LOL. No, I should have put that line in quotes. It’s from Bill Murray’s masochistic dental patient talking to Steve Martin’s sadistic dentist in LSOH. Funny stuff. So Martin has to figure out if he drills him or not, which choice would make Murray suffer more.
I agree. I so love following the conversation on the different threads but it’s getting to be more difficult now with the posts coming fast and furious on so many different topics, and getting picked up and featured on the front page in some weird order that only a back stage techie would understand…sigh.
Just WAIT Teddy you have to get up at THEIR time… man Oh man that’s the part that really sucks going east… Ya stay up West Coast time and get up East coast time… you won’t be the same until you are back for a week!!
ABC News’ Z. Byron Wolf Reports: Democrats sent a clear message to the White House tonight – make some of the $700 financial industry bailout money available to the domestic auto industry or else. And they want an answer by Friday.
I think this is a good move by the Dems with the Rethugs stonewalling in the Senate force the Prez and Paulson to help the Car makers survive! If they don’t the loss will all be on the Rethugs and it will be just one more nail in the Rethugs coffin… I almost hope they don’t help out but too many lives and our economy are on the line!! The Rethugs sure pissed me off during the hearing today’s what fucking T
OADS!
There is no better example of what’s wrong with our social economy that the Wall Street bailouts v. the Detroit rescue. The Senate couldn’t wait to hand the greedheads on Wall Street their money, despite all the calls and emails they got against it. But now that real jobs that create real things are on the line, there needs to be a plan and the union needs busting.
I am also very, very tired of Harry Reid saying he’s not bringing something to the floor because he doesn’t have the votes. Doesn’t he understand theatre at all? It’s not like you go into every boxing ring knowing you’re gonna win, Harry — sometimes you gotta find out by putting on the show.
He’s easily the worst majority leader in my lifetime, but his peers love him, because they ascribe their increased majorities to his leadership!
Here’s the question I wished (with little real hope of hearing it) would have been asked:
Would you guys, for the good of your companies and industry, promise to step down from any leadership role in your companies and industry, after the funds were allotted?
they are still having battery problems? i remember hearing about a photo shoot but the car would not go up the hill due to problems with the battery iirc
UC professor (Yoo) under fire for White House memo
Berkeley’s city council will delve into national policy again next week when it votes whether to demand the United States charge Berkeley resident and former Bush adviser John Yoo with war crimes. Yoo, a tenured professor at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law, wrote the memos offering legal justification for torture while he worked for the White House from 2001 to 2003.
Mike Rogers of PageOneQ (he who outed Larry Craig) has organized a Big GLBT Bloggers & Citizen Journalists confab here in DeeCee. Lots of fun workshops with people like Joe Sudbay and Matt Stoller, plus a reception tomorrow night at the HRC, where I get to give them a piece (or two! depending on cocktail intake) of my mind.
Harry is an asshole! You would think he would know that sometime you have to show the public that the Rethuglians are there just to obstruct anything the Democrats try to pass! Oh and they can just taste breaking the UAW union and all of it’s retirees. They can eat cake can’t they?? /s
But of course their BFB rich bastards get their gambling debts covered at Tax payer’s expense!!
Am I the only one worried about being hurled into the Twelfth century in the next 46 days?
BushCo has been veddy, veddy busy with the Neocon agenda and his Presidential Prerogatives and signing statements.
At the rate he is going, he will rescind the Emancipation Proclamation at noon on Tuesday.
Does anyone else here find it peculiar that the Goopers attempt to obliterate the New Deal has created a climate where only a new “New Deal” type public works project will save the country from utter ruin?
Hey now, nahant! pretty strong language, coming from you!
Yeah, that Corker dude really got my goat today. Jeez. A one man fillibuster machine. what. a. jerk.
What kills me is that those jerks really don’t care if millions of Americans lose their jobs, their houses, etc like it has nothing to do with the economy that drives wall street. they think money grows on trees.
Nope, I’m right there with ya in my wagon. Bring out yer dead! When I watch the news about third world countries, I’m wondering how much longer we have as a so-called first world country. Are we still industrialized?
And just as they hype their effort up on steroids, they burn the place down…
I think this is a learning phase. They will sit around a big table and use this to fine-tune their plan.
Not really peculiar. The GOPMedia complex is talented at helping Americans forget just how bad things are when GOPs lead the country. Turdblossom and Bigfoot Hughes are already disappearing W as they plan his “legacy” project from the White House. It’s all about clearing everyone’s mind while the Democrats clean up behind the elephants (!) in the circus parade. By the time the circus is running regularly again, it will be time to elect a “new” GOP (probably Jeb!) to put the grownups back in charge.
As Digby said today: for the media, the GOP is the default in-charge party except when things are really fucked up, then the media lets America turn to the Democrats, who never get much credit for fixing the horrors visited upon the nation.
Corker is a complete and utter asshole! He is up for re-election in two years iirc and we should make it a point to move heaven and hell to support everyone who opposes him both Rethugs and Dems alike!
Hopefully, the Dems will graduate out of kindergarten class and actually enact the necessary legislation… But, it is the Dems we’re talking about here…
Something I highly look forward to is the Media response to whatever Obama does about anything.
They have been the Piss boys for BushCo and there is a new Sheriff in town.
I see a lot of suck but do not swallow coming.
I am especially looking forward to the obvious and overdue advances for African Americans that are undoubtably coming.
More power to him for that, it’s been a long time coming and there is going to be a huge, collective head explosion to look forward to from the Right side of the aisle.
Ha Ha Ha Ha!
Today, Bank of America announced it would begin phasing out financing of mountaintop removal operations in Appalachia. The bank is making the change after activists from Natural Resources Defense Council flew executives over coal mine sites and personally introduced them to local residents affected by mountaintop removal.
Isn’t that the truth and the Rethugs don’t give a fuck as long as they are getting rich! Would be nice to make them pay for their stupidity. If there is no manufacturing in this country we may as well just all pack it in and become part of greater China or something. We won WWII because we had such large manufacturing base that could be easily converted to a war manufacturing stance and produce those weapons we would need to defend our selves… But no the Rethuglians think we can just buy all of our weapons… short sighted assholes!
Maybe we can find some bloggers or video makers to tell the stories of people directly affected by Bush, so there is no disappearing.
Soldiers lost limbs because of him. Houses and jobs and pensions and health care, gone. New Orleans devastated. They think they can disappear him? Hell no.
May be but he has to be better than that fucker Corker who is just salivating at the thought of breaking the UAW! I wonder if he realizes if it does happen the bill for their health care will have to be picked up by the tax payers. Oh thats right they don’t pay their share of taxes anyway… fuckers!
Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey said Wednesday that he saw no need for President Bush to issue blanket pardons of officials involved in some of the administration’s most controversial counterterrorism policies.
Mr. Mukasey told reporters that there was “absolutely no evidence” that anyone involved in developing the policies “did so for any reason other than to protect the security in the country and in the belief that he or she was doing something lawful.”
Ain’t it great to watch these fuckers squirm? Hmmmm. Let’s see now. IIRC, accepting a pardon is an admission of guilt, and it also makes one fair game for the European prosecutors operating under the doctrine of “universal jurisdiction,” just like they did with Milosevich. Hmmm. Maybe we can get Obama to promise not to prosecute. Hmmmm.
As long as Ford is alive, he will be trying to drag my party to the right. Way right. And that’s not cool.
Corker – he is odious, and a creep, but his act is completely predictable. And if my party will get off its ass and lead, Corker is not a problem.
Remember what Matt Taibbi said right here in a Salon:
to paraphrase, “You get a reputation for being brave by actually acting bravely.’
It would be nice to see them singing Lets all go the Hague Lets all go the Hague in unison even!
Come on now a one two three.. Lets all go to the
Hague lets all go the Hague..
I’ll take a Republican over a Blue Dog any day. Well, almost any day. When control of the House and/or Senate is in jeopardy, it becomes a different matter. But hopefully those days are gone for a while.
This quote from Ex-Treasury Sec. O’Neill is pretty startling…
If the United States doesn’t get its finances in order, the coming years will make the current recession “look like a child’s birthday party,” said former Treasury secretary and Alcoa chairman Paul O’Neill.
“We’re headed for the wall at lightning speed. And every day that we don’t deal with that set of problems is another day closer to absolutely vaporizing our economy,” he said.
“You get a reputation for being brave by actually acting bravely.’
The Dems don’t need to be brave they just need to force vote after vote on issues that the 95% of the people care about and point out in big bold ways that the Republicans are there for one purpose and one purpose only to obstruct the work that needs to be done to make this a country that is truly for the people..
And whatever disease that Harry is afflicted with that makes him want to lick the soles of McConnell’s loafers, well, only a primary will cure him of. He is a bought dog.
BCT,
I haven’t read that one yet. Great Christmas reminder, thanks. I did read Who Let the Dogs In? : Incredible Political Animals I Have Known (Paperback) by Molly Ivins.
It was a delight.
Home from work. Next week – finals. This weekend – a seven-inch high pie of papers and exams to go through, plus finishing my analysis of Riki Ott’s book, Not One Drop.
Hey, I’m with O’Neill. Finally someone talking sense. I’m sick of people telling me that this downturn “might last up to two year,” while I’m praying that it’ll end in a decade.
That’s exactly what he put forth in all his testimony. That as long as their conduct was or is well-intentioned, it is not to be confused (or compared) to criminal.
The Ashcroft/AguG OLC is what Senator Whitehouse described it as: “George Bush’s little shop of legal horrors.”
Yes, it would go a long way towards repairing the reputation of the Senate Democrats if Harry would make the GOPs stand up and be the obstructionists they actually are. People don’t understand the virtual filibuster; the media only tells the story correctly when the cots and pizza come out for an all-nighter.
Not sure where they’ll first pick their battle, but I hope it’s soon. The Democrats need to break through the media filter; putting on a show is one of the few tools they actually have in their arsenal.
Another member of Feingold’s sub-committee on the US Constitution, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (Democrat-Rhode Island), last year declassified the existence of three more OLC opinions, which he said ruled that the president could secretly amend executive orders governing the activities of US agencies and decide when it was lawful to use his powers as commander-in-chief to override other branches of the government.
The OLC, Whitehouse told last week’s hearing, “became kind of the little shop of legal horrors that would deliver what was requested” by a White House working to implement a radically expanded view of presidential power.
Secretly amending public presidential executive orders, like the one numbered 12333 that governs the activities of US intelligence agencies, Whitehouse said, would be tantamount to “saying that the executive can use the executive orders of this country as a screen behind which they can operate programs directly contrary to the text of the executive order.”
When she went off on the 2008 big campaign trail, the state seemed to be awash in money. She claimed to be “building a gas pipeline” that probably cannot be financed.
Now, with oil prices plummeting, she’s facing an inconvenient reality. But, from her introduction of the main elements of the medical care reform package today, I’m pleasantly surprised – a lot more money for pre-natal and infant programs, and even a nod toward head start.
I hear you on that. But I give him a lot of credit for bailing on Bush, and for talking sense now. That said, he was certainly a proponent of Reaganomics.
add in the fact that i’m a news junkie and i’m irish and that bloke murphy is a cousin o’mine (him and his fancy smancy law)…. yeah, friday news dump should be a good one and i’m gonna miss it.

I’m getting really tired of this meme. I heard a caller to CNN today saying autoworkers need to take a 50% pay cut because they’re making $80 an hour and watching a machine work for them. Let me tell you some things.
I worked at a Ford plant on a F150 line from 2006-2007. I worked my ass off. I sweat in well over 100 degree heat, I bled from injuries, I had constant severe back pains, and many other things. Every week the emergency bell went off in the plant and people were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. I don’t remember any machine doing any work for me at all. Those little video clips you see on the news are not the norm for auto plants any more than the images of Iraq on CNN are. They’re sanitized images.
Oh, I made $14.84/hr as well. They don’t pay people $28 anymore unless you were working there since before the two-tiered wage structure was enacted. I also got almost no benefits. My medical insurance was ER only. No drug coverage, no office calls. I got sick last fall with a kidney infection and it cost me $4,000 even with my so called insurance. I didn’t get paid time off for being severely ill either.
Mind you, this is a UAW job with the Big 3.
I’m so goddamn sick of being told I just made too much money and had it sooooo good. Nobody would work like an animal like that for $14 an hour unless they had no choice, and people don’t.
I was laid off at the end of this July. I have no “Job Bank” or any such, another concession the union made for newer workers. I just collect unemployment and beg for a fast food or retail job.
Sorry, needed to vent. I know none of you people know me. Have a good day, and don’t believe this anti-union lie the media is spreading.
Fucking Repukes just want to bust unions for their rich Corporate owners so they can pay their workers even less, next thing ya know they will want them to work for minimum wage which they would never raise
!
I took on my biggest student load ever, this semester – 263 students. I encourage their essays – about listening to live music. Of the 400 essays in that pile, 25 will be very good, between three and eight, excellent, worth saving. I’ll probably help or even inspire another 30 or so kids with the comments I write on their papers.
The books I’m re-reading to help give Ott’s new book context for the review, and for myself, aren’t daunting either. I’m happy to be doing all this stuff.
I know it has been reported to death by KO and Rachel but MSM? Noooo oh noooo the big three just didn’t make good cars!! Last I read their cars are very bit as good as the Japanese and Germans. They have also been building cars that get great milage in other countries but they can’t import them into the US???
I didn’t get a chance to see the testimony today, so I haven’t heard if the UAW rep debunked this myth. It would seem to be a good idea to get out on the field and get that knocked down immediately.
My cool my cool where is my kool…never had it never will Zappa said the universe is made of stupidity because there is so much more of it.’I say the universe is made of immorality as there is so much more of that. Think about it. We westerners live in a bubble while billions of others are near starvation. Aids is rampant in Africa. Wars and slaughter abound and we are inventing killing machines…
Yes he tried to but Corker kept interrupting and po pooing him he said they had to give up more and more.. What I really don’t get is all the other Car makers in the world get help from their Governments and our don’t want to level the playing field! Maybe just with only health care just imagine if the big 3 didn’t have the health care obligations they have how much more competitive they would be!
She completed the best book there is, on the sociology of the Exxon Valdez, after the Supreme Court judgement. It’s a real warm read, full of anecdotes about Cordova, where she lives. Best Alaska book in a while.
I’ll host her time at fdl on Sunday, December 14, from 2 to 4 Pacific.
Did she mention the sociologist that Exxon first hired to research the effects of punitive awards…? I saw a few articles that mentioned it in the context that a SCOTUS footnote has created a firestorm over corp. sponsored studies…
can’t read comments, but thanks for this clip. RIP Levi Stubbs, the voice of Audrey II.
Already one of the best singers in music history as the Four Tops front man, then gives one of the best voiceover performances in movie history. What a talent.
Suz!!!

I need a nice long root canal, I’m sure of it.
hey pups – how is everyone doing tonight?
Suzanne!
Some bozo put a survey popup across the screen. So you lucked out CT. Now we have obstacle courses…what is next?
Hi Suzanne
My hubby who is tax attorney, notices a certain bias of what flavorof lawyer gets it in the movies…

Heh, So you just had to respond to it, eh? ;-)

Steve Martin is so awesome in this one.
He’ll be a dentist…he’ll be a success!
So does Audrey II remind you of a certain treasury secretary? wall street banker? what are you trying to say Suz???
It would not get out of the way… revenge of the mod, s)
You folks are a lot better to hang with than the local Community services district board.
*innocent look*
Rethugs in general? :P
A long roor canal? Really? Bummer ana expensive to boot. Sorry about that.
tis from the movie bb – the massocistic bill murray patient character played to the sadistic steve martin dentist character.
not fooled
My, it’s late here on the East Coast! One might even say it’s Late Late!
LOL. No, I should have put that line in quotes. It’s from Bill Murray’s masochistic dental patient talking to Steve Martin’s sadistic dentist in LSOH. Funny stuff. So Martin has to figure out if he drills him or not, which choice would make Murray suffer more.
a little dark humor for late nite.
I’m fine but I do hate dentists.
My pleasure Suz… Too bad ya couldn’t stop by and say hello before to run back to the cozy little B&B (:>((

Why is this video a metaphor for the entire Bush administration and the Neocon agenda?
i bet it wudda be cheaper for them to fly in commercial business class
*whistling and looking around*
Actually the Hybrids were carried on the backs of people who shower after their shifts.
My bad.
Actually, I saw where the Volt that the GM guy “drove” spend a good deal of time on the back of a flatbed truck.
No link, I am going to fall down shortly.
I thought Google and Linux were allergic to one another…! ;-)

too bad the potential threat to his re-election got indicted
110th congressional FAIL! Are we going to have a leader for the 111th?
I am very much equating Reid with Lieberman.
Berkeley
I remember Harry calling himself a ‘fighter’ at yKos One.
I take him at his word, but I never figured what he was fighting for.
Oh, wait…
You’re not holding your breath, eh?

Oh, I forgot – we have to be able to build stuff.
Never mind.
Hopefully, the Dems will graduate out of kindergarten class and actually enact the necessary legislation… But, it is the Dems we’re talking about here…
ja, pretty much.
Right. Harold Ford is itching to get back into the ring with Corker.
I will have to leave the party.

The MIC can make stuff, we don’t ‘need’ a buncha factories yet.
So much for all that primary talk about the death of the DLC :/
start your own party newt?

I haven’t read that one yet. Great Christmas reminder, thanks. I did read Who Let the Dogs In? : Incredible Political Animals I Have Known (Paperback) by Molly Ivins.
It was a delight.
Hiya, pups.
Would that be MR yoo?
Wtf is this, ET…?
Where was that frankness while he was at the helm, hmmm…?
I will dance when that asshole only has a tin can to talk into and no string!
Let’s go to the Hague
Ah, let’s go to the Hague
Let’s go to the Hague, (oh baby)
Sorry. Forgot to link.
sending this out to georgie and co
Itty-bitty steps, nahant, at least it’s one less megaphone…! ;-)
Looking forward mightily to that Book Salon, ET. So glad you’re hosting it.
OK Margot you finish words and music and I will Use my CDs to burn copies for all… for a small fee of course /s
“You’ve Got Your Work Cut Out For You, Gay Rights Movement”
And now I must to bed. Goodnight all you Westerners and sleepless others!
See you tomorrow.
Woo-Hoo! ET is hosting a Book Salon? Right on, ET!
g’nite teddy in dc
Aloha, Teddy!
Sunday, December 14, 2008 5:00pm Eastern
I want three Giant steps CT this asshole needs to have a rag stuffed into his mouth! But I would miss KO picking on him…nah stuff that rag in there /s
That’s our “open and transparent” Sarah, eh?
When she went off on the 2008 big campaign trail, the state seemed to be awash in money. She claimed to be “building a gas pipeline” that probably cannot be financed.
Now, with oil prices plummeting, she’s facing an inconvenient reality. But, from her introduction of the main elements of the medical care reform package today, I’m pleasantly surprised – a lot more money for pre-natal and infant programs, and even a nod toward head start.
We’ll see.
Nite Teddy Dawn comes a lot earlier on the East coast /s
any guesses what the news dump will be tomorrow – when i’m on the road and will have no access to knowledge?
i figure boosh is gonna announce more pardons.
Wonderful song–thank you so much, Suz.
Pardon me
i wish he was around to sing it directly to boosh
Things are so flaky right now that you have a pretty good chance of being informed as to Chimpy’s actions by consulting The Onion.
Me too ….. but…
Never fails, eh? Plus the fact it’s Friday too…! ;-)
I hear you on that. But I give him a lot of credit for bailing on Bush, and for talking sense now. That said, he was certainly a proponent of Reaganomics.
Bloody glad Whitehouse is on *our* team.
add in the fact that i’m a news junkie and i’m irish and that bloke murphy is a cousin o’mine (him and his fancy smancy law)…. yeah, friday news dump should be a good one and i’m gonna miss it.
Heh, which is more daunting the books or the papers…? ;-)
From a commenter at Democraticunderground:
Fucking Repukes just want to bust unions for their rich Corporate owners so they can pay their workers even less, next thing ya know they will want them to work for minimum wage which they would never raise
!
Olbermann was all over this last week.
Facts are stubborn things.
The time factor is the only daunting part.
You’re a good man, ET! *g*
Citizen EdwardTeller:
Yo Brother Teller, what’s this about a “book review” for the lakeside canines? Who’s this Rikki Ott? When’s the review goin’ up?
EW provided a good synopsis of the hearings…
Einstein agreed that Man’s stupidity was boundless…
time for me to head out pups. thanks for hanging out with me tonight – i’d stay longer but i gotta long drive ahead of me tomorrow.
remember, lurk prefers dark chocolate and pecans
Yes he tried to but Corker kept interrupting and po pooing him he said they had to give up more and more.. What I really don’t get is all the other Car makers in the world get help from their Governments and our don’t want to level the playing field! Maybe just with only health care just imagine if the big 3 didn’t have the health care obligations they have how much more competitive they would be!
The sun also rises…and tommorow will be a sunnny day…I will get warmed up. Now to sleep perchance to dream…
Aloha, Suz! Safe journeying tomorrow!
Like I said Corker is an asshole he should be charged with insider violations for his stupid remarks that drove down the price of the stock!
Aloha, bb!
Citizen Norske,
Riki Ott is a prophetess.
Good Night Suz and drive safely on your trip home!
Safe trip tomorrow, Suzanne.
Did somebody yell “Scrum”…? ;-)
I have never figured this out, but people seem to forget the second part of the moniker…
Did she mention the sociologist that Exxon first hired to research the effects of punitive awards…? I saw a few articles that mentioned it in the context that a SCOTUS footnote has created a firestorm over corp. sponsored studies…
There is a second part…? ;-)
Well pups have people showing up early in the AM so I will bid you all good night!
And don’t let the bed bugs bite ya ass… /s
Aloha, nahant!
nite nahant
i’m out too
take care of the joint
Aloha, newt! I guess I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu, too! Aloha Oe!!!
Hey, it has gotten tto be my bedtime
g’nite all.
(Been mostly multitasking all evening, but following your excellent thread.)
can’t read comments, but thanks for this clip. RIP Levi Stubbs, the voice of Audrey II.
Already one of the best singers in music history as the Four Tops front man, then gives one of the best voiceover performances in movie history. What a talent.
