As a chairman of one of our significant committees in the Senate, not just going off and supporting a presidential candidate of the other side but also criticizing the candidate on our side, and also involving himself in a couple of senate races on the other side. The question is, is that acceptable? The answer is no.
Dorgan has been tireless in his efforts to root out government waste. The waste, graft and taxpayer looting that Lieberman has protected from investigation as Chair of the Homeland Security Committee no doubt scalds him.
Republican John Kyl, on the other hand, says Lieberman is “a great American” and that the Republicans would “love to have him."
Meanwhile, Chris Dodd says we shouldn’t get sidetracked by partisan bickering. But if Joe wants to go there, we should just give him everything he wants.
In the spirit of bipartisanship, can’t we just make Lieberman a present to the GOP?

I regret my contribution to Dodd. How do you think the secret ballot will play out? Emailed Boxer about a week ago, and have heard nothing back. Very unlike Boxer’s people.
Sure works for me!
I’ll be happy to contribute the ribbon for the box, too.
‘SOK with me.
And so the little trickle becomes the mighty flood…
I would be happy to carry one side of the gurney to take him over to the Rs. I don’t think they could trust him any more than we do. He’s trouble.
How can Sarah Palin find alternative energy when she can’t find a fucking “g”?
Can we wrap him all up in Red paper and stick red ribbons all over him, and leave him on the steps of the Senate for the republicans to find when /if they show up for the next session?
Jane..she’s saving them up to use later…
now there’s a bipartisanship i can support.
If Joe goes to the dark side, it changes nothing. It’s not like the past two years when he actually could have tipped Senate control to the Republicans. Let him go, good riddance.
she knows this is a touchy one. my confidence level is not high in her direction. normally, this would be a slam dunk, if we were talkin bout anyone else but joe.
They’ll just re-gift him back to us once they get to know him better.
“If Joe goes to the dark side..”
He’s already there and has been for a very long time. He’s just been hiding out. The only difference is that now he gets to wear the T shirt that says, “I’m a Rethug” now.
Please Please can we go a week without seeing or hearing from Sarah Palin…… If I have to hear that “also” one more time……
Hi Jane….
[channeling Henny Youngman]Take Joe Lieberman, PLEASE[/channeling Henny Youngman]
They know him and he creeps them out too. Just a symbolic victory to have him in their ranks. Hopefully, they’d dub him Joe the Plunger and put him in charge congressional toilet maintenance.
It’s my hope when Joe LIEberman gets indoctrinated into the republic Party his whole face and body become hairy like a caveman. I promise not to point and laugh at him too! Bah hahahahahaha!
How are you feeling katymine?
Joe Lieberman is, without a doubt, Government Waste.
(((Katymine)))
ot – thanks for the heads up yesterday re CSPAN’s BookTV live coverage from miami. naomi klein and jeremy scahill were terrific and i recorded the panel with hedges and mayer to listen to today.
also, just wanted to make sure that you saw filkins is going to be on at 4pm today, as i’m sure you wouldn’t want to miss that one. /s
I can almost hear that whiney droopy dog voice talking about clogged toilets.
Why is anyone trying to hold onto Lieberman? I can’t figure it out. I especially can’t figure out why — it is reported — or rumored — Obama is working to keep him in his current position(s)? Can anyone shed some light onto the political calculus here? (Or is Obama just sentimental about his mentor? Doesn’t seem likely.)
I’m not one for biting off my nose to spite my face, but in this case I don’t think that saying applies. He’s worthless. Worse than that, he’s a true opponent. On the issues where they truly need his vote (Iraq, Judicial nominees) he’s not with the dems. And everytime the vote is close, he’ll blackmail the dems all over again. Cut. Him. Loose.
PO’ed….. the hospital hasn’t called yet to give instructions….. I feel fine…..
PO’ed that RGJoe might keep his chairmanship…… PO’ed that somehow through TWO, count them TWO Democratic elections…… they still didn’t get a spine transplant
Good question. It’s not just the 60 vote majority because the weasel has already said he doesn’t want the D’s to have that kind of power, so. . .?
How is this creep still getting consideration by the Dems who he campaigned against and trashed. He is in the CT for Liberman party NOT the Democratic party. This is a non issue. He chose to leave the party when he lost to Ned Lamont. The dems sucked up to him for some bizarre reason after he won as a NON democrat.
Dodd is a big disappointment on this as are others like Hillary and Boxer. He’s a turncoat, a not a party loyalist. He can do what he wants but he should not be part of the party. Go blo jo
Thanks Jane.
digg
With his annoying air of moral superiority, treachery, and dishonesty, he belongs in the GOP, and Connecticut will kick his ass out in four years.
We know damn well for the first time in 8 years, Joe LIEberman and Susan Collins will hold REAL hearings against a sitting president…and it won’t be George Bush. It will be against Barack Obama for whatever reason these pull out of their assholes.
Politically, there is no positive reason for Barack to keep LIEberman in an authoritative position. He’s a whiny ass backstabber of enormous proportions and Barack should be keeping in mind that it was LIEberman who went after his patriotism and who basically said Barack would danger our country (in not so many words). I mean, really, this is ONE ENEMY I would not near me!!!
Go with the flow, Joe.
5 white guys on ABC’s This Week are concerned that Obama’s Cabinet may be too white.
Krugman is on, says something stupid about he doesn’t care who is Treasury Secretary, and that Larry Summers insults everyone equally. He does point out that letting the automakers fail would be a major anti-stimulus.
You’re welcome. I listened to the rebroadcast of Hedges et al very early this morning.
Yes, I saw that Filkins is going to be on. I haven’t decided whether I’m going to watch. I’m kinda curious if he treats the audience with the same disdain that he treated us. I’ll bet not. Can’t remember. Was there some challenge early in the thread that might have gotten his nose out of joint?
If someone were to give LIEbermann a going away present, maybe he would just go away, maybe to Tel Aviv if we’re lucky.
*have near me.
More and better Dems. Glad you’re feeling okay.
Yes, one way tickets to Tel Aviv would be a great present along with ripping up his VISA.
Be right back…
what gives Joe his ‘moral superiority”? Because he slammed Clinton on the Lewinsky thing? His behavior in terms of disloyalty etc. c ertainly does not rank as morally superior in my book.
Maybe the GOP could regift Joe like fruitcake.
Who would Joe Lieberman have been in high school?
FWIW, I consider my $150 to Dodd4President in two installments money well spent in the fight to preserve the Constitution. We lost that battle, but it doesn’t mean imho that my money wasn’t well spent.
With that said, I agree, I have been very disappointed in his actions on the bailout and JoeLie. Although I am not a CT resident, I feel a lot freer to call Dodd, because of the money I sent him. When I call, I always remind his office of the donations.
Thank you.
ROFLMAO.
Hey, it’s the off season, how ’bout we do a baseball-style trade? Rethugs take Lie-berman, Dems take Voinovich.
Wiping liquids off monitor.
Happy Hanukkah GOP! Here’s Joe!
Great one.
GOP takes JoeLie for “player to be named later.“
In my high school he would have been Joseph Adler. Same first name is a gift. Both Jewish, both holier-than-thou (Adler is only two years younger). We didn’t talk about Israel way back then, but wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Adler is a big supporter. Oh, and Adler was a gigantic nerd.
but who’s the ‘player to be named later”?
George Will is incensed that GM has retirees that aren’t old enough to qualify for Medicare. I guess he just learned now that some people retire before age 65 or that someone who started working at GM at the age of 21 would have to work 44 years for the company to get to 65. I suppose what surprises me the most is that Will acts shocked, shocked I tell you at simple math.
And they all are saying that tax cuts and healthcare reform should be off the table. Because well you know the economy is in the shitter so things that would raise money or could be done without increasing costs, BAD IDEA. A clue could sit in their laps and they still wouldn’t get it.
Krugman said there wasn’t a dime’s worth of difference philosophically among the Treasury list of names he’s heard so far so if that’s the contenders, it really doesn’t matter which one of ‘em gets appointed. I don’t think that’s stupid, just realistic.
We’ll refuse the delivery. ‘Return to Sender – address unknown’.
Let em try that and they can strip them of their gavels.
Boo said player to be named later. I named Voinovich. Up for election in ‘10? This could be a nice flip.
I thought that was common knowledge. Nothing confers moral superiority on someone like going on at length in a public place about a BJ.
Apparently Krugman has not heard Stiglitz, Bair, or Roubini brought up. If he hasn’t I wonder why he didn’t bring them up himself.
Heh. He should have brought up himself.
Thanks for watching so I don’t have to.
You gonna take in Filkins on Book-TV this afternoon? /s
Loo Hoo: “I regret my contribution to Dodd” Ditto.
Let’s put Lieberman’s fate up to a secret ballot among rank & file Democtrats who contributed to and volunteered for the candidates Joe was shamelessly smearing–ok?
re filkins. i’m sure no one here would ever ask a provocative question. *g*
joking aside, i do plan to listen. he has me kinda curious especially as he seemed to think his perspective was widely accepted (and i have no reason to think otherwise, at least at the nyt). the very nice lds people who came to my door yesterday kinda reminded me of him.
Well, I think the count is up to three now opposing Lieberman. I called both my Senators, Stabenow and Levin. Not that THAT will do any good. Please excuse my cynicism, but after eight years of Bush and spineless democrats I have grown a little disenchanted.
new post upstairs from Siun…
Reggie (Archie comics)
damn. missed krugman. watched tom friedman instead. will have to give the podcast a listen.
And may I say how very proud I am that Byron Dorgan is my Senator.
it’s the small commitee first. that’s the problem.
anyone think boxer or difi might he malleable on this matter?
Obama says keep him, but leaks to the press he won’t take his calls. Lieberman’s can’t harm Obama no matter what he does, chairman or not. Obama knows this so when he says keep him, he gives Lieberman exactly nothing. If anyone deserves to be brought down hard, it’s Lieberman. Don’t know if keeping him one is the new politics or an exercise in futility. Risk for risk, I think I go with Obama and see what happens.
Lieberman is that putzy kid who used to have gum stuck in his hair and who was always getting pantsed in grammar school.
We’ll make Joe a “Happy Chanukah” gift for those Republicans who insist that there is a war on Christmas! He’ll be like a giant Dreidel with only one word written on all the faces “Shin”, “Shin”, “Shin” and “Shin”!
Dorgan also says in that video that Lieberman is a “friend of mine” and a “good American.”
I can’t conclude from that appearance that Dorgan will vote to remove Lieberman from his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.
