While I agree with Digby that early coverage by our media of the American-centric aspect of the Mumbai terror attacks was rather shameful, by now it looks like whoever planned and executed this terror attack aimed it at America — specifically, at Western media feeding Americans on holiday around our televisions on a long weekend with less shopping planned.
That’s fairly sophisticated and fairly scary too.
The hotels that were attacked were central to the American expat/tourism experience in Mumbai; most Western companies that are now firmly ensconced in that south Asian financial capital began their Indian incarnation in a small hotel suite in the Taj or the Oreboi. Some that haven’t yet built or leased their own office towers now occupy entire floors. And the Taj Palace and Towers was readying for an influx of Westerners, especially Americans, for Thanksgiving celebrations.
We’re told that Westerners — Brits and Americans — were singled out, and tragically some have been listed among the dead. That’s one way of extending the coverage in Western news media beyond the initial attacks: isolate and focus on specific victims with whom the American audience may, for better or worse, more easily identify.
I’m not saying this was an attack on America — simply that the strategy and tactics of the attack were aimed at stretching the coverage in the West to cater to a media starved by a vacuum created by the long no-news weekend. Taking hostages, killing hostages when commandos attempted a rescue, continuing shootouts with government forces when completely outnumbered — all these serve to stretch the terror, enable the cablefests to develop a storyline, font-up a graphic, and punch in some scary Garageband intro music. Americans can now see the Mumbai terror attacks every time we turn on the television.
It wasn’t simply a single terror attack — it is an ongoing effort to engage our media’s attention at a time they had very little else to talk about. Were our cable stations really going to air more mindless speculation about which hypoallergenic dog would be best for the Obama girls when there was blood spilled, Americans dead, and hostages still at risk?
Someone with knowledge of the American newsmedia landscape plotted, planned, timed, and executed this attack. While the faces of the young lawbreakers make them look like college students with long hair and backpacks, they were managed by somebody who knows the insatiable appetite of the American media — and that this appetite needed filling very badly over our Thanksgiving weekend.
Again, we’re not at the center of this terror. The horror-stricken people of Mumbai are. But we are a critical part of its masterminds’ very carefully selected audience.
UPDATE: Wolf Blitzer breathlessly reports "shots fired moments ago at the Taj Palace and Towers Hotel" (2:30 pacific time) while Barbara Starr speculates pointlessly about possible Pakistani involvement. Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani refuses to be baited by Blitzer, saying that "democratically elected governments don’t go to war against each other" and decrying "non-state actors who perpetrated this terror."
UPDATE II: Larry King now interviewing folks all over the globe via satellite: eyewitnesses to the Taj attack, neighbors who saw the commando raid where the Jewish center residents were discovered dead, and Deepak Chopra in the studio, who is again talking about stifling the weapons trade and the financial support for terror. But, as previously, when he gets too close to the truth for comfort, Larry King goes to a commercial.

Good post, Teddy.
Thanks, neuro!
Digg this post for Teddy!
Let’s show them, and not watch it. Let’s also get Chopra on for a conversation. Maybe he has a book he would like to talk about + this political analysis.
I think we know next to nothing about these incidents and it will be idle speculation until we do.
Didn’t CNN declare Mumbai (a.k.a bombay) ‘taken over.’
I declare CNN drunk!
Geez!! Who woulda thunk it!! Terrorists catering to the jabbering airheads on TV. I had a feeling something like that was only a matter of time. That is what happens when CNN doesn’t have enough crap to fill its air time. Ugh!!
Didn’t CNN declare Mumbai (a.k.a bombay) ‘taken over.’
I declare CNN drunk!
Considering they employ Wolf Blitzer and Lou Dobbs and they used to employ Glenn “Holy Joe Lieberman loves coming on my show” Beck, I think their problem is bigger than drunkenness.
This was a very sophisticated, well planned, and well executed attack by people who knew what they were doing. I suspect you are correct that they were looking to capture western media attention. The question remains as to exactly what their goals were or whether they actually had a unitary set of goals. Several knowledgeable observers have suggested the attacks may be the work of a coalition of both internal and external groups with overlapping, but distinct agendas
evening all.
Listening to the speculation about who could be behind this operation, “which was obviously conceived of and funded by” some terror group, it occurs to me that one man with some military experience could have handled the planning, and that AK’s and hand grenades are not too hard to come by. Nor are they terribly expensive, relatively speaking.
Was Beck Ousted? Could have been eons ago, but I had not heard.
Publicity is goal #1 for terrorists. The Q is WTF is their cause?
just a ‘tad’
Idle speculation, though, is exactly what feeds the newsmedia beast, and they’ve gone to town on it. Something tells me someone knew how our beast works, to supply it with this kind of feed this weekend.
I think the proper phrase would be ‘beck embraced his inner fuax.’
It is a sorry site, isn’t it :(
Bob in HI – way off topic. Can you remind me of Anita’s husband’s first name? Lost a lot of info in the last move and can’t pull it out of memory. (I used to be NZ Expat and went to grad school with your sister.)
Naturally, there was a scramble by the media early on to link it to AQ but have had difficulty doing so. Certainly a different M.O. used.
Hey Teddy well written and right on point! These bastards know our Corporate media well. How better to make more money than to have a spectacular story like these attacks.
By the way MSNBC says “BREAKING NEWS: India media quotes police as saying Taj hotel standoff is over”
Now CNN is rerunning their Heroes program!
Oh and I Dugg your Digg Neuro!
Exactly. There are currently too many potential players to make any intelligible judgments (which I note the experts on the news shows have been largely avoiding).
It’s common knowledge that if they launch an attack which is spectacular enough, the media coverage will snowball. Even without the comparatively slow holiday news cycle, something this sensational would quickly become a focal point.
Several of the experts have suggested it as a possibility, but do not seem to give that a high priority. The experts seem to be focusing on the many domestic Islamist groups (India is the second largest Muslim country in the world) or various Pakistan based groups. Most of these are independent groups focused on Kashmir and Punjab, but there are also groups affiliated with the Pakistani intelligence apparatus (which is not monolithic) and military.
My favorite idle speculation is that it is Indian nationalist party (forget the acronym). Several threads nicely woven together: 1. blame it on Pakis, hoping to severe ties between US & Pak; 2. Elicit anger & fear from USians; 3. Elicit sympathy from USians.
Sorry, I can’t help myself. Is there a Mod here? Alittle name calling in the Palin clothes thread. Yuk
The early efforts to link it to AQ are nothing more than a shameless attempt by the media to gin up the sensationalism by evoking Americans’ favorite monster in the closet.
Yes, but my point is that the continuing nature of their attack continued to feed the beast. An isolated attack, even one that killed so many people and injured hundreds, would quickly fade if Americans/Westerners were not among the victims and if the terror ended swiftly, as with suiciders. Going in guns-blazing, taking hostages, killing hostages, keeping entire floors of hotels as territory: all this made the story flow from news cycle to news cycle, at a time when there was also very little else bubbling up to take its place.
There does seem to be a sense among several of the experts that a desire to derail normalization between the two countries may be a factor. This is something that all of the whackjobs in the region can agree on (even though they would gladly slaughter one another).
the mods are working on it – thanks
Well, of course I had to go look. Somebody should wash that little troll’s mouth out with soap.
Dya think. See my 23. Nothing would derail raprochment than such an attack, especially forcing the US to take sides.
That is cetainly part of it, but some have cited the financing, training, and logistical support the attackers had. Al Qaeda is far from the only group who could provide that, but they could potentially be involved. Again the experts, as opposed to the media gasbags, seem to be downplaying it.
Just got off the phone with family and friends … Mumbai is breathing a sigh of relief after 3 tough days.
Now the tough cleanup begins, last rites, etc.
This was an intelligence failure on many fronts … the Indian Gov’t is incensed at Pakistan’s participation in this affair. There is a growing call for strikes against Pakistan, which could trigger an all out War.
Hey Suzanne, wazzup?
Thank you. Not my usual call.;)
Which is why I wonder whether, when the talking-head terror experts opine that this isn’t AQ’s M.O., if they’ve come up with a new M.O. for this locale and this weekend. Just because AQ hasn’t gone in guns blazing or taken hostages doesn’t mean they wouldn’t start now if it would earn them much media.
I guess my overall point is that many of the talking heads don’t know jack and aren’t being challenged on many of their pet assumptions.
There were interesting reports from people who saw the attackers landing, came in very easily.
Sadly, all of these theories have some backing … very little reason to trust politicians on all sides over there …
Actually mine is response to yours at 23 (stupid reply and refresh). Yeah. Several of the possible players in this attack have a vested interest in disrupting that process including the Punjabis, Kashmiris, and AQ (as well as elements of the Pakistani intelligence services).
… and they had better intel of these two Hotels than the Indian Army …
So, our conversation continues … *g*
So, the USian response “should” be moderate and low key. Wanna bet that will happen?
People around the world possess insight into the nuances of our culture. By comparison, a recent U.S. vice presidential candidate can’t name the three countries which comprise the continent she lives on. We should be very proud. Only an enormously successful people could afford the luxury of being so ignorant.
busy backstage taking care of the flame throwing troll
Deepak Chopra’s interview is getting a lot of play within the Indian community … we have to look at this in the context of worldwide terrorism and act accordingly.
Can’t wait to see the video on YT!
Righto. WW terrorism that the US has gone out of its way to foment.
all year long:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7vyBpspBJQ
Sadly, as does the debacle in Mumbai.
With Bush and the Neocon Rangers still in charge? Not a chance in hell.
One of the few prominent figure actually making sense, IMHO.
Oh, dear. When I was in high school I asked my dad why all of the world leaders were so warlike…the 70’s.
((( Teddy )))
This attack was aimed at the World … they’re saying that they can hit us anywhere, anytime and we are at their mercy. Their weapon is fear and they are very effective at using it.
Indians never bowed their head after centuries of rule by various conquerors and this will only make us stronger.
It’s simply not permitted to talk on the television machine about how our US oil addiction feeds the Saudi coffers, where some money leaks out to terrorists in other countries so the royal family can buy relative peace at home. Just not allowed.
At risk of overstating the obvious, it seems like most of our agreements with other countries either include or hinge upon arms deals.
Petro -
Is that where your family are, in Mumbai?
Some of them, yes … close friends have perished in both Hotels … terrorists opened fire randomly …
… and how willing the Governments are to allow Corporate America to plunder their countries …
Yep. Including nukes. Blastem!
((((((Petro))))))
I am so sorry to hear that. This has to be even harder for you than for most people. I do think that the random nature of the killings, despite reports that they were looking for Americans and British, suggests that westerners were not really being targeted per se (as at the Bali disco bombing).
Yes, but the new guy is gonna stop all that, right ?
I truly hope that Gore’s 10- year plan gets more impetus because of this.
There HAS to be a better way.
yeah, and which ten year plan is that?
Yeah. What is needed right now is calming intervention to stop the tension from escalating out of control. After all these are both nuclear armed countries who are strategically and economically important to a whole lot of people. Unfortunately, I cannot see the Bush administration doing anything to quench the fires. Hopefully the British can intervene before it gets too hot.
Of course, but what is the probabiliby that USianas will discover the obvious?
rodney king taught me to always look for video cameras when patrolling
Thanks, my fav nephew was going to the Taj that night but changed his mind at the last minute.
It was tough seeing the Taj burn like that.
No country deserves this, especially such a friendly and welcoming one like India.
I think this was directed at the World and also to cripple the Indian economy. The tourism season is just underway and tourists flood India in December.
julia upstairs
I’m calling it a night. Have a splendid weekend, all.
To Petrocelli, best wishes for the safety of your friends and family in Mumbai and deepest sympathy for those lost.
Petro, my sympathies for your losses.
Thank you all for your kind words … the only way to defeat tyranny is with Love.
That is my belief and Gandhiji defeated the tyranny of the British Empire with it.
Love conquers all !
Oh no. I am so sorry.
I fear more bad news as the bodies are recovered …
It is sad to see. India has made huge advances in the past 40 years, but there still remain big problems and far too many politicians and others who are more than willing to exploit them. I wish them and your family well. I have great hopes for India’s future. Right now it seems on the road to being the next Taiwan or Korea if they can avoid any costly and destructive conflicts.
Our thought and prayers are with you and yours. Namaste, my friend.
Yep, as we chatted about last night … many politicians and fanatics will use this for their own selfish gains and nothing much will be done unless the Indian public keeps the matter on the front burners.
This is a real obscenity. Words fail.
Walk in peace.
In this instance it seemed purely to anger Americans & Brits with Pakistanis and Israelis & Jews around the world with Muslims.
I’d say it was sponsored by a weapons manufacturer or perhaps several of them.
It’s the same kind of garbage which keeps Israel and Palestinians fighting and it’s the same kind of garbage which kept the Iraq and Iran war going for 8 years and it is the same kind of garbage which kept the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Cold war going for decades.
Who knows, it might even be some freelance contractor who specifically instigates hate and violence on behalf of some other interests.
This is the kind of garbage that everyone needs to fight if we’re ever to be able to live in peace.
Plenty of fingers pointing at Pakistan – though there are many many indigenous Muslims in India who are very tired of being treated as less than second-class citizens, and who are organized. The usual: cui bono? would Pakistan truly benefit from fomenting such bloodshed and unrest in India? A home-grown terrorist group would be India’s problem, not the impetus to start a war with Pakistan.
What’s not mentioned too often (if at all) is that there are state elections in India next week.
Remember the supposed ‘ETA’ bombings in Spain, the week before their elections a couple of years ago? Spanish authorities were quick to condemn what seemed the most convenient perpetrator, only for the electorate to tell them to go away.
I know it’s not completely analogous – but time for some calm consideration, not jumping into the firepit.
After our market craziness I have to ask:
Who owned those hotels and where their stocks are marketed do they have credit default swaps?
There seems to be a lot of situations where collecting on the credit default swap “insurance” has to be considered.
I remember one of the Bruce Willis Die Hard movies where “terrorists” take a building (the Nakatomi bldg) and they demand ransom, but their real reason isn’t ransom (that’s just to stall and keep the police busy) while they just simply rob the place. Is that what ‘terrorism’ has come to?
It also reminds me of an old joke about convicts using wheelbarrows to carry lots of dirt out of a prison. The guards would always search the dirt to be sure they weren’t hiding anything in there. But, the prisoners were really stealing the wheel barrows. They’d take ‘em out to dump the dirt and then not bringing them back.
Is terrorism just about giving people reasons to buy guns & explosives?
Is it just that simple?
Internally, those goals would be to influence the upcoming elections.
More than a few folks have hinted at this. And yes, it’s likely Hindu’s were a part of it all . . . I’ve read some of the attackers came ashore, others were already ON shore . . .
Here’s one line of info/theory from brendancalling:
http://www.moonofalabama.org/2……html#more
Here’s another view:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes…..latestnews
Newsweek interviews a terror expert with some really intense info:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/171113
Josh Marshall from TMP reports:
“Key details seemed to be that there were 40 attackers, half were there in place and in advance and half were brought in on speed boats from the sea. 29 were Pakistani, 11 were Bangladeshi.”
While I agree we don’t KNOW details as many sources from India have their OWN agenda’s to set, it seems likely that it was a combined force from on land with a group that landed by rubber boats by sea.
It also seems likely that the top 4-6 Indian Terror Professionals were drawn in to this, target, and killed. And THOSE terror professionals were investigating Indian/Hindu connections to previous terror acts in India, were in the middle of identifying a NEW witness, and had been threatened with death in the days before the attacks began.
Qui bono, Achems Razor and a whole host of viewpoints apply to this as they always apply to acts of horror.
Given what the USA has been thru, and put OTHERS thru in other countries, it doesn’t seem too far a stretch to think this WAS an inside/outside job.
And only time well tell for sure, if ever . . . it sure wouldn’t be the FIRST time on the planet that violence and horror were inflicted on civilians for other than ‘fanatical’ interests . . .
Some sources are saying they were NOT AK-47’s, but M6’s.
And given there’s a LOT of noise that these were attackers of varying countries, and the planning had prior knowledge of places, processes, and procedures (including what the response of the Indian Terror Swat Folks would be), it seems there was a lot of prep time, months or more, to plan this.
Could only one person do it? Not if it DID include both Hindu and Islamic participants . . . these folks had inside knowledge of how the hotels are laid out, and likely had inside people helping them all along the way.
This was a cold, calculated plan to wreak havoc. And it eliminated the 4-6 key people in a government investigation and trial that was targeting on inside Hindu sources for previous terror acts. And it got publicity galore, as has been pointed out, in a slow news cycle.
And the main Indian spin has been to put Islamic Fundies, of one group or another, as the culprit. Fundie’s from Pakistan. All the while an election is coming up and competing factions are HEAVILY at odds with each other to win.
There are a lot of others out there who would agree with your idle speculation. I’m one of them . . .
I’ve read enough to be real suspicious of anything the MSM here, or in India, is reporting. There’s too much revealed by other sources about past issues, and present issues. I put some links in my reply to Dr. Dick. There are so many more to be added, but I don’t keep them, I read and move one.
Of the dead, and hundres of hundreds wounded, very few were American’s or Brits. So, that don’t suit any posits they WERE out for USA/England only, despite the ‘onsite witness reports’.
Who knows, maybe there just were not that may Americans at the ten sites attacked . . . and why attack two hospitals to get at Americans and Brits? That don’t read right . . . so another hole in many of the theories.
This attack seemed to be shock and awe and blood. Not so much American/Brit directed . . .
The hostages they took were likely killed for the most part, it seems, either early on or when the attackers came under siege. That more are not reported dead at this point is a surprise to me, given all that was done. My guess is bodies are being really under reported.
I have ONE question I’ve not seen put forth anywhere:
How many of the dead civilians were the result of the Indian Swat, Army and Police actions?
I read of scores of commando’s pouring round after round into hotels, the Jewish Center and such when they mounted counter attacks . . . how many civilians did those rounds kill?
Anyway I look at this, let me state, I’m horrified and sickened. No matter who was at the heart of it all . . . India has not done well in it’s history since Pakistan was let go in ‘47 (or was it ‘46?), to quell terror acts, though. I can only hope for its people, they do better going forward.
I read somewhere the past few days, India is 3 billion strong.
80% Hindu.
14% Muslim.
Forget where the Sikhs fit in.
And that India is either the first largest, or second largest, Muslim population in the world . . (Indonesia being the other).
I guess, 14% of 3 billion is a lot of people.
But I don’t think it’s only the Muslims of Kashmir, or elsewhere, who contribute to the problems India faces.
In a RIGIDLY caste society, the poor overwhelmingly dominate it all . . . and only power and a firm fist can keep that many poor from rising up, be they Hindi, Muslim or Sikh. It’s an epic story that has much to play out I think before it’s solved.
Here’s hoping we solve our OWN growing disparities before we fall the the same level (some would say we already have, I’m a bit more hopeful we can still save USA and a middle class).
Thanks to all for all the info and comments . . and to Teddy P for the thread.
My deepest condolances . . .
One thing that I’m surprised hasn’t been raised is that Ayman al-Zawahiri has, in fact, planned something very much like this type of attack before. The Luxor Massacre in November 1997, was a coordinated attack on tourists at a major national tourist site intended to bring down the government by targeting NON-CITIZENS of that state.
Similar types of weaponry were used, and it was a coordinated operation between two, or more, different groups with somewhat different aims.
BTW The attack was undertaken for what might appear to be the most contrary of rationales. It was INTENDED to spur a reaction of forcible response and oppression by the Egyptian government. This was because there had been a deal brokered by some in the Islamist faction with the Government to operate within a political space in exchange for renunciations of violence. In exchange there would be a limited amnesty for those who renounced violence and assisted in turning in those who continued acts of terror.
Zawahiri saw this as a highly dangerous situation and saw a single, highly visible act against foreign tourists as the way to get the Mubarek regime to withdraw their support…they’d be forced to crack down.
Much the same thing is occurring now in India. The BJP and other nationalists are screaming for Pakistani blood…at the very time that the two governments are reaching closer to resolving several long standing issues. But if Pakistan is faced with sanctions or military threats this only strengthens the hand of the fundamentalist parties in that nation, weakens the moderates and modernists who currently control the government (although they are of separate parties). It would be the religious parties and the military who “win” if India and Pakistan go back to a war footing.
LaRue…you make some good points. I understood that the US/Brits were being selected for HOSTAGES. That would be a trump card and drag out the opportunity to receive media exposure. If they had taken Indian hostages the government may have been less tentative in sending in the military.
The terrorists did not seem so concerned about killing Indians. You make a good point about the attacks in the hospitals. No Westerners there. Perhaps they wanted to disrupt the caregiving facilities…sort of like using a second bomb when the police and ambulances come to help victims of a first attack. Plus people in the hospital are often non-ambulatory and sitting ducks.
They were not targeting in a precise way high officials. This was largely an attack designed to cause maximum carnage, but also international attention. That’s why they went after major centers in the center of “Bollywood” – where Indian elites and others were likely to be.
Since Reagan/Bush Sr. were into arming & financing the mujahideen, my current assumption is they’re behind the financing & arming of this new group, the Deccan mujahideen. Hey, since his son has allowed the pilfering of TRILLIONS from American taxpayer money, the Bush Cartel has plenty of money now to put death squads on the payroll again. Spit.
Before Clinton came on in 1992, there were lots of these kinds of attacks on Americans around the world and out of nowhere came the 1993 WTC by a group called al-Qaida that no one had ever heard of (Bush sr., the bin Ladens, and the Saudi royals were already in business together at this time), so it seems to me history is repeating itself again.
My guess is the next 9/11 will be nuclear and the nukes will have come from our own arsenal and perpetrated & conspired by neocons in our government currently.
Just saying…
I’m sure we’ll learn more in the coming days, but I don’t think this analysis will stand up over time. Newsweek’s Fareed Zakaria did some q&a with Newsweeks managing editor on Wednesday (early in the siege, I know) and he says there were better targets if they wanted to kill Westerners (or merely grab the attention of the Western media, as Mr. Partridge says). He also points out that Indian Muslims have been left behind in India’s economic boom over the past decade, which has alienated many. I was hoping Zakaria would do an update, but as of Saturday morning, I haven’t seen one. Here’s the link if you want to check out what he said Wednesday. http://www.newsweek.com/id/171006
i often agree with what you have to say but this time you are dead wrong – no hindu nationalist would ever launch such a destructive assault on the the Taj in Mumbai bc it has an iconic status in that it was built by jhk Tata in 1903 when he was denied entry to the Walton Hotel bc he was a ‘native’ when the Brits were still there – in other words, it is a monument that says f*** u to colonial racism.
my second cousin was a victim – he was a grand chef at the Taj – so the feelings in my family are very mixed – there is a lot of anger and grief but also fear that it would get the BJP back – my family is very intermixed and secular although born into hinduism but that is an atheistic religion (i don’t want to to argue this here but i think i know i know what i am saying)
Sona – this is terrible for your family and very frightening for the future.
thank you Toby – i’m still coming to terms with it all and my daughters, half english on their father’s side, are very upset – they were in Mumbai last december and loved the place and know the Taj and the Leopold well – the latter did the best bhelpuri in the world
