Over at YouTube, a white-supremacist ding-dong calling himself the "Southern Avenger" is trying, not especially subtly, to fan the flames of race hatred in gays and white progressives, to convince them to spit on Hispanics and African-Americans by claiming that they are responsible for the Prop 8 vote in California: "In the wake of California’s gay marriage ban, Proposition 8, progressives must re-examine their stance on illegal immigration – or suffer the consequences." Never mind that this myth has been debunked quite conclusively by Nate Silver.
If the storyline sounds familiar, it’s because it’s been refined and polished and transmitted by the Southern Avenger’s more talented, discreet, and "respectable" ideological kin — the ones who know to avoid openly saying the words "white power" in mixed company, the ones who know to use dog whistling and code words and thus can land and keep six- and seven-figure media gigs. Kyle at Right Wing Watch has been busy documenting the words of these "respectable" conservative transmitters of bigotry, people like Jeff Jacoby and Matt Barber. They want, as does the Southern Avenger, to see us fighting amongst ourselves, to increase the bigotry they cherish. Don’t give them that satisfaction.

Good Morning PW
Hehheh! Hi Dotty!
Katymine! How are you this fine morning?
The Loathesome Jaysmene Cannick is anohter “Divide and Conquer” troll who must be destroyed.
Jeremy Scahill & Naomi Klein about to appear on cspan2, live from Miami Book Fair.
I feel Ok….. will see after a week in Telemetry having Interluken next week….. AND then see the bill for 7 days in Telemetry…….
My cough is manageable with mucinex ….
Have a fresh pot of French Press French Roast ….. anyone want a cuppa?
PW…I wonder if this is the same ‘Southern Avenger’ that used to do anonymous commentary (if you could call it that) on a now nearly-defunct radio station here in Charleston, SC, 96-WAVE.
His was some of the most reactionary, knuckle-dragging, ill-informed, craptastic bullshit you would hear outside of AM talk-nonsense. The shitwit host of the particular show he would be given his rant time on used to think it was funny. It usually made me want to drive into the nearest telephone pole at high speed.
In the interest of not “giving them the satisfaction”…a good reason for taking down the earlier “moonshine” post. Cruel ridicule is not so becoming here either.
thank you! just turned it on. two of my favorite journalists/authors.
Thanks for the offer, but I just finished my second cup. Contemplating a third. My thoughts are with you for good things to happen.
Yup.
I wouldn’t doubt it. A quick Google search might be instructive.
Meanwhile. . Karl Rove is up to his old tricks again, with a claim that’s FAR more disturbing than the William Ayers flap.
Morning PW!
It is amazing how the racist and the us vs them mentality has grown here in Arizona… and there are a couple of cheerleaders that keep it going….. including Sheriff Joe ……. JD Hayworth’s drive time radio show….
We have sections of Phoenix that now is empty….. Hispanics have moved out …. and the surrounding businesses have died…… one city counselor has changed his tune when he saw his district just die from the brown hate….
We have the city of Guadalupe without the sheriff protection because they protested the brown raids…… the city of Mesa is suing the county for the sheriff raiding their city library to find undocumented workers……. swat force style…..
best of luck!
Obama’s Weekly Address on YouTube
cbl2, how can you be reached?
Morning PW and Puppies.
Thank you for this post PW. And thanks to all those like Nate and Kyle who also give us ammunition to keep these creeps at bay. The hate squad usually tries to work in the dark, or sneak little insinuations and bits of doubt-fodder into the nation’s everyday discourse. We need to meet them head on and call them out at every turn.
I saw some promising signs of sanity and civility this election, up close and personal. Some red-staters whose relatives thought they’d never recognize the stink-bombs for what they were and reject them, some of these folks actually not only voted for Obama/Biden, but were adament about voting Democratic Party throughout their whole ballot. That’s how great their anger was upon recognizing, at long last, how the hate-mongers had warped their thinking in the past.
A new day is dawning with a little help, and not a moment too soon. Pant pant pant.
Shining the spotlight on them is good — especially if they’re as clueless as SA here is. We can’t simply pretend they don’t exist. As Teddy points out, the LDS has gone to great lengths to keep the public from knowing about its lead role in pushing anti-gay legislation. Why? Because the Book of Mormon has anti-black and anti-brown bigotry literally written into its scriptures, and such bigotry is still a part of the church’s cultural heritage, as most any African-American or Hispanic resident of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, or Utah could tell you.
thanks eCAHN
The poison’s rising to the surface. It’s sad to see, but it also makes it easier to fight. When cities see their economies collapse due to bigotry, they either stop being bigots (as your one city counselor has) or they die.
(((((Katymine)))))
We’re all sending you good thoughts and hugs.
Adie: Exactly. Things are so messed up thanks to the GOP — and it is so undeniably their fault — that even many hard-core bigots decided that they had to reject Republicanism even if it meant voting for a black man.
Klein: It’s not the govt that nationalized the banks, but the banks that privatized TresDept.
I tried to watch the youTube PW, but couldn’t get passed the 27 second mark.
Thanks PW.
digg
lol! it makes no sense. Latinos worried that married men would abandon their wives in droves if gay marriage is legalized. What?!
I guess they all are secretly gay?
I love Naomi!
Do you agree with what she said, eCAHN?
Or they think all of their friends are secretly gay…but not them.
But none of the women are gay?
I have to think about it some more, but it strikes me as accurate on first thought, and is terribly clever. She went on to compare the British “nationalisation” of the banks with the U.S. and, of course, thier deal is much better than ours.
Yeah, the logic or lack thereof in this makes one’s head hurt.
It is pretty vile. But it’s the same argument that Jacoby and other “respectable” conservatives have taken and prettied up for mainstream viewing.
I agree, PW. When hate-mongering is deeply hidden in dark corners or fed with wanton abandon by powerful voices like Rush and, yes YOU, Lou Dobbs, the seeds of hate are very hard to pin down and expose.
A large part of what I do on the net is to gather good solid, documented information for helping people disarm the Rush-n-Lou bandits who prey on the misinformed. As enough of my acquaintances begin to realize the solid base of accuracy that comes from a place like the Lake, they either start checking some of the original sources themselves, or sometimes just take me at my word. Either way, they seem to appreciate having the blow-hards out there being met head-on by facts, whether comforting or disheartening. A lot of them are tired of the rant rant hate message being preached alldedamtime.
I suspect most of us at the Lake are experiencing the same thing, sometimes even when we don’t realize what we’re doing is having any effect.
IMO, the push-back against hate is slowly but surely tearing down RushnLou Inc. in all its forms. Keep it coming, Pups. What you’re all doing is a new, powerful force for good.
IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!us
(CNN) – The global economy may be undergoing a significant downturn, but the White House’s dinner budget still appears flush with cash.
After all, world leaders who are in town to discuss the economic crisis are set to dine in style Friday night while sipping wine listed at nearly $500 a bottle.
According to the White House, tonight’s dinner to kick off the G-20 summit includes such dishes as “Fruitwood-smoked Quail,” “Thyme-roasted Rack of Lamb,” and “Tomato, Fennel and Eggplant Fondue Chanterelle Jus.”
To wash it all down, world leaders will be served Shafer Cabernet “Hillside Select” 2003, a wine that sells at $499 on Wine.com.

Morning PW
Haters like this piece of crap are out there look at Rush Blowhard ,the best way to deal with these people is to expose them for what they are, fools and narrow minded bigots
“The leaders of the U.K., France, Russia, China, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey and 11 developing economies have all come to Washington at the behest of President Bush in an effort to express confidence in the fundamental underpinnings of the world’s economy.”

Sometimes a cold-eyed, stony silence, delivered with laser accuracy, can be quite powerful, especially if your alternative is to dissolve into sputtering fury. We’ve all been there. Try it if you like, perhaps topped with thin glaze of, “We’ll just have to agree to disagree.” Best delivered face-to-face, BEYOND arm’s length. *g* ymmv
ahhh Nate Silver… the wonky hotness. did I read this week he got a book deal ??

Say. Anyone know if that surplus, wholesale swill at the WhyteHutch is mercun or furrin?
Why oh why does my brain insist on conjuring up a vision of a soused junior pouring a couple bottles down a ur*nal, giggling madly, while the assembled diggneytaries try frantically to find dark corners outta camera range?!

and brain bleach to aisle 57, please, if you’d be so kind….
lol!
So. His mom HAS to let him up outta the basement to signing appearances, right? Can he borrow the car?
I love Nate and hate the whackos hatemongers that divert attention away from substantive issues that need to be addressed.
However, I disagree with using Califonias results as the standard bearer to dispute all those who claim, as I do, that the Latinos must take the majority of the blame for what occurred in 4 states, not just California.
And I completely disagree with your assessment of Nates’ results: “this myth has been debunked quite conclusively”. Hardly.
Using those notorious exit polls on such a sensitive topic for half of the total data collected hardly qualifies as ‘conclusive’.
Move on to the other three states to see if your model hold true. It doesn’t. And you ought to know because it fails right next door in Arizona.
The same measure was tried in our Prop 102 in 2006, and was defeated. It passed this year by a whopping 12 points, 11 points more than those who voted for Obama.
What really made the difference in all 4 states was not race, per se. Because the Democratic community already had had success in defeating the ban attempts, with the the majority of black voters already voting as Democrats.
It was the religious beliefs of the voters, that mattered this time.
And unfortunately, while the majority of us had our noses out of each others’ bedroom and onto more serious issues, the usual gang of Right-wing religious whackos snuck in and scored 4 major victories, by entering 4 vulnerable states, where Latino voters could tip the scales in their favor, and using their faith to divide and conquer – did exactly that.
A community who once marched down the streets of American cities demanding their ‘rights’- both young and old -willing felt it was their religious and ‘civic’ duty as voters to strip another long suffering community of their rights.
What’s next -Roe? Planned Parenthood? Our open spaces? ANWR – to feed our exploding populations need for oil?
Think beyond California.
I think I’ve seen a lot of these sort of “trojan horses” coming into the blogosphere attempting to break up solidarity and place “land-mines” in the way of progressive initiatives. As Nate pointed out the affiliation of Prop 8 and Obama’s candidacy was something of a mixed bag…bringing out many younger blacks and Hispanics who are more tolerant, while also bringing out older demographics that may have voted for Prop 8.
Nate believes that the net impact of the Obama candidacy was wha made the vote as close as it was despite the massive efforts by the evangelical, Mormon and Catholic churches. Certainly there will need to be a greater effort to reach out to those demographics through education, and to cut through the myriad deceipts used by the proponents of Prop 8.
But expect more of these “concern trolls” in an organized fashion – the whole “Operation Chaos” PUMA strategy was nothing but this…an attempt to get the conversation off policy and into stereotyping people by gender or racial identities.
