The race probably would have been closer. I also think, though, that it provided a “spotlight” moment. Voters could better see both Obama and McCain. Obama’s strengths showed. If he is successful it will be relegated to history and the issue(s) dejour will dominate the discourse in 2012. The economy was not an issue in 2007.
