Faced with staggering new unemployment figures, Democratic Congressional leaders said on Friday that they were ready to provide a short-term rescue plan for the cash-strapped American automakers, and expected to hold votes on the legislation during a special session next week.

Money will probably come out of the 25 billion dollars appropriated earlier this year for restructuring, which means that Bush won that part of it.  However, this is very much a case of "just find the money", since losing all these jobs, as I’ve repeatedly said, would have thrown the US in a depression.

The impetus to do something appears to have been the half million jobs lost in November which were announced today.

This is only a bridge loan and will need to be revisited in the new year.  GM is hemorrhaging too much money for this to be enough, and despite their happy talk, while Ford’s immediate position is better their long term position is worse.  I really doubt they’ll make it through a long deep recession without help.
