Tough luck for Howard Dean on the Daschle thing on HHS; Dean must be banging his head on the wall this morning, given what a good foot solder he’s been..not only for the last four years, but also lining up behind Obama on the Lieberman thing.

Why not Supreme Court for Dean?

WFAN reporting Daily News speculation that if the NY Senator gets SoS, NY Gov appoints Bill to that seat. Ooohh. I’m seeing the word ‘troika’ for some strange reason.

The basic concept is this: A government-organized exchange would let individuals and small businesses buy coverage from private companies, or from a new government-run, Medicare-like plan. Subsidies would aid lower-income people. Large employers would be required to offer coverage or pay into a fund. Small employers would get a tax credit if they provided insurance. And a host of initiatives would be launched to reduce costs and improve quality.

Any ideas on how well this plan would work?

It’s got to be someone who is not seen as a New York City person - Upstate NY’ers see Chuck Schumer as ‘downstate’s senator’. He is not viewed as someone who knows anything about territory north of Yonkers. In NYS politics, perception is everything. The reason Hillary won is that she did her homework, traveled all over the state, did the ‘eating corn dog’ thing at the state fair, etc. etc. She knows a tremendous amount about NYS history, development, industry, etc. Whoever is tagged to replace her has to be seen as a ’statewide’ person.

Of the two, Cuomo is seen as a ’statewide’ person because he’s AG and his offices do good work across the state and are very open about promoting what they do. If the two, I think he’s the one who has the best chance of getting re-elected if he’s appointed. Bobby Kennedy Jr. is another one - but I think he’s angling for federal environmental work.

thanks, later i was thinking about what struck me about sachs is that one of the reasons i haven’t liked him much is the role he has played in forcing neoliberal “solutions” on other countries - with disastrous results and no sense of responsibility. otoh, i actually think he was trying doing good for people (unlike neoliberals who only care about how they and people like them do) and was not as hard core stupid or fundamentalist as some.

so to hear sachs talk like that was a bit of a surprise.

i wonder how franks et al. took it - they’ve heard from roubini that an economic stimulus was needed yesterday, that they can’t wait until january. given that i’ve yet to see this congress handle the economic situation competently, i have zero confidence that they know what they are doing by waiting until january.

used to think congress was purposefully letting the economy tank under bush because they saw it could be used to their electoral advantage. now i’m thinking that they really have no clue and don’t care to try to find one.

hope i’m wrong.

Thinking about Dean and health. The new conventional poop is that Barack wants to get a health insurance bill passed pronto, while the iron is hot. Daschle to shepherd the bill through the Senate. After that, who cares? They will need to appoint someone to set up and administer the programme. That’s more Dean’s line of work. He’d be good at it, too, to judge from his stint as VT gov.

used to think congress was purposefully letting the economy tank under bush because they saw it could be used to their electoral advantage. now i’m thinking that they really have no clue and don’t care to try to find one.

I rarely thought the former was the case, except in my very paranoid moments. I think the Rs follow economic policies that fail out of “sincere” (but completely wrong) idea that they are the right policies, that is they cause shocks. The Rs are then surprised, but are quick to use the shocks as an excuse to double down. In other words, the shocks are, from the pov of the Rs, inadvertant. Just like the Rs are doing now, the reason why the party failed is that it wasn’t rightwing enough, they react the same way when their economic policies fail.

As for the Ds, think that they are like battered wives. So are trying hard to get back to economic sanity, but can’t readily gain recontrol of their lives.
