Who'da thunk that that the New York Times Op Ed page, home of outsourcing cheerleader Tom "for the love of god, not the shopping malls" Friedman, would all of a sudden develop a sense of outrage about local jobs sent overseas by owners trying to hold on to an unsustainable business model by slashing costs?
Pretty much anybody who saw this coming
But then in October, Dean Singleton, The Associated Press’s chairman and the head of the MediaNews Group — which counts The Pasadena Star-News, The Denver Post and The Detroit News in its stable of 54 daily newspapers — told the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association that his company was looking into outsourcing almost every aspect of publishing, including possibly having one news desk for all of his papers, “maybe even offshore.”
Noting that most preproduction work for MediaNews’s papers in California is already outsourced to India, cutting costs by 65 percent, Singleton advised, “If you need to offshore it, offshore it,” and said after the speech, “In today’s world, whether your desk is down the hall or around the world, from a computer standpoint, it doesn’t matter.”
You may remember Mr. Singleton.
He's the nice man who's been using the Associated Press (and Senator McCain's great and good friend Ron Fournier) to spike Democratic candidates who don't support relaxing media ownership rules.
Presumably his new staff will be equally deft at balancing their role as guardians of our democracy with their concern for Mr. Singleton's portfolio.
On the other hand, he did manage to get Maureen Dowd concerned about somebody's job (although not about math, which, of course, is hard. It's .075¢ for your thoughts, dear. You're welcome).
h/t Molly, who's pretty much your source for things Dowd.

I’m still not sure how it works to outsource news coverage. Don’t the reporters actually have to, you know, attend meetings locally sometimes?
Hey, thanks for the linkie-love, Julia.
Don’t cry for Tom, please. I’d say wifey’s stock will rise in, oh, I’d say about 6 months.
(Drum roll, rimshot.)
Not if you know what you want the message to be no matter what happens in a meeting.
Oh. Right.
I keep forgetting that. I guess I had too many family members who were actual reporters and reported the facts as they were rather than someone else’s preconceived plan.
Journalism Students paid minimum wage could submit notes with key points by email to actual reporters or newswriters paid below minimum wage in India. The “American” newspaper or magazine would then be purchased by jobless Americans seeking work in the classifieds.
The best thing about oustsourcing is the possibility that Flat World Friedman coud be outsourced.
Why would they pay Journo students a minimum wage and then pay someone else a second time to re-write the few facts reported?
Journo students working for minimum wage are already pretty much the norm.
Of course, most of the actual good reporters majored in something other than “journalism”. Most journo majors just learn how to present the CW and not rock the boat.
There’s big money in oustsourcing. There’s a 40year old millionaire in Orlando running an outsourcing biz. He sets up boiler rooms in the Ukraine. These Ukranian IT workers earn peanuts, while the boss reaps millions in contracts with American companies.
I wonder how much money these companies are saving and how much of the effort is aimed primarily at union busting.
Probably not. Commercial real estate is going to take a big hit in 2009. If his wife’s business is now so devalued, then its probably heavily leveraged, and as rents disappear, then “poof” bankruptcy follows.
In commercial real estage, unlike homes, the bankruptucy judge can “cram-down” the loan amount (reduce its outstanding balance).
Or, this could be a game to wipe out a bunch of debt.
Let’s outsource the right wing elite.
Here’s some fun collages:

Be the media.
I thought we weren’t supposed to dump our toxic sludge abroad.
No, no, no. What you don’t understand is that we aren’t creating a foreign right wing elite–we’re just getting our right wing elitism cheaper by paying the lower rate abroad. And just consider: by paying a Chinese right-wing nutjob to deliver O’Reilly-esque tirades, we not only get a cheaper demagogue but also wingnutism that 99%+ of Americans just plain can’t understand.
I don’t think so, either. I was referring to what is known as (Thank you, Atrios) Friedman Units. Hence the title, “Another FU For Tom Friedman.” If you don’t know about Atrios’ Friedman Units, refer to wikipedia. There’s an entry for it.
They’ve run into that problem already with the big conglomerates buying up rural radio stations and putting them on autopilot. When local emergencies happen, you can’t get on the radio to warn people because some guy a thousand miles away is the program director and he can’t be reached.
Not if ‘reporting’ is merely regurgitating politico/corporate talking points.
The Pasadena (CA) Star-News, a very conservative rag that surprisingly endorsed Obama, outsourced the Pasadena City council meeting reporting to India.
I don’t know if they use notes or a live feed. The blow-by-blow may be true but there’s no accounting for the personalities involved or for the ramifications for the city of any actions taken or prior history or anything. Anyone can write a he said/she said; we need more than that.
I see it as a way to cut costs and circulation in one clean move.
What’s so hard about being a “jernalister” when every story begins with “U.S. officials say…”
Otherwise, it’s fifty pages of Walmart ads, sports scores, and weather.
Actually, most reporting from news organisations is just mere stenography, nothing else. There’s no soul, no depth, and certainly not an intelligent point of view coming from the reporter themselves. It’s all so anonymous without a shred of creativity.
Besides, didn’t most of these journalists support outsourcing and told workers who lost their jobs to “suck it up”?
