CNN calls it for Chambliss.
41% Martin
59% Chambliss
(71% of precincts reporting)
Here it is, the day we (and Joe Lieberman) have all been waiting for: The Georgia Senate runoff between Democrat Jim Martin and Saxby Chambliss, one of most odious Republicans to walk the earth. In case you need reminding, Chambliss is the prince of a fellow who beat war hero Max Cleland (you know, the guy who left three limbs in Vietnam) by calling him soft on terror and morphing his face with Osama bin Laden’s.
And more recently, Chambliss has admitted to not knowing what a recession is or if we’re in one (then lied about it), complained that he’s in a runoff because too many blacks and not enough of "our folks" voted, shoved a camera when a reporter asked him why he wouldn’t testify in the Imperial Sugar lawsuit, gaybaited his opponent, and accused him of being soft on pedophiles, despite the fact that Martin’s own child was once kidnapped
Saxby Chambliss is a thoroughly repulsive bottomfeeder of the first order, and a true student of the Rove/Atwater/Nixon school of sleazy campaigning. I guess it goes without saying that I’m kinda rooting for Jim Martin, although it’s not looking too good at the moment…
(Megakudos to Blue Texan, whose excellent work I am totally ripping off here.)

Go Martin!
I really, really, *really* hate Saxby Chambliss.
Other than that, I’m pretty much neutral.
In terms of it not being able to happen to a nicer person, Saxby Chambliss is the Rick Santorum of this election.
lol
hehehe.
OT- has Obama changed his position on jobs since the campaign from creating 2.5 million jobs to saving or creating 2.5 million jobs?
The “nicer” is ironic for those who have never seen that expression before.
What a greatly brief piece; but sounds like it says it all. I surely wish the numbers were looking better for Martin…but the night is young. Wonder how the Saxby grand daughter has been feeling?

FWIW, it was a lot like this on Election Day, where early on it looked like there was no chance in hell that Martin would force a runoff. But no, I’m not superoptimistic.
eek! Cobb County reporting in as kool-aid kounty.
those are crummy numbers
ooo thanks!
Chatham County is voting right, thank heaven…
They’re slowly improving, but not fast enough, I don’t think.
Good! Right means left, right?
I probably should have said “correctly!”
Marion, keeping my fingers crossed, but it ain’t looking good.
Obama could have done more for Martin in Georgia. It just proves that it doesn’t matter who wins in this post partisan world. Sure that Obama will get along just fine with Chambliss. After all, with election Obama is now a member of the ruling elite where party affiliations don’t mean all that much but class solidarity means everything.
The fact of the matter is that even if Martin wins and there’s a 60-vote majority in the Senate Toad Lieberman has already stated that he thinks that’s a bad idea. Why they didn’t kick his foul butt to the curb I’ll NEVER understand.
Seeing as how this is a special election, I think the low score should win, like in golf.
Lettuce not 4-get this chamblis classic
NBC calls it for Chambliss.
lol :)
fork
Yep..I’ll never forget it…couldn’t forget it the first time ’round. But I surely can’t look at it again.
it was never gonna happen
I’ve learned a good bit about Martin this campaign- he’s a great guy. Whatever the final vote, he put the fire to that pus-bag Chambliss.
With luck maybe Saxby will get nabbed playing footsie with an undercover officer in an airport restroom.
Hello, all. What’s up? (besides Saxby news)
Why is Ann Marie Cox a bobblehead on Rachel’s show? What are her bona fides?
“GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss wins a Georgia runoff, ending Democratic hopes of a filibuster-proof majority, CNN projects.”
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Yeah, Joe was *totally* going to vote against those Republican filibusters.
Can anyone remember exactly when it was decided that it was just totally fine to have voting machines with absolutely no way to verify election results? Or am I the only one here who gives a shit?
Great job Georgia! Stay classy!
Union workers, obviously, are not Chambliss supporters.
Hey Jacqrat!
So, why do we need Joe now? Can anyone remind me?
I was shocked that the dem congress didn’t get real specific wrt elections right off the bat in 2006.
I don’t like it. I took a picture of my vote. Not that that will help or anything but at least I got something for my vote.
The hanging chad fiasco after the 2000 election provided the incentive for everyone to switch to electronic ballots. I just assumed the ones that don’t leave a paper trail were designed that way to help Republicans steal elections.
I think it’s for the class and camaraderie he brings to the caucus.
After the hanging chads we got optical scanners and “SAT” ballots that worked just fine, thank you very much. Then after 1 or 2 years they were scrapped for the shit we have now. The Secty of State was, of course, a Republican at the time…….
We’re still using optical scanners and “SAT” ballots here. Hope they stick with it.
da goobers have it, move on
Because Lieberman won his senate seat without a recount. He votes for the country not his party.
Yup help republicans steal elections. Like the 2004 Wa st. govenors election where it took 4 recount to come up with the results the Dems wanted? Counting dead peoples votes. Seattle is the new chicago vote and vote often. Ha
Thank you Ga. Checks and balances still exist!!!!!!!
There are a lot of stupid people in Georgia. Sorry–but that is the truth. Schools suck, nobody knows what this election meant, Chambliss is a champion liar, Obama didn’t show up so lots of people didn’t pay attention (ya need the star power to persuade people to go vote), and then you have the media and the voting machines, and a candidate who didn’t seem to care in the end. It doesn’t matter, because in reality the Democrats need at least 70 party members to get a filibuster-proof majority. There are at least 10 Democrats-in-name-only who wouldn’t vote for progressive legislation if it paid them millions to do it. They already have their millions and they hate the middle class.
Let’s see. McCain got 52% of the vote in GA and Chambliss got 60%. Maybe, Obama didn’t win… Maybe McCain was such a loser that he (deliberately?) threw the election to Obama.
Without McCain dragging them down, looks like Republicans have a chance.
Let’s look at the issues for a moment. Martin favored Amnesty for illegals at the expense of ordinary Americans. Chambliss opposed Amnesty.
Who is really looking out for the middle class in this country? It sure wasn’t McCain and Martin looks like he was just a McCain clone.
Southerners voting against their own interests? Again?
Shocking!
I always thought the talk of a 60 vote threshold made no sense for the reason questioneverything gives at #47. At last now that talking point can be put to rest. I think Harry Reid, Obama, and the other Democratic Senators can count as well as we can. They knew that Chambliss was the heavy favorite which gets to the point that thekowtowing to Lieberman had nothing to do with a filibuster proof majority it was always just another typical Democratic cave.

Georgia is a pretty big state, population-wise. How can the vast majority of them elect Chambliss? (Yes, the Cleland deal was horrid, but also his pedophilia. A hideous, hideous “man.”)
I want to hear again how all states are equal — there is no real difference between, say, New York and Mississippi.
I have never been to Georgia. I never want to go either. Now tell me again how Georgia is just like Califorenia. Go ahead, southerners.
Type. CALIFORNIA.
