Oh, the final 46 days after eight years of pettiness and arrogance goes out the way you’d expect:
The outgoing Bush administration is planning to announce a broad new "right of conscience" rule permitting medical facilities, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare workers to refuse to participate in any procedure they find morally objectionable, including abortion and possibly even artificial insemination and birth control.
For more than 30 years, federal law has dictated that doctors and nurses may refuse to perform abortions. The new rule would go further by making clear that healthcare workers also may refuse to provide information or advice to patients who might want an abortion.
Oh awesome, now medical practitioners can refuse to even "advise" you of things like RU-486, condoms, let alone abortion. Finally, via President Bunnypants we as a society have evolved (sorry "creatively designed") to the point where your medical treatment is determined by the guy at the Wal-Mart Pharmacy who doesn’t want to give out your birth control prescription. Because "God" has so obviously blessed him. Rollback, indeed.

*sigh* Poor Attaturk, nobody is around to snag the Zed… ‘Cept me…! ;-)
Good morning CTuttle..did you feel alone in the universe for awhile? That picture captures the ugliness of that man’s attitude; the stuff of nightmares.
I suspect that we will see many more horrid rulings from the Decider before he is gone. His buddy, Mukasey is doing his best to rewrite history.
US official opposes prosecutions for torture advice.

Morning Attaturk. That vengeful, spiteful, revolting little man is just trying to ensure that his legacy is tarnished as much as possible before he goes off into the sunset with a big “Fuck you America”.
BBC reports this, good on old europe, protecting civilization.

Congress has warned Bush not to sign a Doha trade deal. This battle has been ongoing for 7 years. Bush wouldn’t be planning on screwing the US farmers and workers on his way out..just to prove he can, would he? We know that he just hates the word no when it is applied to him.

……while throwing one last little bone to the Evangelical Christians for getting him elected to a second and destructive term in office. Good riddance W, and I hate Karen Hughes as much as Karl Rove.
Speaking of sour little men, Mukasey seems to have vinegar in his veins. Hard to believe that someone so contemptuous of human rights could ever have become a judge, much less AG. There’s also a strong whiff of xenophobia in whatever he says about the detainees.
Well said! The deranged piece of human filth thinks that what he does is great, though. He thinks his legacy will be a positive one. Not a glimmer of understanding as to how much he is hated around the world.
Fuck you America has been the Bush family tradition from the start. What can be redeemable about a family who made their money by financing/supporting/and selling to Hitler?
Hours ago, there was a discussion about Sadaam. He was suckered by Bush 1 who told him that the US would not get involved if he invaded Kuwait. The conversations about that are found in Bush 1’s Library. Sadaam got invaded because he was adjusting oil prices and was dropping the US dollar.
Twice an American Bush president bombed Iraq using WMD as the false excuse. Sadaam’s weapons factory was bombed by Israel before the start of Gulf 1. That information is found in Margaret Thatcher’s library.
The true axis of evil is the US, Israel, and the UK.
Sadaam was the one trying to make peace in the Middle East and Bush 1 and all of his nasty buddies were having none of that. It has always been about stealing the oil of the Middle East Countries. When Iran dropped the US dollar a few months ago, the threats of attack increased rapidly from the US and Israel.
I always think of the fact that he hung a picture of George Orwell in his office. Some role model!
Those that voted him in have much to answer for.
The list of purely dreadful people that have popped up from under rocks during the last eight years is long. Maybe the ruinator can have a bbq, McSame style, in Crawford some day after a lot of the bastards have done their gaol time. Or send them all to Alcatraz and have the party there.
and the UK.
What was that woman’s name, April somethingorrather, that told Sadaam to go ahead and invade Kuwait?
George Orwell! I never knew. I don’t know of any picture books by Orwell so I doubt……. wait. Maybe Laura read to him every night before beddy bye.
Using the pretext of Sadaam ignoring 1 UN resolution the neo-cons (MIC?) invaded and occupied Iraq all the while ignoring the 22 UN resolutions that Israel has ignored.
That is one of the reasons that Schumer pressed so hard for his nomination. In Schumers narrow minded NY world anyone that hates Arabs loves Israelis and if you love Israel you must be OK for the Likuders.
April Glaspie was the US Ambassador to Iraq. That woman tried with every bit of strength she had to stop the US from invading. She basically dropped from view after because she knew too much. This I remember from reading records at the Bush 1 Library. She doesn’t deserve blame..she was heroic in her efforts.
Yes..and in SOFA those restrictions on trade are finally taken away after all of these years.
The UN is stopped by the US every time they try to sanction Israel. Israel has been called out on their war crimes since 1968 by the UN. Wiki has the sanctions year by year..some go missing..wikileaks would likely have any missing years.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Cohen and Kristof this morning. Ms. Collins, in “One Singular Sensation,” says a comment made by Gov. Ed Rendell seemed to infer that single unmarried people, like the homeland security nominee Janet Napolitano, have no life outside of work. Just my opinion, but having seen him during the primary and general election campaigns he comes across as a condescending horse’s ass… Mr. Cohen, in “A Court for a New America,” says only by realigning America with international law can the damage inflicted on America’s image and appeal by the Bush administration be undone. (He’s writing from the Hague. Hmmmmm….) Mr. Kristof, writing from Rawalpindi, gives us “Raising the World’s I.Q.” He says one of the most simple and effective ways to improve the physical and mental health of impoverished people is to add iodine to the salt supply.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes today. The first wingnut “war on Christmas” letter to the editor blossomed in the Savannah Daily Disappointment yesterday, so I guess pretty soon I’ll be confronted with some of the local talking hairdos doing “nutcase on the street” interviews on the local teebee stations, fanning the flames. [sigh] Have a great day.
Duh… You can find those columnists here. Must. Get. More. Caffeine.
You mean Bush1 actually used April… say it isn’t so /s*
“The straight talk coming from the White House (condemning Saddam for invading Kuwait) is in sharp contrast to the ambiguous, sometimes misleading messages given to Saddam before the Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait.
“Just before that invasion — and perhaps contributing to Saddam’s decision to undertake it — there was a series of limp declarations by U.S. officials that may have misled Saddam.
“One of those messages, delivered in late July by U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie to Saddam in a private meeting, said that the United States did not take a position ”on Arab-Arab” disputes. Saddam understood that to mean that the United States would not react to his invasion of Kuwait.”
I wandered over to wiki and found that April went to the UN and then served as Consul General in Cape Town, S. Africa until retiring in 2002. Sent to Africa..that kept her out of the public eye.
Well..what else could it mean but “go for it?” He was an awful human, but he was outsmarted by more awful humans.
there is an option for those people who find legal practices in their field objectionable;
GET A DIFFERANT FRIGGING JOB MORON
no, these rediculous new “options” have to be rescinded, I believe they need to be rescinded for abortion as well, if you don’t want to perform an abortion that don’t become a doctor, simple stuff
Since when do presidents get to unilaterally make laws/rules regarding medical care etc. for civilians?
Rachel called that “the Amish Bus Driver principle.” The Amish don’t believe in operating motor vehicles, which is very much their right. But they cannot simultaneously exercise that right and hold a job as a bus driver. Rachel believes that the same goes for people healthcare workers who have religious objections to delivering to the public the healthcare to which they are entitled.
Since the New World Order
that is a great analogy and one of the reasons we love racheal
I am with you on this, congress needs to simply rescind all executive orders as having not passed the due process muster
It’s been a long time since I read the whole constitution, but I don’t recall anywhere that it gives the president that sort of legislative power. Impeach his ass, while there’s still time.
Morning All,
If Bush passes them either congress or the new president should remove them as well as authority to pass them. What has happened in the past has been that congress has past legislation that allows the govt. agencies to write the rules and regulations which are supposed to go out for public comment for a period of sixty days and then modified after comments. I haven’t seen this being done.
That ‘piece of paper’ got run over by Bush’s signing statements and veto pen.
Impeach only if to stop him from trying to pardon himself. A scenario that could happen is that Bush pardons Cheney and then declares Cheney acting president for an hour so that Cheney can pardon him. Sound impossible..maybe..but you know Bush has a plan to save his butt. Muckasey will help him do it somehow.
If the bushie efU rule changes are legal and cannot easily be overturned surely obama can just come up with his own rules zapping the bushie ones. Didn’t bushie do that to some of Clinton’s last minute rules?
Just eliminate the rules would suffice either Obama or congress not sure how it works but something has to be done. The dept of Labor is putting some new rules out there that will screw workers royally.
Does Kristoff have any suggestions for raising the IQ of Georgians that voted for Chambliss? He apparently appealls to the squinty eyed, bango pickin, porch rockin, moonshine swillin, knuckle draggin white troglydytes of the preachy state. Glad I’m not in the land of Dixie.
Just what did a cave dweller ever do to you? Please use a more appropriate noun! Troglydytes(sic) indeed!
The rethugs don’t want to raise them thar IQs> That is the real amerika don’t ya know.
the way I read that law, he is only prohibited from pardoning himself against an impeachment, the process of impeachment does not prevent him from pardoning himself from the crimes he is being impeached for
ianal
Any medical procedure found morally objectionable? Great. Just great. How many right wing doctors will refuse to treat patients who have this ‘disease’:
LIBERALISM!
I’m sure George Bush wouldn’t object either. Asshole.
What happens when some mini-post-president goes in for treatment of a heart attack and the staff finds it morally objectionable to treat a war criminal who is personally responsible for over a million death in Iraq.
Works for me.
Good Morning…Is anyone still here? What a terrible image to start the day. Yuk
You can’t fix stupid. *g*
My fave is the Cohen piece. And I hope Obama signs the International Court ratification. Then, even if America doesn’t have the guts to prosecute these people, sometime down the road, the ICC could get them.
“Of the many issues that have soured relations between Europe and the United States under the Bush administration, few have been as poisonous as America’s refusal to join the world’s first permanent war crimes court here. The snub has been seen as a symbol of U.S. contempt for the rule of law.”
http://www.iht.com/articles/20…..dcohen.php
It’s rather ingenious for Cohen to be suggesting this backdoor way for the prosecution of war crimes even if Mukasey (urp) doesn’t “think” there is any justifiable basis for prosecution.
That said, I truly do wonder if a blanket repeal of all these unconstitutional “rules” signed by an out-going “administration” will be done. It’s all busy work and it all depends on whether Obama remains true to what he said in his nomination speech with all the retreads from the past who “wouldn’t know change if it slapped them upside the head.”
http://www.thenation.com/doc/2…..l=hp_picks
Wow!
So, now that we have this “conscience” rule in place for physicians, can I refuse to participate in schemes imposed by private insurers that distort the care I provide patients away from a sound standard of care just so that the insurer can chisel a few bucks off the sick?
No?!
Oh, wait, I forgot. We’re talking freedom of religion here, and I forgot that the Golden Rule applies — “He who has the gold, makes the rules.”
The administration on this axis is setting up traps for the new Obama administration, the way Dole set up Clinton on the gays in the military. They want to put Obama between a rock and a hard place. My guess is that Obama will stick it back in their faces by rescinding the order. This will enrage the base, which as we say, ‘must be good for the Republicans’, but hard to see how it will help them anywhere else.
Money talks and he walks…
