The thing I find so heartening after the GOP’s latest electoral humiliation is they still have no freaking clue why they keep losing elections. Check out Newt and Bobby on "Face the Nation" this morning.
Jindal begins by pinning their losses on "out of control spending." Really? If Bush’s record deficits produced universal healthcare, an upgraded infrastructure, won both wars, addressed the energy crisis, and improved most people in the middle’s finances, does anyone seriously think the Republicans would be getting their asses handed to them? Didn’t think so.
It was also great to hear Gingrich call Palin "a real asset to the Republican party" even though all objective polling indicates otherwise.
But the highlight is watching these two Blame Bush For Everything, as though Bush didn’t faithfully execute every right-wing policy he could get his hands on over the past 8 years. Now that their tax cuts-and-invasions-fix-everything mantra has been exposed as a disaster, they’ve got no choice but to just fob the whole mess off on W’s incompetence.
And of course, Obama won because he’s a "Reaganite."
Just too good.

If I have to hear Palin say “also” one.more.time……. just might go postal….
Would love a week where I don’t have to hear about her, hear her voice…… or some video played on some program……. GO AWAY Sarah YOU LOST….
I agree. Another aspect of the schadenfreudefest is watching R contract Bush Derangement Syndrome. I’ve had it for so long, I loooove that the Rs are getting it.
Yes, they can’t figure out what’s gone wrong. That’s because their political, foreign policy, & economic policy are matters of belief, and not subject to evidence. In fact, that makes them want to double down: we just didn’t do it hard enough is a frequently heard refrain.
i like it. what would snl do without her. i’d like clinton to have to run againts her in 12. bama lets go with one term. that is the only way hillary will take sos, imo.
Bobby Jindal can go f himself. He has to. He won’t touch women and men won’t have anything to do with him. Closet much, Bobby?
And Newt? Don’t even get me started.
How did a crazy person like Jindal become the great white hope? Oh, yea. Louisiana.
Exorcism is the only way to deal with these people.
I prefer the wood stake myself.
The battle of the “also” against the “ya know.”
Is that right that Jindal won’t touch women? What’s that all about?
you not a clinton supporter? be honest now.
‘Bobby Jindal may well know more about health care policy than any elected official in America’. Does Gingrich have some explanation for that statement other than his endless ability to blow it out his ass?
No, I’m not a Hillary supporter, but her constant use of “ya know” drives me nuts above & beyond my dislike of her policies. I’ve sent her several emails on the subject, to no avail. (I also sent W an email about “evildoers, after which he stopped saying it, but my email to him about nukular was ineffective.)
According to : http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110004134
“He became the head of the state’s health-care system at age 24, director of the Breaux-Thomas national commission on Medicare at 26, president of the University of Louisiana system at 27, and a top adviser on health policy to President Bush at 29.”
From his wiki
I’ll just be glad once he vacates the premises
You mean the nukular evildoer? I’m holding my breath. *g*
he does have some trouble with his speech don’t he? i don’t care for her either. BUT, what do you think she could learn with 4 years as sos. would that be good for her IF bama only does 4?
doesn’t he have some brush to clear?
It is rumored that he is gay. He performed an exorcism on an old college girlfriend when she wanted to have sex with him. (there is a joke in there some where)
Don’t accept your premise on O going only 4. The only way that’ll happen is if the Ds make matters worse, in which case our next prez might be Jindal (or name your poison).
Madeline Albright learned as SOS that it’s OK to kill a half milliion Iraqi children to keep Saddam Hussein in a box. There’s no telling what experience can do for you.
when W ran for tx governor he was not nearly so incoherent.
I know that doesn’t prove he isn’t gay, but still.
In any event, he certainly seems to have an odd side. Also according to his wiki
Covering all his bases, looks like.
Yes, I used to wonder about that. Any hypotheses on what happened?

Goopers are on the ropes- but they have a way of getting back on their feet. Dems need to get some things done QUICKLY.
1) Health Care—-80% of health care dollars are spent on 10% or less of patients…Medicare should provide catastrophic coverage to ALL americans- and charge the actual cost of the coverage. It should kick in after say $25,000 in annual expense. Private insurance could then concentrate on filling in the gap- with a variety of creative options- but they cannot be allowed to deny coverage or raise rates based on health. I think that most of the health care industry and stake holders would support this move- and it would put govt. in a position to control costs on the small number of cases that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars..
2) Economy- the problems with the economy were triggered by the housing market and probably won’t go away until that market stabilizes. The goal is to cut the number of bank owned properties coming onto the market by 50% or more….by giving property owners EQUITY again. This could be done without much expense:
-Banks should be allowed to renegotiate loans with the principle going down to 90% of current market value and the rate to 5%. The bank would, however, share in future value growth 50-50 up to the amount of the loan reduction….banks would have a way of getting their losses back and hold some value on their books. Homeowners would have lower payments and a reason to stay in their homes….the govt. would guarantee the loans at the new level as a sweetener to encourage the banks to act.
Energy- The problem with solar installations is the upfront cost..Govt. needs to supply low interest 10 year loans to those who want to install solar—provided that the rates being charged are a bit below market per Kilowatt. Govt. should also provide a $5,000 tax credit for buying qualified cars- those that retail for less than $20,000 and get 50 mpg or better..
Three bills to get through congress in the first 6 months would set the stage for a successful first term.
How suppressed was republican turnout this year? How many votes did Bob Barr and Ron Paul end up with? Newt and Bobby might be trying to clarify some of what that small subset of republicans were expressing with their protest votes. Fiscal conservativism does still have a constituency, and Bush was a signal failure at fiscal responsibility. The even bigger deficits that will be needed to get out of this mess will cause some decline in our standard of living, and they are getting out in front of this, setting up some future demogoguery.
Did the Republicans get their asses handed to them? It seems to me we should be doing some analysis of the contested house races – how big were the margins of victory? Did the democratic party candidate run as a progressive or more as a blue dog? How big were the swings in vote? What happened in state legislative races in those districts? A very quick perusal of house race results suggests that close races were pretty common even with coat-tails.
For the next two years Democrats have control of the Congress and the Presidency. With luck, hard work and engagement by progressives that may continue past Obama’s reelection. I think the luck would best be shown by the economy markedly improving by spring 2010. Some of that will be luck we make for ourselves by deficit spending for infrastructure, and I hope by making healthcare a lower part of GDP (and making a big chunk of the insurance industry less profitable).
Calling Palin an asset to the Republicans strikes me as courtesy. Newt can recognize that she’s likely to flame out on her own while giving the 26% a hat tip that he still luvs him some hard core social conservatives. In some ways that h/t gives the 26%ers a place to waste their energy. We shouldn’t hope that what Republicans are saying right now is what they’ll be promoting as candidates in 2010, contrary to popular prejudice there are Republicans that are intelligent and can politic on something besides character smears. Smart Republicans (not an oxymoron in 2010?) will be focus grouping indeps and less rabid 26%ers to come up with salable policy alternatives.
bama will be drunk with power after 4? i hope not. better to bring someone up and step aside. better for the party, i mean.
I don’t know that the southern baptist would accept him. After all, he IS catholic *g*
i don’t see that happening
more a guess than anything.. but for what it’s worth, i see it like the crawford “ranch” – something invented for the marketing strategy we call political campaigns.
Souder (R-IN) takes opportunity of hedge fund hearings to scold Soros about his work on illegal drugs (needle exchange, etc). When Waxman warned at the beginning about going OT, I wondered WTF he was talking about. Now I know.
yup, that’s bc he was talkin to fellow shitkickers. much more comfortable in that area. when’s the last time you seen the guy in boots in DC? he’s like a fish out of water. needs to go back real soon.
Don’t see how having hillary as pres after 4 years is a good thing.
He’s already drunk with power. No one who isn’t runs for prez.
what not drunk or only 4?
Those are both great ideas. It is a good compromise and fair.
Maybe.
My guess is booz or blow.
But we’ll never know.
both and hillary being pres *spit*
i’m thinkin he is the exception. just got this feeling that he is a lot more normal than many give him credit. we’ll see.
Re banks renegotiating.
It’s in their economic interest. An orderly workout of housing distress will result in a smaller decline in home prices than fire sales.
or both?
okay, just floatin an idea. IF bama says to clinton i’m gone after 4 then that is the ONLY way i see her taking the sos. IF it was even offered.
good guesses. maybe both?
Or all of the above.
Shame on us for talking trash about our beloved prez. /s
What makes you think he would step down after 4 years?
I feel that Obama has a huge ego, a huge, stable ego.
You owe wobbly a coke.
*snort* yes, shame on us.
I’ll take a nice herbal tea
brings the party together? maybe she moderates in the next 4?
you would have to have an ego to want to be pres, don’t you think? I agree that he is stable and even tempered. We haven’t seen that around these parts for a while
Would you like a slice of (cake mix) angel food cake to go with that? Say yes before I eat the whole thing myself.
Party isn’t THAT fractured.
Its twue.
brings the party together? did I miss the memo that stated the party is still split? Are you sure that isn’t just your dream?
he is a decent man who has a family. i believe he is a reluctant candidate. AND i also believe this will not be his lifes work.
Any Illinoisers here? What’s the betting on Obama’s senate replacement?
umm okay. I don’t want to be responsible for you eating the whole thing. *g*
if you don’t mind, I’ll wait for a few years before speculating
The GOP is not a political party anymore, it is a sitcom with only Archie Bunkers.
If that is the case, why run in the first place. No one runs to be a one term president.
newt is like spam (the meat).
it never goes bad till you open the can and it comes out when there is a (gooper) recession in talent, ideas and energy.
i prefer to characterize it as an observation. 47 % did not vote for bama. i believe some people are still mighty pissed.
take yo time. :)
no one until now, imo.
Are you referring to the election or the primaries? What makes you think that they would vote for Clinton? I mean my parents didn’t vote for bush but that didn’t mean anything Bush still has served two terms.
surely some enterprising soul has come out with a sarah-doll by now.
send one to each of those panting old coots.
mebbe they’ll succumb to the vapours and have to retire to the fainting couch.
SOMETHING’s awesome all righty. whoopee….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
okay. I don’t think he is going to step down after one term but if you want Hillary in that bad, I suppose hoping is the better than the alternative
Bobblehead is out.
http://www.prlog.org/10134551-…..ction.html
the election saw 47% vote for someone else. Now, with the dimwit @ 25 % or so where are the others?
lol. *love me some Blazing Saddles references*
i don’t want nothin except a dem part that is not fractured so we can do biness.
>>
now there’s a steamin’ cow-patty if i ever read one ..
Seems to me that that is par for the course for most modern day elections. Not sure what you expect a candidate to earn when it is a two party system.
Finally got around to asking hedge fund guys whether they think its fair to pay capital gains (lower) tax rates on their multibillion dollar incomes.
I don’t think we are that fractured and if we are/were, what is the evidence? We have always been a big tent party…has that changed?
my pleasure. glad you liked it.
is that a problem? naw! i knew you be joshin’
thank dog for small favors.
huge controllable ego? (hint/wild guess: if he doesn’t, Michelle and the girls can help remind him, but I doubt it’ll be necessary; more likely to be appreciated)
the jealous little repubbles will just have to watch his dust, unless, perchance, they have the oomph to help save the nation and the world. eh?
rhetorical question, right?
oh goodie. made in………
China?
lead paint?
loose parts that could fall off and poison the dawg?
not expectin nothin. this is not a mandate all i am sayin. got to get more votes somehow. can’t do anything worth doing if we have to undo every damn thing every 4-8 years.
To be sure, but they’re on the record with their ridiculous answers. And under oath.
sold at walmart, right? It is the headquarters for cheap plastic crap from China that will kill you
you think the votes we have are okay. fine. i think that this is just the begining of somethin. either that or it’s nothin.
oh now that’s just cruel! heeheeheeheeheehee
on the bobbleheads website or ebay
guess it depends on one’s definition of mandate. A 6% point difference is a mandate for some people and for others, it isn’t. I’m just glad he is the next pres and not McCain. That makes me wake up every morning with a smaller frown on my face.
It’s Sarah’s effect on the crowds — how big they were, how vocal, how entranced — that has the old GOPs wondering how to replicate them without, you know, actually having Sarah there. They created a monster, the wingnut crowds will only come out for Sarah. Remember when McCain had to campaign with HER in order to get anyone to talk to? They ALL want to campaign with her, but none of them want her to be the nominee.
Sarah will fool them all — she’ll get all those folks to come out and vote in the 2012 primaries, you betcha. The showdown is between her and Huckabee. No more thinking allowed in the GOP, sorry Newt. Not even stupid evil thinking will be permitted, like he specializes in. It’s Theocracy all the way.
I think that we have coalition that has to be built upon but I don’t see where Hillary as pres fits in there.
we agree got to go.
How long before they are offered at my local CVS drug store?
Here hon. *passes cool face-towel thru the toobz*
Apparently Jindal hasn’t been the least bit successful being the most informed health care politician in the nation.
Limited edition of 100 each (Sarah & Joe). $65 on ebay.
Ah, “The Losing VP Bobblehead Collection”. Got it.
most intriguing, ain’t it, instant “fame” (limited edition), enduring longer than 15 min. ONLY in the minds of elderly repubble males & fans of hilarious comedy routines.
Ladies and gents, we have a winner!
but….
What was the question again?
oh, joe too?
hold it a sec.
i need to re-run some figures here.
eeeewwwwww
oh, collectors stuff.
i can think of many things to do with those dolls but all would leave the environment worse off than before
Don’t know about that. There are several holes they could be stuffed in, leaving the world a better place.
hi WB
the world as a whole, yes. But as these things will never disintegrate, their nastiness will linger on
hey Raven
how are you?
Some one on the hedge fund hearings distinguished between volatility & uncertainty. All of a sudden, a whole bunch of stuff became clear to me that wasn’t before. Volatility is backward looking, uncertainty looks ahead. Protection against volatility can be completely divorced from protection against uncertainty if an ahistoric event occurs.
yes. limited in every sense of the word
limited to the power of % plus diminished fifth, augmented second in 12-tone mode glossed amply with ornamentation from French-style baroque, in triplicate. Preferably chiffonade. Lemon reduction with essence of late summer tundra. served in halved
pineappletundra patty. paper umbrella speared through stuffed, green olive-like object. Canned whipped topping over all. Side of minced spam.wtf?
don’t forget the pepto bismo chaser
huh?
um.
u stopped my laughing, but now i’ve got the hiccups.
How can they sit there in public, before all the world, and do that stuff?!
I definitely think we need you back in harness to smack them senseless.
jmho
coke please.
Giuliani says he might right for NY Governor….. that would be interesting….
i was hoping to surprise them, heh.
i don’t remember them offering US any!?!
“I definitely think we need you back in harness to smack them senseless.”
I think they have to be in the harness for her to smack them senseless. ;)
perectly clear to me. don’t know what folks are fussin about.
I would love to see that nimrod beaten again.
okkee dokkeee, U?
wei wu wei
they’d probably enjoy it. yuck.
it’s harder to cower in a harness. people tend to tie u to something.
mebbe we could ground-tie them with a big lead weight. i’d like ta see newt galloping along, leather straps a-flying, lead weight round and round till….. it encounters something solid.
OK. I’ll try to explain volatility. It’s basically the standard deviation of whatever the underlying item is. For example, the standard deviation of the Dow. Because it is a measured statistic, it is by nature backward looking. In other words, you use the history of the data to calculate its standard deviation. There are actually constructed financial instruments you can buy/sell on volatility. So, for example, if you think the period ahead will be more volatile than history, you go long volatility.
Uncertainty is a word used to describe the fact that you don’t know what will happen in a much more fundamental way. So when an ahistoric event occurs, like a housing price bubble burst, the historic statistics are useless.
I think that many people confused the two items, and thought that going long volatility would protect them if the market did crazy things. But it didn’t.
ice or no ice? *g*
Not a perfect analogy, but Cory Aquino was elected with the intent of serving only one term.
Another imperfect analogy, Nelson Mandela.
[gingrich] “Obama promised a middle class tax cut…that was a Reaganite postion”
bullcrap, that was a reaganite promise, what he delivered was the greatest tax increase on the middle class in the history of peacetime presidents
what he did was shift the tax burdon onto the middle class
true. let them suffer as we have
Running against a blind man? Can’t wait to see the negative campaign Guiliani will run. BTW he chickened out of running for senate against Hillary. Guess he thinks a blind man is a weaker opponent than a woman.
Hi Raven. Nice to see ya.
I think we’re making tundra goulash with a side of walstweet here.
Want some?
Stirling Newberry upstairs
But we are talking american president. I have a hard time believing anyone running in modern era would only run for one term
hey all…. is it safe to come out noww? jus askin lol… after 8 years of bushco and neocon shenanigans…. why are these people still being given any airtime???? i’m waiting for some perp walks!!!!
battling with an upper respiratory infection.
I luvs it when u reach for your prof. hat. Thanks ;->
I saw that on your FB, you getting smoke down there?
wow.
yikes. i just finished puttin’ up a “make nice” diary.
oh well. equal and opposite it ’tis.
Oh yeah pretty bad. The AQMD (Air Quality management district) has declared pretty much the whole area as unhealthy. So we have closed up all the windows . ash is everywhere.
To be blunt, I’m doing it for myself. Its like writing the report after you do the research, learning much more & cementing the knowledge in the writing process. *g*
Oh, and since there’s so many smart people here, if I get it wrong someone will let me know, so I don’t labor under false knowledge.
Aw, that’s nice. I once had a grandmother in-law who came from Budapest. I made her Chicken Paprikash and she loved me for ever.
I like to view it as giving them enough rope….. eh?
Don’t know if I’m ready to make nice
The Alabama King Snake “Serves Me Right to Suffer”
ever notice, Grinch just can’t STAND to let anything be, unless he owneth it.
that brings a thot to the fore.
mebbe we should see to it that he does admit ownership of a few things he’d no doubt like everyone to forget.
i’m not sure i have the stomach for it though.
i vote we make him and sarah hold hands crossing the street. I think I could guarantee both would run screeming into the showers before half-time.
ask the little fat fuck what he was doing during Vietnam?
I lied. Take a look at it. It’s one-a those ‘eye of the beholder’ thingies, i suspect.
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/1791
nuttin’ as I recall. Do I get an “A” ?
close enough!
If you have published, I’d buy. no snark.
yeah – point taken ;o)
In 1985, he told Jane Mayer of The Wall Street Journal that he still believed that “Vietnam was the right battlefield at the right time.” Why didn’t he go? “Given everything I believe in, a large part of me thinks I should have gone over,” he allowed. But, recovering, he added, “Part of the question I had to ask myself was what difference I would have made.”
I know it’s old and corny, but
Thank You for your service, Raven. ;->
we thot, never again, didn’t we. oh dog.
Answer, he could have talked Ho to death.
I was listening to Andy Rooney while we drove through the mountains Vets Day. He said, “I don’t really like all this Vets Day stuff. We served, we got a free country. That’s all I need”.
mebbe, just mebbe, they can’t win if we use everylittlething they “give” us, the way WE want to, most certainly NOT the way they intended.
Did you ever read Mike Royko’s Veteran’s Day column?
He always made sense with that one.
i was thinking more along the lines of painting a big fat target on ‘im.
but i kinda pacifist-ish, so, even newter….
wait, mebbe…. *smack!*
Just did , I like it but this is bullshit”
They all said the same thing: working.
Me, too.
There is something else we share. We are all military veterans.
And there is a third thing we have in common. We are not employees of the federal government, state government, county government, municipal government, the Postal Service, the courts, banks, or S & Ls, and we don’t teach school.
If we did, we would be among the many millions of people who will spend Monday goofing off.
In years at both the University of Illinois and the University of Georgia I have never had a Veterans Day off without taking annual leave.
dull deer antler
Well, he did have his hot-button issues that reality didn’t always get in the way of. But overall, I did like his proposals for how Veterans should be treated and allowed to spend Veteran’s Day.
roger that
hard dick and bubble gum as they say
Hard for me to get excited about that. It’s sort of a no-brainer. What does newter have to do to make that happen?! Sounds more as if he’s using veterans, pandering, seeking votes rather than honoring their service. ymmv i’m a jaded old thing. newter firmly in my can’tstandem file.
I was talking about Mike Royko’s proposal for how veterans should be allowed to spend Veteran’s Day. Nothing to do with Newt.
The GOPers have to blame somebody for their policy failures, only they all were complicit voting with the Bush policies for the eight years, so blaming him now is very lame and won’t fly with the public. They are just biding time until they can blame Obama for everything.
“In 1996 Republican Governor Foster appointed Jindal to be secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals…”
[BTW this was the same Mike Foster that purchased the KKK mailing list from David Duke
“….In 1998, Jindal was appointed [by Foster] executive director of the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare, a 17-member panel charged with devising plans to
Medicare.”
In 1999 Jindal was appointed [by Foster] to become the youngest-ever president of the University of Louisiana System. In March 2001 he was nominated by President George W. Bush to be Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Planning and Evaluation.”
Yep! Not one bit of evidence that the fellow has accomplished a damn thing on his own merits, other than being a sychophantic politician.
He apparently went along with Fosters’ plan to rescind the law requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets…something that almost all physicians agree has had a major impact in reducing paralyzing head and neck injuries.
And then there is the whole idea that driving demons out of people constitutes a valid medical application. Sure it would reduce medical costs, unless of course one could apply “exorcism treatment” from ones insurance. Of course, it would likely get the religious right all happy…as another faith-based initiative to line their pockets with Federal tax dollars.
I agree. I’d say that one clue that an individual’s ego is fractured in some way would be repeated unsuccessful runs for a political office. It’s either the thrill of the campaign or the attention that they seek. Or perhaps the thought that they “can’t lose”…and have to try again. Gingrich, I suspect, fills that category…as did McCain. If one runs for a position more than twice that suggests that there is something else involved. They haven’t moved on into another emotionally fulfilling career and think that THEY and only they are able to take on the position.
Look at the numbers and % of victorious votes/electoral votes in previous elections. Bush certainly never achieved these proportions. And neither did Clinton in his first election (and he won a second term). Reagan didn’t his first election (and he won a second term). Neither did Carter. You’d have to go back to LBJ…who rode in on the coattails of Kennedy and a strongly sympathetic nation…to find such a strong victory a first term President.
Gingrinch/Palin 2012!
Apologies and agreement with your initial comment. Absolutely!
Per Roseanne Roseannadana of Laugh-In: “Nevermind!” *blush*
