And to think all this time the fundies have been slavishly backing a guy who doesn’t even believe in the word of God.
MCFADDEN: Is it literally true, the Bible?
BUSH: You know. Probably not.
Heretic!
Let’s have a few dissenting views from a few of George W. Bush’s biggest supporters.
I read the Bible literally.
KING: You believe in the Bible literally?
OSTEEN: I do, I do.
KING: Noah had an ark and Adam and Eve?
OSTEEN: I do. I do. I believe that. I believe it all.
If an evangelical really believes that the Bible is literal–in other word in Psalm 139 God says ‘I formed you in your mother’s womb and before you were born I planned every day of your life,’ if they believe that’s literally true, then they can’t just walk away from that.
It all comes crashing down, doesn’t it? What’s next, Bush telling us evolution might be okay too?
I think the creation of the world is so mysterious it requires something as large as an almighty, and I don’t think it’s incompatible with the scientific proof that there is evolution.
And I think the people who thought Bush was "one of them" all these years have been played.

And WHEN did George have THAT epiphany?
you think?
“And I think the people who thought Bush was “one of them” all these years have been played.” - BT
I think they’ve also made out like Bandits … Private Jets an’ all …
My favorite quote from the interview transcript, straight out of my head:
MCFADDEN: So you can read the Bible…
Oh wait, possibly tied for first as well:
“I’m just a simple president.”
Bushman been fuckin with us.
GW is a Methodist- not a group who is whole hog into workin out theological details….
Next we’re gonna find out that he really doesn’t give a shit about abortions or stem cell research.
Not “us”; “them” wrt the religion thing. Not that the reich wing blog world/faux news will spread the word around…mustn’t taint the delusions of the drinkers of kool aid.
Does W ever go to church? I remember in the 1950s and 1960s the news used to show prez going to church on Sunday from time to time. Haven’t seen a clip of W doing that once. What admin did that stop? Reagan?
Probably not?
Oh, jeez.
Is there a methodist to W’s madodist?
Bush sold out the bible thumpers to protect his legacy!
OT
Watching Fannie/Freddie hearings. Regardless Raines other sins, he is still one of the sharpest knives in the drawer.
The Clintons went to church regularly, found a black congregation in deecee that they enjoyed.
Didn’t shrub go to church to fire Rove?
He’s givin it up for SMU.
rwcole @ 14
Thanks for the reminder. I now remember that.
They were Shined On like Bill Bennett walking into Vegas! Nothing is to good for an easy pigeon with fat pockets or votes. But once the Pockets are empty they have no trouble telling the truth about you.
Since one can’t get elected dogcatcher in this country without posing as some kind of religious person, we don’t really have the faintest idea what our politicians believe. Many probably could care less. Ronnie didn’t find it necessary to go ta church or nothin.
Preznit Bunnypants “faith” was so transparent that it was pathetic. The only people fooled were the ones who wanted to be fooled, the christofascists and the talibangelicals. It’s gonna be interesting to watch them explain to their “flocks” how they got fooled, again and again by a heathen liar. Heh, Indeed.
That’s it. He’s officially unborn-again. In which case, does that make him undead? Will mainline methodists take him back? Does he still have a soul? Did he ever?
rwcole @ 19
Nor do we need to know what the believe. The hypocrisy is that a critical group of voters think it’s important so pols feel obliged to pander to them.
It never comes crashing down. To the Evangelical “flock”, Faith means unquestioning belief regardless of even overwhelming evidence. A single doubt would surely cast them into damnation, and not just in the afterlife. One pull at that first thread, their entire lives could unravel. They realize that much, at least.
In the south, Baptists refer to Methodists as “loose Methodists” – maybe they will take him back.
maybe Ayatollah Dobson will oblige with a fatwa.
I’m not sure about the difference between Evangelicals and Fundamentalists- but “literalism”s seems to be mostly connected to the latter.
Oliver Stone’s “W” perhaps was successful in showing the transparency of the Bush conversion. Rover musta got the genius on in understanding the value of the X-tian vote and how to go about it. W went on to use it to his benefit. He is a failure at everything and now a failure at keeping this secret as well.
Here’s one of my burning unanswered Qs. The diff between fruit fly DNA & human DNA is about 5%. The diff bet chimps & humans is 2%, and I’m sure some nonhumans are closer. When did God put in the soul? 1.74%? Enquiring minds want to know.
Brain dead which is still undead. Cheney has no heart which also makes him undead! Notice that the war and no WMD didn’t affect his poll numbers Trying to privatize Social Security and Katrina did that.
Zombies should know better than to mess with New Orleans! Or Social Security!
I think in Bush’s case the difference is even less.
Who said we all have souls? In Bush/Cheney’s case I hold that is unproven:). Zombies can’t have souls or Empathy for other humans and without that can anyone argue that you Do have a soul?
Reagan never went, citing security concerns and the burden it would be on the local congregation. This was clearly a lie, since the Clintons went regularly, and plenty of people in that congregation were happy to say that the security was no trouble at all. Then “9/11 changed everything” meant the lie was reset, so Bush could cite it again even though any sentient creature should have known it was BS.
Interesting note — the recent New Yorker article about Crawford noted that in his “home” where he spent more than a month every year, Bush went to church three times in eight years.
Basically, Bush only ever went to church for PR purposes.
But that’s exactly why they maintain that facade. It all comes crashing down if they start “interpreting” one or two passages.
Hilarious.
Do sociopaths have souls?
But But the Clintons had lots more people hating them and they still went to Church?
TCU @ 31
You are disqualified from answering my Q because you have a brain. My Q was directed toward Born Agains.
Reshift @ 32
Thanks for having the details to make my point.
Rats I’m sure there answers will be funnier than anything I have said because they will really mean it. :)
oh I don’t know. While I don’t think the Methodists ever formally expelled him for being evil, but this, from a 2005 UMC statement, doesn’t sound good for our president: “As a nation we have crossed a line of evil that we had pledged we would never cross. Led by President Bush and descending throughout the military and intelligence agencies of our government, our national leadership is guilty of war crimes.”
Now that he’s turned on the fundies, having really really screwed in the mainliners in the past, I’m pretty sure he’s just SOL. Maybe the Roman Catholics will take him.
Hmmmm. Maybe I should become a concern troll on an evangelical website. Nope. Not enough time in the world to waste that way.
Nope, the RC’s went 54% for Obama.
Arrrgh! Don’t say that they might!
Well, with his pants on fire, the good pastors can point out that he is a Burning Bush…
I thought GWB claimed to be born again does this mean he was only a partial birth.
I don’t know. The Pope is sounding more retrograde with every passing day. Beatification in the works?
bwahahaaha!!!
OMG. First witness in second Fannie/Freddie panel is Arthur Burns scholar at AEI. Worst FRB Chair coupled with worse ”think” tank. WOW.
AEI? hehe. I used to know a rethug “Fellow” there who wrote a piece for Institute in which he suggested that illegal child trafficking would be greatly reduced by simply legalizing child selling (free markets good).
That sounds more like a Cato Institute report. But perhaps I’ve become excessively sensitive to the nuances among wingnut think tanks.
hehe. Actually, I think the guy’s at Heritage now. Cato’s a bit ghetto for him.
I’m not aware of the social status ranking of each. Is it AEI, Heritage, Cato?
A repetent “financial engineer” up at the hearings.
Not sure. For the wingnut excuse-factories AEI and Heritage are among the top of the pantheon. Cato and Discovery are, well, more Ron Paulish.
Blub @ 54
Close enough.
OOoops. Fannie Mae catches out AEI guy on “data error.”
It is not his fault – why was this guy not working in the WH
He went to church in China. He stood on the steps and gave his words of wisdom about religious freedom.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/…..topstories
Because he apologized for and corrected the error. That’s way subpar for the WH.
Forgot that one. Going to church as a campaign prop and a way to embarrass the host. Purrfect.
Moving 2 flights up with Ian.
http://firedoglake.com/2008/12…..uity-bust/
Apparently, he did.
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..at-church/
Well..judging from the pictures..he was drunk at the Olympics..so likely drunk at church, too.
The problem with Bushie is that everything is so mysterious to him that it requires some supernatural intervention. How does the rain know to fall? Why is the gravity always on? Is it cheaper that way? And so forth …
In fact the real mystery is that Bushie thinks he can think, when in fact He is a Bear of Very Little Brain.
I guess he figured KKKarl would soon be seeking salvation.
Why does it always surprise people when they feel the cold sharp edge of the Bush knife being inserted into their backs? Is our people not learnin’?
I’m pretty sure the Catholics don’t want him either, since they condemned his war in Iraq.
Perhaps not completely o/t, I believe that Rod Blagojevich is my personal smurf.
Yes, that’s what I was trying to say. (I sometimes wonder why they don’t keep Kosher)
But presumably they’re also going stick with their long held beliefs about Bush too, whatever he says now.
RWC: Thanks for pointing that out. Of course I really meant Fundamentalists. I was just careless.
http://pieterfriedrich.com/heretic.html
George W. Bush is no Christian, and I’ll tell you why.
Every year since taking office the President has hosted an Iftaar dinner which Islamic “holy leaders” have attended. The Iftaar is a banquet held at the beginning of the Muslim month of Ramadan. According to various White House press releases, in 2001 the President was honored to welcome his guests during the “holy month of Ramadan,” in 2002 he was honored that his guests attended to help “usher in the holy month of Ramadan,” and in 2003 he was pleased to host his guests during the “blessed month of Ramadan.“
BUT wait! there’s more! http://www.cuttingedge.org/News/n1795.cfmWe have always said that President Bush is an unrepentant Skull & Bones adept, and that his rhetorical claims to being Born Again just do not square with the facts. At long last, we are so pleased that another major ministry agrees with this understanding.
http://www.cuttingedge.org/News/n1464.cfm and other links show that not all fundies think GWB is A-OK
