Convoy attacks trigger race to open new Afghan supply lines

Nato countries are scrambling for alternative routes as far afield as Belarus and Ukraine to supply their forces in Afghanistan, which are increasingly vulnerable to a resurgent Taliban, the Guardian has learned.

Four serious attacks on US and Nato supplies in Pakistan during the past month, including two in the past three days, have added to the sense of urgency to conclude pacts with former Soviet republics bordering Afghanistan to the north.

Nato is negotiating with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to allow supplies for Nato forces, including fuel, to cross borders into Afghanistan from the north. The deal, which officials said was close to being agreed, follows an agreement with Moscow this year allowing Nato supplies to be transported by rail or road through Russia.

Funny thing is that the Russians utilized the same routes when they invaded… Why would they think the Afghans have forgotten those routes…? :headdesk:

Being in Washington, D.C. this weekend was pretty wonderful. We did all the geeky librarian things to do, and then walked in the snow Saturday night. The new Capitol Visitor Center is awesome.

It’s a good book, and would be even if it wasn’t the last thing Molly worked on. It’s important too — there’s enough distance that some of the stupider efforts in support of Bushie are funny-ish now. That makes the lesson go down easier for some people. I can get my brother to read this — I couldn’t get him to read Olshansky and Lindorff if it was the only book within 100 miles of him.

When an earthquake struck in 1907, he ran his bank from a plank in the street. Word quickly spread about his service and by 1916 he had several branches. Ya know I did hear that story years ago. I bet old Mr Giannini is rolling over in his grave to see HIS Bank act so Ruthless towards the people who helped build B of A into what it is today. Of course the original B of A was bought out Nations Bank who kept the name! But here is the Wikipedia page.

Bet it is exciting! Tried to read a purportedly autobiographical novel by a former OSS agent touching on that. Chasing down confiscated impressionists shipped via Holland to Madrid, en route to South America.

Written about 10 yrs ago by a then-elderly US woman who’d married a spanish count. Writing is challenging and some photos dubious to my untutored eye. But the topic is fascinating.
