The stock market slouches in the corner, sulking like a petulant tween who’s just been denied Jonas Brothers concert tickets. Older workers and senior citizens listen helplessly to the death rattles of their retirement savings while Bush goofs off in a Peruvian poncho down in Lima. Unemployment is skyrocketing; foreclosures are at record highs. Not even inaugurated yet, Barack Obama is already trying to wrestle the economy back into shape. So what does ABC News do to make us feel better?
Features a slideshow of a 2009 calendar featuring "beautiful" conservative women in ludicrously expensive fur coats, courtesy of the Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute. Way to go, ABC and CBLPI! We’re on the verge of another Great Depression, and you glamorize the highly-paid cheerleaders who got us into this mess (and piss off the anti-fur lobbies as a bonus). Insensitive much?
What’s the matter, guys – are you saving the "Caged Meat: CEO’s Behind Bars" calendar for next month?
P.S. One more indignity: Why wasn’t K-Lo included in the line-up?
[Ironically, a story on winter coat drives appears on ABC's "Good Morning America" page.]

I gave the 2008 version of this calendar, which had nothing to do with fur, to TRex for Christmas.
How many fur coats does Cindy McCain have? For Sarah Palin, coats, rugs, wall hangings, vests, boots, underware?
K-Lo wasn’t included because there ain’t enough mink in the world.
watertiger!
The Republicans really have become the party of Marie Antoinette.
oh, Teddy, no you diiiiin’t!
Full disclosure: I own a mink coat.
Well, ABC still hasn’t fixed its idiotic caption:
I see twolf was inspired by the actual caption on photo #7.
(Or should I say “tormented by”?)
Who cares about fur coats? Is this PETA now?
I think that they were afraid that Sarah Palin would shoot her.
Full disclosure: my grandfather was a furrier (helped organize the St. Louis furriers’ union).
Not me. See my 7.
I think the point is that conspicuous consumption dies hard when the economy goes into depression. I wish we had some blogs from 1929 to trace the timeline back then. I’ll bet the rich were even more recalcitrant.
I like LOLcats better.
It would really be too bad if that caption is taken from the actual printed calendar, and not just a little mistake over at ABC.
Digg it
Oh! “recalcitrant” is one of my favorite words!
wow, didn’t think i was that unclear about it.
it’s the ostentatious displays of wealth.
Not me, see mine at 12.
you mean, how many for each house?
My grandfather had to get work as a lineman in South Dakota for a while in the 30s.
At first, I thought your complaint was about all the fugly women in the calendar, but then I realized that wouldn’t be very politic for a foul-mouthed femblog.
What? No Palin? Oh right, she “claimed” that she never wore fur. “I put animals on my wall, I don’t wear them…”
Sarah and the Valkyries
Neanderthals were always big into fur, even when their world was on the verge of collapse and they faced extinction.
it’s really too easy a target. ;-)
My mink is too warm for NYC. Can’t even think of wearing it unless the outside temp is below 32. But it’s really cozy in really cold temps.
However, I own a mink coat strictly for emotional reasons. I worked at Goldman, Sachs from 1976-1986. Did not get the promotions that I should have owing to gender discrimination. (YMMV) I looked for other jobs. My late husband promised me a mink coat when I left GS. As he was a remarkably stingy man, that really meant something. One day I came home in dismay, telling him that I had blasted my big mouth and feared that I’d get fired. His response: the mink coat does not depend on how you leave, just that you leave.
I left soon thereafter & he bought me the coat. It wore out in about 15 years. As I was still emotionally attached to it, I replaced it. Won’t bother when this one wears out.
Well, frankly, they didn’t have many options, unlike modern Rethuglicans. No Gore-Tex in the paleolithic
I didn’t think so either, but felt obliged to make it clear wrt the PETA charge.
Full disclosure: a lot of my ancestors were furry.
Heh. I have only one mink coat for 2 houses. Don’t have the Cindy inventory though.
[shrugs]
Speaking of furs and people who didn’t realize what was coming (except perhaps the guy on the front left).
Here’s a great walk down Memory Lane
A Norman Rockwell one month after the 1929 Stock Market Crash
Go back far enough and all of our ancestors came with built in fur coats. Kind of warm in tropical Africa IMHO.
Nowadays we’re just fuzzy.
was one of those guys george w. bush’s grandfather?
Thanks for some evidence to my query at 13. As I expected.
Depends on how much waxing.
They did love their Boas…
I like your title, double-you-tee.
Were there others you considered?
Whoa, that’s a great image.
directly on point.
At first I was going to say “Yes. This has been another edition . . .” but then I looked a bit further.
It appears that the folks at CBLPI just like living in the past:
Glamorous movie stars of classic Hollywood might be rolling over in their graves at this news.
You are a troublemaker. ;-)
Some suggested titles: “Fur Elites,” “Fur Right,” and “I Can’t Belief How F**king Tone Deaf These People Are”.
For a couple of guys I knew in Chicago that would qualify as major surgery.
A painful exercise in futility. Reminds me a little of compulsive house cleaners. Sooner or later they all end up in a hole with dirt thrown in their face.
But watertiger, they’re REPIGLICANS! They’re ALLOWED to lord their wealth over the rest of us.
Must . . . not . . . make . . . Lou Costello . . . reference. . . .
*might*????
Fur-get me not.
Hot conservative women and ugly minds! Rich Lowry get your copy. So sexy! They did not include Sarah Palin in a turkey outfit. But who could forget Michelle Malkin cheerleading against the Defeatocrats. She gets credit for predicting victory. Where is that other beauty Oh Dana Perino who has declared victory in Irak.
Fur from the Madding Crowd.
or matted crowd, as the case may be
If I ever get rich, I won’t be like that. As long as I’ve got my solid gold house and my rocket-car, I’ll be happy.
Gonna tell only one story. Place where I get manicure/pedicure by Koreans in midtown Manhattan. Recently a guy came in (rare event) and went into the waxing cubicle. Sounds eminating made me want to flee asap.
Kick out the furriners? No, that’s “Minutemen in Mink.”
Beyond the cost of fur, buying it is supporting sick people doing sick things to animals (according to PETA):
“Millions of fur-bearing animals including foxes, raccoons, minks, coyotes, bobcats, lynxes, opossums, nutria, beavers, muskrats, otters, and others are killed each year on fur farms by anal and vaginal electrocution and in the wild by drowning, trapping, or beating.”

There’s only one way to tell. Someone will have to write another sad, plaintive little letter saying how much he supports the laudable goals of the Claire Booth Luce Womens Subjugation League, but because he’s on such a limited fixed income is unable to donate this year, and ask whether the League would be prepared to send a calendar along without the recommended donation.
It worked last year.
Colbert riffing on Lieberman. Does he have a mink coat?
These guys would have needed general anesthetic. They had more hair on their backs than I have on my legs.
Trouble is, people usually want it all off instead of being creative. Zebra stripes would be SO cool.
Well, cancel that. My late husband had just the right amount of chest fur for laying your head in.
uh calgeorge – we are not the ones who dreamed up this – it was the conservatives who championed the glamorous days
of fur wearing hollywood… not us progressives …
Isn’t that what razors are for? Speaking of which, I noticed that the TV ads for Xmas razors started around mid-Oct.
Hi cinnamonape
For some reason the irony of that reminded me of this photo by Margaret Bourke-White
http://www.masters-of-photogra….._full.html
the rachel maddow show on msnbc has an ad every night for some device that seems to rub the hair off.
wolf fur from Alaska will be the next rage in republican circles 10 or more dead already Thanks Sarah thanks George
Like this?
They started the War on Christmas early this year. Funny how the celebration of the birth of someone who advocated rejecting wealth and materialism has become a major celebration materialistic indulgence.
It wasn’t so long ago that humans did that to humans, and it’s not clear that lethal injection is more “humane.”
When I worked in a cytogentics lab, we killed mice by plopping them into beakers, dousing them with ether, and putting a block over the top.
There’s a reason why humans are at the top of the food chain. Dya think lower meat eating animals are more humane to their prey? And what makes you think plants don’t have feelings?
Upon being told that Clare Boothe Luce was “kind to her inferiors”, Dorothy Parker had this to say: “And where does she find them?”
Exactly like that, actually.
I have a mink thong
;~P
If we are going to have a Great Depression Encore Part II End of Money for Losers Disaster Sequel, we might as well revive some 30s glamor. The most notorious first two actually looked pretty OK, but an airbrush and very careful, indeed, scientifically designed, lighting can do wonders. And filters, and who knows whatever they did to get them looking decent…
But, we seemed to have skipped over the naughty liberal flappers era completely. What did we have? Hillary?? Florescent pantsuits??? Certain age bulge?
That ain’t right.
There is enough time, you know. The financial panic is not even over. I saw we get some liberal flappers, party sex, high brow hard likker, and blow in real quick, before we do Depression era glamor.
Xmas is one of the few things I hate. Because I despise receiving & giving gifts. I got enuf stuff. So does everyone I know. As an aside, I’m irreligious. Doesn’t contribute to not liking religious holidays. Just the commecialization of it.
*hitting brain bleach button*
My favorite Dorothy Parker: If all the girls at Vassar we laid end-to-end, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised. Actually, I’m jealous that she chose Vassar instead of Wellesley.
Dorothy Parker.
The Queen of Snark.
“were” not “we”
A couple of interesting points….the Great Lakes fur trade was kept alive during the Depression through a number of Federally supported projects instituted by FDR.
Clare Booth Luce wrote her famous play “The Women” about effete upper class women obsessed with their social lives in the midst of the Depression. When it was made into a movie it allowed the poor a chance to gawk at how “the other people lived”.
The wealthy were asked to do their bit for the War effort…since they were actually some of the only people to be able to help out. Some gave up their “surplus” furs. I’m sure the Coulters, Malkins, and others in the calendar likely did nothing to help out in the war they ballyhooed. Remember that charitable organization for Iraqi Reconstruction Projects that Bush actually went on the air to promote. It got only about $20,000 in contributions before they shut it down. The group that built the website got more in the Federal grant to make the site than was donated.

Calender girl “Nonie Darwish is an Egyptian-born former -Muslim who renounced jihad for America”
Islamophobia much? Where do they get this shit?
Every see the sci-fi movie They Live? A down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is. When he looks at currency, he sees that it is actually just paper with the words “This Is Your God,” printed on it.
In that context, making Christmas a celebration of crass commercialism would be quite appropriate.
Mink thong. Yeah. Do that sort of thing before the 30s stuff. That’s kind of flapper. I don’t want to see it, but would be good to know that it is there.
You appear to be wearing it backwards…
True. Most so-called Christians actually worship Mammon.
America = good
Muslim = jihad = BAD
OK, where did I put the brain bleach….
Why wasn’t that OReilly pic in the calendar? He/she/it looks OK. Exotic and wild. Is he where the mink thong comes in?
“Fur Whom The Bell Tolls”
furry felafel?
In this case, I think it should be “Fur Whom The Bell Trolls”.
Fuzzy goes in the front?
Ever seen a furry falafel?
Whatever curls your curd.
Suz haz it… aisle 73
Industrial strength
Lord spare us. Furry felafel? Man, that could mean a half a dozen things, none of them good. A real furry felafel in the back of the fridge is the best of any of them I can think of, and that makes me want to gag.
About Billo in the calendar, sratch that. I changed my mind. My bad. Sorry.
whatever ya do, do not take it into the shower
According to Billo, it’s the stuff dreams are made of.
Good thinking. If it didn’t have hair going in, it would coming out.
Yes, but most of us REALLY don’t want to know too much about Billo’s dreams.
?
Opinion Journal is one place. World Net Daily. NewsMax. And of course the wingnut blogs.
I can’t understand why they think an American who revels in hatred of any foreigners is somehow accomplishing something, much less morally OK.
Fixed it for you.
grazi
billo – harrassing sex calls to his employee wherein he mistook a flafal for a loofah in his unreasonable demands for his employee to ah uh mmm pleasure herself with while in the shower
I’m just glad he doesn’t have my number.
Because they are rabid, nativist Know Nothings.
I think that goes for just about everyone whose phone number he does not have.
Or “Fur Whom the Belle Trolls” ;-)
uh, yeah.
Mrs Bong beckons.
Nite y’all
He shoots …..He Scores!
I’m out, have a splendid evening all. Think I’ll have to wring out my brain and hang it over the clothesline before I turn in.
Aloha,Dr Bong and ratfood!
Gray matter is difficult to reposition in the cranial cavity, once removed.

Do they have to be so gleefully rabid?
FRom Huff Po: 23/6 presents: The 2009 Reaction Calendar to “Pretty in Mink”
An appropriate reaction to the calendar.
Jeebus. That picture up top is simply hideous.
just be glad it is photoshopped – too bad the entire forking calendar wasn’t treated similarly
I’m surprised at the shellacking the Ain’ts handed the Pack…
Good Gawd! Not Coultergeist and Malkkkin…! I think I’m gonna be sick…
I really must find that letter I wrote last year to the Loose Ladies that liberated a calendar from them….
My God, man, have you not looked at the calendar? It’s like a dating site from the Dark Side
why on earth would ya want this years? egad, teddy, you would probably end up blind when ya unwrapped it
That was my first(and last) glimpse of it, Teddy! I lead a sheltered life…! ;-)
I have a dear friend in Oregon I’d like to send it to as a gift….
evil – no wonder we get along
late late nite upstairs
He’d look better with some collagen injections for those too-thin lips. Nice shade of lipstick, though.
Appropriate commentary to most of those in the 2009 “New Depression” Conservative “Guess We Are The Elites, After All” Calendar.
“When Dorothy Parker and Clare Boothe Luce were entering a room, Clare hung back, saying, “Age before beauty”; Dorothy entered saying “Pearls before swine.”
Another Dorothy Parker
“If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.”
Ugh. Jesus! That’ll put the wrinkles back in.
I’m just trying to think of an equivalent to the “giving up jihad for America” quote. It’s like promoting the beauty of a Jewish convert to Christianity by saying she chose Rapture over Jesus killers. I mean…it’s offensive and disgusting and I know that’s the point.
Maybe I’m just extra sensitive after this years campaign.
Imagine the howls of “elitism!!!” should leading male voices on the left pose wearing top hats and monocles, and you will have understood 10% of how incredibly stupid, tone-deaf, and, yes, elitist these pictures are.
And how does Michelle Malkin feel about “affirmative action” getting her into that calendar?
