Re the Cleland ad in 2002:

It’s not talked about at all in the local media,” said Charles Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia. He added that, despite the national scorn for the ad, “it worked in Georgia.”

I don’t need to add anything to that.

i see shep smith showing some integrity again. every once in a while he surprises. someone on FOX said the media was “in the tank” for President-elect Obama. Smith’s response:

Oh, please…the mainstream media reflected what was happening in this nation. It did not drive it.

Thanks for the torture article, BT. This is turning into such a sad week. First, it looks like Liebertoad will keep his gavel and now the smart money is saying nobody will go to prison over torture.

Our nation has completely lost the concept of consequences for bad actions. [I guess we can throw the Chambliss-Cleland ad into this mix, too.]

AGHHHHHHH!!!
from an ENLIGHTENED KOS POSTER!!!

et’s get all Barack Obama on Chambliss’ ass (1+ / 0-)

Recommended by:
timba

Let’s get Obama’s list of voters and make phone calls and tell all of Barack’s supporters that if they want him to be able to pursue his agenda they need show up at the runoff election and vote for Martin so the Republican fear mongering racist assholes can’t filibuster and prevent Obama’s legislation from passing in the Senate.

It is not available on barackobama.com now but it should be. Why not? The functionality is all in place. Just substitute the new Martin script, and make only Georgia phone numbers available to everyone nationwide. With so many Obama volunteers with nothing else to do, and only one state’s electorate to focus on, we could contact every single voter on Obama’s list between now and December.

What is to stop Obama? If it is not illegal, I say do it. Are they afraid of backlash? O’Reilly and his ilk criticizing Obama for wielding his influence in order to create a compliant filibuster proof supermajority in the Senate so he can advance his radical agenda? That will be his argument. Here is the counter argument: you are right, Bill, Obama does not want obstructionist Republican assholes preventing him from fixing all of the mistakes that have brought this country to the brink of ruin over the last 8 years. Do you remember how the Republicans banded together and prevented the override of Bush’s video of the SCHIP bill? That was dangerous legislation indeed, one that provided health insurance to small children that didn’t have it.

Fuck these Republican motherfuckers. Do everything in our power to crush them. Polls show the American people have no problem with Demorcrats controlling the White House and Congress. So make it fucking happen!

“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent”.

It’s going to be a tough job, and folks are queuing up in droves to oversee this thing. Wiser ones than I (and lately, that’s pretty much anyone) say this is likely to tilt Franken. Let it be so!!!

With respect to:

Obama’s plans for probing Bush torture

The Obama plan […] would emphasize fact-finding investigation over prosecution. It is gaining currency in Washington as Obama advisors begin to coordinate with Democrats in Congress on the proposal. The plan would not rule out future prosecutions, but would delay a decision on that matter until all essential facts can be unearthed. Between the time necessary for the investigative process and the daunting array of policy problems Obama will face upon taking office, any decision on prosecutions probably would not come until a second Obama presidential term, should there be one.

Even if Bush provides a blanket pardon, I trust that testimony before the proposed nonpartisan commission would be given under oath. Anyone caught lying to the commission could then be prosecuted for that and with Bush gone there would be no possibility of another pardon.

Note that one of the criteria for getting the International Criminal Court involved would be for the US to pardon everyone involved and to say that there will be no prosecutions. The door would then be open for the ICC to assert jurisdiction since the US refuses to take action.

Several congressional aides, however, said they did not understand how the Senate could possibly do all the proper vetting for such a critical appointment in just a few days. Thorson’s confirmation process, for example, took nearly a year.

so just toss the billions out with no accountability, no transparency even tho it all goes to their buddies.

Colbert Backs Up ‘Papa Bear’: The New Conflict is Gays vs Blacks.

The wingnuts and their Master, Bill O’Reilly, have been waiting for the day when those darned minorities would stop picking on white people and start turning on each other. Which is why they’re selling the Prop 8 outcome as the product of the black vote.

Colbert:

“Gays should protest black people! The new conflict is gays vs. blacks, and blacks vs. gays. And black gays vs. themselves. It’s gonna be great.

I’ve been saying for years these PC groups would turn on each other — although I had my heart set on Eskimos vs. the handicapped.”

Interesting. Dare I hope? United States and the International Criminal Court.

At the present, the position of the United States is set by the outgoing Bush Administration, who has made clear their intention to never join the International Criminal Court, which was established in 2002 as a permanent criminal court to investigate and prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Although the position of the outgoing Bush Administration has been made clear, the Rome Statute is subject to intense debate within the United States, and the U.S. position will likely be revisited by the next President of the United States, President-Elect Barack Obama, as well as by the Congress. When asked whether the United States should join the International Criminal Court, President-Elect Obama (then a Senator), stated:

Yes[.] The United States should cooperate with ICC investigations in a way that reflects American sovereignty and promotes our national security interests.

Still, it’s hard for me to imagine that Obama would actually follow through with this if it were to open up the possibility of prosecutions of US politicians in the ICC.

We are witnessing the continued evisceration of the republic at the hands of corporate aristocrats bailing out another industry having had the benefit of 35 years of protectionism, while traditionally resisting change because of cost concerns?? This is like giving a crack addict crack.

Jefferson Quote:

“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation,. the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people.”

Top three concerns for Americans??
1) Taxes 2) Energy 3) Health care

Now Paulson pulls a bait and switch????

Yes, that law does complicate things a bit. I suspect that law itself would have a bit of trouble on the international legal front. [IANAL!]

I may do an Oxdown soon, but in the meantime, here is the ICC response to the letter over a hundred of us sent from Humanity Against Crimes. Their response doesn’t mention the refusal to take action situation but I believe that may come under the route of referral under the UN Charter.

The “possibility of prosecutions of US politicians in the ICC”, will, as you suggest, Bilbo, prevent this nation from joining the ICC.

It is both an example of our “exceptionalism” and a reminder that the American Political Class will never allow ANY of their fellows to EVER be held accountable for the most serious of crimes …

The Rule of Law simply no longer exists for America, internationally or domestically.

It will be interesting to witness how this truth will be parsed.
