Broken Shovel ya think?
Glad your safe and sound. How did Token fare?

My middle ‘un is all gussied up and attending the Winter Ball… Waah… Where did my little girl go?
Btw, I’ll be up late awaiting her arrival home…!
the bride hated it when i chatted with her dates ahead of time. she called it interrogating em. i remember i did do a safety inspection of ben-the-butthead’s car before they went out one nite.
excuse my tardiness. I was temporarily called away by other duties just as I was in the process of opening the Digg.
I see nahant did a fine job in my absence, and anyway, it gave those two z*dheads something to chatter mindlessly about.
hello everyone.
eCAHN, are you here?
Smart move! A friend just called and said their nephew was picked up at a DWI check point that HPD set up outside the venue… Fortunately, neither my daughter nor her beau are driving…!

Underage, all they have to do is whiff any alcohol and you’re headed to the station…!
i was watching the triangle monday on the drive down. still can see venus and jupitor but the moon has moved on. twas forking special and that photo is eye candy of the finest kind.
Read it.
My favorite Clemens is from CT Yankee in KA Court. Something about how economic activity came out of the brain. Used it in my handout for presentations. (Too lazy to look for the exact quote tonight). A century in advance of the economics profession.
and he knows that. at least he did not get booked into the jail on a dui while his parental unit was working patrol.
what was the fri nite news dump that i missed last nite? i heard about the oj sentence but that was scheduled. what did boosh try to flush down the terlet?
Go here, search on “paper” and it’s the second quote that comes up.

Something you experienced first hand…? ;-)
I am so hooked on the blog…my reading is suffering. I just spent 15 minutes of what precious life I have remaining reading about mormon underwear on FDL. The Lake is getting a bit wierd. I did not need to know my next door neighbors are wearing this shit. Bad enough as it was. Oh well if that is the worst then OK.
Some damn good posts of late Greenpeace and then Ian’s comments.
Hi Suzanne welcome back to the Oregon North Coast. Put plastic on the outside of your windows as double pane to save heat and keep ot the humidity…yeah I know butt out buddy!
I have two favorite Clemens passages. One is the Letter to the Earth, the other is the essay on extrapolation (using the Mississippi as the data basis). I assign that excerpt on those occasions when I get to teach time series analysis or regression analysis.
i was commenting earlier on Greenpeace and it was going to the VA blog?
*laughing* my landlord did that on the bay side windows of the art studio. i’m thinking of having it done here but… i forking love looking at the bay through the living room windows. my vision is blurry enough without looking at it through plastic.
am chewing on it tho
kirks post poofed for a bit but we were able to use the magic power of backstage to figure out what happened and republish it.
forkin gremlins (laughing)
Ah, regression analysis. I’ve run so many regressions, I ran out of personal degrees of freedom about 3 decades ago. Luckily I’d learned all that regression could tell me about economics so switched to other tools.
Suzanne,
Friday news: Jefferson lost.
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..jefferson/
This count? Bush: war in Iraq on its way to being won
Or more like This…
that’s good news but it was not buried in the traditional boosh friday nite news dump
Had me doing the tar baby…Uncle Remus if you don’t say good morning Brer Tar Baby Iahm gonna knock you right in that briar patch… thing with my more powerfl expletives. Kept saying you are no allowed to post on this data sheet or something like that another first. I embarrassed my self, hope it did not come through.
I didn’t realize that we had personal limits on degrees of freedom… I’m sure I must have run out ages ago. Unless I’m using up my collaborator’s degrees of freedom.
Who do I check with to get my personal nu balance?
fork – that second one is a forking classic dump.
spitting – forkers
Actually I think the vote was today.
We had cloud cover here, so I didn’t see the special effects, but I thought that sunset kind of looked like the ones you photograph.
twas a good try tho and i appreciate the news that mr keep cash in the freezer is gonna be unemployed.
As I am an autodidact, it occurred to me a long time ago that regressions had exceeded their educational extreme.
Referring to the prior thread, think you must confer with your religious leader to see your personal analytical account balance.
There are some Ds who are better not in office.
but ya got snow :) i’ve not had snow where i live that lasts. the most i ever got in the bay area melted as soon as it hit the ground. zip up at the cottage – it snowed there the winter before i moved in but not a flake while i was there.
yeap, i love the more and better d’s phrase that howie and blue america use.
Oh, Great Flying Spaghetti Monster….
Speaking of Howie and today’s Lousy-anna election results…

yeap. we gotta find good progressive d’s to run in these kinda racces.
Good nite everyone.
g’nite ecahn
Aloha, eCAHN!
Good night eCAHN, and all you other pups…

Very, very frightening. Thunderbolts and lightning.
-G
Meanwhile in Afghanistan. 62 NATO supply trucks go up in smoke.

i gotta admit, the cold felt good. i think i’m acclimating to the mitigated temps up here. i sure was achy thur nite in boulder creek – twas a cold damp up on the mt.
open your eyes
look up to the skies
and see…
I like a nice cold day. It does make one senses more crisp.
Just as long as there is no wind, I don’t mind it really cold at all.
-G
That’ll put a crimp in the resupply efforts…! That’s our main sea borne resupply depot!
Hi Suze ! Thought I’d stop in and say hi
Snowing here in Mass 2 inches no big deal !
They should have one of those royal jerkoffs or loya jirgas and just try to make peace with the different factions.
It’s a disaster.
-G
Just got out of Gloucester/Magnolia a few hours ago. No snow then….
-G
as long as i am toasty inside with a nice fire going (and a good stack of wood inside) i’m a happy camper. let it rain, snow, or blow as long as i’m not out there pretending to be a traffic signal during a power failure in the storm :)
december is the only month when i want it to snow. i think its because i’ve woke up to a white christmas and i have this romantic notion of how it would be. i’m sure the reality of it would have me cursing.
Amen.
Night Suz, CTut and Billy…
-G
I couldn’t agree more! We need to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan…! Stop the indiscriminate killings and provide rebuilding assets instead of weapons and armaments…!
Aloha, GSD!
g’nite gregb
I don’t want it to snow any month I’ve had my share!
i’m sure that i would probably be like that email that goes around about the city folks who move to the country for the snow – and end up h*ting the forking snow (and snow plow driver)
Nite GregB
I gotta call it a night too !
I can’t even type it’s late se ya all later
Aloha, BB!
g’nite bbugs
ct, you getting used to the cold up on the mt?
Top 10 Dem villains And bonus Franken moves ahead in MN.
NO! But, I make do…! I don’t mind if it snows while I’m up top, that means they can’t open the dome and I get to stay indoors…! ;-)
yay – hope we have another pw post on this tomorrow – i really like how she explains the fuckery in mn
Diplomacy?
What a novel idea.
Dast we try it?
Swell thought…but but our arms industry will suffer…
I would definitely endorse DWSGA nos. 1 and 10…and probably some of the others, as well
Huh…? It’s official: Men really are the weaker sex
Our UN Mandate in Afghanistan applies only to al Quaeda. People have been all over the place there in the last few weeks and there are no al Quaeda operatives anywhere in the country. The Taliban fighters don’t like them, the other people don’t either. The Karzai government is so corrupt it stinks to high heaven. And since al Quaeda isn’t there anymore – we should not be either.
Turkey is trying to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan to help Obama get some of the cross-border stuff settled, but our presence there is doing more harm than good. On both sides of the border. Hope Obama figures this out and gets us out of there as well. We should continue to assist the country to rebuild – but only as we are asked. No troops necessary.
duh
CT did you ever read all that hokey biblical stuff about turning your plowshares into guns…the Fundies do such a nice job explaining it.
I think they have converted to…well an eye for an eye…maybe BO plenty will accomodate them…he has cut his 5 million campaign job by 50%. It is so much easier to compromise than use backbone.
By thw way when you give in on everything before you take the seat at the pesidents desk…what’s left but backbone?
Such a pessimist to be craky because darn near every promise is now broken.
He is going to fit in so well.
Here is a piece of news…SCOTUS let stand a 9th Circuit ruling that says state and local law enforcement do not have to enforce federal laws.
What this means is that California’s medical marijuana laws actually trump the federal one in most ways. If the feds want to arrest someone – they will have to provide the money, manpower, investigative capacity, and all that. They cannot force the local cops to do this.
Since medical marijuana is legal in California, it essentially stops all the harassment of people. Not just in California but everywhere a medical marijuana law has been passed.
Hooray!
gotta link?
Oh no he said emphatically he will move troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. Nice try Loky woky…I know as Jane says we have to give him a chance…after all we Bushco a chance and he did well…he says.
Too true! 8-(
Ninety percent of his campaign promises were made long before the financial implosion. And Bushco/Paulson have been draining the bank steadily for the last couple of months. We really don’t even know how much money they have given away to the banks at this point. The $350 billion (half of the bail-out), plus $85 billion to Fannie & Freddie, plus they printed a bunch more money – about another $700 billion and no one seems to know where that went – it was not approved by Congress, and it has fallen off the radar. Plus the government is now backing approximately another $1 trillion in bad paper.
Obama’s jobs plan was for 5 million jobs in green industries in 10 years. But now he is saying 2.5 million in infrastructure building and retro-fitting (which will include some of those green jobs). I haven’t heard him state a time-frame for the 2.5 million yet – but for crying out loud – give the guy a break. Every day that goes by Bushco and his minions are destroying more and more of the government. Barack started a list a couple of months before the election – but I am sure it is twice as long now.
He has to walk, chew gum, balance a pyramid upside down on his nose, whistle dixie, hold on to a rampaging bull with one hand, and a racehorse going the opposite direction with the other. All while standing on top of a ball of ice. Sheeesh!
The USEPA was sued by Robert Kennedy Jr. and the NRDC to rsstart that program that evaluates those chems. Three legged frogs and one eyed ones and all kinds of mutants are turning up. Salmon with curvature of the spines and tumors in the Willamette River in Central Or. And it gets worse.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha ha ha!
Right.
That is great news for Hawaii, not only because it’s part of the Ninth Circuit but because we passed a local referendum on a ‘Clear Skies Initiative’ that both the DEA and local authorities said was trumped by federal law… Hah! ;-)
i know the santa cruz cops and sheriff were not cooperating with the dea when they were raiding medicinal places in santa cruz county. glad to see the feds having to respect the wishes of we the people for a change.

i’m headed off to bed – i don’t bounce back from long drives as well as i used to. but it was totally worth it to be able to sleep at home again.
g’nite all and thanks for hanging out with me tonight.
Hiya, pups!
Back from watching Dr. Riki Ott being awarded the Alaska Muckraker of the Year award from Cook Inlet Keeper, one of Alaska’s most effective environmental watchdog groups.
I’ll be hosting her FDL Book Salon appearance on the 14th.
Riki wants to introduce an amendment to the US Constitution that revokes personhood from corporations.
I thought I could get a rise out of you.
He approved the bailout before the camp was in full swing
The recession started Nov 07
We were bailing back in August 07 the central banks have had the boilers open and have been shoveling in cash all over the globe since thento the tune of $8 trillion see Bloomberg.
Mr. Nice guy did not want to see Impeachment as it would be devisive do the treasury is open for wall street…Main street not so much.
We have been in bubbles since CLinton…the housing Bubble and the wars kept bushco going
War crimes are no big deal for Obama. Jus callin it like it is.
FISA was before all that
Without a huge green infrastructure it is all moot…see Dr. Kirk’s Greenpeace today.
So he can’t get traction for his health care, his Green Jobs because of Bushco…so what can we expect? Bread lines?
Just for the fun of it. By the way we are in the worst recession since 1945. No BS…the suffering of 5 billion people on the planet is coming our way.
Here’s the article:

Got your pod?
nope – just half of my potted plants that npb had been plantsitting for me.
*poof*
nite suz
war crimes…to the Hague…maybe BO wants handle that here at home and show the worls that we are not heels after all. Dream on BB.
What bailout? In 2007? Please refresh my bad memory…
late night can be fun after all…big G) Bobing and weaving.
Nite Suz!
Aloha, Suz!
All central banks were stoking the banking system with bailout money…
Central banks pour in billions – but global slide goes on· Panic spreads despite $323bn injection
This ought to help you out…
Parsing the legalese, it seems the big prob was over the return of the medical pot they’d seized after a routine traffic stop(running a red light)… Now, it does establish precedent about medical pot seizures and the right of return, but, how much further it can extend is anyone’s guess…
They added this same day August 11 2007…
Should I be worried?
If there is a prolonged market downturn, it could shake companies’ confidence in the world economy. This could mean spending and job cuts.
Is my pension at risk?
Pension funds hold billions of pounds of assets and a market fall will see those holdings decline in value. This could lead to more company schemes running up big deficits and ultimately being closed.
What about my mortgage?
Central bankers may cut interest rates, meaning cheaper mortgage payments. But this is unlikely to happen in Britain where inflation is a worry.
We knew in 2005…anyone with common sense knew when Bushco came into office witht he family experience in S&L scams the crime families of Bush and McCain have well documentes experiece…my friend John to quote BO Plenty
Britain’s housing crisis is in worse shape than ours, for now…!
You are up to bat Loky Woky…
Yeah! My baby is home! ;-)
Home from the Winter Ball! I shall now retire for the night! Aloha Oe!!!
Thanks for the link. I guess it wasn’t really called a ‘bailout’ at the time. And yes, the subprime mortgage meltdown was already in full swing then. I guess I am mystified at this point about what, if anything, Obama was supposed to do about it then, and what he is supposed to be doing about it right now – since he currently holds no office and has no power to actually do anything other than what he is doing which is picking his cabinet and trying to get all the Executive Orders ready to roll back Bush’s crap, and get legislation written that can be introduced and passed before he even gets into office. I don’t think that 99 percent of people understood what a mountain of worthless paper was piled on top of those mortgages in the form of derivatives and CDSs. Since they were completely unregulated, no one was keeping track, and while people understood that there was a problem with the mortgages – most people, including people on Wall Street didn’t anticipate the scale or the speed at which the entire thing came crashing down.
Bubbles of one sort or another are a part of the capitalist/greedy market system we have in this country. They go all the way back to before the first crash in 1929. It’s a feature of Adam Smith’s theory of markets. *g*
A family bought at the top here $600k might be worth $400k when we hit the floor. They have two toddlers and two adolecents all those expenses ahead of them. He is a carpenter…they are so screwed. Their health care is $12K a year and they get turned down regularly even with $500.00 deductible.
Foreclosures and lates were over 1.2 million last month. Think it will get better? Now that jobs are being cut by the rate of over 2 million a year. Realtor can’t get anyone financed there is no …no liquidity. Housing starts thew worst in decades. The construction industry and all the cottage industries are in as much trouble as Detroit…which has been in trouble for decades too.
Mr. Shot off hos mouth now he better get his shit together or he and the rest of the world are in the toilet for a long time. All them happy red necks will be comimg unglooed for openers. His teams are the same school as the neocons…yeah but he is making the decisions. I am so so encouraged. reality check. Fingers still crossed.
Kool I know thwy had a ball too glad “All’s well that ends well”. Goodnight to you… remember your home is your castle be it ever so humble.
My daughter and I have/had one of those fraudulent sub-prime mortgages. Our property appraiser gave a number and we said no to the loan – not enough cash out. Two weeks later, the property was appraised for $15,000 more. The broker also altered my daughter’s income statement and overstated her income by 2.5 times actual.
The house is in foreclosure right now. I just got a letter from Ocwen the other day offering to ‘renegotiate’ the loan. First, I have to send them a payment that is about $300 less than the old one. I have to make those payments for the next three months as a trial period.
In the meantime, all the late fees and service charges will continue to accrue.
And I also have to sign the new loan agreement. It doesn’t state the interest rate, or the term. BUT it does say that the new loan amount is $218,000. The loan balance when we quit making payments was $181,000. They have added on two sets of foreclosure costs, all the court costs for our bankruptcies, two sets of title searches and a whole raft of other crap.
If this is what they call re-negotiation, no thanks.
By the way, the house is now worth about $60,000.
Really you must have missed the arm twisting he was doing in congress to force support for this unregulated give away of the assets he needed to get the programs going to get us off of carbon and get the jobs going again.
He cut off his own nose to spite himself. So far of the $8 billion thier is little if anything to show and Lehman was let dowm. He has a lot of power because of the dem large majority…so he has big influence. He was in congres when all this wad coming dowm. How did he not know what was going on?
Although a newcomer to Washington, he recruited a team of established, high-level advisers devoted to broad themes that exceeded the usual requirements of an incoming first-term senator.[16] Obama hired Pete Rouse, a 30-year veteran of national politics and former chief of staff to Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, as his chief of staff, and economist Karen Kornbluh, former deputy chief of staff to Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin, as his policy director.[17] His key foreign policy advisers have included former Clinton administration officials Anthony Lake and Susan Rice, as well as Samantha Power, author on human rights and genocide (who resigned March 7, 2008).[18] Obama held assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations;[19] Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans’ Affairs, and he was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.[20] He is a chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs.[21] Nonpartisan analyses of bill sponsorship and voting records placed him as a “rank-and-file Democrat” and “Democratic Party loyalist.”[22] The U.S. Senate Historical Office lists him as the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history, the third to have been popularly elected, and the only African American serving in the Senate until he resigned his seat in November 2008 in preperation for his new job as the 44th President of the United States[23]
It’s not going to get better for a good long while because this bailout or whatever forking thing it is supposed to be is attacking the problem from the wrong end. The sub-prime mortgages should ALL have been re-negotiated to fixed-rate 30-year terms and all the fees and charges removed. People were able to make the payments before the interest rates adjusted, and since prime rate is below 1 percent now, there is no reason to keep these mortgages at 9 or more whatever. That should have been mandatory. If the borrowers were able to keep making payments, the CDSs would not have come into play since they only do when someone defaults. (That’s AIG’s big problem).
I do not agree with reducing the principle on loans, even if the house isn’t worth as much. You borrowed the money – you pay it back. But all the extra interest and fees – yeah.
But they should re-negotiate ALL of those loans – not just the ones in default.
When/if they did give money to the banks, it should have come with a whole bunch of strings:
1) Fire the first three levels of top management.
2) Put a cap on compensation and include stock and other ‘bennies’
3) Mandate that a big percentage of the new money has to go out the door within a short period of time in new loans.
4) Report back to Congress every thirty days and tell your progress and how many loans and to whom
5) Declare all CDSs null and void
6) Require anyone holding a derivative pool to unravel the mortgages and put them back ‘together’ and establish a single-owner. Servicing companies can do this.
Of course, none of this happened. So I really don’t know what is going to happen next. Until the problem at the bottom gets addressed – it won’t matter how much money they pour into the black hole at the top. It.Won’t.Work.
He has 5 years in the Senate.
He hired Clinton advisor Rubin of Goldman and Sachs for crying out loud the guy is almost neocon…Hi position on Isreal over Arabs was inflamatory. He is in bed with corporate america! They do not approve safety net social programs entitlements. And with no jobs we already have a big popu;ation disenfranchised like 50 million souls 10 million homeless and tent cities. Food stamps were cut under Clinton by $30 billion transferred to big AG. BO is their poster boy.
The ‘large Dem majority’ you cite does not exist yet. The current Congress has a one-vote majority in the Senate – and that one vote is Joe Lieberman. There are at least 8-10 “blue dog” dems who vote with the Republicans most of the time so even that margin doesn’t exist in actuality.
In the House, there are 38 registered Blue Dogs in that caucus – and the Dem majority in the House is right about that number. So while it may look like the Dems are in control on paper – the reality is mostly something different.
And until he was elected to become the next President – he was 99th in seniority among 100 in the Senate, a body noted for its dogmatic hanging on to the seniority system in terms of who has power and who does not. And freshmen Senators have virtually none.
Now that he is PE, he has a bit more – but the current congress is not all that controlled by the Dems and Bush is still there wielding his veto pen.
And next year when the new congress comes in, the 40 or so Republican Senators have already signed a pledge to obstruct everything Obama is going to try to do. Probably 41 now since Chambliss won. And that means the filibuster is back on the table. It truly will be a test of Obama’s vaunted ‘organizing’ to get anything at all through Congress – especially the Senate.
So, did you vote for Bob Barr? or Ralph Nader? or Ron Paul? or John McCain?
Well, I am needing toothpicks for eyelids, so will bid you a good night. It’s been fun!
Only problem with that is his main econ man Gaither does not like Mrs. Bair over at FDIC and has asked BO to remove her as she is not a team player. And she has supported helping those that are in or are approaching foreclosure.
Wall street does not want that for reason already discussed earlier today. Investor will lose as Ian posted… Let them…take the losses…”
BO sides with Bernanke Paulson and Wall street main street is out to lunch.
You can see from his Wiki profile he was familiar as Rubin of Goldman and SAchs was an insider on the “Game” and during the Clinton period he and Grassley and others teamed to make the derivitives, CDOs, Tranches and Default Swaps legal for investment bank (Sarbanes Oxley)…then they pour fuel on the fires at housing and financial cuccles with cheap money expanding the game as big hedge leveraged their bets 30 to 1. Last year BNP or another French Bank had a run and closed the doors it was well on the way and well publicised whether folks don’tknow is because thy were operating opaquely (behind doors) and SEC Chair Cox was looking the other way. The Obama tean of economists are well aware of what was happejing inside wall street.
Catch up on the reading. If you are as smart as you claim yopu would have known this bailout started last year in AUGUST 2007. You got a lot of excuses for his broken promises. He is a Liebermanite he saved his bacon by twisting arms to keep him on his committtees despite putting a shive in his back badmouthing him during the campaign and speaking at the R convention. Oy Oy evey. You really do a lot of worming around the points. The grat orator has noithing to offer? That is so lame.
Politics is done in anticipation… your arguement is sloppy that their is no Dem majority. He just gave those republicans the keys to the treasury! The senate has more dems now after the election.
My vote was against the the neocons and McInsane. I am a progessive democrat by default. I favor the politics of Kuccinich. Paul Wellstone and Russ Feingold all progressives.
BO got my vote but has a long way to go to get my approval. I wish him luck on that score. I don’t know what your trip is but I have met some of the BO Backers before he got the nod and they struck me as needing an authoritarian leader. Read Professor Robert Altemeyer’s “The Authoritarians” you fit the profile too. Hero worship falls in that category…people who need someone to tell them what to think. Your thinking lacks originality and reflects the traits of the followers of Big Brother. Enjoy your toothpicks. Amazing fast the sandman can creep up on us.
looks that way to me too. unless the bubble can be reinflated – but in that case i don’t see how we avoid something even worse down the road.
Closing out comments in the hope that the morning show is coming on.
from your link:
i don’t understand how this is done – do you?
sorry i was too late….
