Dugg It!!
how’s everyone doing tonight? i know some pups are traveling this weekend – headed out to see family far away for the holiday – others are gearing up for the family headed their way – and yet others are planning a solo meal.
me, i’m headed 45 min away on turkey day to spend the day with the bride and groom and the groom’s family.
We will have a small family gathering at my house
Glad we don’t have to travel
my sister and her husband (arizona) are headed to my mom’s (palm springs) as is my brother. but since i have not seen the bride since moving up here (funny how life interrupts plans), i’m looking forward to seeing her.
We’re having a Thanksgiving dinner at work on Monday; I eschewed the travel this coming week for a variety of reasons. I’ll travel at Christmas, when it’ll be easier due to my work schedule.
Suz, that will be a nice day for you and the bride and groom and assorted others :-)
ll, my former pd’s dispatch center used to have the best spread on holidays – way better than what the hosers put on at their respective firehouses.
of course, we in patrol considered it our solemn duty to visit every firehouse in our zones. it was amazing how many officers brought food for the dispatch feast. of course, we knew it was in our best interests to keep the persons who tell us where to go happy.
i hear my 47 year old brother is bringing his 23 year old girlfriend down to mom’s.
Suz, you know the dispatch centers always put on the good feasties *g* If you were in the area, I’d invite you to stop on by. We know how to put out a spread!
How ironic…An odd duck protecting a turkey from a swine. That metaphor really travels.
;>)
hey db – the yams made me to do
Sister-in law is cooking this year 5 min away… I don’t even have to cook anything… Now that does seem strange to me>>
Hi db :-) I know you’re on hiatus at the moment, but I just turned a friend on to your site.
db!
Hey, S. – How’s Yanksgiving going?
;>)
haven’t watched the toon yet. for a second there I thought you were talking about Palin, and the turkey farm, and…McCain?
aren’t you going to sneak a little chili onto the Thanksgiving feast table?
i’m not – no cooking but on the down side, no leftovers.
Well, I certainly hope that doesn’t affect the relationship, LL.
;>)
Hi, Neuro!
db, little chance of that — I showed him the pic of what I call Che Obama, and he was hooked!
how’s life in the nonblogging world db? treating ya good?
Another soul claimed by godless socialism.
Collect the set
;>)
Drive. Work. Eat. Sleep…Repeat.
;>)
heh ;-) That Obama pic, replete with the flag and pot leaves and flag pin, is my wallpaper at the moment. Priceless.
‘Pot leaves’? Gasp! Strictly medicinal, of course.
;>)
i remember those days – and how upset folks get when ya get that outta order.
Gravy, or no Gravy households? Here, in Ohio, I find most are not. Is this so totally wrong (being from Chads Ford/Wilmington DE), help me.. friends.
of course!
gravy here, no question about it
Nope I get to be lazy!
gotta have gravy for the smashed potatoes and for the biscuits to sop up
I put it on the bird and the dressing, too!
Invited to non, and made in advance.
Suz, I liked the toon. Reminded me of Popeye the Sailor Man…I yam what I yam
Yes, such sticklers for protocol, S.
;>)
voting for gravy here too, although nobody made gravy like my Grandma T. We miss her for that, and of course for many other reasons as well :-)
I find it usually works out OK as long as you don’t try to Sleep and Drive at the same time
Boy, you are surely fast…
’round my house, it aint gravy unless it has giblets in it.
GRAVY without it it’s not Thanksgiving!! Oh and Cranberry Sauce, jellied of course! Gravy, bread, (toasted) turkey and cranberry sauce. With a bit of the stuffing on the side!!
yams. don’t forget the yams.
Well, it worked for Reagan.
;>)
Absoputley must have giblets in it..cept the heart…I get that!!
Buddy Ron
with or without marshmallows?
OK OK yams are on the menu!
optional, as far as I’m concerned
either way is fine
Heart, liver, gizzard here. Usually not enough innards for giblets.
And I like to have a few sweet pickles and black olives on the side
some see a saint, other a person burning in hell – sometimes i think it is a worse sentence to have one foot in each
All this talk about food has me looking forward to work, and our feast, on Monday :-)
Gotta get to bed so I can bake some more later. G’night all!
now, as for pie…
I’ve already discussed my firm belief that they must include pecan
my former next door neighbor, token’s sister’s person, has crab every year for turkey day. my last one was at her table – she is a great forking cook.
g’nite ll
And cranberries…
pumpkin, pecan, and apple. or cherry but definitely a fruit pie.
never tried crab for Thanksgiving
sounds interesting though
living next door to her for 5 years, it became expected :) and one knew that after turkey day crab, she made gumbo.
For me, it’s too easy to demonize or evangelize, so I merely think him one of History’s actors…Pitchman-In-Chief.
Nixon’s looking pretty good right now, in hindsight.
;>)
tis a sad state of affairs when we look back on nixon with almost fond memories – knowing he got caught and paid a price helps
No gravy?
Serious??
Heathens I tell ya!
Apple made with Granny Smiths and MacIntosh! Precooked apples with some Orange juice for the tang…of course Sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg! And on the crust brush with milk and spread some of the sugar mix on top… Served with Vanilla ice cream of course!
That was the crime…Getting caught.
;>)
Cheney Guevera, my favorite radical.
-G
And he’s a free one, too.
;>)
Hi Suz how’s it going?
I certainly am no defender of Nixon. I do, however, believe that twisted though he was, he did care about his country.
I don’t believe GWBush cares about anything except himself and his cronies.
exactly db – the ultimate in bad gop behavior
nixon knew he did wrong, and did the right thing, he resigned. last week, tds had david frost on and they were talking about the nixon interview. brought back a lot of memories.
hey bbugs – doing ok – you?
I don’t think GW has a concept of right or wrong.
He’s a sociopath.
now, I think I want to go back to talking about food.
he’s something for sure but then again, that whole forking family is uh ummm unusual.
I don’t believe GWBush cares about anything except himself and his cronies.
58 days my friend, 58 days.
I check that every day to help me get by.
speaking of turkey and dressing and gravy and yams and cranberries and whole wheat rolls and butter, I think I enjoy the second plate–the one I eat at about 9 p.m.–almost as much as the first.
he eats hot dogs every day for lunch in the white house.
how was that for swinging it back around to food?
that’s what you will be missing, nahant!
well, nixon, I’ve heard, liked cottage cheese and ketchup…
I like the spiral cut ham way more than turkey and I loves the leftover ham,
Ham and scrambled, ham sandwiches, beans and ham or just plain ham right off the plate in the fridge.
IMHO gravy is one of the best parts of Thanksgiving dinner, it goes great on everything. I make homemade turkey stock the day before to make sure I have plenty, even for leftovers.
that does sound good
I’m from a turkey family
yep. gotta have enough.
but turkey day is turkey – back when i was still in active mom role, i used to make a turkey and a ham for christmas. great forking leftovers :)
I’m staying put again this year for Thanksgiving. We’re not doing much at my family’s place across the state. We tend to celebrate the Canuck October date for it more often anyway.
I’ll definitely be going there for christmas though. I think all i have to worry about thursday is what i want to eat. Go out or cook myself up something. Not sure if i can crash at a friend’s get together either at this point. They know since i’m working all of next weekend, i’ll more than likely get 3 days of christmas off. Christmas eve, day and boxing day, so i can make that long drive to see my parents and then make my way back here.
So do I…Wow.
Work t’nite Work at “the program” a group home for teenaged boys.
Head still ringing!!
Gravy is it’s own food group, kinda like beer…..
Time to self medicate!!
I get extra turkey legs, roast them til they are toasty brown in a hot oven, add onion, celery, carrot, garlic cloves and fresh thyme, marjoram, bit of rosemary and sage, cover with water and simmer for 3 hours, strain and voila- turkey stock.
the toon should be a good head cleaner then bbugs. i remember seeing this one when i was a kid – was one that came round every year before thanksgiving.
Hey Christine! Turkey stock is good stuff.
and lots of extra brown meat to go in the gravy :) yummy yummy indeed sophie
I’m with you totally.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Yeah, i’ve come to love ham a lot more myself too as i’ve gotten older. Turkey’s all well and good. But ham…yum.
and the day after, open faced turkey sandwich drenched in gravy. I’m getting hungry :-)
i can make a lot more stuff outta ham leftovers than turkey leftovers. and the bone is a great start to winter soups.
me too, and I just had cherry pie and vanilla ice cream a couple of hours ago
now what?
only getting? dayam, my tummy started rumbling about 50 comments ago.
Oh gosh I made turkey stock for years — too old now,and I don’t care.
this has become quite the food thread
It sure didn’t hurt any this ones purty darn funny!!
Not really as we will be cooking one on the weekend! Just so we do have the left overs and all the goodies that can be made with them(:>))
I just finished making homemade eggnog, just waiting for it to cool off, gonna add a little brandy….
So….Who’s having us all over for Thanksgiving?
We have had both ham & Turkey… What a feast!! And talk about left overs mmmmmmmmmm all kinds!!
Come on over!
Heh. we can food-blog here after our respective meals…
Should I bring a dish?
what did you have in mind?
Everybody at my house ends up falling asleep on the living room floor
ohmystars – i had not even thought of eggnog.
i swear, every drop goes to my hips and while drinking eggnog, i. do. not. care.
At my house everybody always says they are too full for dessert, but since I slave away and make it from scratch, I make them eat it. I am the dessert Nazi…
Standard recipe for stock just change the bird and you have different stock, or use shrimp shells and you have seafood stock… but the slow simmering and all the herbs and spices is what makes them all so good!
We usually bring the horsdeorves
Weather permitting (a big if), I find a walk outdoors after dinner helps keep me awake and prepares me for that late nite supper…
but sometimes I sneak in a nap anyway
I only make it during the holidays and I use 2% milk, so it’s not so bad….(guilty conscience).
sounds good!
The Stock or you Christine???? ‘g’
I buy the store stuff, the low cal isn’t too bad
nothing to compare to what you make, though, I’m sure!
we always resolved that when doing turkey day at my moms. since my step-dad is a vienna-trained baker, we always took a break at the table, drinking coffee (or more wine) chatting away while our food settled.
then we dug into desserts.
yup, I always save shrimp and lobster shells to make stock, and when I roast a whole chicken I make chicken stock with the carcass. I always have some kind of stock frozen in the freezer. I really love sauces and since I make them from scratch, they are very low in fat.
Rum or Brandy!
One thanksgiving I ate With my grandparents and two hours later my future ML forced me to eat againand I was stuffed when I left my grand parents!!!
I sometimes buy the store stuff too, it’s not half bad.
OH noses 1/2 or nothing!! Hell I only make it once or twice a year so splurge…
I do sprinkle nutmeg on top
a pro-baker in the family, I would be as big as a house.
Me too.
I’m about ready to indulge very shortly.
back in the day, before they retired, we used to do cookie runs with the girls every year after thanksgiving and before christmas. once a year, we would walk into their bakery and everyone got to pick and choose. no limits and my mom would egg the girls on, take some of this and here, let me put some of that into the bags. we would walk out to the car with our arms full of bags and drive home with enough cookies and treats to keep us well loved into the new year.
Outta juice, gotta go
Everybody have a great night!!!
Bye.
okay, have now poured myself a little eggnog with a little brandy. very tasty and warming….
DR says no so….. its Calistoga only(:>((
g’nite bbugs
Wow, sounds like a kid’s paradise (and some grownups too).
*gasp*
not even plain eggnog?
nite bbugs
Peace and sweet dreams BB.
Heh,
Find a new Dr.
I am very sad :-(
doing it once a year kept is special and the girls respectful of the treat it was.
baby girl was born two days before christmas and grew up with my step-dad making her a birthday cake every year. now that she is growed up and living in utah, she says it does not feel like christmas without a grandpa steve birthday cake.
LOL! I’m with you. That’s what I would do.
plains OK no rum or brandy(:>((
Family traditions are so precious and special.
plain is better than nothing.
most of the time, i drink it plain nahant. most people put too much alcohol in it for my taste anyway.
I have some spices to make mulled wine with from a friend. I might just do so this year for the holidays. Between that and the godiva powdered chocolate to make hot chocolate with ^_^ i figure i’m in for much goodness whether i’m home here in GR or not this turkey day.
My family does both turkey and ham on our christmas feasts, have to have plenty to feed the farmer appetites. I eat like a bird compared to them, and that feast is one of the few times i’m ever so full i’m not hungry 2 hours later. But i don’t turn down dessert, my cousins have gotten VERY good at making apple and cherry pies. I’ll never be much of a cook, but i don’t turn down much at those feasts, then enjoy the company of everyone. I haven’t had the money for return gifts the last few years, but its just going HOME that matters most. 3 generations of my extended family, and that’s just from grandpa and gramma alone. There’s even more when it comes to all of granpa’s brothers and sisters (he had 11 of those).
I promise I just pour a splash, or two….
Can’t do unfortunately Stanford Doctors!! If I want to stay in the “Program” No booze no pot no nothing… except coffee, juice, water… milk (nope) and such… they do tests to make sure..
..
..
..
Wow, sounds really great. I wish I had more family.
yeap, being with family is the best gift of all alias.
I understand, it just seems a little harsh that a guy can’t have one lousy glass of eggnog during the holidays.
I’ll slam another shot for ya on my end right now Bud.
Family is the most important thing… ya gets lots of love with them… I am glad I come from a large family on both side of the family and I am one of six… I also raise six and have six grand kids!! So to me Family is the best thing in the world… Still stay in touch with cousins back in the Boston area… Always will..
Sacrafice and service to others is beautifula man. sniff sniff.
Oh thanks Busted I will enjoy it virtually(:>))
I remember that Nixon interview. What I mainly remember is that he never, to my satisfaction at least, admitted he did wrong. He didn’t apologize. But it was good to see Frost again, what a funny dear man.
“I am not a crook” yeah right the bastard was as crooked as they come… well maybe not as bad as Shrub and Darth!
hey margot
It’s something i treasure. I’m somewhat reclusive when i’m not working, but my family is responsible for me being able to really socialize. Otherwise i’d be the stereotypical nerd or geek recluse. A huge, boisterous family that likes my black sheep ways and never discouraged me from being curious. *grin*
It means i don’t have any kids of my own (at this point i’m the spinster auntie, but i don’t mind.), but i’ve still got more to do at the moment. No time, and with what i have in mind? Finding someone that will commit to leaving country with me is not going to happen. I’ll likely start dating again when i get to where i’m going, which isn’t too far off either when i think about it.
I’ll also be a lot closer to everyone after that too. Just on the canuck side of the border and not this one. :D I love having an international family, it gives a unique perspective on things here.
alias, are you all recovered from the move?
I’m a “spinster” auntie myself. I love being an aunt. I enjoy the kids and then they go home. They also like me better then their parents most of the time.
Thats why I like being a grandpa Oh and I have the no diaper rule down pat… Tell them I changed my share including theirs and now it is their turn… Oh yeah and then the grand kids get to go home… by then it’s whew their gone… now I can take a snooze!
That’s the ticket!
Almost. The last two days of flare up hell and the nausea follow up haven’t helped. I’m going to try to get the rest of it done before the 1st. I’ve given up on the cleaning aspect, the landlords can do that bit. I’d love to get the deposit back, but i’m figuring they probably won’t give it anyway. Jerks that they are.
So i’m just going to get everything over that i can in the next week and that’ll be it. Then i can sort at my own rate and recover fully. There’s a lot i want to get to goodwill especially. This is the time to pare down to the essentials again. Especially since i figure i’ll be moving again in possibly a year.
Back to being a vagabond, unless i manage to land a hospital job. But my feet haven’t stopped itching with wanderlust and i doubt they will anytime soon. That’s why i got the passport years ago and just renewed it.
my grandgirls came post-diaper stage and well into pre-teen. i will get to spoil them when they are here (every summer) now that i am up here. and this place is the perfect place to explore the bay at low tide.
i’ve sent away for a certified copy of my birth certificate. since i need one for my driver’s license up here, i picked up a passport application at the post office. when the commonwealth of virginia sends me my papers, i can then get my license up here and apply for my first evah passport.
ok, i’m tired and that was very ackwardly worded.
since i need my papers to get a license, i decided to go ahead and get a passport since i need my papers to do that. i no longer have the excuse that i don’t have my certified copy of my birth certificate to procrastinate.
That will be fun and kids sure love to walk at the beach at low tide… They just never know what the tide has left behind… It was especially best after a big storm… Found all kinds of things… and when there was a dead low tide it was the best time to find fishing lures weight and such that broke off the fisherman’s lines when they got caught in the seaweed!…
I need to renew my passport, I’m thinking of visiting New Zealand.
Make sure and disable the forking chip they put in ‘em now.
Then act ignorant if ya actually use it.
Use teh Google for instructions.
Nite Suz sleep well and just listen to the waves on the beach all night long!
i read that howie post and sent it to my mom when she got her newest passport along with one word
hammer
i wasn’t leaving nahant.. just saying i’m tired
The big question is, are you planning to use the passport?
hmm
I’m here, Suz can’t leave now.
what’s up?
hey jacqrat – long time no see
Thud time fer Busted.
Y’all have a nice evening/morning and I will torment ya later.
Thud.
I have been here, but nothing to say, usually.
Peace and sweet dreams….
Well save the good will for when you do go to sleepy land!
HAve another one for me Busted before ya hit the sack! Nite busted(:>))
g’thud busted
Yeah, i’ve got to get ahold of the people in Chicago to get a new copy of my birth certificate to start the immigration process. I’ll need that for the pile of paperwork to get my dual citizenship for Canada. I had one like 13 years ago, but it didn’t last long. I also used that to get my first passport as well. So…time for a new one for a new set of paperwork. My parents sent for that one at the time, now it’s my turn.
Oh, instead of disabling the passports? There’s protective sleeves that can limit the ability to distance read those RFID chips. The best of them make it so only something a few inches away can read it instead of a few feet. That way you don’t get your identity hacked. I carry mine in one of those sleeves all the time. I’ll see if i can’t get the name of the company. Just not tonight. *yawns*
ok, the bride said i should bring a plate for bringing home some leftovers. i wonder what kinda of plate-like container i can find to bring back my *ahem* doggie bag in.
would appreciate it when ya find out alias. is it okay to send ya email (using my special powers) so that you have my email addy to send the info to?
I would go with a nice sized tupperware type of container, therefore no spills on the ride home.
i’ll have to see what they have at the fred meyer. its gotta still sorta look like a plate so i have the illusion of not trying to be a hog with leftovers. since its 45 minutes of winding and hilly coast highway back down here from seaside, i will definitely need a cover to prevent spills. since the resort they are at is not pet friendly, token will have to be bribed with his share of leftovers too yanno.
Sure! It’s something i’m glad i learned about myself. i hadn’t realized the newer generations of passports had those chips in them and how easily someone can glean stuff off them. One sleeve limits it to inches, and if you can manage to stuff it into two? Virtually unreadable until you take it out to swipe across for border crossings of any type.
Token definitely deserves his cut.
poor guy has to stay home with bailey the cat.
He is just one of the cutest pups I’ve ever seen.
don’t worry Mom they will have fun together and they will greet you when you come home! And when you give them some of the bounty they will be jumping with joy(:
bailey knows how to use the doggy/cat flap in the kitchen door – token, well, there is a reason his full name is token einstein gomer – the flap confounds him. on the plus side, he will be safe inside (its supposed to rain) and i don’t have to worry about him getting out on the road while i’m gone.
Night everyone~
Maybe even do a little Snoopy dance :-)
Peace and sweet dreams…
nite alias
and the rest of you have a good nite also
Peace and sweet dreams neuro.
g’nite alias
g’nite neuro
I’m off to slumberland myself so peace and sweet dreams to all…..
It is always best for dogs to stay inside they like to wonder following their nose and don’t watch out for danger very well,,, especially the little ones like we have Suz… tucker loves to greet the neighbors but the other evening my Dr neighbor was in a hurry as he was heading for his shift and Tucker ran across the street and stopped right behind his car… Good thing he heard me yelling to Tucker to get back… boy was I pissed at him and he knew it… We didn’t talk for a while and he just moped until Julie got home before I finally petted him…
Nite Sophie Cuz… sleep well
Nite Alias and Neuro sleep well!
Dam I guess the party is over !!
nite
Nite Pups(:>)
g’nite sophie
g’nite nahant
guess its time for me to head to slumberland myself – thanks ya’ll for hanging out with me tonight.
top o the mornin
everyanyoneAnd to you indeed. Cold as bush’s heart here this morning. 1 degree short of 20.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo, Friedman and Kristof today. Frank Rich is off. Ms. Dowd gives us “Marriage on the Rocks,” in which she says gays who supported Barack Obama had the bittersweet experience of seeing voters who surged to the polls to vote Democratic also vote for Proposition 8, which turned gay “I dos” into “You can’ts.” The Moustache of Wisdom says “We Found the W.M.D.” He says the national economy is in a real code red, and addressing this issue can’t be put off for two months. (Much less a Friedman Unit…) Mr. Kristof, in “The Pakistan Test,” says while the U.S. government is fighting Islamic extremism in Pakistan with bombs, private donations are quietly financing a more important campaign: education.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got French toast casserole this morning. I woke up feeling a little bit grumpy this morning, but looking at the red bellied woodpecker working on a seed cake in the garden has put me in a MUCH better mood. Have a great day.
