Hallelujah! The End Is Near! We’re living in the End Times. Forty years of Rethugs poisoning our families and giving away Federal lands, forty years of sacrificing our futures and communities on the altars of the Chicago Cult, forty years of the corporatist Big Lie of "deregulation"…forty years of lethal greed in the service of corporate rule are nearly over. Until they are left behind by Obama’s inauguration, the Bushies will be looting America like there’s no tomorrow. The Bushie true believers are leaving office the same way they came in: stealing every Federal resource and regulation that isn’t nailed down.
The good news: the Bushies are finally hard at work in their Federal jobs. The bad news: they’re giving away our safety, health, and common property.
With nine remaining weeks before the wholly-owned corporatist servants comprising Bush’s maladminstation have to move their work from the White House to K Street, the loyal Bushies within the Federal goverment are racing to protect their dearest constituents: corporatists and the uber-rich. As has been the norm over forty years of Rethugs’ smash-and-grab "governance" in elected office, the Bushies message’ to We The People is "fuck off and die".
What do America’s water sources, public lands, Federal mineral/energy reserves, air, soils, and communities all have in common? Taken together, America’s natural resources, public spaces, and public services comprise our national commons: the resources we collectively own and collectively depend upon for our very survival.
Corporate servants we call "politicians" long ago took over the Rethugs and more recently the Dem party leadership precisely in order to turn over our national commons to effective corporatist control. [You thought both parties' "leaders" fought to get the $700 Billion bail-out passed to help you, grasshopper? Dream on.]
In their final weeks of misrule, the loyal corporate servants who are the Bushies’ Federal appointees are using our Federal govenment to shovel our national wealth over to their private masters. While the Fed and Treasury Bushies get most of the attention, other Bushies beaver away to deliver two great prizes: Federal regulations and Federal lands/resources.
The Bushies have less than two weeks remaining to trash America’s remaining Federal limits on megacorps: reguatory changes hatched out fewer than sixty days before the Inaguration can be easily reversed. Clinton ignored this deadline. He belatedly published regulations that would have protected Federal roadless areas: the Bushies immediately trashed the roadless area protection when Bush took power. Bye bye future Federal Wilderness designations for (once roadless) Federal lands. Thanks for nothing, Big Dog.
The Bushies would never show the megacorps the contempt Clinton showed for enviros: Power must be served, after all. With less than two weeks to go, the Bushies are levelling Federal regulations to suit the megacorps.
What can the Bushies give away with regulation? For staters: the Colorado River as a source of drinking water (bye-bye, Phoenix and Las Vegas) and the mountain tops of Appalachia (bye-bye to rural towns and the Eastern Seaboard cities relying on Appalachian water). What else? Your kids’ hopes for growing up free of asthma. Your kids’ hopes of growing up to enjoy National Forests and National Parks free of mines and clear-cuts.
What can the Bushies give away beyond Federal regulations? Just as they did with Interior under Abramoff’s corrupt pals, the Bushies can give away the big prize: cut-rate leases to take oil, natural gas, coal, and minerals from Federal public lands. From our public lands.
You see, as precious as our National Parks and National Forests are, We The People own millions more acres of common land held in trust for us and our future by the Bureau of Land Mangement: the Federal agency with the boring name and multi-trillion dollar portfolio.
Of course, giving away Federal oil, gas, and mining resources would be just as transparent a theft as giving the Treasury to investment banks. Even the Bushies wouldn’t try that, right? Except, of course, they already have.
Who cares? President-elect Obama can choose to oppose and reverse the entire Bushie give-away when he takes office. Or he can decide to effectively give the Bushies and the megacorps a pass on looting our public lands and trashing our common protections.
What to do? Let Obama know: reverse the Bushies’ final crime spree. America’s commons is ours, not the megacorps. If Barack Obama serves us — not the megacorps — he can protect our commons.
What will President-elect Obama do about the Bushies’ "end times" grab? Who does Obama serve?
[Breaking update: As the post was written, we learned Team Obama is stepping up to bat back the Bushies' last grab:
Transition advisers to President-elect Barack Obama have compiled a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone to reverse White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues, according to congressional Democrats, campaign aides and experts working with the transition team.
The real test will come in restoring the regulations that protect us against toxic substances and toxic industries, as well as restoring public revenues from mining, oil, gas, and coal. If President-elect Obama stands up to the American Chemical Association, Big Greenhouse Gas, and Big Holes In The Ground, his daughters and everyone else's kids may grow up in a survivable America.
If.]

Hiya Kirk! – off to read….
Nine final weeks…
Digg it
thanks, GrandmaSheila
What will President-elect Obama do about the Bushies’ “end times” grab? Who does Obama serve?
Might also be a good way to very quickly flesh out who the “new” majorities in the House and Senate serve.
An early acid test, if you will, to help us pinpoint who to target in 2010.
Spread the word, the pillage continues! No surprise, but we need to focus the public on the last minute rape of our national resources.
One of Obama’s early actions should be to delegate to a capable person or group the responsibility to review all Bush administration actions such as rulemaking, determine which are not in line with Obama’s policies, and whether and how they can be reversed. We want our country back.
Obama’s team has to be aware of these final giveaways. Hopefully, they’re on top of the situation. But yeah, we have to spread the word, don’t let their furtive, last looting-fest be hidden from the people, it’s what they count on.
wow…long time, short thread.
Maybe people really are tired of the negative.
I could be wrong, of course.
Of course, giving away Federal oil, gas, and mining resources would be just as transparent a theft
But it’s not literally a give-away, right? I presume that these rights, leases, etc. are in fact being sold, probably at a deep discount, but – this could end up being tied up in litigation for years while the new “owners” fight for what they consider to be *their* rights.
Perhaps the most effective way to combat this is to not try to overturn or negate the transactions, but rather to re-double efforts on environmental restrictions tough enough so as to make the ‘investments’ economically non-feasible, i.e. prohibitively unprofitable.
I am confident there has been a continuous effort by the Bush regime to destroy evidence of their malfeasance and that they’ve really picked up the pace now. Also, that despite a public pretense of desiring a smooth transition, they are hard at work creating obstacles for the next administration.
Check out the Washington Post:
Obama Positioned to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions
Stem Cell, Climate Rules Among Targets of President-Elect’s Team
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..id=topnews
According to HuffPo Obama’s team is on it and has been for a while:
“Obama Ready To Quickly Reverse Bush Executive Orders… Transition Advisers Compile List Of 200 Bush Actions To Overturn… Climate Change, Stem Cell Research, Reproductive Rights Among Targets For Change… Particularly Looking To Undo Bush Regulations Imposed For “Overtly Political” Reasons…”
jayt, love your idea:
LooHoo, I’m wondering if we can get “Jan 20″ calendars…like Advent calendars, but counting down the days to Inauguration.
Neurophius, thanks for the Digg invitation. Digs and — as Phylter sez — spreading the word will help on this issue.
GrandmaSheila1, form your keyboard to the transition team’s Blackberries!
That appears to be a broken link in the update. Here is a link to the WaPo article about the Team Obama pushback to Bush executive orders.
This is good news.
Hear it.
Thanks: linky fixed!
Fired up!
Ready to rescind!
I’ve had one of those calendars for about 3 and a half years.
Wonder if any of this will be discussed when Barack and Michelle visit the White House Monday?
Not a literal give-away: just massively undervalued, non-competitive bids. Mary Beth Williams at Wampum has been folloeing the interlocking DOI/DOJ corruption on this issue for years.
The Bushies (of course) set up DOJ as a firewall against litigation. As the Cobell trial showed, (and Ratfood points out) the mineral-combustible complex and thie moles in Federal service used record destruction / “loss” / non-collection with devastating effects.
I’m hoping Obama’s DOJ/DOI will prioritize effective enforcement and collection against the shady leases (and lessees) — and they’ll have the data base to allow efective action.
Oops…Wampum linky: DOI-DOJ corruption.
Almost 8 years on that calendar…doesn’t it feel good to know that Obama’s almost in? That we do still have the America we remember?
Dang, I was really worried there for a good long while.
America.
There’s just so much for the DOJ to do. Where to start?
The announcement of Obama’s selection of Attorney General is the one I most look forward to learning.
Along with all the other damage Bush/Cheney hath wrought, a multitude of dedicated and experienced employees who fled or were forced out of service across the entire spectrum of government agencies. It’s been a long time and most have moved on but perhaps a few can be lured back.
Obama himself has signaled, for example, that he intends to reverse Bush’s controversial limit on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, a decision that scientists say has restrained research into some of the most promising avenues for defeating a wide array of diseases such as Parkinson’s.
A team of four dozen advisers, working for months in virtual solitude, set out to identify regulatory and policy changes Obama could implement soon after his inauguration. The team is now consulting with liberal advocacy groups, Capitol Hill staffers and potential agency chiefs to prioritize those they regard as the most onerous or ideologically offensive, said a top transition official who was not permitted to speak on the record about the inner workings of the transition.
Cool! I’m looking for one with little windows to open every day from not til January 20th….
Let us know when you find it. This could be a real money maker!
Here’s another Shrub FU that needs to be reversed…
Aloha Ya’ll!
Aloha, CT
That is awesome news! ;-)
sup man
This is good news about intentions, and I’m glad to see that Team Obama felt obliged to release this information now.
OTOH, after , FISA, the $700 Billion Bail-out, picking Rahm (NAFTA’s boy) and his genuflection to Rubin/Wall Street’s baby the Hamilton Project, Barack Obama has repeatedly thrown in with the wealthiest against the rest of us.
I’m waiting to see if Obama will confront the most valuable Bushie give-aways: the ones that make the most profit for Big Mining, Big Chemical, Wall Street, and the Telcos.
When it comes to Obama confronting corporatists, I’ll trust he’ll do it after I can verify that he has.
Nevertheless, i”m glad you shared the WaPo article, and I hope it reflects what we’ll actually see Obama do with his Power.
Maybe it will be of some consolation to those of us who have been jumping up and down all week with their “concerns”. . . nahhhhhh!
Thanks Kirk as always you put your finger right on the jugular vein of the BushCO corporate give aways and the protections we the citizens need and deserve!
This is the people’s country and not the big money, big corporation’s country. I sure do hope that the Obama administration comes in and undoes every give away and reinstates all the environmental laws and regulations that BushCo has demeaned and destroyed! Then I hope they go after these bastards including the Captains of Industry who helped this robbery of our national treasures!!
Oh and I did Digg this post {Pups what about you??
My back is killing me from all the moving I’ve done today, with one more run on tap tonite…! Taking a break for a bit…
take it easy in that mon! legs
Always the eternal optimist, eh? ;-)
Yep. Especially in law, medicine, and other specialized disciplines, the gap between public sector salaries and the (more remunerative) opportunites in private practice is huge. Once folks have access to greater income, getting them back in thepublic sector is even harder….
((CT))
dat’s me
There have been a lot of people getting hinky because Obama hasn’t hired Nader and H. Rap Brown yet.
Relax, he’s a politician bound to dissapoint.
I’ll be happy if he’s simply not a torturing crook.
-G
Aloha, Margot! ;-)
I’d like to see a little higher standard than that…! Just a tad, at least… ;-)
Ouch! ((CT)) Where are you moving to? Did you find a good place?
I saw Ian’s awesome post about getting the f*ck outta Iraq most rickety-tick… Couldn’t agree more… I do think Maliki is in for a very rude awakening with it, but dem’s da breaks…
Storage for now, a furnished studio until I can find one for the family…!
Though I appreciate the putative concern for my emotional well-being (which is just fine, btw), the framing appears to inaccurately recast factual discussion of lethal policy choices as a form of emotional dysregulation to be assured away.
In academic psychiatry, the jargon term for recasting valid factual perceptions and concerns (such as the fact Obam’s cheerleading for “Clean Coal” is based either on lethal ignorance or lethal collusion) is “mind-fucking”.
In other words: post-modernist dismissals that seek to recast physics, chemistry, and biology as subjective emotional states don’t work here anymore.
As for me, the first change I’d like undone is to restore our rights of habeas corpus so when we protest environmental degradation we aren’t tossed into the rendition train as enemy combatants.
Condolences!
ayup: there’s a reason the First Amendment protects speech.
Thanks, Doc! ;-)
Geez, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve said that…
thanks for the big grin on my face.
You’re very welcome.
Heh, ‘mind-f*cking’ kinda rolls of the tongue, eh? ;-)
How come nobody mentions the mountain top leveling that is happening to get the ‘clean coal’…?
Beats me.
Don’t ya just love Slum Landlords?? They fuck ya at every chance! I hope they will at least give back your deposits…
Oh what am I thinking??? Never happens with them… Take the bastards to court!!
Holy moley….is that a reverse double mindfuck?
-G
moi? I don’t think I’m that coordinated: I’d do a belly flip just trying a forward single somersalt (?sp).
Heh, It wasn’t directed at you, Doc! It was more rhetorical in nature…! ;-)
Here’s the Sierra Club’s snark free-take: *g*
It wasn’t a slum, per se, nahant! ;-)
They never enforced it to begin with, so why not eradicate it…? Makes sense to me…! /s
all snark aside: I pretty much slighted the mountain top removal myself. Writing about well-known ecoissues which themselves show the patterns that comprise larger stories is always a challenge for me. How much “old” information in posts about a larger pattern helps carry the narrative? How much obscures it?
Above, I erred on the side of providing too little description/information about MTR.
I blame Canada (the oil shale made me do it).
Thanks nahant – and thanks for the Digg!
I’m personally aware of all the destruction created by the oil sand extraction in the Athabascan river region… You can actually see the vast tracts of devastation created by the tarsand removal if you google earth the Ft. MacMurray, Alberta region… Not a pretty sight…! :-(
MPSIYAR
(makes perfect sense if you’re a Republican)
*g*
Dayam.
When the move is over, I’d love to see you put up a post (with pics, of course) on that at Oxdown.
thers upstairs
I was not speaking of the neighborhood but of the owners!! Sorry if I implied your place was a slum…. It is just we had the same kind of problem in the past down the same street where we purchased our current house. But the owners were slumlords(even her sister called them that) and they ended up keeping $1600.00 of our deposits. We took them to small claims court but the judge was a landlord him self and we knew immediately we were fucked out of our money when he said ” I know how tenants are”. Bastard but there is no appealing small claims judgments in California!!
Kirk I always make it a point to catch your posts they always hit on things that mean so much to myself and to the health of the whole country/world!
Keep on keeping us informed please!!
Did you catch my Diary on our Solar Installation?
Hi Kirk.
I’m with you in spirit, but, oh groan. The bush/chainey-driven monsters will never stop trying to have the last kill.
My family’s early history included Salem witch trials and, no doubt, more etherially nonsensical although no less wicked use of stocks than the thugish wallstreet variety of mayhem.
Just a thought, since I’ve run out of pacifist ideas for dealing with chainee Inc., short of
abusingusing superior powers to restrain and disable their manic attempts to wreak destruction upon the world. They don’t seem to care about ANYTHING. They apparently are driven to wreck and destroy anything and everything within their reach, right up to the bitter end of their acid
reignrain. Please to lock them up and throw the key into their most caustic cesspool.
I’d be truly obliged.
Thank you for all your good efforts.
Loved all three: was wating for the pics to come up for the third. Makes me wish I had sun (and weren’t a renter). The small two-story house I rent physically adjoins the house to the south: four stories high.
No roof sun here for about seven weeks on either side of Winter Solstice.
I’m, er, jealous.
In the best, most manly sense, of course.
From your keyboard to Interpol’s warrants….from the Hague.
Do you know if there is a business plan for getting off of coal which is a whopping 50% of our energy supply?
Crock pit would be fine.
FYI Dr. Kirk, report found in The Guardian, hope you found it first.
Here is another good reason to cut all the forests down – not.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/envi…..els-energy
Potash, soda ash and borate minerals would be an excellent starting point. The Green River and Searles Valley resources (mostly on federal lands) are the largest in the world, but under the Bush administration has been giving it away thanks to the late Sen. Craig Thomas’ (Republican-Wyoming)efforts to deliver his wealthy Belgian, South Korean, Indian and American constituencies from royalty hell. Talk about low-hanging fruit! It would add a billion dollars to treasury receipts just by reinstating the old royalty regime.
Eggroll, thanks (and lamentations!) for your account. ZShould you see this comment, I’d love to have any pertinent links you may have: I’d like to write more about the Green River / Searles Valley give away.
Once again, thanks!
