to operate on American soil. It’s the current government I don’t trust, not the people.
You mean like the killing of four students in Ohio did back on May 4, 1970?
i think the response to troop aggression here and now would be far stronger than it was at Kent State. i have heard people talking about a new revolution for quite some time now. since the 2006 elections, though successful, created no change. And Bu$hCo has been an atrocity upon the world and everyone knows it.
it’s just my opinion. i think a lot of Americans are back against the wall pushed to the brink right now. just waiting to see what Obama does, and further, I think he knows that.
“Here’s the question. When will Americans decide they’ve had enough and start rioting? I believe that Obama’s got about 6 to 8 months. At that point, if things aren’t getting better, I think there’ll be violence. The bailout was the key moment with respect to this. Giving away that much money, and getting nothing for it, is going to be the rallying cry for the disaffected.”
You sound as if you WANT americans to start rioting: is that true?
honestly, i don’t think it’s going to happen (maybe in a few areas, but not widespread), but if it does, it’s not something to hope for.
and i think the majority of Americans agree with that, it’s the government, not the people. i also think the world knows it. all my clients who are overseas know it. they believe the elections of 00 and 04 were at least manipulated at some level if not just outright stolen. no one i talk to blames Americans. it’s the Bu$hies. the gov. crooked systems here.
up to us to fix it tho.
“And does the Republic Door and Window sit in count, kind of? I think it does.
Don’t forget: A CEO in India was beaten to death by an angry mob within the past few weeks. Add that to the list of recent unrest.
Can it happen here? Given how Americans are relentlessly propagandized to worship wealth right from birth, the Overclass must be counting on the usual knee-jerk deference towards the Rich as times get increasingly tough…but that’s quite a gamble, IMO. If you push people far enough, they’ll finally start pushing back. We could be due for some long delayed payback if the things that have been happening lately continue on in this vein. I have little confidence in Obama myself, but if the Rethugs are expecting to slither off the hook while leaving the Dems holding all the blame, I think they’re kidding themselves.
Tell that to the French
“let them eat cake”?
Revolution happen when the middle class have nothing to loose.
aka: Lost Their Jobs. That’s close.
Revolutions can be quiet, or violent. Violent ones tend to become civil wars. I don’t want to be in the middle of a civil war, ever again. Nor do I want to be violent, nor own a gun.
“Not only will the right wing media, corporations and corrupt politicians be targets but the corrupt and complicit corporate media. The celebrity “journalists”, newsreaders, bloviators and inside the Beltway pundits will be forced to wear disguises. They will not be exempt from the people’s rage.”
I couldn’t agree more. Whenever I watch people like Cokie Roberts in action, I’m usually a little non-plussed by the sort of rhetorical slieght of hand they always go through whenever they’re yapping about what they call “the liberal media”. They always seem to intuitively subtract themselves from the equation at these moments, as if they’re not members in good standing of the media themselves, as if they’re talking about some completely unrelated entity that has nothing to do with them. And it seems to me that they think this cheap and obvious little attempt at buck passing is actually swallowed wholesale by the rubes they’re aiming their propaganda at. But is it?
If the general public is being taught by the television gasbags to hate “liberals”, I doubt it’s as understood as they seem to think that they are themselves not among this despised subhuman group known as the wicked, evil “liberals”. After all, “liberals” are rich elitists, right? “Liberals” control the media, right? And who’s on tv all the time, who’s rich and elitist? Couldn’t be, oh, Sam Donaldson, George Will, Cokie Roberts, etc. etc.?
If it ever really does come to open violence, I strongly suspect that Sam, Cokie and the gang are in for a very, very unpleasant surprise.
They may be out of jobs before the surprise. If the money dries up the MSM will fire the old expensive hacks and get younger cheaper hacks.
i wonder if the mainstream media stations are militarized. i wonder that because i’ve seen uniformed (Army or Marine) people walk past the camera in the background before. carrying and shuffling through papers. i saw it. and it was a soldier, in camo, not an upper rank uniform.
i wonder what’s up with that.
Hunger and cold are far better teachers than reading history,
or the words of pundits.
Unfortunately, many Americans NEED to experience hunger,
cold and despair in order to honestly understand how arenation got here.
Myths and knee-jerk optimism die hard, but hunger, cold and despair will bring wisdom to many of those in denial.
Sad, but true.
sit-ins at the airports terminals and blocking runways seem to be one of the newer more effective tactics.
check google.
Part of the problem with protesting in the US is that it’s spread out and makes coordination difficult. Unless something like flights are disrupted, affecting a lot of people. it won’t receive media attention.
The NASA situation sounds ludicrous. Are there others as publicly messy?
Then I suppose we ought to multiply that total. Whoosh! the downer that can paint of human character, or the lack there-of, under stress.
I hate it when people blame all the atrocious behavior of some on stress. It gives stress a bad name. Some folks actually rise to the occasion and become more committed to doing good deeds.
Yeah, I know. Then there’s Blogo, junior, & everyone in that crowd…
but…

Getting rid of the Federal Reserve is the only cure. They are the bankers. A private group that has been stealing from Americans since Dec/1913. President Woodrow signed away America. Three years later, he spoke these words of regret:
“I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world, no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men”.
The Chairman of the Federal Reserve is appointed by the president. Reagan-Bush-Clinton-Bush..all appointed Greenspan. The government has no control over the Federal Reserve. The Fed controls America and is the root of most financial problems.
