With races in Alaska and Minnesota not going well for them, the GOP is increasingly determined to hold on to Saxby Chambliss’ seat.
U.S. Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, appeared with Chambliss at his Cobb County headquarters, a day before U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) comes to town to stump for the Moultrie lawmaker.
“Saxby and this race may well end up being the firewall against the 60-vote majority the Democrats are trying to achieve,” Ensign told reporters on a conference call before a news conference by the two senators.
Ensign took a shot at Chambliss’ opponent, Atlanta Democrat Jim Martin, when the Nevada lawmaker accused the incoming class of U.S. senators of being among the most liberal ever elected.
“Jim Martin would be another liberal voice to join that group in Washington, D.C.,” Ensign said.
Just for the record, Jim Martin is a Vietnam veteran. Saxby Chambliss got 5 deferments during the Vietnam War because his knee had an owie. And just like during Vietnam, Saxby’s having other people do the fighting for him in the runoff.
Martin on Wednesday praised McCain, but criticized Chambliss for bringing in Republican top guns to boost his chances.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will come to Georgia for Chambliss on Sunday.
“You can bring in all the political leaders of the past, like Saxby Chambliss is to shore up his position, but truthfully, it’s the old politics. We’re moving forward, and are taking our message to voters,” Martin said.

“that group” sounds like “that one”. WTH? They say liberal like its a bad thing!
This is sorta like watching a Nazi cruiser go down through a periscope during WWII. Explosion ‘midships, breaks in two, lotsa screeching tearing metal sounds, slooooowly slips beneath the waves.
I read somewhere that Chambliss called for the Georgia elections folks to go ahead and declare him the winner without a run-off because his ‘bad knee’ is acting up on him.
I wish I could remember where I saw it as it was not posted as snark.
It must be such a burden for heroic Republics like Chambliss, Cheney, and Limbaugh who really wanted to serve but were just unable. They do not want your children to suffer their sad fate.
I wonder if Martin is getting any PAC money from the prison industry who might see a huge surge in business if Dems get that 60 seat majority.
Aw, cmon, twolf. Why’d you kick Sarah off the float? And how did you get the photo of Mitt in his magic undies?
If Obama is keeping Lieberloser in the catbird seat, he better get his ass down here to turn out the vote for Jim Martin to get to 60.
I’m not sure if a lot of his supporters are going to be as motivated to finally give Saxby what he deserves, unless they see Obama’s face on the runoff.
Can he donate campaign fundage down here?
I’m seeing a ton more R adds than D.
Saxby, I dare you to run an add with Martin’s picture next to Osama and Saddam. Double Dawg dare ya.
What a day, what a day, for an auto-da-fé!
Candide reference. Wow.
I’m hearing rumblings that somehow we shouldn’t support Martin against Chambliss because of Lieberman. Excuse me — what??
We have the chance to kick this neanderthal out of Congress right now, let’s do it.

Would Jane, any other FireDogLake contributor, or any Blue America representative care to explain this?

Because, seriously, what the fuck? Is this what all those Blue America donations are being used for?
Sorry, BT. Teddy’s oxdown diary speaks for me.
This is Who Senate Democrats Want to Give A Gavel To
More feckless Dems is not the answer.
Firewall? Do you think they mean Alamo??
Howie has explained his thoughts before. I questioned him on the merit referring to Mitch McConnell as Ms. McConnell and he explained to me as, paraphrased, calling out the hypocrites.
ot – bush on cspan explaining the need for good financial regulation including credit default swaps.
Selise, there’s a decent article in the Journal today on CDS. I think it was section C.
I disagree with Teddy.
Punishing Jim Martin and helping Saxby Chambliss because you want to punish Harry Reid doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The goal is to elect good Democrats. Either Martin is a good Democrat or he isn’t.
thanks will look for it.
In a move to let bygones be bygones, I predict Barack Obama will come out in support of Chambliss. Some will see this as crazy but Obama supporters will rally round saying that a new day has come and we should just assume that Obama has a “really cunning” plan.
Thanks for the info, was that on a previous thread here? Can you link me?
If you’re suggesting there’s no difference between Martin and Chambliss, I’m going to have to politely disagree with you.
Yes it was on a thread here but it’d take me forever to find it. needle/haystack
Must have been sometime this spring or summer.
That’s like an archaeologist closing the barn door 3,000 years after the horse bolted and the barn fell down. I can’t think of anything more irrelevant than Bush talking about anything anymore, but the economy in particular.
I’m saying that Obama’s support of Lieberman would make as much sense as his supporting Chambliss.
Oh! Let me guess.
Boosh would say, in his own impeccable way, (which I shall not imitate)”Um … bedder, not more, regoolayshun wud make everthang gud.”
“An ‘Murkuh is real lucky we has got the best people fer doin’ that.
These kindda stuff happens bud nobuddy knows why. We can’t blame nobuddy, cuz nobuddy was seen wud wood happen. Bud the fundments is real strong an’ ahm perpared ta pay wuddever price this will cost ya, cuz, ya know, id’s everbuddy’s fawlt and somebuddy knows that”.

sure, now he has the idea. what a putz.
you missed the bit where he lectures the rest of the world about what they need to do, how freedom is about free markets and how we should not doubt that just because of a couple of months of trouble in 60 years. *g*
and yet he continues. and people listen. didn’t keep track of the number of applause lines, but they were not infrequent.
Oh drat!
He waxed elogant AND profownd.
Who wudda magined?
;~D
sure, sure, the rest of the world will listen to US. what an idiot.
This is how AP reported Bush’s speech:

Could anything be more idiotic, empty, and wrongheaded at the same time?
Obama’s support of Lieberman makes perfect sense – well, not to me, but I’m sure to Obama – Lieberman if you’ll recall was his role model.
68 days?
yes, but the planning started long ago. now is the time for ideas to correct the system. we only have this window. it is a short one. once the term starts we have our hands full just fending off the attacks. they don’t die without a wood stake through the heart. if you can find it, that is.
Uh, at the risk of getting in trouble here…oh, heck, that’s never stopped me before, I agree with you.
Can you spell elitist?
Some people don’t understand that tolerance works both ways.
Some people think their farts don’t stink.
But, actually, they can think that if they want.
I don’t contribute to that kind of attitude.
And, I have no brown nose.
he was? where/when was that?
Wow, yeah. I found this pretty quickly:
And I think this speaks pretty well for me:
Jane, are you OK with these kind of “progressive” tactics?
the short window you describe may not be only political. roubini has said we need to act now, before jan 20, and in a big way to avoid a worse downturn and long period of no economic growth.
As I recall, Obama assisted Lieberman in his run against Lamont. I’m searchin for some of the other examples right now so I can give links – I hate to just say something and run…
yes, that is one way to do it. let them show SOME spine FIRST.
Okay, I’m only a little bit right – Obama spoke for Lieberman early on and then came out for Lamont.

this is all in the thugs plan. hell, they WANT bama to be stuck with what rush is calling “the obama recession” they will drag their feet. can’t do much about it, in my view. we are stuck.
Obama as a freshman senator requested Lieberman as his mentor (sorry, I said role model) -
http://thelonelywolfinoslo.blo…..ility.html
okay, long time ago. times change. it is politics.
he was, at the time, how should i say…a bit naive?
i’m out.
Don’t let them get to you.
Peace, my friend. Okay, and a hug.
Roubini is right. This is already turning into a long litany of missed opportunities to avoid or mitigate the worse effects of the housing crisis and financial meltdown. Unfortunately, our elites who are calling the shots on this are the same greedy, clueless dopes who brought this all down on us to begin with.
that probably the biggest reason i don’t think it makes sense to take a “wait and see” approach to the obama administration.
yep
A BINGO! for you.
And, a BINGO! for you.
Time, now, IS of essence, unless carriages turning into pumpkins at midnight, and lost glass slippers at the ‘ball’, always end in fairytale fashion … where everybody in the world, who ain’t already filthy rich, wins the lottery big time, otherwise … innerestin’ times ahead and Obama’s gonna need all the ‘help’ we can give him. (Whether he wants it or not, and, in spite of however ‘well’ he has ‘insulated’ himself,he’s gonna get it.)
Starting, yesterday.
If the economy collapses these elites that are fiddling while Rome burns will be just fine. The “people” on the other hand are going to suffer like they never have since the Great Depression.
