As Political Base points out, Mark Begich’s current margin of victory in the Alaska Senate race (1,022 votes) is dwarfed by the 12,000 votes cast for the Alaska Independence Party candidate.
Given that the Alaska Independence Party are on the right-wing survivalist end of the political spectrum, that pretty much makes Bob Bird the gun-toting separatist version of Ralph Nader – only more popular.
And lest anyone forget, this is the same party that Todd Palin belonged to for several years, and the same party that Sarah Palin gave her warm video pep talk to this year. I wonder if that encouragement helped inspire them to that lofty vote total. Who knows, maybe even Sarah Palin herself voted for the AIP candidate, rather than cast a vote for a convicted felon or a Democrat.
It would be irresponsible not to speculate.

Well, it’s nice to see that the Palins did their part.
Well, Sarah *did* talk about putting partisanship aside to help President Obama…
One thing that would be interesting to find out would be exactly WHERE those Independence Party votes were concentrated..or IF they were concentrated at all. Are we talking about folks who do not live in the major urbanized areas?
Makes you wonder if the AIP illegally registered fake voters and cast ballots for these fake people on election day? Oh wait. AIP is not ACORN! My mistake. But they are a right wing group….*pouring more coffee*…and right wing groups are known to do illegal stuff.
has Todd given his underwear back yet?
Okay, I’ll do my part. I speculate that Todd cast at least 5000 of those AIP votes all by himself.
…and right wing groups are known to do illegal stuff.
hey – that’s just a vicious rumor put out by fascist, communist, dictator-lovin’, gun-hatin’ Democrats!
Honestly, I think Sarah Palin wrote her own name in on her ballot. I mean, really, why would she vote for anyone else but herself? She’s very narcissist.
Ooops! Sorry! My mistake. ;-)
Kay…. to respond to your question last night….. It hasn’t been a secret here that my follow up CT scans and lung biopsy showed that my kidney cancer has spread to my lungs (yes that is both)…… I am being admitted tomorrow to the Telemetry unit to have 7 days of Interlukin therapy – immunotherapy which stimulates my immune system to become packman and destroy the cancer…….
I’m fine…… the drug has serious side effects and that is why I have to be monitored but once they stop it then they go away……. I don’t loose my hair and that is good since I just spent $45 bucks for a cut …….
Now back to your regular programming and Sorry Eli…… once is kind of ok but twice stinks….
All fingers and toes crossed here, katy.
Don’t worry about it, really.
Good gawd, Katymine. I had no idea you were going through this. My heart is with you wherever you go on this journey…as everyone’s is. You are a strong woman! Wowzer.
Happy about your hair, though. ;-)
Me, I’m just pretty impressed that we’ve somehow beaten the
paradigmrealitymyth that one cannot be both a fascist and a communist at the same time.Who’s the “Big Tent” party, now, bitchez?
Or a Muslim *and* a Likudnik, for that matter.
Good Morning Eli and Firedogs,
mudflats points out something I hadn’t heard yet:
Ron Paul endorsed Byrd – so their tripling of their Senate votes from the last cycle may have something to do with that.
Tried to get county-by-county results but I am pdf challenged
(Or a Muslim and some kind of black Christian separatist)
Exactly. Wait until we teach the morons what socialism is all about and how we’ll laugh at them when they say, “Civil rights are evil! Tax the poor! Feed the rich!”. They’re going to continue to look like the assholes they are. I’m looking forward to it quite frankly.
I wish he would have endorsed Barr, too – but it still worked out okay.
I’m a straight gay man.
Begich got 11-1/2 times the number of votes of the AIP candidate. That’s quite a margin. And if you include Stevens, the combined total is 22 times. Doesn’t seem like AIP has a lot of support.
fun, but it also highlights the point that we really can’t win the next election unless begich can win them over, that is not likely
democrats might be a one term wonder in alaska
We’re all gonna be thinking of and pulling for you.
Attitude enhancer:
Yea though I walk through the shadow of the Valley of Death I will fear no evil, cuz I’m the meanest, baddest *insert your favourite expletive here* in the Valley.
Yea though I walk through the shadow of the Valley of Death I will fear no evil, cuz I’m the meanest, baddest *insert your favourite expletive here* in the Valley.
what he said, katymine.
It *is* a pretty red state. But if they like the job he does over the next six years, and/or the Republicans can’t field a strong challenger, he could repeat. But even if he doesn’t, that’s one extra, unexpected Democratic senator for the next six years.
Just click on the Get Adobe Reader logo and it will take you to Adobe, click on the download link and it self installs. Once it’s installed it opens automatically whenever you click on a pdf doc online.
Thanks Eli.
digg
Okay Katymine, here ya go!

Nicely done. ;-)
Katymine, I went here and read about Interleukin therapy (including the link for other pups who might not be familiar with it).
I wish you the best outcome possible. We’ll be rooting for you. You said the hospital has Internet, so keep us updated as much as you are able.
Here is the info on the side effects
(((((HUGGING MS. KATYMINE)))))
You are a brave soul, Katy.
Back to the talking heads issue. T.Boone Pickins is another example. Lot’s more exposure than Gore ever got.
Frank Gaffner is interviewing Bill Gertz on Afterwards on cspan2. It’s a stitch & a half. Just one example: a big mistake that W made is to be too bipartisan, i.e. keeping on liberals like Richard Clarke and appointing liberals like Colin Powell.
Good gawd. Can their lies, deceits, and distortions be any more obvious? Unfreakingbelievable.
The Nazis were putatively a socialist party.
Thanks, Katymine. Here’s hoping you are among those who don’t experience the worst of them. (((Katymine)))
Here’s the latest: Don Rumsfeld was a conservative, but not a Reagan style R. Although DOD policy was focussed around Rumsfeld, he deferred to big govt libruls like Victoria Clark. She scuttled a strategic communications program that was essential to the war on terrorism.
but but but TBone is a Repug….. and Repugs always gets booked first and are more credible……. Don’t ya know?
Ah, so *all* of Dubya’s failures were liberal ones. It’s all so clear to me now…
JHFC, are we gonna be bombarded with more reichwing drivel for the next 4 years? Not only can these clowns not see the forest they can’t see the trees. They’re gonna keep tryin’ to put that square peg in a round hole forever.
That’s why I’m listening. Gotta figures out the memes early on so you can counter them.
Oh yes. None of the Reagan Crazies were ever a part of the Bush Regime today. I see the pattern happening and it will be our duty to continue to point out for the next 4 years that what happened during the Regime was hashed out years ago. Of course, we’ve done this for years now, but with a-holes such as Rush saying things like, “Obama recession”, we’ve got our work cut out for us.
One thing all the segments of the Rs have in common is Reagan envy.
Well, technically, Rummy was a *Nixon* crazy.
Betcha the Republicans won’t shut up about Clintonites in the Obama administration, and heaven help Obama if he hires someone from the Carter era…
Grover has been misguided in his notion of “Muslim outreach.” Gertz. Gaffney ups the ante by saying that Grover has actually joined forces with Islamist groups.
Not they’re getting Gates on the rack.
The wingers are going to try to blame Barack Obama for the past 8-29 years of right wing madness, but will the wingers be able to explain why the former right wing crazy DOD, Donald Rumsfeld, why Rummy isn’t allowed to step foot in the country of Germany without being arrested for war crimes?
http://www.democracynow.org/20…..in_germany
It’s Barack’s fault that Rummy is who he is? Sorry pals! We’re gonna remind Americans how criminal the right wingers have been in government for decades now!
Warren Christopher? (Walked by him sitting in First Class while boarding a plane once. Tells you how much I need a life when I recognize federal bureaucrats but not actors or singers or ball players.)
True. Rummy & Cheney started their conspiring under Nixon.
Oh now Gertz is saying that the W admin did not interrogate terrorists hard enuf.
No no no, it’s *Clinton’s* fault, and Obama is his pawn.
I’ve always had the perception that the neocons lived in Republican “think” tanks and occasionally held minor positions in prior Republican Administrations, where they were viewed primarily as crackpots with occasional out-of-the-box ingenious ideas. It seemed to take the perfect storm of an igotistical idiot figurehead President, and powermad, crazed VP to put them in positions of real influence. Hopefully, the set of circumstances which allowed them to wreak havoc will not exist again for a long time. Still, I’m amazed that they are still interviewed and their publications are taken seriously.
Makes one wonder just what it takes for a conservative to be discredited. Being consistently wrong about everything all the time just isn’t enough.
I did the same thing with Jim Wright and Dale Bumpers (Bumpers in coach), so I take your point.
Come to think of it, speaking out against other conservatives (i.e., being right about something) seems to work pretty well…
Paulson & Bolton (Josh) on the rack now. Their problem is they made money doing business with China while at Goldman Sachs. (Gertz’s problem with China policy is that China is U.S. enemy, or so he sez. Hasn’t said when he wants the bombing to begin to institute “democracy promotion.”)
OMG, you’re worse than me. I wouldn’t recognize them.
I did sit next to former Senator D’Amato on a Friday afternoon shuttle from DC to NYC. It was one of the best conversations I’ve ever had.
Huh. Can you elaborate a bit?
Wright’s eyebrows hooked my elbows as I squeezed by.
Now think of it….. Delay is indicted and STILL gets on the talking head shows….. now John Edwards has an affair or Spitzer gets charged but dropped and poof they are forever banned from TeeVee……..
What chaps my hide is that every time I see Delay he is treated as a creditable source AND NO ONE mentions that HE is under indictment for real CRIMES……
Elmore had another airport sighting…… this time it was THE Boner…… waiting at the gate for a flight…… Elmore was trying to see if his hands were as tanned as his face to see if it was a paint on tan or real…….. Elmore’s states he is oily
Oh now Gertz is saying that the W admin did not interrogate terrorists hard enuf.
okay – *now* I’m pissed.
jhfc – what kind of morally bankrupt, reprehensible motherfucker does one have to be to, as of this day, proudly say that “I’m a republican”?
…this time it was THE Boner…… waiting at the gate for a flight……
Was he drunk, and/or crying?
Just stupid.
I was working on Wall St., so I got out some reports from my firm to read. He took the bait & enquired if I worked there. He started out explaining why he was going home early (maybe it was a Thursday afternoon). It was because he was getting sick & had to go do a fundraiser in CA the next week. I asked why a NY sen would be raising funds in CA, and he said: wine industry. I asked him about NYS wine industry and he knew everything about it, including the concept of indirect economic benefits (suppliers to the industry). We talked about the U.S. medical industry (it was in the early 90s and I had already identified its economic problems and written about them). He knew all the stats about Canadian visits to hospitals in Buffalo. Then the person in the window seat (I was in middle) joined the conversation. He imported tropical fish and flew 250,000 miles/year. That led to conversation about pollution in oceans, etc., etc.
More generally, when does anyone get to spend an hour in a one-on-one conversation with a U.S. senator? They really know a tremendous amount, regardless of party (well some of the R wingnuttier ones excepted) and are quick to bring that knowledge to bear in conversation.
I’ve also seen Volcker & Reich in airport waiting rooms, but they are dead giveaways: one’s taller than god and the other’s shorter.
Seems like the AIP and Byrd has a lot of support in the areas outside of Fairbanks (6,7,8) and on the Kenai Peninsula (District 33-34). He was drawing about 600-900 votes in those district precincts compared to a couple of hundred elsewhere. Hard to make judgements about these areas as Stevens did much better than Begich in the latter, but split with him evenly in the former. It’s pretty clear that within the cities, as well as in Mat-Su the AIP doesn’t have a lot of support, though.
“Makes one wonder just what it takes for a conservative to be discredited. Being consistently wrong about everything all the time just isn’t enough.”
Ideology Uber Alles. It’s why they oppose any sort of Scientific Method or Historical or Cultural comparison with their ideas…instead preferring the mantra “we must get back to our principles”…even when those ideas have proven, time and again, to have failed.
And get healthy Katymine! Were all pullin’ for you!
This is where I think the Impeachment powers really should be applied…”post-incumbency impeachment”.
The impeachment provision doesn’t just apply for removing a sitting office-holder…it can be used to prevent individuals from receiving any “position of profit, honor or benefit under the United States”. That could block these individuals from EVER coming back into the government and keep them out of lobbying or jumping into their former beneficiaries that are receiving government contracts.
Thus the threat of impeachment would keep current office-holders honest…and even if a President pardoned his current clutch of goslings they would have a hard time getting jobs with those that might have gotten the public wealth thrown their direction.
Post-incumbency impeachment…a concept whose time has arrived!
you kdding? fiscal rethugs like that think China IS a democracy ;-P.
