On Tuesday, Israel reinstated the full blockade leaving the people of Gaza without essential humanitarian aid.
And then they upped the ante, as Israeli:
tanks, backed by a bulldozer and military jeep, rumbled about a quarter-mile deep into the tiny seaside strip…
Residents said they levelled lands along the border east of the city of Rafah. It was the first ground action in a week… The Israeli military described the activity as "a routine operation to uncover explosive devices near the border fence in the southern Gaza Strip." (h/t Cernig)
When the U.N. human rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay called on Israel to "immediately to lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip," saying:
"By function of this blockade, 1.5 million Palestinian men, women and children have been forcibly deprived of their most basic human rights for months …This is in direct contravention of international human rights and humanitarian law. It must end now."
Israel responded – ignoring their own first breach of the cease fire – that they were shocked “to read the High Commissioner’s shortsighted press release.”
At the same time, the Israeli Navy detained three international human rights activists and 15 Palestinian fisherman who were on a fishing boat off the coast of Gaza.
The rightwing Israeli source Arutz Sheva called this “Israel Exercises Sovereignty” and scoffed at European media accounts which it noted include charges that the Israeli Navy sprays Palestinian fisherman with :
water cannons that drenched them with "a chemical substance." IDF spokesmen laughed off the allegations as ridiculous and said that "routine and acceptable" measures are taken when boats stray beyond legal limits…
… allegations that machine gunfire has been used to ward off the boats. Radio Netherlands reported that the fishing boats bear bullet holes, and it quoted an unnamed Arab’s claim that fishermen come under fire on a daily basis.
And:
Muncie, one of the activists who was arrested, accused the Navy of throwing explosives into the sea in order to destabilize the boats. Radio Netherlands also reported claims that two fishermen have been killed and at least four others wounded. The IDF denied the claims.
Getting news from Gaza on these events remains difficult. As The New York Times noted today, Israel continues to ban journalists from entering Gaza, a move explained by the Israeli Defense Ministry with the coments:
“The decision is not directed against journalists,” Mr. Dror said. “The situation in Gaza is clear — there is daily firing, we have information about possible attacks on the crossings, and we are limiting our activity there as much as possible.”
With that, Mr. Dror added that he was not “shedding tears” over the journalists’ frustration, saying that Israel in any case considered much of their previous coverage from Gaza unfair.
I suspect the people of Gaza are having trouble believing Olmert’s assurance yesterday to Abbas that “he would not permit a humanitarian crisis to develop” in Gaza.
Youtube - Palestinian rap group DAM, Da Arab MC‘s "reated this music video about the life of Palestinians in Israel. They’re from Lod, a town between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, so they’re Palestinians with Israeli citizenship (often called "Israeli Arabs"). They usually rap in Arabic, but they made a Hebrew version of this song with a music video to get their message out to the majority of Israelis who don’t speak Arabic. "

Pimpster!
Sorry Siun, I should have looked at the topic before making a joke.
This is outrageous.
A good reason to read first … learned here by sad experience ;->
jhfc – with friends like this….
would someone please remind me why we’re behind Israel 100% of the time, no questions asked?
*spit*
Israel is in serious need of regime change.
With U.S supported Israeli aggression against civilian populations, the political leadership of both must be charged with crimes against the peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity. If Milosevic had to answer, so must these, even if it takes decades to accomplish. NO MORE ASSASSINATIONS
That is the short version of what Ahmedinijad said.
Remember how the conservatives came into power there? Sharon went to the Temple, triggering a Palestinian uprising. Then the Israeli people voted him in because he was “tough on terror”. Sound familiar?
Here is to Lieberman becoming the public face in the US of the defeat of Zionism.
Uesireeebob. Most of us recognize the pattern. And we are not amused.
I know ;) but hey! I agree!
We don’t need diplomats to settle the Middle East problems, we need psychotherapists for all sides….everybody on every side has a skewed take on reality. That’s why everyone always says, “it’s so complex”. The patients are in control of the asylum.
They did it as a show of support for Joe. Also.
Wassitz name (Chuck Todd) on msnbc completely misunderstands liberal blogoshere. Thinks we’ll all sink into the sands.
Maybe Obama can ask Joe Lieberman for some pointers on what’s right in this situation. Bipartisanship and all that.
Um, no. Therapy for Israels. When they come to recognize reality, we can then decide whether Palistinians are delusional. Stop with the false psychological equivalency already.
As Mrs. Pierce(US History teacher) once told me:
History is full of examples of the oppressed becoming the oppressor.
-G
Huh? You mean Lieberman is NOT shadow prez? Coudda fooled me.
How else would one learn?
Yeah, it’s sort of like abused children who grow up to be abusers.
I agree that there’s blood on both sides hands, but, the brunt of the hostilities is clearly borne by the Palestinians… 8-(

That would be the same WhattheFuckChuck who refused for months to move his election prediction from 248 solid electoral votes for Obama in spite of what every freakin’ poll in the entire nation was showing?
Huh? Back in the good ole days, the ratio was 1:3, i.e one dead innocent Israeli for every 3 dead innocent Palestinians. That was about 2003. Now it’s maybe 1:10 or 1:100. How do you figure the Palestinians are the provocateurs?
He’s sooo on top of things…
We all know if it were Israel getting treated as badly as Arab Palestine and Gaza have been at the hand of the Israelis the howls of outrage over such inhumane and brutal conduct would be heard loudly over and over.
This is what makes Israel so pathetic. Israelis like to wallow in Jewish victimhood to great lenghts and yet are fully comfortable with inflicting suffering, humiliation and plain simple evil on Arab Palestine/Gaza with little hesitation or seldom shown remorse.
Just who are the victims here? Who are the monsters here?
Why is WashingtonDC so incredibly blind to the human tragedy taking place in Arab Palestine and Gaza?
American conduct in this long running disgraceful saga is beyond pathetic.
Oh yes. I suddenly understand. It’s the NEnglaners fault for dumping the tea into Boston harbor. Slaughted them all.
M’dear, reread what I wrote…! I said they bore the brunt…!
Why is WashingtonDC so incredibly blind to the human tragedy taking place in Arab Palestine and Gaza?
1. $$$$$
2. Votes
That’s the exact analogy. The NEnglanders bore the brunt of the disobedience to the British occupation, so the Brits had every right to starve them to death. After all, the Brits were not the instigators.
Digg
My comment at 13 is clearly not supportive of Israel or anyone else. We have a situation where an entire population was nearly destroyed in Europe by unspeakable methods, who were then placed on lands belonging to others, which provoked violence by the others…who then became displaced and rebelled violently, and then those who were victims of the actions of a European country…ended up taking it out on people living in the lands that they moved to. There are serious psychological wounds being expressed on all sides. That history is still unfolding and forever raw.
Well said, LS. ;-)
OT-Alaska called for Begich.
Ribbit.
Kewl. At least Sarah’s now out of that running.
Apparently, you’re misinterpreting what I meant…
That’s the best part. That woman needs to disappear from the scene. Even the republicans are embarrassed.
Next thing we know McCain will admit his mistake. (And he’s recruiting Lieberman to work for him in Arizona…)
Must be.
Thanks Neuro- given how little coverage of Gaza happens out here, I really appreciate the Digg!
Hear, HEAR!!!
AIPAC
It will be interesting to see how long the Religious Right wing of the R’s will be able to keep her propped up. The Stevens defeat has now ruined a big chunk of her devious plans.
and all those who hold dual American/Isreali citizenship.
MSNBC points out that the massive net amounts US sends to Alaska will diminish but not disappear.
Bwahahahhaha. Assumes Begich is not a whore. But I suppose he couldn’t be as big a whore as Stevens owing to lack of seniority.
OT again, Siun, Mohammed hurt my feelings. He said I would never be welcome to visit Iraq.
Shouldn’t we demand to see the legal documentation of Rahm’s renouncement of his Israeli citizenship? Oh shit, it’s too late. Accountability moment has passed.
when I first read that I thought it said “owing to lack of senility”
Two big hat tips to AIP*C by Obama in two weeks. Rahm and Liebershit. Will Obama ever find his inner Muslim? Seriously, is there any there there?
I still hope for an introspective Obama. Its 2 and 0 against already.
Someone should ask, “Who cares?” If Israelis and Palestinians don’t answer, then we will know what is most important. Whether someone in Washington cares isn’t nearly as important.
Build the wall!
So the kill ratio is how you determine provocation?
i resemble that remark. i hold dual citizenship and am completely against what israel is doing. and i have complained about it to my congressman, lloyd doggett. his support of the israeli wall is the only issue i’ve disagreed with him about. unfortunately for me, the two citizenships i hold are of the two pariah nations of the world israel and the u.s. i’m not proud of it, but that’s the way it is. and i do nothing to encourage anyone to help israel to continue with this travesty. and i do nothing to encourage anyone to help our government continue its travesties. thanks for listening.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on Oct. 3/01:
At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying “everytime we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. I want to tell you something very clear, don’t worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it”.

Israel has got to be the STUPIDEST COUNTRY! They should just honor the cease fire and let the Palestinians go back to what Arabs do best. Namely steal and kill each other.
