Sometimes, there are no words.
Some amazing acoustic guitar to start your day. Sit back, hit play. Enjoy. Feel the stress just slough right out of you.
What’s up in your neck of the woods? Let’s take a little time to catch up with each other and life outside the political sphere. Pull up a chair…

G’morning, Christy and FDLers.
After three weeks in the hospital, including surgery, brother Garry came home with me yesterday. He lost 15 pounds (he was normal weight when he was admitted), but he’s feeling pretty darn good. We almost lost him again. Yikes! He’s a vulnerable adult (mental retardation), but never more vulnerable than when he’s ill.
Cold and windy in my neck of the woods, btw!
Morning, Barbara – hugs to you and brother Garry.
In the 50s, damp and rainy in Upstate New York this morning. Big project for the day: the DH and I are going to do a big tamale-making thing for the freezer..Yummy.
(((barbara & Garry)))
Keep warm.
Morning Christy, Things here winding down here from elections, snowed lightly yesterday 65 tomorrow. Raking leaves on the agenda. Looking forward to kids and grandkids coming for the holidays.
How are things going with your FIL moving in.
Christy, G Morning. We’re shrouded in fog her in the NYC… and it reflects the thinking about the economy.
Went the fog lifts there will be nothing left of the america we knew.
Let’s build a new and better and sensible one.
Hi Christy,
That’s a Taylor, kinda like yours I imagine. That tapping technique is amazing and Bundy sure has it mastered.
You played any lately with all your spare time? ; ) How about the Peanut? My 3.5 year old boy is really showing an interest. We have some home movies of him playing with Me, GrandT-, and SisterT-. He sits there with his guitar tapping his foot and singing along. Precious.
Hope all’s well in your world.
T-
I’m gonna cook today too, unless I decided to read instead. Weather here same as yours, so it’s an inside day.
I have a recipe for 8 bean soup I’m thinking of making for the freezer. Also, haven’t gotten into baking yet, which was on my notional agenda for the autumn, so thinking I might bake a cake.
Now you are making me think of carrot cake with nuts and cream cheese frosting…….
For all that did not already know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xkw8ip43Vk
Okay — cake! I think it’s a good day for gingerbread in MN.
You know that carrot cake counts as a vegetable, I’m sure.
I haven’t had ginger bread for so long I can’t remember. Sounds like a good time to seach for a recipe. I have my mother’s recipe book which was published in 1932. Seems like a good place to start looking for a recipe for an old-fashioned goody.
And with the nuts and the protein in the cream cheese, there’s a whole lot of protein going there..i can rationalize eating carrot cake anytime..even breakfast.
Hello everyone else, didn’t mean to be rude.
Ya’ll want some coffee?
Thanks for the offer. Just finishing up mine, otherwise would have contributed.
We made some cheese the other day and today is the day we magically change it to cheese cake….. hopefully.
Successful fund raiser last night for Domestic Violence. Despite the bushie financial meltdown people are still warm and generous.
Thanks for that great music CHS
I purchased a fixer upper last May and I’m determinined to finish the family room today. I removed paneling and put up sheetrock and replaced the casing and added crown molding. Today I need to finish painting and clean. Home Depot has become my second home.
Good morning all
I’ll be updating my resume since I found out Thursday my job will be eliminated in 4-6 weeks. Some got the axe on Thursday but not me.
I don’t why I’ll be updating the resume since there are so few jobs but I guess going through the motions will do something.
(((Millineryman))) Oh, no!! But do update the resume. Sometimes it jogs the memory about a good connection. So sorry you have to do this!
Good work JPL9. I’d offer to help, but I’m taking the boys down to the Aquarium this a.m., then gonna park it on my screen porch to watch the Dawgs and the tigers fight it out.
Gee, Hopefully the job search will not take to long. (fingers crossed)
Wow – they gave you some good notice – that is actually good. You have time to go through your Roladex(or whatever people use now- I am still wedded to my Roladex), call everyone, have coffee with them, talk to them, and get ‘out there’. Updating the resume is good – but getting out there and talking to people is part of it too. And don’t think there are NO jobs out there –
Bah! Make mine electric. Lots of compression and fuzz.
The Aquarium and The High Museum are my favorite places. The High Museum’s new exhibit is the terracotta soldiers. Since I don’t have any plans to travel to China, I’m going to make sure to see the exhibit.
Sorry to hear about that. What line of work are you in? Can you pass the 67 page Obama questionnaire?
When I get mine, I’ll get the rest of the day to download my personal stuff off the box and hand in my card keys.
I’d heard about the terra cotta exhibit. Is there stuff to do there for kids. We rotate annual memberships between Aq, Fernbank, Center for Puppetry Arts and the Children’s museum. Maybe they’ll get a High Museum membership this Christmas.
I had a mini-disaster yesterday at work. I was doing a bit of surfing and thought I’d check in at Michelle Bachman’s site to see what’s going on there. Well all over her site, written over her text was “hacked by (blah, blah, blah)”. That sentence was repeated a few hundred times. I laughed and got out. 5 seconds later a warning flashed that I had picked up a virus (or trojan horse or something). I had to call the techies to come down and clean it up. Not good. So, everyone be forewarned….do not go there. The woman is toxic in every way.
Good morning from a frosty and moonlit morning in Butte. It didn’t get too cold last night – windchill of 29 now – but was 7 degrees earlier this week. The Montana kids at Montana Tech were still walking around in shirt sleeves.
I’ve got a friend visiting and I need to show her more of Montana than the World’s Biggest Superfund site (the open pit mine). I think we’ll wander along the Big Hole River today. Don’t want to get back in the woods as everyone is out getting their meat (deer, elk, and antelope) and we don’t want to get shot.
Our project is to make a family recipe book – all our family’s favorite recipes – for the young adult kids who keep writing and asking “how did you make….?” I’m also going to make an apron or two to go with it.
good morning,i loves yall muchly, and that is why i must post this again
THESE PEOPLE MUST not be rewarded for these actions with OUR MONEY as a bailout
But the scarcity of truly crappy subprime-mortgage bonds no longer mattered. The big Wall Street firms had just made it possible to short even the tiniest and most obscure subprime-mortgage-backed bond by creating, in effect, a market of side bets. Instead of shorting the actual BBB bond, you could now enter into an agreement for a credit-default swap with Deutsche Bank or Goldman Sachs. It cost money to make this side bet, but nothing like what it cost to short the stocks, and the upside was far greater.
The arrangement bore the same relation to actual finance as fantasy football bears to the N.F.L. Eisman was perplexed in particular about why Wall Street firms would be coming to him and asking him to sell short. “What Lippman did, to his credit, was he came around several times to me and said, ‘Short this market,’ ” Eisman says. “In my entire life, I never saw a sell-side guy come in and say, ‘Short my market.’ ”
And short Eisman did—then he tried to get his mind around what he’d just done so he could do it better. He’d call over to a big firm and ask for a list of mortgage bonds from all over the country. The juiciest shorts—the bonds ultimately backed by the mortgages most likely to default—had several characteristics. They’d be in what Wall Street people were now calling the sand states: Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada. The loans would have been made by one of the more dubious mortgage lenders; Long Beach Financial, wholly owned by Washington Mutual, was a great example. Long Beach Financial was moving money out the door as fast as it could, few questions asked, in loans built to self-destruct. It specialized in asking homeowners with bad credit and no proof of income to put no money down and defer interest payments for as long as possible. In Bakersfield, California, a Mexican strawberry picker with an income of $14,000 and no English was lent every penny he needed to buy a house for $720,000.

its a long slog,but explains a lot
Thanks Barbra, that’s a good point. Best wished to you and Garry.
My children were in elementary school when we moved here and didn’t appreciate the High Museum until 5th or 6th grade. Georgia State offered a program called Saturday School for elementary aged students. They had six week programs from computer science to art classes. My baby just turned 30 so that was awhile ago. You should research that and see if it is still available when your children are ready.
Michele Bachmann — the gift that keeps on giving. How creepy!
Yes it is good notice. I was told by someone who has been around this company for a while that the notice is a good sign that it may not happen. I’m not going to bank on that.
I’ve started the process of working the network so the word is out. We’ll see what happens. A lot of it out of my control so the best thing I can do is take care of myself and what I need to do.
Barbara, I’m sure your brother will enjoy the gingerbread. Please take care!

Mornin’, Christy, pups
Foggy and chilly here this mornin’ as well. Wobbs with a respiratory infection, Garry just home from surgery, Millineryman losin’ his job, I can’t complain about a lousy cold.
I thought things were supposed to get better after 4 Nov. *g*
Great day for reading and playing with C#.
Protest against Prop H8 and Amendment 2 here today. Don’t think I’m gonna make it. We’ll see just prior.
Yes – concentrate on YOU and what you need – I’ve been in your position twice and the only way I got through it was to turn the whole thing into a job of getting myself a new job – something I planned like a project and ticked off stuff on every single day. that is how a) I got through without going crazy or driving my family nuts and b) got a new job.
MM, what do you do and where do you do it (geographically speaking)? FDLers might have connections!!
I guess the operative question is, “Better than what?” And even with all the dreadful stuff that’s happening, it still feels better than it did on November 3, eh? *g*
hullo ,you peeved at me?,hope not
I’m an senior level graphic designer/art director with little web or interactive experience. As far as the Obama application, I’ve been involved in some flame wars in comments so I’m not sure I’d want to fill in that required section on the application about comments on blogs.
Im watching Ian Flemming in a movie on TCM…curious
i had that damn upper respitory infection for 2 weeks……….gah
No, what gave you that impression? My comment sat for quite a bit while I looked for a good acoustic guitar utoobz to add. Didn’t find anything to my liking. Colds make me grumpy.
Mornin Christy and Pups, off to a memorial service for the wife of a colleague then this evening inviting a friend and his fiance over for dinner. Carrot soup, beef bouguignon, beet & goat cheese salad and an almond tort are on the menu. Feel free to drop in.
oh im glad, your good graces mean a lot to me…”g”
Crikey! I’m on the way . . . .
would love to read the article. bad link.
I’m in south Jersey. I’m an senior level graphic designer/art director, specifically marketing collateral. I have little web or interactive experience, which in todays market is a problem. I also have 6 service awards for print design and teamwork, but that means little because I’ve never made a Flash movie.
oh me ,can i come too,beef bourguinon,yum
Cold, rainy and windy here. Snow likely on Sunday.
Pulled my wife’s car into the garage for the winter. It’s never been driven in the snow/salt for the last 7 years. I think today is a good day to get out the polish, wax, etc and make it look good for the spring.
That, and some home made ravioli for dinner.
sorry ,i go find…hold the phone
thanks for telling me

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a FDL convention sometime, someplace?
Awesome! Any chance of doing some quick up-to-speed learning re web et al? A tutor? An online class? Enough to gather up the basics+ ?
oh yes,i went to the first Escaton, had a blast.but found that some lefties are just as creepy as the righties…well almost….”g”
I hired a tutor when it was imperative that I learn autocad. Was a lot more efficient than trying to pick it up from manuals. Didn’t really cost all that much to get a very passable understanding of the software and my tutor is just a phone call away if I have a question.

I’m not an expert by any means, but I’ve seen a lot of eye-popping interactive stuff that don’t have the underlying graphics design that is so important. So I would add my voice to the urging to try to get up to speed on the interactive, Flash stuff (which is often overused) and trust in your graphics design skills. Can you freelance for awhile if necessary?
Chilly and gloomy here in NW Indiana. Makes me hungry for some good rich soup.
everybody took a snooze
Morning pups,
hugs to barbara & Garry, MM, SD, & sadly
I’ve been cat wrangling thsi morning, trying to take pictures but getting zero cooperation, I’ll try later during catnap time (preferably after catnip time ;)
Not cold weather here despite the rain, had the back door open all night for the creatures — and I wonder why there’s never any kibble in the cat dish in the morning?
erm….stuff that DOESN’T have…
Sounds like you live in Michigan. The skys are gray from November to April. A lot of people suffer from SAD because of the lack of light.
Morning, Ellie – Cat wrangling? Wow, you are ambitious

I have the skills, I’ve never had a project to use them that is legitimate. Before the Web one could fake work in the portfolio, now it’s much more difficult. Web sites that are done on a freelance basis will usually have the design company with a very small byline on it. Corporate sites don’t, but I can’t claim experience with a company that doesn’t appear on the resume. Most larger corps do their Web work inhouse.
When I was freelancing before this last gig I got, I got a good sense of where my skills are in this market, That is one of the reasons I applied to grad school earlier this year. I didn’t get accepted, which is good because they really dropped the ball on my application process, which is real reflection on them.
I am considering graduate level course at USC. I have to sell my house to do that. This market will take time, and I need income in the interim.
East Tenn….but i have skin cancer,so this is better for me in the long run..going to Miami to visit ma for Thanksgiving though
That’s a good idea about a tutor and having a reference to call. I do have the skills, yet nothing to demonstrate it.
i am HAPPY,HAPPY HAPPY since OBIE prevailed….im SMIRKING LIKE THE DAMN CHIMP………………..ALL THE TIME….
GGGGGG!!!
The idea of a family recipe book is a great one!
Back before computers and their printers, my cousin made us one. She first asked everyone for recipes. Then after arranging them using regular cookbook categories, she xeroxed all the submissions. The wonderful thing about that is that there on the page is the handwriting -and style- of each contributor. All these many years later it’s always a treat to see a bit of the soul of those now departed.
(and may I recommend spiral binding for ease of use)
What a country we live in.
For gingerbread, try this one:
http://www.recipezaar.com/recipe/print?id=48219
Hope that URL works; retyped from the copy I printed off. Took about 35 minutes to bake. If you try the Lemon Sauce I, change 1 T. cornstarch to “heaping”.
Your attitude is contagious and I not only commend you for your courage and strength, I also thank you. Now I’m off for the day to finish up my project.
I’d also wish for plasticized pages in mine, since the spills and grease spots are starting to make some of the recipes almost unusable *g
the little rascals. they win.
I have an old Civil War recipe for gingerbread. It has no sugar except for molasses because sugar was hard to find then so I was told. It came from Arkansas by way of my great grandmother who ventured up to Washington State and never left. My mother used to make it when she thought our blood needed a little iron. Here it is:
½ C oil
1 ¼ C molasses (about 1 small bottle)
1 egg well beaten
2 ½ C sifted flour
1 t each cinnamon, ginger, and crushed cloves
½ t salt
¾ C hot water
1 ½ T soda
Combine fat and molasses. Add egg and blend well. Mix dry ingredients. Add and mix alternately with hot water. Beat well
Bake 350 degrees about 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
I guess the old baking soda had to be “activated” with hot water. You don’t have to do that anymore. Just add water or the soda will go flat. it is delicious with a dollop of whippy cream. Oh and btw: make it with light or dark molasses but don’t try to make this with blackstrap molasses. Yech!

i dont call it MERIKA anymore
since Obies election MANDATE…its AMERICA the BEAUTIFUL
Can you scan them before it get too late?
ooo, good idea. I’ll have to do that. Of course when I do the scans, I’ll also get the grease stains, won’t it? A little local ‘color’.
does it tase good too? im not a big fan of REAL sweet anyway
Joe Lieberman?
Yes you will get grease stains and it will show that you left your maek on the recipe.
Nice. I’m very fond of flamenco.
Raw sewage if we’re playing word association.
Yeah me too! We may have a lot of SAD in Michigan but we sure are GLAD that Obama won! Stay in the shade and take care of yourself.

Good Morning everyone……. How is everyone?
Thanks. I was making soup.
I looked up a recipe for gingerbread & it also contained molasses, which I don’t have on hand, so will keep yours until after next trip to store.
I’m actually going to put each recipe in a plastic sleeve and put it in a three ring binder, so future recipes (and people) can offer it. I need to find one of those acrylic recipe book holders to add to the present.
I just love this place! It feels like family. Seriously. Well, maybe not. Way less pathology than family! *g*
i loove gingerbread, with homemade applesauce on it.
Ah, but you also have Dinosaur Bar-B-Q. My all time favorite restaurant (the original in Syracuse, anyway).
I remember you saying, before the trip to the vet, you thought it might be epilepsy. When I lost Min in June my vet bill had topped $2500. Do it again in a heartbeat.
Morning Katyyours.
Anyone know what savory tastes like? One soup recipe calls for it and the supermarket didn’t have any, so I’m wondering what herb to substitute.

The job losses are only now beginning; my spouse has to make cuts within the next 4 weeks, and he hasn’t made cuts like this in years, and I’ve already had cuts in the last week on my own team in a completely different industry. We know that there are many more cuts at other manufacturing firms in the pipeline, and these have a ripple effect since consumption patterns will change as the cuts are made.

I’m on “vacation” from Maui, here in No. California for the Stanford-USC game. Son is coming up from LA to cover the game, so I will see him — actually he has deigned to stay overnight with me at my friends’ and fly back to LA on Monday, so I’ll get him for an extra-long [for the college-aged] time.
Weather here is clear and beautiful. We’re cooking up “appetizers” for a huge [55 person] tailgate. We’re providing tons of guacamole, a brie split with apricots, cranberries & walnuts in the center, and some “tarte au tomate,” – pie crust spread with mustard, layered with sliced tomatoes, and sprinkled with Swiss cheese, then baked. Chili + cornbread, salads, and many desserts are others’ contributions. We’ll then waddle into the stadium for the game.
Can’t wait.

Just watched Actors Studio — oddly, Dave Chappelle interviewing Lipton — and Lipton talked about the question he asks of every guest, “What’s your favorite swear word?”
He said that the men are wimps, that women are much more, uh, open in their use of certain commonly recognized swear words; he followed with a clip comparing the responses of men and women on the program.
A clear majority of the women used some epithet containing “F@ck!” in it.
You have plenty of estrogen-enabled company. ;-)
my mantra used to be ’shitfuckdayamn’ during painful procedures. said fast.you can borrow it.
and katymine, when i see your name, i always think of the scent of flowers in the air from a night you described it by the pool.
no one needs to tiptoe around me…… I’ve been a nurse for over 35 years….. worked acute care for over 22 years……. we tend to have a lot of dark humor to deal with bad stuff…….. Elmore and I had our cry……. now we have the gloves on and fighting this ……..
Visualize shrinking lung nodules all next week…..
I planted two very large Jasmine vines next to my pool…… star jasmine like what I remembered from Greece…….. besides the smell of olive oil cooking that is my other smell that reminds me of Greece……
Have there been any indications of interest within the House & Senate to replace the Democratic leadersheep Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid?
Warm thoughts headed your way. ((((Barbara and Garry))))
Too bad this guy can’t play.
((((Katymine))))

Stuffed Pepper Soup
1/3 – 1/2 lb sweet Italian sausage
½ C sweet red pepper diced
¼ C minced onion
¼ C water
¾ C chicken broth
1 10 3/4oz condensed tomato soup
1/8 t garlic powder
dash pepper
3/4 – 1 C cooked rice
Crumble sausage, cook, drain and add onion to cook slightly. Add water and
peppers. Cover and cook 5 min. Add broth, condensed soup, garlic and
ground pepper and bring to boil, simmer on low, covered, 20-30 minutes. (I don’t simmer this long)
Stir in rice and heat through. Leftover soup will become like stuffed
pepper filling as the rice absorbs more of the liquid. Delish both ways.
Corn Leek Chowder
2 C chopped white portion of leeks
¾ C chopped onion
1 large or 2 small garlic cloves
1 T olive oil
3 C low sodium chicken broth
1 ½ C cubed peeled potatoes
¾ C frozen corn or 1 fresh ear sliced off cob
¼ t ground pepper
4 t cornstarch
1 T cold water
½ C half-and-half
¼ C shredded cheddar cheese if desired for garnish
Saute leeks, onion and garlic in oil (I use oil and butter) til tender but not browned. Stir in
broth and potatoes and cook 15-20 min until potatoes are almost tender.
Stir in corn and pepper and cook 2 min. Add cornstarch water mixture and
bring to boil. Cook, stirring 1-2 min until thickened slightly. Stir in
cream and heat through over low. Garnish each serving w/ 1 T cheese.
