there is a plant nursery in the Kansas City area that has various attractions in addition to the plants it sells. one of them is a pig who was raised in town as a dog, with “other” dogs, until he got too big. he “shakes” on command and performs various other tricks typically associated with dogs. since meeting him, my wife has totally sworn off pork products and does not even want them in the house.

i use the quaker oats recipe on the carton – its the one my mom used and how i learned to make meatloaf when i was a young teen. still the best recipe i have found for the stuff (imho)

i’ve not made a turkey in several years – hard to do turkey day for just me. i think i fixed turkey day dinner my first year up at the cabin and realized i had enough leftovers to last me 5 or 6 months.

I’ll have to check the Quaker box. I learned to use nothing more than salt & pepper, saltine cracker crumbs, and egg. Now I sometimes go absolutely wild and use BBQ sauce on top! I know, I know…CRAZY!

iirc, the smallest turkey i could find was 12 or 13 lbs – that’s a lotta turkey leftovers. enough to put me off turkey for a while. of course, the 3 pies i made didn’t last as long as the bloody bird did

If memory serves, FDA issued regs specifying maximum “acceptable levels” of melamine in food within the last couple of weeks. Knew this was coming?

Don’t have a link, but seems it was based on some contorted finding, like at these levels it wasn’t known to cause harm. Seems the burden of proof for adulteration has shifted.

No holiday plans here to speak of — my work schedule precluded me from traveling to Richmond this time around, so I’ll be at home and probably having something inappropriate like spaghetti or something ;-)

But it’s all good, I needed these days off because I’m preparing for the arrival of my friend from the UK, staying with me for a week.

I think we just need to start assuming that our food, water and air are being poisoned… um, but… we don’t have adequate healthcare either. um, well, at least we can adjust the actuarial tables. The Fairness Doctrine, which forced broadcasters to offer equal time to both sides of controversial issues, was abolished in 1987, paving the way for talk radio to take the opinionated — and popular — form it has today.

Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and such influential Democratic senators as Barbara Boxer and Chuck Schumer are pushing for its return, or something like it. […}

Obama has called on Henry Rivera, who was a commissioner in the 1980s when the Fairness Doctrine existed, to oversee the FCC transition process. Rivera is a supporter of bringing back the provisions. And heading Obama’s overall transition team is John Podesta, head of liberal think tank the Center for American Progress. Last year, the CAP issued a report called “The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio.”

While the CAP stopped short of advocating a return of the Fairness Doctrine, it did support more stringent adherence to so-called localism, which critics consider a back door to requiring that stations ditch some of their conservative hosts.

Hey, CT! I’m not really interested in hearing Rachel on the same program as Hannity, so I guess I don’t get the whole fairness doctrine concept. But, I’ve often been so offended by the lies that Limbaugh and Hannity espouse, and that people take as truth. It’s not right. There is too huge a stupid audience…it’s too dangerous. I heard a caller to Rush yesterday, a UAW retiree, trying to explain that he had earned his pension and that it was in jeapardy. Rush told him that it was his fault for not having saved enough money while working. Why do these people keep on listening and believing? A Rise in Kidney Stones Is Seen in U.S. Children

To the great surprise of parents, kidney stones, once considered a disorder of middle age, are now showing up in children as young as 5 or 6.
While there are no reliable data on the number of cases, pediatric urologists and nephrologists across the country say they are seeing a steep rise in young patients. Some hospitals have opened pediatric kidney stone clinics.

“The older doctors would say in the ’70s and ’80s, they’d see a kid with a stone once every few months,” said Dr. Caleb P. Nelson, a urology instructor at Harvard Medical School who is co-director of the new kidney stone center at Children’s Hospital Boston. “Now we see kids once a week or less.”

Dr. John C. Pope IV, an associate professor of urologic surgery and pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, said, “When we tell parents, most say they’ve never heard of a kid with a kidney stone and think something is terribly wrong with their child.”

In China recently, many children who drank milk tainted with melamine — a toxic chemical illegally added to watered-down milk to inflate the protein count — developed kidney stones.

The increase in the United States is attributed to a host of factors, including a food additive that is both legal and ubiquitous: salt.

and somebody criticized me for saying it. And maybe you will right now, Bob, but there are occasions where this president has shown the glitter of nobility.

He‘s done just the right thing at just the right time and right opportunity. He picked a superb nominee for Supreme Court chief justice. I mean, you didn‘t hear from the accolades from the Democratic left because a lot of them are running for president and they have to be pro-choice and all that, but what a splendid appointment.

And then he picks this guy for Federal Reserve chairman the other day

He was the best man for the job, the best person. This president is capable of grand, grand gestures and grand moments.
