State Bird "I Saw The Light" (Thanks to the gang at MOKB)
I would like to dedicate this jubilant song to all who skipped the shopping madness today and to those who survived it.
What’s on your mind tonight?

Hi ES!
I want to start a war on Xmas. This one would be to try and convince people that there is no sale that is so good that it’s worth killing someone or being killed for.
All these Xtian wing-nuts think that preserving our shopping is what Xmas is all about.
Pffft.
Digg It Pups!!
That is the truth.
Eureka!
Please do not shop at Walmart.
There were two more at Toys R Us as well.
I’ll dance to that!
Never have never would/will… Why should I give my good money to those bastards who refuse to allow Unions or to pay a living wage WITH benefits!
heh, cool vid.
I’m totally down with skipping the black friday thang too.
Dugg it and left a comment at Digg
All my years as a parent, I’ve tried to teach my children to not buy China, not shop Walmart, but please buy local or at least western.
only shopping I did today was to grab a couple of items I needed at the grocery store
I chose not to participate in the madness
Unfortunately, some people don’t have much choice. When a box of cereal costs $5-6 at any other store, WalMart has the same brand for $2.50. So you can afford two of them. If you are on a small fixed income making a decision not to shop there can be a real problem.
We need to figure out how to help support legislation that will allow more unions, and crack down on employer intimidation and crap when employees try to organize. So support the Union Check Off bill when it comes up.
ate my third thanksgiving dinner tonight, including a piece of pecan pie
This has your name all over it. *g*
Dr.Bone – I Came Here To Get Ripped
lol, w3rd.
These contemporary Christians are using the stateless model of the church to spread the gospel of consumption.
Not buying ‘China’. That’s getting really hard too.
I do alterations for high-end wedding dresses and other formal wear. ALL the dresses I have worked on except for one, are/were made in China. The one exception? Poland.
Menswear, otoh, mid-price range seems to be made here. Verrrry interesting.
We try but sometimes you just don’t have a choice when you need something as they are no longer made here! Not that I have any thing against the Chinese people!
It is just there Government that gets to me, and now those who would put poisons in food that infants and our pets have eaten and died..
ah yeah, nice!
Today I had one with a French label in it. I thought wow!
Oops! Made in China too.
Wow! I will have to pass this on. Poland?
Unions make Corporations toe the line and force them to pay decent wages. Of course the Chamber of Commerce3 and Republicans are always trying to destroy Unions especially after Ronnie RayGun started it in the eighties! And even if a Union is not in a company when unions are strong the Corporations pay more to non union workers!
Yes, and I can’t think of the designer right now – think veeerrrrry high end New York famous.
Vera Wang
the world is flat :P
I stop by Wal Mart about once a month for a dozen grocery items I can’t get anywhere else. If it’s available at my local grocery store… even if it’s a bit more expensive, I won’t buy it at Wal Mart.
I’ve also noticed a lot of things are equal or sometimes less expensive than Wally World.
Yup! I’ve been a big union advocate most of my life. Dad was a shop steward, hubby Teamsters member. I was a member of SEIU in another life for a while.
I know all the arguments and the bloody history of union organizing as well.
:þ
Yeah, I do that for some stuff – fixed income and all that. We have a local, organic store, The Good Food Store, and I try, but everything is so expensive. So I splurge teensy bits there, and buy all the organic stuff at Safeway for the rest of it. I also do some Costco stuff too.
I like the first one better *g*
lol :)
I don’t even try to buy organic produce… not on my budget. But I do buy organic milk. Tastes better and has a much longer shelf life.
I get quite a bit at Costco, and Safeway has organic stuff all throughout their store. Some of it is actually cheaper than the competitive non-organic name brands. And not just produce – canned, frozen, spices, and other things.
Costco has chicken, wild-caught salmon and other fish both fresh and frozen, and some produce too.
See that’s a big problem with our food supply right now. The best stuff for you is too expensive for most people to afford. Agribusiness gets all the subsidies and the small organic farmers don’t. Those subsidies are a problem because they also allow/encourage all the herbicide/pesticide use in farming. Stuff our body does NOT need!
I go to Walmart every couple of months for dry cat food *only*. Everyone else quit selling the specific version my guy eats. Not a battle I can win.
Always make it a point to stop and speak to the elderly employees. So many of them.
Well, it seems I am talking to myself so I’ll bid you all good nite (if there is anyone here)
nite loky
seems the turkey has after-effects, for me at least
Hi everybody.
Yeah, I always skip shopping on Black Friday. I can’t deal with crowds on any day of the year, but esp. this one. I’m not into competitive shopping.
About organic…is it real? I’m pretty cynical about food labeling. worth it? I’ll try the milk on ES’ say so.
nite
*flings some mash*
‘nite loky. I’m here, just quiet tonite.
I buy whole milk.. Suggest a little side by side taste test between regular cheapo and organic. It should be obvious to ya, immediately.
You!
you musta had a big crowd if you still have more spuds to fling! ugh!
I bought some organic heavy cream last winter. So thick the spoon stood up in it and yellow as butter.
even if it is not totally ‘organic’ farm fresh milk is so much better than that puss juice.
I know. I do the milk taste test while performing all the cookie haka stuff I learned earlier today. Really fun.
*deep pockets!*
:)
what’s the worst thanksgiving dish you ever had? My grandmother was very partial to the jello salad thing. and her favorite color was orange.
yes. grated carrots in orange jello. mmm mmm. good and good for ya. with a dash of mayo for garnish.
Devonshire?
tw3k, Been meaning to tell you I greatly admired your Branded Maverick. Talent, you’ve got it!
prolly some little debbie cake i had as a slob bachelor.
I honestly cannot think of a worst ever at the moment.
Probably some really dry dressing.
*blushes* aw, thanks!
Domestic. Brand was Happy Valley. Occasionally see their half and half, but never again the heavy cream.
tomato aspic
with fruit cocktail suspended in it
the 25 lb turkey my sister didn’t put into the oven until 4:30 pm
we ended up getting jack in the box for the kids on the way home – when we left the bird was still cooking…
g’nite all
nite suz
eewww, ok, i’ve never liked the aspic.
nite!
awwwg. blech.
that’s just nasty! totally trumps my jello and tw3k’s little debbie doorstop.
heh, jimmy cliff on tcm!
You’re not talking to no one.;)
LOL. see ya, Suz.
nite Suz…. Sleep well (:>))
I had never had aspic, looked a lot like ketchup jello. With fruit. We had to humor our hostess.
It was awful.
Suz’ note reminds me of another thing. we usually have some kind of plumbing disaster on a major holiday. this year it was a bug disaster…we had these flying things come out of nowhere just teeming out of the window sills. Totally grossed me out.
I roasted a turkey in a bag one year. It collapsed of its own weight on the platter. I might have done something wrong *g*
you had to humor your hostess? that means not a blood relative. am I right? Because if you shared DNA, you totally have the right to rein crap on the hostess for the rest of their life.
My mom was very proud of her aspic but i always thought of it as ketchup jello as well ;)
OTOH she makes a great summer chilled tomato soup!
oops. “rain crap”
I better watch my scatological phraseology…
ll, first store bought bird i ever cooked, i cooked it with giblet bag in it!
It was our first Thanksgiving in the South. I mean the real South – Northern Mississippi, about 50 miles south of Memphis.
And the hostess was none other than my mothers Grandmother. She was born when Andrew Johnson was President.
On the other hand, the turkey soup was early.
oh damn. culinary character test.
wow, good genes!
Did you hear a loud demonic voice screaming GET OUT?
-G
I don’t know about that… She drank no less than 12 bottles of Coke a day.
amazing. how old was she when she died?
104, 105 maybe
LOL! It really was like some stupid horror movie. First one bug, then two. “gee where are they coming from?” then a couple on our sandwiches (to tide us over until The Feast). that’s when we started screaming. then we see them covering the window sill and our eyes pop out, and my girls and I just starting screaming ourselves silly. Fortunately my Man gets off the phone with his dad to take care of it.
ugh ugh ugh. really bad cooties, dude.
Prior to that I had one smoked at a local bbq place and it was great, so I thought. My family, not so much.
how often did she eat the tomato aspic? :]
how often did you hafta eat it? just the once?
proof is in the pudding, i guess ;)
a
uspicious occasions. We’ve had tomato aspic since, and it was not bad. But this – this looked like I don’t know what. I hesitate to describe it beyond this: my sister, who took a lot of pre-med in college, later likened it to stomach contents.
ya mean like PUKE?
Unless there’s another entry, I believe newton is the winner. gak!
I’d like to thank the Academy…
hmmmm: gak
I guess you give thanks every year not to have to eat that stuff anymore!
Yeah, I officially award you the Worst Thanksgiving Dish Ever Award.
Turkey, oyster stuffing, asparagus casserole, yams with bourbon, fresh-made cranberry sauce suits me fine.
kissing off that piece of my working vocabulary.
No, I believe ‘gak’ is the appropriate expression. Perhaps we should petition the Urban Dictionary for relief.
More food for main stream media: MSNBC BREAKING NEWS: Mortar attack near UN compound in Baghdad kills 3 foreigners, wounds 14
mmmmmm. yummy.
on that delicious note, I’m signing off, pups. stay safe and shop online…….
nite!
We used to speculate about what our retreat would look like. I have a feeling it could be pretty rough… especially if we push the SOFA timeline.
nite dosido
Has everyone but me gotten and used twitter?
Tell me the big deal, please. I just got an email that someone is following me and I don’t know wtf that means.
I set up an account and decorated a page, sort of, but I don’t use it. I think it must be handy for folks with treos who are always on the go.
Oops. Turns out I have an account.
So I entered as an update
Did I do it right? :-)
Well, it’s pumpkin time.. and I don’t mean pie…)
G’nite firedogs
let me check
I don’t know what twitter is, and I don’t know what a treo is. People who do know have assured me that I do not need to know these things. And I have never sent, nor received a text message, nor would I know how to do either.
What am I missing out on?
nite eureka
twitter, when you want to find folks to follow, asks for your email address and password.
Sure. No problem. I’ll hand it right over.
Can I please tell you my Visa card PIN, too?
I see you.. and asked to follow you. Following allows folks to see your updates/posts. I noticed a lot of folks post alerts of new news or new blog posts. I should probably post LLN new videos like tonight, but I forget about it.
Anywhoooo, G’ nite
It only asked me for that kind of info when I set up my account. It never asks me that for any other purpose.
Has there been discussion at FDL about specifics in the leaked SOFA translation? If accurate, seemed mighty slippery re:contractors.
Yes, but do you realize that over the past 30 years the history of the Labor Movement has been removed from the curriculum of our schools.
There is a whole generation of Americans who have been taught to believe that Unions are bad for workers and for business. They have no idea that many of the things that they take for granted. The 8 hour day, the 40 hour week, health insurance and pension benefits, all these things came about because unions fought for them. We must begin teaching our children about labor and good government (another thing that has been removed from curricula) again.
And let’s not even mention the Department Of Labor. The Department Of Labor might as well be called the Department of Business because over the past decade it has done nothing but protect Corporations from unionization.
30 years of “me first”, since rayguns, has left us with a generation of people that have not a clue about the benefits and protections that unions provide. As for the Department of
Chamber of CommerceLabour it is a bloody joke and no more so since the bushies have been in DC.Good morning all.
Good morning, pups. It’s Blow and Herbert today. Mr. Blow gives us “Gay Marriage and a Moral Minority.” He presents an analysis of why blacks voted in favor of Proposition 8, and of how their vote possibly could be swayed next time around. Mr. Herbert, in “Putting a Face on Big Auto,” says “ripple effect” is too mild a term for the potentially devastating impact of a collapse among the Big Three automakers. Gail Collins is off today.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got waffles with Vermont maple syrup. We’re getting rain again today. We had a lovely slow rain yesterday, which is continuing today, and the forecast says we have a 100% chance of rain again tomorrow. YAY! Have a great day.
Shocked and awed that Walmart security so bad and American shoppers so bad that a NY walmart employee was trampled to death yesterday at store opening.
Omg
WallMart, offering a free shoe shine for every employee trampled.
WallMart, where the employee is also the welcome mat.
WallMart, the doors we sell are even cheaper than the one at the entrance.
WallMart, where trampling costs less…
Best piece on Wal-Mart and it’s effect on the world economy that I ever read:
