I have always thought of Michael Barone as the Gallagher of punditry — should something happen to Fred Barnes or Chuckles Krauthammer. But now we find out he is the Michael Barone of stand up comedy, please bring your own plastic sheet and sledgehammer.
“The liberal media attacked Sarah Palin because she did not abort her Down syndrome baby," Barone said, according to accounts by attendees. "They wanted her to kill that child. … I’m talking about my media colleagues with whom I’ve worked for 35 years.”…
Barone was speaking at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, to the 121st annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges…About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.
Barone did not dispute the accounts of his remarks. Asked about the comments, Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line."
So really, the fault rests with society, not Michael Barone – "Damn you Toastmasters!". Self-proclaimed comedy expert Richard Cohen would surely agree.

Oh, but would someone quit us of these evil priests
Paraphrasing Henry II (oral tradition)
snip
Funny. Hmmm.
Liar. Yeah.
These people are disgusting in their lies. It seriously sickens me that they continue to slur decent people with outrageous and dangerous lies. THEY. ARE. LIARS.
It’s simple really.
They have absolutely nothing else to offer America.
Sad, and disgraceful, but true.
To understand how these dispicable people think, I suggest you read an on-line, free book written by Robert Altemeyer entitled The Authoritarians. I am so sorry I don’t have a link. The original suggestion was from timF on an earlier thread. If you google Robert Altemeyer, The Authoritarians you can however find this free e-book. I read it Saturday afternoon. It is sooooooo enlightening. It gives all of the necessary psychological background on right-wing nuts and what makes them tick. I suggest you get everyone you know to read it. Very, very enlightening, very interesting and quite entertaining reading. A must for any progressive. Please, please, please, read.
So rather than apologize for being an asshole and lying he would rather make up another lie about how he was just trying to be funny…consequently demonstrating that he is indeed an asshole on both counts.
God forbid he should admit he was wrong in the first place.
http://members.shaw.ca/jeanalt…..arians.pdf
God bless you. It is a must read. It took me all afternoon, but I couldn’t put it down, so to speak. It answered so many questions. It is so on point, as they say.
Am I wrong, or don’t you think that as many people as possible should read this. To understand what we are up against. To maybe even get people to see themselves and change their ways?
I don’t know about you, but i plan to get as many people as i can to read this. If you have any objections/ideas/alternatives please reply.
I consider The Authoritarians and The Shock Doctrine both equally valid. The big problem I see is that few will recognize themselves in those mirrors. That failure removes the chance that action will be taken by those able to do so; this requires thinking outside the accepted frame of reference, not something most of humanity is capable of doing. (Sort of short answer)
I really do not relish beating a dead horse (I never use the word hate, it is negative and ugly) but I hope someone here will push this e-book as it is sooooo very important. Anyone who thinks it is not important, I would love to hear from you. sophiehunter@live.com. Thank you. Otherwise I will find a way to push it for ever, and ever and ever.
I agree, however, you cannot give up. The Shock Doctrine is much more difficult reading. I have recently read it and loved it. However, I don’t expect others to necessarily read it. However, The Authoritarians, is a much easier read and much more entertaining. Maybe I’m a “dork” who loves to read and learn, but I think a lot of people here would enjoy it and enjoy spreading it. Call me naive, but I believe in the people here and elsewhere.
I do seriously want to thank you for helping me with the link. I hope that you will continue to help me in my attempt to get others to read it as well. Please e-mail me as to how to link this e-book to others who I think would like to read it past this thread. Again it is sophiehunter AT live DOT com Thank you.
About the only way most people will accept change in their lives is if there is an active discordance with their surroundings (world view). The world view is built from knowledge of the world; history, sociology, economics, politics, law, numeracy and logic, philosophy, etc. All of these are complex subjects, many do not provide a “correct” answer to a given question but guide to a “better” answer. All are also the result of study, no one is “born” with knowledge of these. What will be derived from such knowledge is highly dependent upon what is put into their study. Failure to obtain an education, removes the ability to function at a substantial level. That education is missing from the system and the gained knowledge from experience is not honoured. Draw your own conclusions.
Am not a computer expert but Bookmark the address and copy it into whatever message is what I’ve learned. Good luck on your project, wish you the best results.
Well I plan to put this knowledge into their study. I don’t believe that a failure or inability to obtain a formal education removes their abiltiy to function at a substantial level. Sometimes people just need to be told/informed of new information. You would be surprised, I think. The system can be gamed.
How did you know so quickly, what I was asking about?
So very pessimistic….
Yes, pessimistic, but then I could be in for a pleasant surprise.
away
Over on one neutral Web site, right-wing posters think Barone spoke the truth! That really scares me, that these people are so willing to believe that a horrible joke about the attitudes of the left is true. No wonder they are called the crazy base. I hope to read The Authoritarians; thanks to sophiehunter for the tip.
I double dare you to prove me wrong that people can’t be taught the importance of knowledge, of world history, sociology, economics, history, politics, law, numerancy, philosophy, logic, etc, etc. (and whatever else I unintentionally left out).
Please read, I know that you will enjoy it.
I so sincerely thank you for your help. Peace and Best Wishes to you.
this could have really been dark humor guys
it is possible he was being facetous likel
“that water is too wet to put out that fire”
it could well have been a contradictory statement to make the point, thinking his audience was smarter then the statement and take it to mean the oposite;
“my sister passed away, at least now I don’t have to share the desert”
a bitter dark joke that means the complete oposite
you mean like briar rabbit…
ok, here is a perfect example
it is a title to one of my diaries;
“obama likes coffee, hitler liked coffee, obama is like hitler”
I am making fun of the critics of obama, I am not comparing him to hitler
I believe this statement could have easily been that kind of dark humor
These educators were from top schools in all the states–Cornell IIRC is a landgrant college, and MIT Naval engineering a sea grant school, so two of the original 13 colonies were represented along with the ‘west’.
Their hiring this speaker for this conference is about as stupid as hiring Colbert to roast Bush.
Now that I have been grumpy. Let me say good morning all, and to the West Coasters, good bye.
I think Briar Rabbit is an easier comparison… if you are too young to understand, please google.
You are so right, they are not nice peeps.
If you go to #8 and read the link, you will understand, and all will be right with the world. My promise to you.
got it
Michael Barone is an asshole. I don’t care for anything I have heard or read coming from his mind.
SoffieHunter I would suggest you view the following:

Sweet.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman today. MoDo, in “Boxers, Briefs or Silks?” says Sarah Palin is now trying to unmake her McCain campaign makeover and morph from uptown cloistered girl back to down-home accessible girl. Sarah is a gift that keeps on giving… Mr. Friedman, in “How to Fix a Flat,” suggests that somebody ought to call Steve Jobs and ask him if he’d like to run a car company for a year. It wouldn’t take him long to come up with the G.M. iCar.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes this morning. Speaking of dear Sarah Palin, the wonderful woman who runs Mudflats, the Alaska political blog, has been covering, in now four installments, an interview Sarah gave to an Alaska TV station. Now that she’s not shackled and gagged by the McCain campaign Sarah’s talking. Hoo, boy, is she ever! If you want to see what she’s chatting about, here are:
Installment #1,
Installment #2,
Installment #3, and

Have a great day.
I read it but Bob Altemeyer’s reasoning is more, well reasoned. I suggest you read it, although it is 250 pages, a lot more to read and understand. I however, ask and charge you with having more intellectual interest, to read something that is more than a couple of pages. To string together some complex, yet relatively simple ideas about what constitute being the brainwhashed and the brain valued. Do you think for yourself, or do you think as others would have you think. It is the most important question you will ever ask yourself. Are you capable of independent thought, or not.
Dang, I hit print before I looked at the length…
Ouch.
An Obama priorty is education. He needs to add mental health. There are far too many Republicons and media “personalities” that are in need of de-programming to be set free from the cult.
But I swear to you that it is worth every single word you will ever read.
What great reading. You are awesome!
going to the coffee shop, see all later
I remember the first vacation we took as a family, I kept asking my parents if we were there yet
so, is obama president yet?
man, this is gonna be the longest two and a half months of my life, longer then that first vacation drive
Michael Barone is an idiot and a douchebag. Oops, I went over the line. My bad.
Thanks for bring Altemeyer up. I have a printed copy sitting on my desk. I found it extremely enlightening.
69 days and counting…
Century of the Self is a 4 hour documentary… not a one page web site. I think you misunderstood. Follow the links the the 4 parts.
Strange but when Barone screwed up my first thoughts were of the two other “Stooges”Barnes and Krauthammer.Isn’t there some little farm for these three? My apologies to the Three Stoges at least they gave us a laugh.
It is great that you have been enlightened by Altemeyer, I think his information is the most important of our time. It explains so much. How did Republicans control our world for so many years. How do we change this pattern. Bob Altemeyer also suggests that if we expose those who are brainwashed by authoritarian ideas to something different, if we get them to see that they are the minority, we can change their ideas. They want to be among the “popular”, like highschool children who want to be in the “popular group”, they can be persuaded to see the light. If we are the “popular” group, they will willing and happily join.
So sorry, I will follow up.
wasn’t it 70 days and counting last week?
feels like it anyway
Off to labor in the salt mines…
69 days and counting today…
After an election the victor should be ready to take office within a week of the election. Waiting 2 1/2 months for the innaugaration made sense in a horse and buggy age but in today’s world it seems completely outdated. Every day that Bush stays in power he presents a real danger to the world and the American people.
No reasonable person would think that was a joke, Attaturk.
Buenos dias
here’s WJ lineup:

*waving bye to the salty Marion*
Thanks for the post Attaturk.
Good morning all. Fronline last night was a 90 minute piece about Lee Atwater. Inventor of the modern republican slime machine and the politics of divide, dissemble, discredit and destroy with lies and above all race baiting. Ended with him on his deathbed, at the age of 40 from a cancerous brain tumor, realizing that he had been very, very wrong. Tried to apologize to all he had wronged before he died. A lot of talk by his devotees Rove, Roger Simon, Mary Maitlin and Tucker Eskew from the McCain campaign. They choose to ignore the fact he tried in the end to make things right and continue to hold his tactics up as the only way to win elections. They are beyond disgusting. All of them. And that includes morons like Michael Barone who prove over and over again that they are incapable of introspection.
Honestly, if I had the power to do it, I would have aborted Barone long ago.
[mods: Barone is still alive. I did not actually abort him. ;-)]
i should have stopped at “liberal media”. Anything that would follow would only add to the horseshit. Get this assholes: sarah palin fucked up, on her own, in public view. No attacks by the “liberal media” were necessary. She becasme a national laughingstock all on her own.
Good points. Maitlin, Eskew, Rove et al are still walking the streets and until Republicons are held accountable for their crimes against the Constitution and the American people these people will continue to lurk in the night waiting for the opportunity to once again feed on the lifeblood of the American people, like the vampires that they are. They are addicted to power for powers sake and until that addiction is broken they remain a lethal threat.
The Guardian reports:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comm…..ession-lse
This very well sums up “the expertise” available to solve their way out of the problem. So much investment in education on display.
I like to think that Obama’s election is a repudiation of the Atwater-Rove style politics.
here’s the link to the movie night FDL had on Boogieman
Thats humor I suppose Barone peed his pants when he heard Sarah’s people yell death threats.
I think it was two fold;
obama answered most attacks with attacks and ridicule back at the mccain campaign.
that is the tactic that works I think, ridicule the attack
It will be a repudiation only if the rule of law is reestablished. If criminals are allowed to go free out of a “spirit of bipartisanship” then nothing has been learned. “Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.”
definitely! if we’d but the Iran-Contra criminals in jail we wouldn’t be in the mess we are now.
BT’s up
I mentioned before that I owned The Shock Doctrine, but was afraid to read it. Ditto Blackwater. When there was no hope, I couldn’t bring myself to slide further into a funk. Now, I can tackle these books as well as the e-book you recommended. Thanks.
5 Atwater’s to Michael Barone, 1 to anyone who defends him
Thank you, Elliott. I had somehow missed that post. It really is a well done documentary.
It would seemed more believable if Barone had said that the incident was an isolated attack of Tourette’s. Humor? Moreover, did he think a meeting of people representing institutions of higher learning were likely to be a bunch of right wingers who would appreciate those remarks?
Well, sure. If there’s one thing liberals are known for, it’s our desire to interfere with women’s reproductive choices.
Barone damns himself twice by first making an assinine remark and then dismissing it as a “joke.”
Nobody I know who is pro choice, myself included, thinks that anything about abortion is or can be “funny.”
Of course, in typical ‘winger fashion, he blames the audience for “not getting it.”
