Nooners attends a "sparkling" Republican Christmas party, where she undoubtedly consumed a prodigious amount of Bombay Sapphire, and files this report from the bunker:
There was no grousing about John McCain, and considerable grousing about the Bush administration, but it was almost always followed by one sentence, and this is more or less what it was: "But he kept us safe." In the seven years since 9/11, there were no further attacks on American soil. This is an argument that’s been around for a while but is newly re-emerging as the final argument for Mr. Bush: the one big thing he had to do after 9/11, the single thing he absolutely had to do, was keep it from happening again. And so far he has.
Unless you lived in New Orleans after Katrina. . . or were killed by anthrax. . . or were shipped off to Iraq or Afghanistan.
But anyway, why does Bush get a total freaking pass on the first worst attack in US history that killed 3,000 people on his watch, especially since the 9/11 Commission concluded that 6 of the 10 major missed opportunities to prevent 9/11 occurred under Mr. Kept Us Safe’s watch?
We’re just supposed to give him a mulligan on that?
There’s a rough justice with the American people. If a president presides over prosperity, whether he had anything to do with it or not, he gets the credit. If he has a recession, he gets the blame. The same with war, and terrorist attacks. We have not been attacked since 9/11. Someone—someones—did something right.
Someones?
So I guess we can conclude from Nooner’s "no 9/11-style attacks on your watch mean you’re awesome" rule here that both Clinton and Carter — and pretty much every president ever — were better presidents than the Decider.

Nooners & Co. need to asked specifically how they think shrub has managed to keep us safer than we otherwise would have been post-911. And if they say, ’cause we suspended the constitution, destroyed the legacy of American democracy and tortured people’….
Oh, fer gawd’s sake. Do we still have to listen to these morans?
The inevitable next attack will be worse when it happens because Bush was too preoccupied fomenting misery and despair in Iraq to strengthen our defenses here at home.
More likely its because of the Bush and Bin Laden connections that go back decades. It’s certainly not because the Bush administration is efficient.
OBL didn’t have to do anything after 911. He just had to sit back and watch Bushco destroy it>
Probably while sitting in a cave under a “Mission Accomplished” banner.
Daschle and Gephardt gave Bush the greatest gift of his gift-rich career when they let his administration off the hook for the 911 attacks, which could have been foiled had the August memo been followed up upon by tighter airport security.
Some people have forgotten about that. I haven’t. And I don’t think the relatives of those who died in the Towers and at the Pentagon should either.
Great pic. She’s fucking horrifying. Republican velociraptor.
Noonan is moonlighting as a barmaid in horrible clothes. Who’d have thunk?
Mounties examine tasers after tests raise concerns.
4 of 41 tasers tested discharged more electricity that Taser International says is possible.

An outfit like that probably cost $2500 at Neiman Marcus.
Your American Exceptionalism dollars at work. Acts of terrorism are up worldwide, what, six times over pre-9/11 levels, but as long as it’s happening somewhere else, it’s all good. “He kept us safe,” emphasis on “us.”
For all we know, the Bush family has been spending the last seven years paying off the Saudis to keep al Qaeda out of the U.S. until at least 2009.
It’s another typical example of Republicans repackaging the narrative. As you say it ignores Bush’s negligence in the run up to 9/11 and all of the events since. But as Republicans found out long ago, any lie repeated often enough becomes the truth.
Where in that oath does it say the President’s job is to keep us safe? Safe from what exactly? We sure weren’t safe from him.
But I suppose that if The Constitution and the Bill of Rights and The Declaration of Independence are just pieces of parchment, then the President’s job can be whatever the President says it is.
Even if we accept Noonan’s absurd premise that Bush has kept Americans safe, what about the AMERICANS that have been killed or maimed because of his unnecessary invasion of Iraq? A much higher number than the casualties on 9/11… I guess they don’t count.
I can’t believe you wrote a article like this. You bitch at Bush for doing the things he is doing to avoid an issue like this in the future, now you are going backwards. Give it a rest, start paying attention to what your buddy Obama is doing, or not doing as we shall soon see.
No, Noonan, he’s kept you safe, and people just like you, card carrying Republicans. The only real problem with that was that he was charged with keeping everyone safe, and he’s done an absolutely shitty job of that. He’s had an administration that is run by the biggest group of closet fuck-ups, of which I’ve ever heard.
So Bushco has kept us safe except for toxic toys, food problems, pharma, mountain tops being shoved off on sleeping kids, And if he has his way in the workplace. Heck of a job Bushy
Oh, Sarah Palin territory, and clearly marked too. Run Noonan, run!
Yes, it’s rather selective credit. The fact that American hasn’t been bombed many more times is more a credit to the tolerance of other nations and their people of us.
Otoh, at this point, no one deserves more credit for the hardship in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, or what’s left of Palestine than the current Bush government.
…”and the surge [’]worked[’], so Iraq is justified!”
I guess former cheerleaders know how important it is to have mobile goalposts.
I disagree. They are openly fuckups.
I should add Haiti to that list.
You forgot the flu. He couldn’t even ensure that we’d be able to get our flu shots.
He also didn’t do a very good job of keeping our 401Ks and IRAs safe.
Or jobs
My link led to the google page, so click on the top article and read about the tests on tasers that was done at the University of Montreal. Testing proved that 4 of 41 taser guns tested discharged more electricity than Taser International said was possible.
But people liked him. Everyone wanted to have a beer with him. My teevee said that made him presidential.
Let’s just add that he couldn’t keep our soldiers from getting electrocuted in the shower or drinking water contaminated with decomposing human remains.
electrocuted [corrected by the mod in your original comment]
“There’s a rough justice with the American people. If a president presides over prosperity, whether he had anything to do with it or not, he gets the credit. If he has a recession, he gets the blame. By that same illogic, Bush and the Republicans are the only ones to allow foreigners to invade the American homeland and kill thousands of innocent American citizens. *g*
Gentle reminder not to engage in fantasy violence, please.
She must have been doing shots with Monica Crowley. “Kept us safe” is Poopsie’s favorite line as I recall.
If I were going to write a history of the Bush-fils presidency, that would be my title: All the sheeple wanted to have a beer with him.
As if the Secret Service would ever allow randomly selected citizens to have a beer with the President. There are plenty of inane bases for choosing a candidate to vote for (I’m voting for McCain because he’s pro-life, except for being pro-death penalty, etc.) However, deciding someone is presidential because she’s the one you’d like to have a beer with is … demeaning.
You are so spot on with this.
Right on man!
Who would want to have a beer with an dry drunk, anyway?
Our “buddy” isn’t president yet. And I recall well before the primaries that Jane Hamsher told a DC insider that whoever becomes the next president will receive the same scrutiny. So you can rest easy, K?
Isn’t he a swell guy?
My title would be: Jesus loves me, so go f### yourself.
That’s Darth Cheney’s line, dosido.
“…the one big thing he had to do after 9/11, the single thing he absolutely had to do, was keep it from happening again.”
Wrong. Again.
The only thing he had to do, the only thing a President has to do is this:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
(my bold)
Not me, for sure. But it has nothing to do with the Dim Son being a dry drunk. I want to have a beer with someone who can hold up their end of the conversation. I’ve never had the sense that Bushie can hold up his end of a conversation, because doing so requires some base of knowledge.
Now you’re stealing from Sarah Palin.
Nooner is on the committee to revise the GW Clusterfuck presidency- the head of the committee is Clusterfuck himself aided by Rover and KKKaren.
Clusteruck telling us now that everyone knew after 9/11 that we HAD to attack Iraq- because of the boxcutters.
jobs? What jobs? shrub’s contribution to America’s economic security has been a sclerotic 0.46% annualized rate of employment growth since he took office 8 years ago, with a heavy tilt toward McJobs. (one should note that during the same period the US population grew at an annualized rate of 0.82, so, in real terms, his net contribution to jobs is negative).
exactly, I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking him who is going to make it to march madness let alone who is mad in March…!
aren’t boxcutters Weapons of Mass Destruction?
After 9-11, Condi said it all when she said, “… but we didn’t know they would fly planes into buildings”. What was she thinking during the first part? They knew there was to be hijacking(s). They just did not know the planes would be used as bombs.
Also, what about the anthrax attacks? Don’t count as terrorist activity?
You’re probably just misunderestimating him. He clearly earned his Harvard MBA on merit./s
And not one person (military or civilian) was demoted, reprimanded or fired for the complete lapse of security on that fateful day. In fact, most got medals or promotions. (Weird, huh?)
Yea…19 guys with box-cutters foiled our TRILLION dollar defenses. The most protected building on the planet, in the middle of the most secure 10sq miles on the planet, gets attacked without ONE shot fired in defense. Believe that and I’ve got a ‘bridge to nowhere’ I’d like to sell ya.
j-IX-o-XI-b
Blub, you are so right and I love your reference to a sclerotic job rating. Very cool ;-)
It’s comforting to see that GW Clusterfuck STILL makes absolutely NO SENSE. I’d hate to think that he’d been holding out on us these past eight years.
Condi thought they would fly planes into cool formations, kind of like the Blue Angels….
We don’t have DEC or Jan negative job growth numbers in yet give him time.
I got a nickle for that bridge…..;-)
Obama is now reading intelligence reports seven days a week as opposed to the 6 days Bush reads them, cause you know terrorists have to take the day off too dont they? Besides, Obama does not seem like the guy who would sit there and piss his pants for 7 minutes after some one just told him that OUR country is under attack. Bush is the worst pres ever, so comparing anybody to him let alone the president elect is just the stupidest thing you could ever do. Bush makes britney spears and anna nicole smith look like geniuses.
yeah but it’s a shared attitude.
How about I Saw the Light while Choking on a Pretzel?
LOL!
When I have nothing to do I debate with myself on whether or not Bush is willfully incompetent or just incompetent.
Thats a tough one, and I dont know which would be worse . . .
Peggy reminds me of the over-attentive high school-mom. The one your friend never wanted to talk about. She attends too many functions, invites the kids over to swim too many times, burns dinner or the barbecue a little often and replaces the new car a lot. And she has to take the Stolichnaya bottles out of the washer and dryer before putting the clothes in.
She also seems to be channeling Barbara Bush. She’s relieved that Shrubby kept his own fans safe. Too bad that he drove his SUV at high speed through the opposing team’s sideline and stands, but the ticket stub says, “Attend at Own Risk”. He didn’t hurt anybody he knew, and daddy finally got him into Yale, so he’s their problem now.
The president’s job is to protect the American people first. All of them, not just those who voted for him as a candidate, or who pay for his pet projects. But in protecting us from harm, he’s supposed to do as little harm to others as possible. An observation several million Iraqis might agree with. It’s no good having him “safely” drive the school bus, if he runs over all the kids who walk to school, now is it, Peggy?
Turns out that the goopers spent $180,000 on Palin’s clothing and accessories and $55,000 on her hair in order to give gooper voters boners…Nice goin goops! How them boners now?
Or economically destroyed, or if you were at the Taj over the holidays.
Also.. are we safer in any way?
As noted above Bush takes a day off in reading Daily briefs for God sake. He has pushed the planet as close to the edge as its ever been thus far.
Clusterfuck was sposed ta be READING his daily briefs- not shittin em.
ahh, ok.
To make my point a little more clear, I was not comparing the two, I was pointing to the future. Bush is old news and basically a waste of time at this point. Work on your critical thinking skills.
Peggy likes ta be shaken- not stirred.
Bush may be keeping Israel from attacking Iran
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/S…..2FShowFull
She gave me a boner, but what does that have to do with anything. This is another waste of time. Let it go, move forward.
why? ’cause he wants to do it first? ;-P
It hasn’t raied here in a week. I take full credit for that.
