Just received this statement from the Obama camp:
STATEMENT FROM SENIOR ADVISOR DAVID AXELROD
I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy. They did not then or at any time discuss the subject.
Apparently Axelrod had talked to Fox News Chicago and said:
Axelrod said, “I know he’s talked to the governor and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them.”
Interesting. Although, frankly, so what if he did? As long as there’s no quid pro quo, it’s no big deal. Of course Obama would be interested in who will replace him.
(See also Marcy’s take that "spoken directly" is the key phrase).

Wanted to put this out, but will kick LHPs post back to the top in about 10 minutes or so.
If Obama did it’ll be on tape…!
Maybe Axelrod was speaking for Obama as he did during the campaign. Sounds like a pretty safe statement, doesn’t it?
Thanks Ian

Yeah, so what? I would expect there might be at least a call out of formality…but any connection seems to be fraught with controversy.
Read on a blog today (sorry, don’t remember where) that the FBI wired Blogo’s office and recorded him speaking to aide (Harris?) saying something along the lines of: “Obama’s people want (someone) in the Senate seat, but they aren’t going to give me anything but appreciation–(Expletive) them!” This is very good evidence (IMO) of Obama being upright and in the clear.
This was covered in tonight’s ABC news also (to my surprise.)
i expect we’ll be hearing alot of screaching about this from the malkin-esqe/FOX crowd. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
So what, Ian, is that the FOX affiliate in NY is already using a teaser line “How did President-elect Obama”s name xome up in this? Stay tuned.”
I swear to God, I want the Fairness Doctrine back, I want a vigorous examination of the consolidation of media ownership in major markets, and i want an end to this fucking propaganda machine that the right has created before we have to listen to another four years of innuendo about this president like we went through with Bubba.
I was in a doctor’s waiting room this morning and I actually heard the CNN reporter say she was going to miss Bush because of his quirkiness, his goofy smiles, his little dances. This is a major fucking war criminal and she’s gonna miss him.
How long before this whole economic morass is Obama’s fault?
6 months, to a year at the outside
