Strange Overtones
Poor Boy
For nearly thirty years Eno and Byrne have been working their magic together. Tonight we have two cuts from the new album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. You can learn more or download a free a mp3 here.

woohoo – free download!
hey es
Digg it!
Eureka!
Classic stuff.
And Heads rule.
Nearly thirty years… can you believe it?
technology challenged confession time
can I download an mp3 onto my computer, or do I need an mp3 player?
i’ve never done it
Once downloaded, double-clicking it should launch a player for it. You got iTunes?
Goes straight to my itunes on a Mac.
I wish I didn’t have to look at that picture of Loserman over to the right…
his face reminds me of his whine
your pc should come with a windows media player which plays mp3’s and video
if ya don’t like it, get itunes, which has a great player.
don’t know…not unless it comes loaded with Windows Vista…
and to be clear, just download and then when you open it, the pc should launch an mp3 player or give you a couple choices of players to choose from.
Was thinking about a quote from some senate aide, about how the people in power aren’t afraid of us. I think that’s the problem. So why not really scare them? Target a few Blue Dog/Liebercrats who are in districts that are tough for them to keep, and back a Green. Not for the Green to win, obviously, but for the Blue Dog to lose. They won’t fear us until we can take away their power, and that’s the only thing I can think of to take it away.
I do have Windows Media Player–do I want Express Settings, or Custom Settings?
WMP 11, that is
Or you can download WinAmp, if you don’t want to use iTunes or WMP. Lots of choices out there.
If I go to download a tune, will it automatically find my player?
maybe suzanne answered that at 12
I still use the term… new album, Guess I should start saying new CD or new mp3.
I say album, that’s what I think of them as
i use record, and i’m keeping it.
the best stuff is on records.
neuro, if you are given a choice in setup, go with express for the windows media player. or if ya want, go over to apple dot com and up top near the right is the link for ipods and itunes. that page will give ya the link to download itunes.
I still say album, whether it’s mp3 or CD form. Granted, the UK’s been releasing on vinyl again for some time right along with all the newer mediums for music. :D They started that in 2001 and it’s been steady as a trend.
Daptone records does a lot of vinyl too.
Just home from giving another concert, the last of this series with the UAA Wind Ensemble. Then Friday and Saturday with the Anchorage Civic Orchestra. Then two days teaching next week. Then – six days of rest, without having to deal with working on a political campaign, for the first time since July, 2006. Whew!
well deserved rest et
what are the advantages of itunes? (since I don’t have an ipod)
how is begich’s replacement as mayor going to be selected, and will you be involved in that, ET?
iTunes = internet radio, great CD burning tools, access to the iTunes store
i only started using it after i got an ipod and discovered that you don’t need an ipod to buy and listen to music on your computer. itunes comes with a built in music player and you can use it without buying music through their store.
i used winamp for years and liked it. i’ve also used windows media player and liked it. it really is a matter of what you like best.
I’m going to use it to get back into writing music. Between 2005 and 2007, I wrote nine new pieces, with a lot of performances of them. This past year, I’ve only written two new works. I got a fellowship in May based on me writing a bunch of stuff I’ve put on hold, so I’ve got an obligation to produce.
Palin addressed a group of oil execs this morning in Anchorage:
Heh – I don’t live in Anchorage.
The selection is automatic – the deputy mayor, a Democrat thinking of running in the already scheduled April election – is temporarily appointed for 90 days. Begich wants to keep working through the end of 2008, so the scheduled election is 93 days after he leaves. It is up to the city clerk to decide if she wants to hold a special election three days before the scheduled regular election, but I doubt she will do that.
hehehehehe modest indeed
I only asked because I was pretty involved with a local legislative campaign this year, as well as doing some volunteer work for Obama. After the election I enjoyed not having any political work to do for a few days but then found myself thinking ahead to what to do next. I’m thinking about maybe getting involved in city elections in the spring, mostly because I am already starting to miss it. Sounds like you would rather do music for a while.
Didn’t they like “Drill, baby,drill”?
Listening to strange overtones now. i like it.
What’s on my mind tonight? Someone made an opera about the A-bomb, and Heather’s talking at Harvard soon. But you guys probably knew all that.
The big three – Exxon, Conoco-Phillips and BP hate her guts.
I can’t wait to hear Dr. Atomic! I’ve been working on an opera about the H-Bomb for twelve years. That’s where the “Edward Teller” handle comes from….
Made my day when I read Heathers diary today.
You could do a double bill. ;)
Are you going to include anything about Teller’s testimony against Oppenheimer?
((( ES )))
Evenin’ all !
Dammit ET, when are ya gonna perform in Toronto ?
It’s an inspirational tale, that’s for sure. For me, the image has always been the way I saw the Japanese portrayed on Korean TV. They were always the ones menacing the Koreans, knocking over stuff, and generally being awful. Quite tame compared to what actually happened, I suspect, but even we foreigners got the idea. The Japanese had left more than forty years before I visited the place.
Now, to at least a large part of the Middle East, we’re the Japanese.
Hey Petro…)
I don’t think so.
Teller’s rich material, far more operatic than Oppenheimer, the subject of Dr. Atomic. My opera – should I finish it – will be about Teller’s role in Project Chariot. The guy was actually in charge of a nutty Atomic Energy Commission division called The Department of Nuclear Excavation.
Americablog put up this one minute Youtube of Bush at the G20.
Talk about a national disgrace… every American should see this.
1,832 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Eurwka Springs and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Toss another log on the fire and keep the tunes rollin’ we’re grindin’ through another one tanight.
Hey how about Napolitano as Secretary of DHS, I wanna see her handle Ol’ Joe Likuderman in front of the TV cameras…that should bury him in public once and for all. Do ya think that was one of the things Obama talked ta McCrazy about yesterday, tellin’ ‘im Nepolitano would go ta the Feds and not run for Senate in 2010 in return for support in committee and on cloture?
And now ken we get Granholme from Michigan onto the Supreme Court…I hate ta lose the governorship but she’s better positioned there to enter the Senate in a few.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE’RE GUNNA NEED EVERYONE IN JANUARY!!!
Can we post a diary at Oxdown that is a duplicate of an article we’ve posted at our own blog first?
you can download load it Neuro! windows media player will handle it just fine!
i’ve seen diaries that indicate at the bottom that the diary is cross-posted at (linked blog).
Might be an even wackier scheme than the atomic airplane, although I’d personally rate it a tie.
Citizen Flamethrower! Good lord, I hope ta god Janet has some seriously thick and durable protective clothing.. Hard to imagine the kind of pond scum removal she will have begin with inside DHS.
I can only hope she tells Obama to dismantle it.. and that she brings to light a great deal of what Lieberman has tried to hide for the last few years as chairman.
What’s that about Granholm and the Supreme Court? *blinks* I’d love it,but right now we need her for just a little bit longer while Michigan scrambles to find something other than the Auto industry to depend on. Especially if the Shrub is going to totally write off the entire industry! That and i want her to have a successor groomed so we don’t get Dick DeVos(and his Giant Ego) in the Governer’s chair after she’s gone.
Her term is almost up, then she’ll be free to do whatever she pleases for the Obama Admin.
{{{{thanks}}}}
I wish. The message I’m hearing out of the Obama camp so far is “don’t rock the boat”. I’d be shocked if they did anything remotely like show up Joe Lieberman. If Obama wanted to do that, he could have just done something else these last few days besides save Joe’s worthless butt.
Oxdown rules
Cross posting from your own blog is welcome.
thanks es – i really should bookmark that page
You know the problem with that is they will have to continue an awful lot of crooked behavior OR be criminal themselves.
LOL I knew I had read it somewhere. Took me a couple of minutes to find it again.
could you explain that please, ES? if “they will have to continue an awful lot of crooked behavior,” then it seems they WOULD “be criminal themselves,” I don’t understand the either/or….? thanks.
OMG. I am so happy to see W get what he deserves. This video ES shares with us tells the entire story of the history W will enjoy.
Never in my life has a president been treated like this. Not even Nixon.
{{{{ES}}}}
That is my hope too that Joe has been placed in a trap. nobid contracts are a great place for corruption to fester.
Now then does Conn have a Dem Gov to appoint a replacement.
Or do we have to wait for another election? Any investigation hitting Joe will wait until we have a Dem gov.
Or they can make a habit of not seeing things. The best thing I could possibly expect them to do is appoint an honest IG. That might root out some problems, while not embarrassing anyone too much. I’m being awfully optimistic to even suggest that, though.
Byrne and Eno? right up my alley – thanks, ES. nice new sounds, especially the groove in Poor Boy.
“My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” was a pinnacle envelope-pushing effort; Eno’s hand in the Heads’ “Remain in Light” is hall of fame stuff too.
They view Bush as a war criminal. No one wants a historical picture of the criminals that will be tried at the Hague. Not a good photo op. Jus sayin.
Plus the financial disaster he brought on the world is resented.
Oh well.. guess the cats out of the bag with that incomprehensible dribble.. I’m sleepy!
I don’t think they can just leave a lot things/programs/people in place like Obama might want to do.. or they will be as culpable in many many situations as they would be if nothing happened with, say, gitmo.
Hey punaise.. I hoped you will stumble through tonight. BTW, I just figured out the video player at the free mp3 link in the post will play through the entire album. fyi
Yeah.. I may be suffering through a brief moment of unwarranted optimism myself.
Though I do like what bmaz says about Janet… and she sure had to learn how to impress bmaz while surrounded by a majority of GOPer in AZ.
2 million 5 thousand hits on google Bush and bully? Not one world leader shaking the hand of the President of the United States the worlds most powerful country but everyone else shaking hands?
The world leaders wanted something specific from Bush, they all did and they did not get it? But what? I’m sure they will ask Obama.
Bush knows that fact too. Bush loves being popular he loves crowds and adoring fawning people.
This snub will hurt more than making Bush read 6 months of Jane’s posts.
The Bush family will make taking down Obama personal. If anything they will attack him more than they did Clinton.
Right at a time when the economy is tanking. The GOP killing the big three bailout is no accident its a start.
The DLC might want to compromise but they just stepped right back into the heart of the old Clinton wars.
I wonder how long it will take for the DLC to figure it out?
I wonder how long it will take Bush and the GOP to figure out that now is not the time to attack when everyone blames them?
Money for banks but none for Detroit jobs?
We’ll have to see. I’ve become so used to slavish obedience to the President by the rest of the executive that I can’t imagine a better outcome. The President has become much more powerful in the last eight years. It’s almost considered optional to do any investigating or prosecuting at that level. We’ll have to see if that goes for Democrats as well as Republicans, but if Congress is any example, it does.
Understatement of the year a photo of Bush shaking hands would be worth Bush’s weight in Gold in any election around the world to the opposing party.
America and Bush are getting the blame for the world wide economic collapse and that is Bush’s legacy to the world and history.
Exactly, we must make sure the Public never ever forgets that the GOPer’s basically have killed at least 3 million jobs by doing nothing for the car companies. This fact needs to be injected into every election that a GOPer ever enters into! They have broken the economy and bankrupted the Treasury.
I think that was one of the more disappointing aspects of Obama and the senates dual participation in re saving Lieberman.
The senate should have told O to stay out of it…and O shouldn’t have tried to weigh in, imo. Especially since O had already resigned.
What have you heard?
Yeah we need that fact repeated over and over again 3 million jobs.
Citizen Eureka Springs:
I don’t think yer bein’ too optimistic and I don’t think that most of us on the left fully understand the incredible difficulty in makin’ a peaceful transition from full blown fascism to somethin’ that resembles representative democracy. I think that Obama is puttin strong and competent folks in the secretariates and directorships and will be very close to the staffing of the impotant operational and oversight jobs like IG’s and department councils. But remember the fascists have used the rubber stamp congress and the last eight yers of invisibility from oversight to contaminate the entire federal bureacracy.
We may still need to hit the streets to impose popular will or get Obama’s back but let’s make sure we keep our eyes on the realenemy here…and it ain’t Obama.
I don’t know why, but I really want to believe that Obama got something out of that transaction that makes it worth while. I hope he has Joe on a leash that is not obvious to us but is to Obama–and to Joe.
But who knows.
hear, hear, Norske!
Yep Just another heap of shit on the garbage heap of history! He will be used as an example of what a Democracy can’t allow an Administration to get away with!! And that the opposition should have Impeached him in 2001 when he started his wiretap program.
went ahead. made my day.
(thx for the tip)
And that the opposition should have Impeached him in 2001 when he started his illegalwiretap program.
Citizen ThingsComeUndone:
There was a list on Salon the other night (I think it was Salon…I ain’t got a lotta memory cells left) of names most discussed by folks close to the transition about those bein’ listed for Supreme Court appointments.
And now the GOP wants to sell American car companies to the highest bidder quite possibly foreign. that fact will go over great with the 30%ers. America first trumps Union jobs for them heck I think most of them would jump at the chance to make that kind of money and have benefits.
Its the Washington GOP and Press that hates Unions the base not so much.
And that the opposition should have Impeached him in 2001 when he started his illegal wiretap program.
OK… I’m tryin’
I may need to move ta DC and start up Code PINKO if he doesn’t act right. *g*
OK, pups. I posted my Oxdown diary. Probably too Alaska oil wonky for much traction, though…
:-)
I hope he has Joe’s balls in a bag ready to rip them off if Joe steps one inch out of the party line! He can still be stripped of his gavel
Cool! next step impeach Scalia he will do or say something stupid and unethical again soon.
salon.com:
This snub will hurt more than making Bush read 6 months of Jane’s posts.
I think Jane’s articles are written at a reading level higher than fifth grade. (I say “I think”, because I haven’t actually checked.) Bush probably wouldn’t finish them.
I wonder how long it will take for the DLC to figure it out?
Figure what out? They don’t care. They’re rich enough that they don’t have to.
Money for banks but none for Detroit jobs?
Yep. One of those $25B packages they handed to the banks, some of which won’t use it for its intended purpose, could have financed the auto deal, but it won’t happen. Lack of a deal will weaken the unions, and thus please the rich folks. At least, it will please all the rich folks who aren’t in the auto industry, which is most of them.
If you’re Congress, how is this a problem?
I think we’re going to be trying to remember where we read this piece in about three years. Palin will probably be back, at least briefly.
I missed this – what’s he done?
Shrub flubs, snubbed by rubbed-the-wrong club.
Aravososis’ lead-in to the Napolitano news:
She’s no Sarah Palin, but I guess she’ll do.
Citizen EdwardTeller:
Thanx for the Oxdown diary…these con artists and charletans always get caught in swamp of their own lies if they stay in one spot too long. It looks like Alaska politics might ta be gettin’ more interestin’ every day…rather you than I up there Brother ET, cuz I’d be throwin’ some hotstuff around up there if those folks were my representatives.
Keep up the good work bro…we count on ya but don’t let yer music suffer.
The problem, for me, is how deep this culture of “it’s OK if you’re in charge” runs. The Senate actually put off throwing Ted Stevens out until the next session, hoping that Alaskan voters would do their job for them. He was convicted of bribery for crying out loud! How much worse a crime can a legislator commit that’s more of a betrayal to his constituents, save for treason?
a bit of suffering seldom hurts good music, IMHO…
Well Pups time to hit the rack1
Nite
Nite!!
well, convicted of filing false reports that lied about what amounted to bribery…
Bush vs Gore no precedent to be made from that case I don’t think that has EVER HAPPENED. Not recusing himself from Bush vs Gore one of his kids was involved in the Bush Campaign.
Duck hunting with Cheney before deciding whether to keep the Cheney secret energy commission secret.
I want those files. Someone gave Enron the nod to play games with California’s power and its funny the GOP was all ready with a referendum to force another election which resulted in Arnold getting office.
Stupid statements to the press. Ties to Opus Dei
nite all
that was a screwup. I wanted to quote Norske’s “don’t let yer music suffer…”
Nite Nahant
Citizen nahant:
No Citizen, I’m afraid after the new congress is sworn and the committee chairs established any change can be fillibustered by the minority…that’s why keepin ‘im on was a risk but I’m bettin on Obama ‘cuz Lieberwerst is gunna be boxed in by Nepolitano and Obama on one side and a Democratic majority on the other in his own committee.
Nite Neurophius
I think Bush vs Gore is impeachable does the House or Senate decide? If its the House we have the votes.
Oh, right. I was confusing him with Alito again.
Sorry Impeach the Supreme Court Justices
Nite Neuro and Nahant.
No problem
the nuance is important in the charges. the jury only weighed the false reports at face value, but….
The Feds were smart enough to realize they could only win against $t. Ted outside of Alaska. Even if they had gone to the meat on him with a lot worse stuff that has happened up here, they would have been then stuck trying him in Alaska. They were wise to not try to do that, as evidenced by the closeness of the election.
By doing the charges on a crime committed in DC – the place the filings were made – they got what they could.
It’s the House, and I’d be shocked if they had the votes. Bipartisanship and all. (FWIW, they should have the votes.)
The Senate holds the trial.

Unless Christmas sales are strong and I doubt they will be the economy will get worse.
Dang
turning into a pumpkin myself
good night firedogs
I’m going to wait a while before I start worrying about deflation. With fuel prices about half what they were six months ago, there will be a little adjustment, I’d think. Fuel prices have been distorting just about everything for quite a while now.
I’m a lot more concerned about the unemployment and slump in sales.
I figure they’ll be stronger than expected but far from the robust sales of the late 90s. That’s just from my own observation since being in the business in one capacity or another since 1995.
This will be my second recession (i was a preteen in Bush 41’s), or possibly first depression since i live in the rust belt’s ground zero, Michigan. It’s going to affect my family one way or another, and i’m not looking forward to it.
Nite, ES.
I think it’s about time for me to check out of this fine establishment, also. Goodnight, all.
Oh, and that little credit thing. Goodnight.
And so good to know at least three pups will be there to hear Heather speak. Way to represent!
Stronger than expected that would not be hard to do the market would perk up on that news. But is stronger than expected enough to keep retailers in business?
Nite ES, Cujo
Probably not. I think the only reason i’ll come out okay is because i’m in healthcare and i’m already used to living in poverty line wages and conditions. The convenience store part might suffer a little, but the pharmacy part will still go on.
Better than expected, but not enough to help the market recover. Far from that. People are hurting and have been for some time. There’s no way to get around that.
True but we can make it a shorter or longer downturn by what Obama does next. Bush I expect will blame the recession on business cycles and claim that there was nothing he could do and that he was not the cause of the recession.
Funny how that piece of false current wisdom only applies to the GOP.
The GOP will try and stop Obama from doing anything about the recession and then blame him for it.
Rush Limbaugh is already doing it.
Neuro,
Cynical as I am, I keep having teeny, tiny flashes of wondering just how much fun it might be to have Joe in that job watching DHS being dismantled into its component parts in a major reorganization.
i know! That’s another thing that frustrates me and will until the Obama Admin goes to work. I’m quite sure they will get right to work too, but for now they’re pretty much tied to picking people for spots and hammering out a plan. With the GOP laying all the tiger traps they can in the meantime. I wanted to say bear traps, but i think they’re trying to contain a much more dangerous type of critter to no avail.
He hasn’t taken office yet and people are already blaming him for shit falling through. It’s not as if he can twist the Shrub’s arm to get him to sign an auto industry bailout right now.
The business blogs I read say one thing they have been predicting this ever since Bush Greenspan caused the housing bubble by lowering interest rates. However the business news on TV all bought the GOP party line and many still do Maria Bartiromo was all the time saying that Obama would raise taxes.
She never mentioned only on the rich.
All the GOP was behind Jon McCain in keeping the war going even after the bank bailout and wars cost money.
Yet now they can’t find the money to help the big three automakers. They can’t find the money for healthcare.
True but it does tell us how scared the GOP is of him:)
Nite folks!
Attaturk is upstairs!
Feel the Love
It’s not late night anymore but thanks for the Byrne/Eno shoutout. I saw David Byrne about a month ago performing the music of Byrne & Eno and it was brilliant. I never thought I would get to see songs from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts performed live. He played for 2 hours, 3 lengthy encores, and the crowd showed him a lot of love.
And you were gonna be drinkin’ water run through canals and using radioactive ores extracted by this process…
…and I recall that this stuff was actually an idea pushed by Lyndon LaRouche a few years back!
“We have the technology!”
BTW I heard on NPR yesterday a discussion about how all organisms that lived in the mid-1950’s contain cells that have a nuclear-spike of Carbon-14 from the ingested CO2 (if a plant) or plants (if an animal) that absorbed radioactive Carbon isotopes. Enamel in your teeth has a C14 spike that drops off in the mid-1960’s after atmospheric nuclear bomb testing was banned.
