Back in November, Olympia Snowe’s office, in response to rumors that President-Elect Barack Obama was seeking to appoint her as Commerce Secretary, stated that "Senator Snowe is happy where she is, serving the people of Maine." And, interestingly enough, depriving Obama of the chance to get the Democrats one Senator closer to the magic number 60, as Snowe’s successor would be appointed by Maine’s Democratic governor.
However, she must have changed her mind in the past few weeks — or Mitch McConnell was too much the condescending old-school conservative to give any rewards to a female moderate Republican, no matter how loyal she was to the party — because guess what? Scuttlebutt is now strong that Snowe, who has called on Obama to restore the Small Business Administration to the Cabinet-level status it held under Clinton, is going to be Obama’s pick to head a newly-re-Cabinetized SBA.
If Snowe goes to SBA and frees up her Senate seat to be taken by a Democrat, the Republican hopes of a filibuster firewall will then hinge on Norm Coleman’s surviving the recount in Minnesota.
Heh heh heh. If he pulls this off, I call dibs on calling it Obama-jitsu!

Heh. Can she do any harm heading SBA? Can she do any good?
More an Obama-do, methinks.
Heh, ain’t politics fun?
Sorry to go OT on you so soon, PW, but paging a mod. My diary seems to have disappeared from Oxdown. Yesterday I noticed that the correct date of December 5 had been changed to the incorrect date of November 30, and today it seems to be missing altogether. Also, when you search Oxdown for eCAHNomics, only 2 diaries where I’ve commented come us, whereas I think I’ve commented on 4 or 5.
I love it when a plan comes together

Cute. But did you know about that old trick with fortune cookie fortunes? They are always better when you add the words “in bed.”
your oxdown diaries
your oxdown comments
I see your 12/5 diary at the very bottom of the list of “Recent diaries” at Oxdown and it shows a date of 12/5 at 6PM when opened.
Didn’t notice that list before. Thanks.
How did you find the diary? It didn’t show up on when I did a search.
You link to my comments comes back to this post.
Hussein-fu !
Digg it
google?
trying again: link to your oxdown comments
Hmm. I’d love to know the Republican politics behind this, looks and feels like payback from Snowe for old sleights.
Unless this is a snow job.
Good old google.
I feel like I’m hallucinating when things don’t work the way they should. I used the search site function in Oxdown.
Olympia Snowe:
Committee assignments
Committee on Finance
Subcommittee on Health Care
Subcommittee on International Trade and Global Competitiveness
Subcommittee on Taxation, IRS Oversight, and Long-term Growth
Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (Ranking Member)
Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation
Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security
Subcommittee on Interstate Commerce, Trade, and Tourism
Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard (Ranking Member)
Select Committee on Intelligence
This is delicious, PW. The Reich wing of the GOoP just doesn’t get it. They’ve moved so far that they’ve left a lot of folks behind. Looks now like Olympia finally figured out that even if she thinks she’s a Republican, McConnell and Co don’t.
Good on her.
Any word on what’s going on with Franken and Normie?
((Selise))
thanks for the Kevin Phillips link downstairs – was po’d at myself for forgetting the tivo – I just love his work and he’s an entertaining guest as well
my math is a bit fuzzy here. Is that 60 with or without that vanity party senator from Connecticut?
probably the standard wordpress search function. needs work, maybe in the next version.
the 60 includes VPS/CT and Senator Sanders of Vermont
Snowe’s replacement + Franken gives us 60
i plan on listening (and recording the audio) also!
Many rethugs consider her to be a RINO.

Thanks. Is 59+caucus spy really 60? ;-P
Last I heard it was through except for the contested ballots and finding the missing 133
Yup.
Everything OK now, e? Sorry I wasn’t around to help — glad selise could. :-)
What, did she get recommended by Joe Lieberman? But I thought Susan Collins was his comrade in arms?

Deliciously devious. *G*
mike & BC -
Seems I read somewhere this p.m. they’re calling off the search for the 133……maybe at Josh’s???
“…payback from Snowe for old sleights.”
Ha! If this is a Freudian slip, it could be an interesting one.
Perhaps you meant “slights”?
Bob in HI
only my first oxdown diary shows up in the oxdown search engine. i sent a query to the oxdown e-mail last week but haven’t gotten a response. for now, google brings it up.
60 with, unfortunately.
this is awesome news. As one who campaigned for Allen in Maine to unseat Collins, we’ve all been wondering how the hell we’re ever gonna get rid of these two repub ladies from Maine. If Gov Baldacci (Dem) picks her replacement, I wonder if it’ll be Allen.
and Any word on what’s going on with Franken and Normie? see Huff post.
Bob, don’t you mean “Ho ho ho!”
And what administration job migh Susan Collins like, hmmm?
yes, collins. now THAT would be sweet.
Snow(e) an sleigh(t)s…could be Freudian or Spooneristic.
But I’m wondering precisely what the advantage to Snowe this offers. Would she actually gain anything from taking on the offer. Clearly she’s interested in the SBA…but she has involvement at that within the Senate as the ranking member of the Republicans. She’d still have a lot of influence in that area if she stayed…perhaps more than if she was in the Cabinet. By leaving the Republicans would likely put in a butt-head obstructionist.
Here’s what I would consider “rich”. Snowe stays in the Senate…waits until after the Session is sworn in and announces that she has decided that she’s no longer able to work within the Republican Caucus. She could become either a Democrat or an Independent caucusing with the Democrats (while still retaining her positions ~a la Joe Lie).
Thus in order for the Republicans to remove Snowe from her Co-Chair positions they’d have to strip Joe-Lie of his positions on the same grounds. IMO Snowe could even clearly jump parties and retain her co-Chair positions under the rules. In fact, she might even be able to select some other perk posts, given her seniority position.
But maybe there is something else being offered that trumps this possibility.
I watched the Katrina investigation hearings when Collins was still in charge of that committee. I thought she did a really good job holding all those people’s feet to the fire. Unlike LIEberman who didn’t even bother holding a hearing.
Maybe Ms. Collins could be induced to be the overseer of infrastructure with a special portfolio just for NOLA. It’s going to take someone to coordinate all these projects and keep them from becoming just business as usual especially in states like ALASKA…
The Democrats will hold at least 56 seats in the next United States Senate, with the two independents (Sanders and Lieberman) continuing to caucus with the Democrats for a total of 58, with one seat still undecided (Franken vs. Coleman). If Franken wins the MN seat the Democrats+Independents would be 59. Republicans have 41.
If Snowe resigns or changes party affiliation to Caucus with the Democrats that would give them 60. Of course, Joe Lie is still problematical. But I suspect that on many issues there are Republicans who are, like Snowe, simply tired of the lock-step demands of the obstructionist Republican leadership. And in states like Maine it’s hard to defend oneself as bipartisan and someone willing to “act” to resolve issues if one is constantly doing “nothing”.
There is a big difference between having ‘influence’ as a member of the minority party, and actually being the policy setter at the top of the agency in charge.
Of course, we have the problem of Dems like Feinstein who have seemingly forgotten their ‘roots’ and have helped the Repukes obstruct things as well.
On the Committee she’d be the decisive vote if she was willing to abandon the filibuster. And that’s the significant vote that would have to be convinced. And that vote would also be generally the decisive one in the general vote if she broke from the Republican caucus. If she jumped ship and became an independent or Democrat after the passage ofd the authorizing resolution I suspect that she would keep he Committee seats, as well as her Co-Chairmanship (a la Lieberman). That would mean that the Republicans would lack a Chairmanship control in the SBA Sub-Committee or on the Coastal Waters/Coast Guard Sub-Committee.
If she resigns a bona fide (intransigent) Republican would get those posts, and whomever the governor of Maine appoints comes in with the lowest seniority of any Senator.
And people thought the speculation regarding Hillary was fascinating! Maybe Obama will look into restoring some military to Maine that Bush has planned to transfer to Florida. Everything has been political with the Bushies and that probably ticked off all of Maine. Or, who knows, maybe Ms. Snowe is just done with the Senate and would like an Executive branch job to put some results on the map.
It’s certainly an interesting situation.
