MSNBC:
MIKE VIQUEIRA: Let me ask you this, Chris you know..I’m sorry, Ari. Chris Cilizza, the Fix blog in the Washington Post, quoted a Democratic aide who said about bloggers and the Lieberman vote, quote "They can rant and rage but they still do not put the fear into folks to actually change their votes."
You know, I work on the Hill and I’ve heard that sentiment expressed many times over again, that the netroots — the liberal blogosphere — overestimates its influence. What do you say to that?
ARI MELBER: Well, number one you have to look at the source. There you have someone who isn’t even going to speak on the record, under their own name. That would suggest some fear right there, hiding behind anonymity for a very basic claim to the Washington Post. And someone who sees themselves potentially — I don’t know the person because they won’t stand up for themselves — but potentially a competitor with the liberal blogs. Maybe it is from a congressional office that has had conflict — maybe it was a Lieberman aide, we don’t know because that person won’t say. But I do think you have competition here.
Good one, Melber.

Yeah, I saw that one this morning, too. This sounds like a DLC counter-attack against bloggers to me.
Good catch, Jane!
Bob in HI
Oops– vague referent. By “this,” I meant what Melber and the “Democratic aide” were referring to, and that the “Democratic aide” was probably a DLC person.
Bob in HI
This is an excellent strategy: “Why should I respond on television to an assertion made anonymously by someone who is afraid to attach their name to their views in a newspaper?”
I gotta say, though, that for a candidate who differentiated himself from Hillary Clinton primarily in the arena of foreign policy judgment, appointing her his Secretary of State is a puzzler. He must really want her out of the Senate.
I’ve been using this handle for over thirty years: if you can’t figure out who I am from my handle, you aren’t trying. What kind of stupid pseudonym is “Ari Melber” anyway? Hmmm… it’s probably an anagram of “Male Bi Err.” Anyone know whether this guy swings both ways?
thing is, we ain’t done whit joe. things can happen. ct will do their thing soon, i hope. then other stuff will happen. it ain’t over til it’s over, ya know.
I would comment on this, but I refuse to talk to someone with such a transparently made-up name…
As a Senator, Hillary is completely independent of Barack’s control. She is free to roam, and to develop an alternative approach to FoPo. As his Sec’y of State, Hillary is not so free. She can argue her POV in cabinet sessions, etc., but she’s supposed to stay in line and not free-lance.
Of course what usually happens to an independent cabinet member is that they become a source of leaks unfavorable to the administration’s public position. If Hil becomes SoS, expect lots of leaks from State.
Bob
Yes, anyone who wants to swing at bloggers needs to identify themselves.
And then they will become famous. Or infamous.
not a puzzler if obama doesn’t actually have significant differences. could have been a strategy to win the primary, nothing more.
don’t know, just throwing out a possibility.
Well let’s see how that Obama Cabinet is shaping up.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (bad)
Attorney General Eric Holder (mediocre to bad)
Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner (bad)
HHS Secretary Tom Daschle (OK)
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano (Good)
This is supposed to be a team of rivals? Who’s kidding who?
there has to be a reason. a good one, if it is true. how about clinton’s ability to attract the left leaning thugs? that was where bama was weak. then consider that she doesn’t have to introduce herself to anyone. ten consider tat se has this spouse wo migt be useful.
i would submit not rivals but maybe more like fresh thinkers under a great leader.
There are no left leaning Republicans. You only have those who are far, far right and those who are far right.
This is snark, right?
New sign on the White House:
Under New Management: All K-Street Coupons Still Honored
Several days ago Josh pointed out that both times Hillary was in charge of a large group of people, her prez campaign and her medical care group, they were both disasters. She seems to have no management ability. So now she’s in charge of a State Dept that’s in tatters because of neglect? (Her NYS senate races don’t count cause she had no competition.)
don’t agree. i believe he is going for a centrist gov’t. there will be some common ground if we just stop shouting at one another, imo.
no, sir. it’s what i really believe.
How do a bunch of mostly Clinton era retreads and Republican lites amount to fresh thinking? With each appointment, it becomes clearer why Obama didn’t want to do anything about Lieberman. He agrees with Holy Joe more than he disagrees with him. I expect if Lieberman had been on the ticket with McCain instead of Palin Obama would have been tempted to vote Republican, you know in a show of centrism and bipartisanship.
Hillary can’t even play the piano to entertain foreign leaders
Was Lieberman on Obama’s short list for Veep, dya think?
mgmt can be done for her, i think. she just needs to have a particular direction. if she as nothin to do but do a job she will be great. and i don’t even like her.
lol
Condi was ineffective as SOS. You always had the impression that she weilded no power on her own. She always had to go to the boss (Cheney) for instructions. She was like the car salesman who has to defer to the Sales Manager. You had the sense that she would not dare step out of line. You had the impression that World Leaders – International Counterparts – could read this behavior like a book.
Hillary may be difficult for Obama to rein in. Will she be all hawkish and shit?
Well, you certainly have a perfect description of the “Wellesley type,” and that’s not a snark.
And she exhibited such stellar management technique in her campaign for the presidency. I expect she’ll surround herself with another extraordinary staff, as previously. /s
She brings star power, opens doors, and can reach any country’s citizens through its media, over the heads of its leaders. Other than that, I think she’ll be very frustrated in this role. I wish her, and Barack Obama, well in this arrangement. Lucky for them both, the State Department could not possibly be any worse than it has over the past eight years.
The key will be who is National Security Adviser, I suppose.
O’Hanlon’s one of Hillary’s advisors.
well, sir in the respect that there is new leadership there will be new direction. it’s all about the head guy in the first place. i’m willin to give him a chance even with what you call retreads. i’ve been around long enough to realize that the boss sets the tone.
I really think that for HHS and DHS, you have to concede that these are potentially great choices. Daschle, more than anyone in the party but Ted Kennedy, has thought about and worked on universal health care. And Napolitano will make Lou Dobbs’ head explode.
That alone makes these great choices.
she went there?
He of the Warmongers. That’s interesting. Insane Clown Posse.
Yes. Class of 69, iirc, 3 years behind me. I didn’t know her but I know the type well. Didn’t like it then, and the passage of time has not changed that.
Excellent points. I certainly hope that the Obama team is dealing with this.
Bob in HI
It is how she first became famous: speaking at graduation, her photo and excerpts appeared in LIFE magazine.
Oh gosh, I had forgotten that. With Obama’s embrace of all things Clinton, even O’Hanlon will have a shot at getting a position at State. The Very Serious People meter has just gone off the scale.
Obama’s Wall Street funders. I had to chortle when Obama was giving his Wall Street vs Main Street homily back in Sept, with Rubin and Summers, two of the four responsible for the world wide economic collapse directly behind him, smug as can be. Now Geithner. Lol, lol, lol!

…tucked away in his database of 2.5 million donors is the approximately 180,000 power brokers that have funded nearly 60% of his campaign. Included in this list are the more than 594 campaign bundlers including 15 lobbyist bundlers who have accounted for over $140 million in contributions. Included in this list are just 36 bundlers accounting for over $18 million dollars, with two bundlers raising over $1 million, and one over $2 million. These amounts are impressive considering that just 552 individuals have accounted for nearly 1/3 of his total campaign contributions. Of course determining the occupation can be tricky considering the Obama campaign lists nearly 100 bundlers as having unknown occupations, nearly 100 who are listed as “self-employed”, and dozens of “homemakers” and “retired” individuals.
I wonder who will be Hillary’s Wilkerson.
i am in agreement with you. my point is, who am i to argue with the pres when he is bama? he is not a dumb guy.
It’s as if the Dutch had put a tulip-speculator in charge of their Exchequer at the height of the panic.
Remember when manufacturers got to be Treasury Secretary? We had the head of GM and the head of Ford in succession. Now, a bunch of daytraders.
And one of the ways you can tell the tone that is being set is the people he/she surrounds him/herself with. This does not look good YMMV.
really? she was some kind of wizz? bill said she was smarter.
No prez is deserving of trust and every prez should be argued with. Putting prez on pedestal is sure way to get bad results.
Thanks Jane.

The Reptiles have looted the country of $10 Trillions.
They have invested $10 Trillions overseas and stashed some in pirate coves.
This Conspiracy is the Crime of the Century. And it is Paulson’s job to hide the evidence in bad banks, never to see the light of day.
Think of Paulson in a bubble, huffing and puffing away to keep it inflated, and all the while forcing foreigners to buy our paper. The FED/Paulson are practicing financial warfare. And they are out of bullets.
Well, they made it through the elections. Maybe, Thanksgiving.
Christmas is 5,000 ships away.
sorry ymmv? i’ve been gone. yes, i know yer sceptical. don’t know what to say to you.
Neither was the captain of the Titanic.
Wow. 15,000 people have died in Pakistan in terrorist related incidents since 9/11, including 3,000 law enforcement.
no pedistal here but i am willing to wait to see the results. i only do reality. it is how i make my living. i make things work.
Hugh’s gotta layoff the White Bill Clinton. Why, he hasn’t even taken office yet. He has no influence over anything that happens in the Senate or the Democratic party until he’s inaugurated, and you’re not supposed to criticize his cabinet picks until then. LOL.
don’t know about that. he did sail into ice. in that respect i agree. why in the hell would anyone decide they can fix it? what is the option? that’s why i am modestly optimistic.
YMMV = your mileage may vary
I think I would like to know how long a grace period Obama has or what actions he would take before it is considered legitimate to question his fundamental assumptions. Because from where I’m sitting there is a big hole in the side of the ship. The Republicans want to widen it and the Democrats are saying they aren’t ready to do anything but in the future they may decide to close up to half of it.
Someone made the point yesterday that, with the election over, now is the only time to exert pressure. After the inauguration it’s too late as the team is in place and the die is cast.
the next 6 months will be critical.
When will the selections be going before the respective committees for confirmation?
After the inauguration I think.
tanks. you may question anything at any time, of course. not the point. politcs is a dirty business. no time limit. i prefer to wait just a little to see. it is my preference. go for it.
I really, really want to believe in Obama, but I have to say so far his cabinet picks have been pretty disheartening. And I agree if we don’t gripe about it now, it will be too late after they’re confirmed.
ot drive by – listening now. v good so far.
i would agree with that. unfortunately, we (fdl) have little to do with it right now. machinery is in motion for the next admin. as i always say to customers. Have realistic expectations.
From Bloomberg:
The Reptiles want to pump another $1.2 Trillions into our eight largest banks/scams.
Let em go bankrupt. Expose the crimes.
Close the FED.
Start over.
would you care to suggest a list that you like?
Using the list of appointments, who would you like to have seen Obama appoint to each post? Just want to see where you are coming from.
The one name that I have heard floating around that scares the hell out of me is former McCain supporter Gen James Jones for national security advisor.
Wasn’t he the guy that was working with Cheney to go around the joint chiefs.
Actually, it’s not a grace period at all. Ur just not supposed to criticize him and we’re all supposed to like right wing subjugation better because we’re being told it’s happening under a left wing socialist. Who actually isn’t that at all.
i don’t have access to bloomberg. what is the source?
that’s the second time i have heard that. go around for what function?
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/…..refer=home
Yes, the FU will be extremely useful in defraying concerns over the obvious lack of progress.
We were discussing him earlier. Ackerman likes him, several of us not so much.
http://attackerman.firedoglake…..nsalikely/
National Security Advisor. See my link at 67.
i’ll bet you can tink for yerself. no one tells me wat to do. make waves.
For that kind of money couldn’t we just create a half dozen new banks with complete public ownership. Let the eight go under with all their toxic shit.
not to go on topic :) but, you know, just because this person was anonymous, doesn’t make that comment wrong. it seems pretty true to me, especially in the Senate. we have some effect but not nearly enough. Yet.
I think he was circumventing the joint chiefs between Petraeus and Cheney but I could be wrong.
too obscure fer me, sorry. can’t go through it all. defer to you.
ya mean that the guy was actually tinkin fer hisself? not qualified fer gov’t.
New Ian post upstairs
State: Chris Hill or Bill Richardson
DOJ: Napolitano or Seth Waxman (liberals) or Bruce Fein (conservative)
Treasury: Roubini or Stiglitz
Defense: unsure
i could take your list without a problem. want to run fer office?
Bruce Fein – very interesting.
Oh, in regard to Treasury and Roubini, I posted upstairs that I think he’s a better fit as the head of the Council of Economic Advisors, who actually shape overall economic policy.
Geither works fine as a figurehead to placate Wall Street in my view.
