OK, Obama’s our next President. Keep your sleeves rolled up, we’ve got a lot of work to do. No letting the Republicans claim any power, this was a mandate. It’s up to us to press the progressive agenda.

About Firedoglake
Good morning. Grover Norquist on CSPAN, Obama’s such a giveaway radical. He’s worried about the government controlling our lives.
Good morning, Elliott. Bobo seems to be making the rounds, doesn’t he?
Morning Marion,
wish he’d retire to write a book, we need some fresh voices.
Wow– I can’t believe Norquist just brought up Joe the Plumber! I can’t believe they keep talking about him as if he has any credibility left!
Is Brokaw still doing MTP? I thought he was just doing it thru the election. He needs to be retired.
P.S. Mike Pence (Phil Graham’s understudy) is going to be running for one of the recently vacated RNC leadership positions.
There. Do we really need another book from Bobo?!
Good example, Norquist– Microsoft. It’s a monopoly, that’s why Mr. Bill is so rich. I thought you guys believed in competition?
Well, considering the moves the Bush/Cheney admin put into place to spy on us after 9/11, I find Norquist’s position pretty crazy. He doesn’t think that FEAR has not put a heck of a lot of control over people’s lives already? Imbecile.
Shorter Norquist – the sky is falling, the sky is falling
I know, but then I’m forever amazed at that man’s “thought” process.
he makes a good living whining about taxes, tho
.
as for MTP, Brokaw is hosting this week. Haven’t heard when he’s really going to step down.
Does anyone have anything new on what’s going to happen with that loathsome little Quisling toad Lieberman? I was mostly away from teh toobz yesterday…
Thanks Elliott. Good morning all.
And may it fall on him and his buddies first!
Nice one. Made me smile. Thanks.
Obama is considering a White House staff position for him…
It occurs to me that “toad” and “Joe” sound somewhat alike, so from now on I shall simply refer to him as Toad Lieberman.
Norquist: “Some of the rhetoric from congress and right wing radio came across as hostile to Hispanic voters.”
Gee, ya think? :-((
Norquist sounds like he’s hoping for America to get worse. What happened to “Country First”?
707! (But a spew warning should have been offered!)
Cleaning staff I hope
Liarman wants to hold on to his Chairmanship of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs to serve as a platform to hamstring Obama. He’ll intitiate investigations to undermine Obama’s efforts and to provide cover for his criminal friends in the Republicon party.
agreed!
He’s a Lieberdoodle
Brokaw won’t retire until the vat of wax they dip him for his makeup is empty.
Good morning
chatty bunch this am.
Good news!
Obama Positioned to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions
link
Ditto.
I hope to heaven that Reid makes it clear that he can have something else (picking the gum off the bottom of the tables in the Senate mess, maybe) but that his current position will not stand.
hmmmmm.. the stuff we hear about him is crazy. one day the media is helping him, the next day, he’s a terrorist. make up your mind!
this might help you in fact: http://www.spinwhip.com/obama :-) check it out!
I just had a thought. Won’t the Obama’s need to hire someone to pick up the new puppy’s poop from that big old lawn? Joe?
morning MM, I like your good news:
Obama-Biden Transition Team includes Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in Policy
What gets me about Lieberman is how much support he has from Democrats. Didn’t they noticed he stabbed them in the back?
We need to hit the Democratic Caucus with calls, emails, and letters letting them know he can’t have a gavel anymore.
Oh, puhLEEZE!! Who dreams up this pap??
Was nervous when I first heard about Emanuel as chief of staff, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Not much sense in a toy poodle having Obama’s back (well, in that case, Obama’s heel).
I am way puzzled by the speculation about Colin Powell as secretary of education. Seems like a very weird fit. Enlightenment, anyone?
Oh. Good morning.
Joementum should be in prison..a spy for the US Neocon insurgency and Israel.
An early sign of overreach.
The talking heads exposed for the idiots they are.
excellent! sounds like the good stuff i’ve been looking for. thank you for the link elliot, off to read.
Jane had a great petition up several times
yes, if you scroll down on the right hand side is a widget to sign it. I urge anyone who hasn’t signed to do so.
Indeed, I was so happy when I found that last night. I was doing some research about Mormons and gay bashing when I came across that. Some have claimed that the Loser Day Satans have worked to keep sexual orientation out of Utah’s hate crime legislation.
ibid
You think it’s too much?
Why do you say over reach?
joe the plumber and tito the builder were on huckabee, joe has a new non-profit and tito pipes up about ‘elecshuns’ and rights as a citizens and how it’s not like venezuela. so THAT’S why he’s the gop’s token latino…joe was on by himself, then huckabee brought out tito, after he came out, tito got more air time, joe didn’t get to comment on tito’s points, bet joe didn’t like that much..
repeats tonight at 8 on fox….last week hwas richard dreyfuss, bill maher, lorne michaels and the snl news guy and closed with huckabee’s band playing ‘honkytonk woman’….really. was a keeper, i accidentally taped over it.
mornin’ elliot and pups!!
checked cnn for the fareed info, still nothing listed for this week.
http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/
elliot, thanks for the schedule every week.
p.s. thanks to those who read my first oxdown diary. was nervous but was fun.not blogwhoring, just thanking. was going to make the first one i did about art, but lieberdisgust came over me in an email. ha.
It’s been too long since school. I had to look that up. Fortunately, there’s a dictionary on my desk. (in addition to the computer.)

Good Morning. Did you all see this Salon piece on Rahm?
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/11/07/rahm/
carpet cleaner/puppy minder, morning shift.
Some woman caller on WJ whining about if she and her husband make combined $250,000. are they going to have to get divorced in order to make it because the cost of living where they live is so high.
Question: Is there *anyplace* in this country where a family with three children shouldn’t be able to live on that total amount?
I always thought it was a funny word. Like the a frog sitting next to another saying ibit, ibit to the other frog’s rib it, rib it. It’s just how my mind works.
sorry can’t remember his name, but a dem ws on the other night repeating over and over how he likes him as a person, but not his politics. said many feel that way. i said ‘huh’? isn’t that how you describe someone you DON’T like?
I understand your sentiments about first diaries. I did one yesterday about Columbian govt. attacking unarmed indiginous people protesting there.
ha. yah, that’s better.
Good morning. I saw that too. Think it was a talking head on Tweetie.
gotcha. I guess I need more coffee.
just read elliot’s wapo link on the working group for obama’s transition team that is planning to undo lots of bush’s bad acts. i think it sounds very, very good. hopefully the list will be posted soon so we’ll know more – but from what the article did say, i am seriously impressed. the real test of course is yet to come when words become actions, but for a transition period imo, this is excellent.
Iirc, didn’t that article also indicate they’ve been working on such a list for some extended period of time?
Second that.
Also, shows an alertness & an in-your-face that starts to put W in his place.
My mind scares me sometimes.
How’s biz? Creating anything strange these days?
This all reminds me of one of Molly Ivins’ books. She said Texas spent years undoing all the damage Bush did there.
elliot and millineryman – since you are both here…i had a question on your petition. is it your intention to stop liberal churches from advocating for gay rights too? ianal, but i thought that the change in tax code you propose would equally affect them as well as the mormons and if that’s the case, just wanted to know if that was your intent. thanks!
2 guests on WJ talking about how foreigners regard Obama. Short version: like him just fine, largely because W has been such an a**hole. Can’t wait for the R callers.
BTW they represent The Economist & Al Jazeera.
Good morning everyone!
Is anyone else having problems playing a YouTube video? If so, have you fixed it and what did you do to fix the problem? I’m so frustrated right now.
Cool beans, huh?
Nice to wake up with good news.
Oh frabjous day!
yes, wapo said months. and 4 dozen lawyers. that sounds right to me – bush has been busy fucking things up and there is lots to undo. can’t wait to see the list they’ve come up with.
A retrospective by James Moore: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..42232.html
A few months back, Selise, I read that Barack Obama is going to personally go down all of George Bush’s signing statements to see if laws were broken. Ooopsie for George! LOL
selise, don’t sign it if you don’t want to.
Al Jazeera guy points out that Rahm appointment will not endear Obama to Middle East.
Washington Bureau Chief for Al Jazeera on C-Span now, Only time I get to see their work is on Mosaic on Link tv. What would need to be done to get the cable and satelite services to make them available to us full time?
Kay I’ve been having challenges with playing them for days. I thought it was my computer. I haven’t figured it out yet, though.
People who make $250,000 year & then whine that they can’t make it if they get taxed a little more have no problem lecturing others about “personal responsibility” and “living within one’s means”.
I had trouble with a flashplayer update and can’t watch videos either. Is that the problem you are having? or do they start, play for 2 seconds and then stop?
a friend of mine is in spain as an exchange student, and i hear from her family that the people there were very, very interested in making sure all the american exchange students were able to vote – they did things like help them get registered properly and in plenty of time, etc.
First caller points out not only the Rahm problem, but also Dennis Ross, “Israel’s attorney.” Heh. Asks why not Leverett or Juan Cole.
Hey, Mr. CPA -
Think the last time you surfaced briefly you said everything was OK in your world but you’d just been busy. Confirm or not? Have missed seeing you about the Lake and so glad you’re back!
You can steam their English channel live here.
http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
G’Morning.
Bracing for emails from Repub. relatives and the claim that voter turnout was less (relative to eligible voters) than in 2004, does anyone have a one stop shopping source of comparisons of 04 and 08?
heh,
I read Bush’s Brain and am glad I did. It helped to know his history.
which is a good question.
I love James Moore, and it’s not even because we share the same last name. He gets it…
You get politics pretty well but you don’t understand that there is a humanity that defines Americans.
Has anyone here read his novels? Prince of Peace was most excellent.
Demi & Elliott, what I’m experiencing is over-buffering, which means, it will start to play and then it will take a minute or two for a blip of the video to play and then………nothing.
I’m going to go offline for a second, turn off my DSL box, and then reboot. I haven’t done that yet, so maybe this is the answer. I went to Google Blogs to see what other bloggers were saying about it and most were saying it was an Abode/Apple problem. Not sure what that means!
Anyways, I’ll try my plan and if it works, I’ll let you know. ;-)
Al Jazeera guy deflected it. Said Obama comes in with good will, but Clinton’s ME policy was not much liked.
I thought it was a great Q, short, sweet, articulate.
Thanks
African caller sez to watch out for excessive symbolism. Yes, Obama is black, but “the moment he became the front runner he went before AIPAC and pledged unconditional support for Israel.”
Wow. Lotta callers very alert to this issue this morning.
try this link from CNN
When time permits, I will look at Internal Revenue Code Section 511, which, if memory serves correctly, already precludes political advocacy undertaken by certain nonprofit organizations.
Trying to remember if you’re in NY or the New England area…..wrt my question earlier on whether a family with three children should be able to live on $250,000./year: iirc, the whiner said she was in the Boston area. Do you know if it’s *truly* that expensive to live there?
it’s a good one!! i recommended it, but didn’t comment cuz i didn’t have the link to go with it. so, i just commented anyway just now without the link..
==
i found this the other day, put it on the blog..beautifully done..perfect .photos by an australian in shanghai.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmQoktg1lIA
The petiton was by a group of activists not Elliot and me.
To be honest selsie, I don’t think the tax code will ever get changed when it comes to churches. It’s too much of a hot potato. I also don’t think the IRS would ever do anything about it. I took it as a violation of the code.
i want to support you and millineryman and especially all the people affected by proposition hate. i just wanted to make sure i understand what i’m signing – and it’s unclear to me if the law change you propose is intended to affect liberal churches as well. is that your intent?
btw – i don’t object to that, actually think it might be a good idea. but that makes it a much bigger deal and something i’d consult with revdeb on to get her take (she was very active here in MA on protecting marriage rights for all).
hey ecahn, yeah, forget his former title…policy wonk.
$250,000 is a lot of money. That’s the amount I’m hoping to get when my screenplay sells. And, guess what? I’ll be happy to pay the taxes on it. We need better education, better roads, better lots of stuff.
they need to use hugh’s list as an outline.
I’m NYC/Mid-Hudson, and you betcha. It IS incredibly expensive. That caller did sound whiney, but she had several specifics: AMT, property taxes (don’t even ask), mortgages (can’t remember the # she used but she she probably has a half a million dollar one; she is clearly above average household income for Boston area but since houses are soo expensive there, even those people get squeezed on mortgages), and she may even send her child to a private school.
Sounds like relative deprivation to me
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relative_deprivation
The repair is barely started. It wasn’t just Bush, there was DeLay, Graham, Rove, and a whole cadre of imitators who still control everything but a few counties in Texas. An add for Democratic Texs Supereme Court candidates said that the all Republican Texas Supreme Court has overturned jury verdicts 82% of the time and ruled in favor of insurance companies 88% of the time. Of course the Repulican group was returned on Tuesday.
imo, dennis ross should not be allowed anywhere near the new administration’s foreign policy. one scary dude and i think one of them many reasons clinton’s me peace initiative failed.
a constitutional amendment. /s /no snark.
Shutting down DSL and then rebooting didn’t work. Darn it. I’m getting…
“Transferring data from s.ytimg.com….”
…on the bottom of my screen and no YouTube address. Seems YouTube stopped working after Barack’s win on Tuesday…at least in my case it did. A connection? Is Big Brother at work here? Not sure, but something is definitely going on and so far the techie geeks don’t have an answer to this problem!
I’m sure the Bush Regime will blame it on China. *rolling eyes*
I blame it on Adobe
Never heard him described as “Israel’s attorney.” Gonna steal that. Sez a lot very compactly.
this may be stating the obvious, but have you ‘paused’ the video and then tried to play it again?
agreed,
Leverett and Cole!
I see her point, too. The cost of living varies so that there is an unfairness to it. However, lets not forget that she gets to deduct the property tax she pays so that helps a bit.
British caller finds US elections appalling because there is no regard for the poor in the US.
Amazing observations this morning. Good to be alive & kicking.
Sounds like the same problem I’m having. I’m going to get the hub working on it, when he has time. He’s the ‘puter guy, but is busy doing other things. I’ll let you know if we figure it out.
It is frustrating, isn’t it?
Got a “Christ second coming” caller. Al Jazeera guy sez “strinking similarity in discourse between US & ME, developments seen thru American religious right & Muslim religious right.”
Stephy pushing Rahm to say Obama will postpone tax increase for the rich – obviously has is orders. Rahm dodging and weaving.
The one time I saw him on C-Span, a couple of years ago, I was impressed the other way. He seemed extremely well informed and thoughtful. I’m aware from the wiki write-up that soem felt him pro-Israeli and one on the staff called him “Israel’s attorney,” but I’m not sure their opinions are unbiased. I’m sure you’ve followed his positions more closely than I have, I didn’t hear anything scary when I listened to him.
Brokaw makes the statement “Democrats are known as the party of Big Government…………” How long must the U.S. suffer these rich celebrity corporate pundits????
Section 511 of the Internal Revenue Code pertains to taxation of unrelated business income of a nonprofit organization. I invite interested readers to peruse Internal Revenue Code Section 501(h)(5): http://www4.law.cornell.edu/us…..-000-.html
Mornin’, Elliott, pups
What, Palin and McSFB not on any of the bobblehead shows? Awwwwwww…
On a separate note my brain must be getting old. There’s a Mormon church a few blocks from me. If I’d been usin’ the old bean I could have been on the sidewalk in front this morning. Well, they’re safe until next week. Need to get a new piece of art board for a new slogan. Something along the lines of “LDS = BIGOTS.” Anybody got a snappier idee?
Stuck in a time warp.
Victim shares a lot of blame in that topic. Ds have been very weak at pointing out that Rs are party of Really Big Goverment (that doesn’t do anything except start wars).
Stephy’s roundtable bloviating as usual. One interesting comment by George Will, says Obama received a mandate (by electoral vote). Never thought he would give that up.
Web page cannot be found message up
I can confirm what you’re asking; a lot has been going on.
Are you and Elliott on Facebook?
Here’s my Tom Brokaw story. He started at the local nbc affiliate here in LA, where my sister used to work. There was a news writer, terrific guy, who went into a deep depression over his wife’s death. Eventually, he killed himself. Now, you need to understand that the group there was very close. I joined them for lunch about once a week.
After the suicide, Brokaw wrote a nasty letter to the station, saying that people there should have known it was going to happen and really pointed a strong finger that it was their fault.
My sissie wrote him back and told him how it was. Really gave it to him. He wrote her back and apologized.
When was Palin allowed to go out on her own even for a game of softball
Let me see if I can find another link.
thank you! that would be awesome. the question was on policy advocacy and especially on non-candidate ballot initiatives (candidate advocacy is already a big no-non).
“i am my brothers’ keeper”
“i am here on behalf of my gay friends”
How long must the U.S. suffer these rich celebrity corporate pundits????
I think the answer is to be found in what I bolded.
Obama is going to make both the rich pundits, and their even richer parent companies, less rich.
iow, don’t look for anything other than Obama-trashing anytime in the near future – if ever. They’re in this for themselves – not for you or me.
Al Jazeera guy sez facts on the ground in Iraq may not let Obama live up to his campaign promise of troop withdrawal.
Arrggh
He is really bugging me these days. Time for him to go fly fishing.
God = Love
Learn it.
Practice it.
I am,
thanks a lot for answering selise’s questions
Good responses when I’m confronted by church members. Wonder if they’ll have the cojones to do so.
Seems Dubya created a bigger gubmint than any Democrat ever. Obama will make gubmint smaller.
Time for him to go fly fishing.
I hope he catches lots of flies.
ooooo, I like that.
I do not think the problem is big or small. The problem is competency
I’ve been surfing a bit and I see that Novak wrote a column on Newt. He’s back to work? Why isn’t he in jail for that hit-and-run? WTF is going on here? Was the whole brain-tumor thing a ‘get out of jail free’ card?
That’s why I make the big bucks! Not (yet).
Hell’s bells and codfish, darlin’…..the South is runnin’ its ass off trying to catch up with you guys to the property tax issue. :-((( Ianaeconomist but simple logic tells me if you don’t pay the taxes to the feds, you bloody well *will* make them up on the state and local levels. I’m not gonna get into the issue of private schools because the ol’ bp is just starting to go down after last Tuesday.
Mike -
Ohhhh, me likes that ref; saved for in-depth review as time permits.
‘Early signs of over reach’???
Oh Please! Barack was elected, partly, because he is very smart.
‘The’ President can change/reverse many things with just a signature.
The fact that he has quietly and actively been working on this, bodes very well for US and very badly for BushCo.
he forgot the /s
Yes, property taxes are one of those time bombs waiting to explode. Prop 13 turns out not to have been the answer (CAs feel free to jump in). Property taxes particularly onerous on retirees who want to continue to live in their homes, but whose income went down while property taxes rocket up.
After you click on this link, please go to section 501(h), which pertains to expenditures by public charities to influence legislation: http://www.fourmilab.ch/ustax/…..I-501.html
Please note the following: John Walker, co-author of AutoCAD, posted keyword-search-friendly version of the tax code current as of 2004.
Oops. Sorry Allan :(
and Thanks Elliot :)

Norm Coleman’s Neiman-Marcus Riot
I ain’t a facebook kind of person. *g* Are you in the business yellow pages down your way? If so, I could get in contact via phone.
Wow. WJ callers this morning sounded as organized on behalf of Palestinians as I’ve heard from Rs on some other segments. Wonder how that happened. Lots of concern about Rahm.
I did a double take too!
i read it this morning, recommended it, really appreciated it and left a comment.
Matthew 10:34
SD, don’t picket alone. Get someone to film you. That way if some of those Mormon dudes wanna pick a fight, you’ve got it on tape.
You’re welcome.
Yes, I am (as well, of course, as the business and residential white pages).
The counties in FL found the simple solution to revenue shortfalls from the feds and state – raise the millage rate. Property taxes were supposed to go down after all the “swell” legislation and citizen initiatives last year. They went up. Pols are clamoring for a special session of the legislature. Alex Sink, CFO of the state and the only elected Dem in Crist’s adminsitration saying Tallahassee in denial about the state economy. She’s right. Sharp woman.
In Florida, one can live in a million dollar oceanfront home mortgaged to the hilt on $250K a year – monthly payment near 10K – plus prop tax $25K/yr. Of course, most people aren’t that fortunate, myself included.
Yes. That’s what happened here. Hit the old folks hard. It didn’t deal with supply and demand.
my opinion of ross doesn’t come from hearing him speak (i should try to correct that). here are some recent links from bernhard:
WINEP [which i think of as AIPAC’s think tank] has ross second on their list of research staff.
the Bipartisan Policy Center just released a report that ross was involved in writing: “Meeting the Challenge: U.S. Policy Toward Iranian Nuclear Development: A report of an independent task force sponsored by the Bipartisan Policy Center’s National Security Initiative.” from the press release:
hopefully this gives you enough to see why i think ross is dangerous. the R neocons may be temporarily out of power, but now we will have to watch out for the D neocons (i consider ross to be one of these).
IIRC, it was Sink’s hubby ran for gubner. He has a different last name.
i believe in stating things in ways that open dialogue.
and paint it in pretty colors.
rofl.
I’ll prolly be alone next week but am going to talk with SPFP and see if the group wants to get involved. Will also talk with some gay friends this week and see what they would like to do. Gulfport has a politically active gay community. There’s a possibility we could protest at every LDS church in the county simultaneously.
Funny you should mention that. All of my signs (and I gots a bunch) are all very colourful. Each word is a different colour. I think demi’s suggestion is very positive.
i like it, too.
thanks!
Okay, thanks. I certainly would agree with you in any opposition to hyping up an instant war with Iran. On the other hand, I’ll have to read what he has to say, because he does present serious rational arguments when he speaks and others who I think are rational have argued the dire consequences of a nuclear armed Iran. I’ll just have to do more research.
sounds good to me. if you find anything interesting, i hope you will let me know – especially if it tends to contradict my opinion of ross. thanks.
Morning, gang. One program not on the thread posting is Reliable Sources. I think they should be added. Today they have Tapper, Michel Martin and a guy from the LA Times [sory, guy, I lost your name].
Anyway, the framing was predictable. Right out of the box, was the press too easy on Obama? Then was followed up, was the press too easy on Palin? Still haven’t heard any mention of whether the tire swing media was too easy on their BBQ buddy.
You’ll be glad to know Tapper considers liberal bloggers on a par with the National Enquirer. I take that as a compliment, coming from the increasingly pompous Tapper.
yeah, I know my 160’s way epu-ed. mulling a diary.
Phase 1 of The Mandate simply has to include the disappearance of weasels like Grover Norquist (and Karl Rove and Tom Delay, et al.) from our TV screens. Not only has their beloved one-party-state dream been crushed before their eyes–by us, who showed our clear contempt for that rubbish just last week–these rats should be busy doing nothing but testifying before Congress or in various courts of law. Who gives a fuck what Grover Norquist has to say except a judge or congressional committee investigating the RICO syndicate run by Jack Abramoff and his fellow College Republicans?
isn’t it high time we turned the ever-so-wrong right-wing pundits out to pasture ??
