ah, but talking points memo pours a little water on this fire;

An odd report out of South Texas where a Willacy County grand jury has apparently indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. But this doesn’t look like the comeuppance so many have hoped for. I can’t piece together from the news reports what the precise allegations are but they don’t seem to implicate Cheney or Gonzales directly in any wrongdoing. In fact a little googling shows the district attorney down there has been embroiled in one controversy after another, including getting arrested himself at one point, though he was later cleared. So this one may be entertaining but not for the reasons the headlines might suggest.

I hope this is just the beginning!

This bipartisan post partisan world is the only thing that can save the Republic from the criminals in the Republican party. Thanks. I’ve updated my diary over at Oxdown to include references to RevDeb’s comment, which came before the diaries perris and I originally wrote, as well as to Ian’s diary here and a link to his video indicating that this story has enough teeth to pull two judges off their benches for the time being. But the indictments have still not yet been released, so we cannot yet see exactly what Cheney has been charged with– yet. It won’t be long, however, before we know. And LHP has promised to look into the charges and give us her appraisal…

These are STATE charges, not Federal. IIRC, Bush can only pardon for Federal offenses.

I think you have to be found guilty to get a pardon. No way that will happen before January.

Except that Ford pardoned Nixon’s offenses before he could be found guilty. That kind of prospective pardon has not been tested in court, however.

This just in from local Texas Channel 5 update says that

The jury asks the people named in the indictments to be summoned to court, which means the Vice President won’t be arrested.

The article adds,

According to Cheney’s indictment, the Vice President is specifically accused of investing some $85 million in the Vanguard group that houses federal inmates. The grand jury accuses Cheney and Alberto Gonzalez of engaging in organized criminal activity.

If this is a reference to the indictment itself, it is the first notice that the indictment has been released to the public.
