Agreed, energy efficiency will be key, but it will pay for itself in both the quantity purchases I will be able to make and the quality of the foods in my kitchen year round. I like to hunt and fish… can’t do much these days due to no freezer space.
Ah yes, my deer hunter friend has quite a large standing freezer. The ones that aren’t frost free are much more energy efficient. And mine is in my basement which varies between 60 in the winter to 70 in the summer, so it is in a cool place.

The PG&E guy came today and installed the hew Digital meter.Of course now we have to make sure we use most of our power in the off time time part of the day and not during the peak time from from 10AM till 6PM. But it is best to run the big hogs after 10PM and before 8AM. Will update the diary tomorrow on the Solar Installation!

Hello to everyone else that is always here too.
Under the new billing plan the rates vary with the time of day and during peak hours we get the most payback for the extra electricity we generate during the day. With solar power the system generates most of the power from about 10AM till about 3PM. Although that changes with the time of year, the longer the day the more is generated! And of course if we use more power during peak times our costs go up. It will be a learning time for us but it should be pretty straight forward.

I do, I really do! I live in the middle of a forrest and the folks who built this place cleared just enough trees to insure no Summer shade. Will never understand it. Must say I have a huge souther facing roof, would be perfect for solar if solar ever gets within my budget.

No I didn’t and I don’t think my company offers them. I was more interested in the electric side as our natural gas bill never breaks $35.00 while our Electric bill in the winter was pushing over $800.00 in the winter… I know crazy but we heat our second floor with electric as the second floor is and add on and the old radiant system (which is failing badly, pipes leaking)couldn’t be extended up there anyway. After looking into replacing with a forced hot air system it was more cost effective to go Solar Electric.

It was piping in the slab, they used galvanized pipes in 1954 when this place was built… Some of the other Eichler owners still have theirs running while most have had to replace theirs. It is a great way to heat but if the pipes leak you have to jack hammer the floor open or raise the floor and put new piping in on the whole floor 1250 sq feet, oh and move out for months… Very expensive around $10 grand just for the piping!!

I’ve had two friends who lived in Eichlers in CA and loved them. I never heard of this problem but one moved out after a relatively brief stan and I lost contact with the other after a relatively brief acquaintance. But, both loved their Eichlers, and the appearances of the places impressed me.
But, the devil lurks in the details, and the need to jack-hammer the floors to fix the heating is flat bad engineering!

For Nahants radiant heating problem there are noe space heaters powered by heat exchange from hot water solar panels…the water is piped through a forced air excahnger..I have asked for the data from a local contractor will pass it along.
I had a small solar hot water business in the 80’s in So Cal for pools as well…50 % tax credit with low finance fees and interest. USA is ready…warm air is better than gas heated.
I am at 62 degrees…with warmer clothing…heat will not be turned on in this house.
Something like where you industrialize the production of straw bales for construction.
A standardized compression, weight and dimension for use in construction. IIRC straw bales have a R8 or better insulation. It is also great thermal mass for passive solar design.
Basically straw bale design are simple and efficient and if that basic building block was industrialized I imagine it’d blow the socks off the prefab particle board/two-by-four in regard to cost of production.

Using on-site sol makes sense. I’m not sure how you’d standardize/industrialize that resource unless it was an additive to product like spraycrete.

I forget what the R factor is, but I can tell you it’s so good it deserves a letter of its own. And as far as manufacturing straw bales… there is no problem in that department. Kansas alone could rebuild the entire country.
Baling in any size is easy.. it’s wrapping chicken wire around the structure which is no fun.
Oh and using a chain saw to cut away fancy shaped doors and windows is a breeze.

I dunno, it was just a passing thought. I really dislike the crap prefab shit the construction industry is using now. The way houses are build now they are design to suck energy off the grid.
Like Nathan was saying earlier, he turned his house into a node on the grid. To really rethink houseing as nodes on the grid rather than things which consume from the grid. A lot of very smart people have been thinking along these lines for a while now. Enough that some of these system designs could be driven into the mainstream.

Any that hadn’t receded before last night will be an ice skating rink and it’s supposed to stay below freezing today. They closed one of the bridges over the Wallkill because the “flats” were flooded. If that froze, the bridge will continue to be closed today. Adds 15 miles to the 5 mile trip into town to go around by the other bridge.

Good Morning! It’s 28 in Roswell, GA…brrr. Toby, Your post on making chili was informative and your recipe sounds good. I just found out that I am having company tomorrow night so today will be busy shopping and preparing a menu. Chili does sound like a possibility.
That must have made your roads a mess. It was a freezing rain here, but the temp was always above 32 at my house, so it didn’t stick on surfaces like roads. Some trees got ice covering, pulling them or limbs down and putting out electricty, but again, not right near me.
TobyWollin is right! Cookies, as a major food group, are appropriate at any time of the day or night. We had a bit of frost this morning, which is plenty of winter for us down here.

Chili for the crowd is a good deal – I always have cans of beans on the shelf just in case the kids bring along ‘a couple extra’ and I have to stretch the pot. Cornbread and a salad and some fruit for desert and you are all set.
It’s a beautiful sunny day and the temperature is suppose to climb to 50. As you folks know the climate has been unusual this fall.
I make chili with ground venison that I get from my hunter friend. He’s given me some other cuts so far this year, but not that. Wonder if he’s got enough to go around. It’s still the last of the season: mussle loading/2nd archery. I’ll wait & see what he brings.
Minus six in Montreal f., got a few shots of the sunrise. My hot chocolate, topped with fresh whipped cream is quite satisfying.

The water table was a bit low before our latest rain, but is right up there now. I know because I have a dirt floor in the basement and the water table comes up thru the floor in a heavy rain. Puddles are gone now, and floor is drying out.
A friend made venison chile and it is “surprisingly” good. Venison has never been one of my favorites but in chili it is tasty. Gotta go and get some chores done. I had put up a French Doors to separate my bedroom from the vanity and they still need a coat of paint.
Well, brrrrr, but you folks are used to it, I guess.

hahaha, eCAHN – the DH always says that ‘the basic four’ are: Grits, Gravy, Greens…and RC Cola(but then again, he’s from Florida and his family is originally from North Carolina).
Just a little oil to brown the meat. In past years, when he’s been more generous, I’ve used some of the ground venison to make “hamburgers” by just sauteeing it in a hot no-stick pan with no oil. Works for me!
It will take more than a few inches of rain to relieve the drought down here. I lost several old azaleas because of restrictions on when we can water outside. I used my one day a week for twenty minutes to make sure that my tomatoes were nourished.

My basic 4 varies according to time of day and other circumstances. Breakfast often includes cholesterol. At a family reunion breakfast once, the cook was enquiring as to quantities to shop the night before. I told him to just buy a 10 pound slab of cholesterol, slice it finely, sprinkle with salt and saute in butter.
After the cocktail hour, my basic 4 includes alcohol.
Used to it, as long as you dress properly. I started using Gore-Tex as soon as it was available in the early eighties. What you have to manage with this kind of cold is your perspiration, and the technical clothing that breathe makes that possible.
I try to drink little or no caffeine. Maybe if I’m at a shoot, to tough out the evening, and I know I’ll have problems falling to sleep, even six hours after the coffee.
I hope that the river will go down a bit.
I’m a skier, so I know all about managing persperation. In addition to the right clothing, I find manipulating my neck zipper is amazingly effective. So I zip it down while skiing to let the body heat escape, and once I’m cooled off on the lift, zip it back up to keep my core warm.
When I ride my bike to work in the wintertime(I’ll be going back to that after the new year), I find my issue is that I always dress for the temperature when I START, not after about five min. So I always end up getting to work completely wet and have to clean up and change before going into the office. It’s a hard thing for me to gauge – easy to over dress when it’s 15 degrees outside and the inside of my nose is freezing.

You are so right, my comfort depends on my neck being warm. I never understood those tv reporters, showing skin, during a cold spell. A scarf is to be worn around your neck, not down your lapel…

Depends on how quickly your body warms to the exercise. Mine heats up quickly, but I once hiked with a friend in October in the Adirondacks. 15 minutes out in the morning, temp being a bit below freezing, I was down to a turtle neck, but it took her about an hour before she took off her down jacket.
Regardless, the key is to layer. And when you start getting hot, stop and take off a layer. Today’s warm garments are thin enough you should be able to get stuff that will fit in a backpack when they are shed. Also, many jackets now have zipper vents in the armpits, and sometimes even fancier, so all you need to do is unzip. And remember about venting at your neck as soon as you start feeling warm.
hahaha..I had this image of myself doing a strip-tease out there at a red light…ooo dangerous image. I do dress in a lot of layers; I just never stop to take anything off! Big problem I could probably wear less on top for sure, though the best thing I ever did for myself was make a pair of tights out of polar fleece(hard surface outside) – those are very snuggly.

I never thought of exposing my neck when it is cold but the coldest I have ever been has been if my feet sweat and then get cold.
Here in CO snow today and tomorrow, high tomorrow in the teens.
