Some more news from the kewl kids table. Apparently my wingnut colleague hasn’t shown up for lunch since the election (he comes in Tues and Thurs; I’m a mon-wed kind of guy), because he bet everyone at the table 10 bucks that McCain would win. He thought the geezer would be pushed over the top by Palin. I guess that makes him ‘impaled.’

In conversation with another member of the table who is not a wingnut, but a conservative, and according to himself a ‘lapsed social democrat,’ I was reminded for the umpteenth time just how selfish these people are. I asked him if he was going to the Dean’s Faculty Party Friday night, which is a nice meal, some carolling, and the usual prospect of drunkeness, lude advances, and brawls towards the end, and he said he couldn’t see the point. I responded that it was actually a way of cementing the community of our joint endeavour to pass some wisdom into the heads of our undergraduate and graduate students, a reminder that we are all in this together. And he fired off his standard point that community is a lot of crap, and that we should all be content just to publish and go home to our suburban homes for drinks and teevee.

These people just have had some truly traumatizing childhood experience, to hold a grudge so long.

Yeah, they’re just full of it on that point. I’m almost finished reading “Dreams of My Father”, which he wrote long before his birthplace would have mattered. There’s nothing in the chapter on his trip to Kenya that would suggest that ever happened. It would have been mentioned in the discussion of inheritances from his father’s “estate”; two or three pages were dedicated to the inheritance and I’m pretty sure their concept of his standing would have changed had he been born in Kenya,so someone would have mentioned that to him on the trip.
