This Saturday morning, I was really hoping to be able to kick back and share a few recipes with you all. But then I saw this Washington Monthly piece by Steve Benen, on why Lieberman really wants to keep his chairmanship of the Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, even though Harry Reid’s offered him several plum posts in exchange:
This seems to be routinely overlooked, but take a moment to consider what the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs actually does: it’s the committee principally responsible for oversight of the executive branch. It’s an accountability committee, charged with investigating the conduct of the White House and the president’s administration.
As chairman of this committee for the last two years, Lieberman decided not to pursue any accusations of wrongdoing against the Bush administration. Lieberman’s House counterpart — Rep. Henry Waxman’s Oversight Committee — was a vigilant watchdog, holding hearings, issuing subpoenas, and launching multiple investigations. Lieberman preferred to let his committee do no real work at all. It was arguably the most pathetic display of this Congress.
And yet, now Lieberman acts as if keeping this chairmanship is the single most important part of his public life. Why would he be so desperate to keep the gavel of a committee he hasn’t used? I’ll let you in on a secret: he wants to start using the power of this committee against Obama.
Lieberman didn’t want to hold Bush accountable, but he seems exceedingly anxious to keep the committee that would go after Obama with a vengeance, effectively becoming a Waxman-like figure — holding hearings, issuing subpoenas, and launching investigations against the Democratic president.
Lieberman doesn’t care about "reconciliation," he cares about going after a Democratic administration. Why else would he fight diligently to be chairman of one committee instead of another?
If you want to make sure that President Obama doesn’t get CoupGated the way President Clinton was — if you want to make sure that he has the time and freedom to pursue his agenda instead of being tied down by witchhunts the way Bill Clinton was (and do remember that Joe Lieberman, who professed to be Bill Clinton’s friend, was aiding and abetting the GOP witchhunt) — then Joe Lieberman must go. Now. Take his gavels away before he and his Republican friends can work to destroy Obama.

I hope Obama sees it this way and uses the power of his office to persuade the Dems to kick Joe the hell out. I don’t know why Reid made other offers. Lieberman should become the independent he claims to be. As for a filabuster proof vote, they can get it from liberal republicans or they don’t get it and they let the repubs talk themselves hoarse.
THANK YOU! There will always be time for recipes.
I’ve been wondering how & when the vicious attacks against Obama would begin. This is surely one way.
Good Morning Phoenix Woman
I’m sending this to my new BFF Chief of Staff Emmanuel
I think Reid’s trying to make sure that, when the Senate Democratic Caucus finally lowers the boom, that’s it’s made crystal-clear that Reid had more than bent over backwards to accomodate Lieberman — something that is quite clear if you look at the historical record, but which Lieberman’s friends in the press work to obscure — and he still shivved them.
Your conclusion is sound but will Harry have to Spine to get rid of Joe?
Why isn’t this committee broken up into two committees?
1,820 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Phoenix Woman and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Thanx for the heads up…combined with the rumor that Rahm is tryin’ ta shut down Howard Dean and the 50 state party organization, I think we need ta hit BOTH hard in the next two weeks…is MoveOn doin anything with either issue? It is clear the the corporatists and the oligarchy is consolidatin’ in the Obama administration and I don’t think even Obama is strong and clever enough ta snooker ‘em.
And what are the folks in Minnesota gunna do about the Independence Party saboteurs…the DFL is dead in Minnesota until they take those bastards down.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE NEXT BATTLE HAS BEGUN…THEY’RE TAKIN AWAY OUR 50 STATE ORGANIZERS!!
It makes a sickeningly perfect kind of sense, doesn’t it? Lieberman has, over the years, betrayed all of the Democrats he called his friends. He routinely campaigns on behalf of Republicans in Connecticut, and was doing so long before he signed up with McCain.
Holy Joesacrap, Batman!
Makes sense. It’s Liebermans nature to stab the Dems in the back. A traitor that needs to be strip of all power. Let him join the Republicons. The next step should be to replace Reid.
I think he will. In this case dumping Joe is the easier choice.
Some talking head on Tweety yesterday, when he was arguing that Lieberman had committed a mortal sin against the Ds and they should 86 him, asserted that the Ds like Lieberman as a person. My jaw dropped to the floor. I find him repulsive as a person. His whiney nasal self-righteousness.
Thanks for the outing. Ol’ Joe should be gone for incompetence, malfeasance, whatever since his committee did zip. Just start with the non-happening Katrina investigation and make the list. Do we lose anything by just leaving him in McLoser’s lap?
Joe covering for Boosh? How much can ‘he’ F*UP on the way out the door? BUSHED!!!
I keep waiting to hear talk of replacing Reid with Dodd. How does that work? Will that issue be addressed in January or is Reid in for next few years? Ditto for Pelosi.
foothillsmike: Why isn’t this committee broken up into two committees?
“The Committee for Useful Idiots” and “The Committee for Overlooking Constitutional Transgressions”?
That’s all part of the conundrum of why Gore tappend him. I never understood that, especially in hindsight. He did not even fare very well in the Cheney debate; that’s a pretty low bar.
Reid needs to grow a pair and dropkick Lieberman to the curb. No chairmanship, no caucus, no nothin’.
For those with a short memory, he slandered Obama from the pulpit of the RNC in St. Paul, after assuring Dems he would not do so.
And for those with a touch of naivete, what the hell would Lieberman do differently if he were booted from the caucus? suddenly become a wild-eyed James Dobson fanatic? If so, he’s a liar. Frankly, either way, he’s a liar.
He CANNOT stay in any position of authority in the Democratic caucus, period. Reid should be slapped for offering anything to this undependable SOB.
Someone on another blog, thinking out loud, wondered if Lieberman has some serious dirt on Reid; what else would explain this inexplicable behavior?
It’s time to contact Democratic senators and represntatives urging them to replace Reid and Pelosi. This is not the time to just sit back and let things play out. Grassroots activism had a dramatic impact on Obama’s victory and it shouldn’t stop now just because he was elected.
Harry won’t do it but Rahm will make sure.
this is an incredible post PW, thanx for making it, I have something to add;
it is also going to be about PREVENTING oversight of the previous administration
Joe gets a double edged sword, he gets to go after Obama AND he gets to tell the committee that going after bush is counter productive
I think I just hit this one out of the park
What a worm. Maybe Reid’s strategy of offering him VA was a way to bring Leiberweasel’s shenanigans to light.
Gore tapped him as cushion against any Lewinski talk. and all that groovy connecticut investment banker/insurance cash didn’t hurt either
Rahm may have Obama’s ear but to dismantle the organization that got Obama elected may prove to be a tough nut to crack. I certainly wouldn’t want to try stabbing Dean in the back.
LIEberman made his decision.
LIEberman chose his side.
Show him the door.
This is no !@#@!~ %$@!’n time to be totally tolerant of your colleagues..
Gore tapped him precisely for his holier-than-thou stance, to try to eliminate the slime of the Clinton administration. A perfect example of choosing someone for the wrong reason (Palin anyone?).
As for the Cheney debate, there are those who think Lieberman threw it deliberately.
ding ding ding. Of course.
And let’s not forget Lieberman’s sanctimonious, self-righteous betrayal of Clinton while, at the same time, he was kissing up to Newt.
‘zactly! Emmanuel is Clemenza
ok – I’m ignorant…who’s clemenza?
Obama is the organizer, and he benefitted from the plan. It seems hard to see why he would let that go in the face of magnificent success.
Every successful family needs an enforcer. We got a good one in Rahm.
It’s interesting how often I hear the Dems say “really like the guy, hate the ideology” but not so much the same from the R’s. They seem more focused on neutering the Dems so they “don’t pee on the furniture”. (Grover Norquist)
Godfather?
Toby, iirc, this is a different case of cross burning from the one you posted. Seems like the wingnuts are going ugly pretty quickly.

the portly, loyal capo to Don Corleone
Thanks PW.
digg
Yep….
As KO said last night to Joe LIEberman in the intro to his show (paraphrasing)….”You’ll get what we give you and like it!”.
… esp. when they want to keep this momentum going for the 2010 & 2012 elections, when the Dems could wind up with 67 seats in the Senate and give Barack free reins in his second term for some real reform.
Fema is part of Homeland Security I wonder if Bush is counting on Joe to hide stuff?
Clemenza aka Richard S. Castellano
It’s times like that when I want KO in DC instead of in front of a camera.
You know, I hadn’t even thought about why he wanted to hold on to this chairmanship other than to help continue to feed his narcissistic, power-hungry ego, so thanks for this update- now it’s even more imperative to ensure that Reid and the Democratic caucus find a backbone and tell Joe to go play with his Republican friends- it’s not even like he’s any real asset to the Democrats- remember the Alito cloture vote? Please. And this is the guy who said he would be “afraid” for America if the Dems got a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate- because, you know, the Dems pal around with terrorists don’t ‘cha know?
Evan Bayh and Barbara Boxer need to remember that Joe Lieberman doesn’t get to selfishly define “bipartisanship” as allowing to reap the fruits of the Democrats hard labor and hold onto one of the most powerful committees in the Senate.
Have you ever noticed that when it comes to bipartisanship, Joe thinks it’s everyone ELSE’s job to cut him slack and accommodate his wishes? It takes a lot of chutzpa to turn to Obama, the guy he helped smear for the past year, and say that if he [Joe] doesn’t get his cushy position back, it would be going against Obama’s purported claim of changing the tone in washington and working to heal a divided nation. Maybe in the spirit of true bipartisanship, Joe should voluntarily give up his Chairmanship in honor of the will of the people? Perhaps he needs to define “bipartisan” in a less selfish and grandiose way? Just a thought.
Lieberman has a right to support any candidate or policy he damn well chooses but he does not have a God-given right to retain Democratic chairmanships without taking any responsibility for his past statements and behavior. Reid needs to remember that with the Obama victory and Democratic gains in Congress, it is anti-thetical to conclude that the mandade for meaningful progressive change means holding onto the guy who acted as apologist for Bush and McCain’s lawbreaking and lies. It’s not revenge, it’s democracy in action. Joe made a choice and he chose unwisely.
Bye, bye Joe.
And Sen. Susan Collins. She said she was running for a 3rd term because she likes the power she has. Power? Oh that’s right! To cover up the crimes of the Bush Regime in the past, now, and forever! Between her and LIEberman, these two did zero oversight.
LOL I know. When he said it, I reflected back to the tv, “That’s right asshole!!!”. Poor LIEberman, his only friends on the planet are the googly-crazed-eyed neocons. Awwwwww, it’s sad.
You know, Joe should understand, from a religious standpoint if nothing else that you can’t be a xxx and a YYY at the same time.
Rahm opposed Dean’s 50 state strategy. Looks like he wants to have the last word. Big mistake.
Hiya eCAHN, care for some Coffee with Bailey’s on this chilly Saturday morning ?
I think KO and Rachel now have the ears of a growing audience, which includes TV Executives and we’ll be seeing more revelations of BushCo after Jan 20th.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Joe is an Israeli mole.
As in alot of Stuff? Youbetcha…won’t be just the “W” keys missing from the WH offices. I bet they have already called the UHaul to get stuff outa there. So scary to me. How to list the laws that have been broken? We can start with ignoring subpoenas + illegal war + torture
I wouldn’t be surprised if he one day runs for the Knesset for the Likud party.
Hard to believe anyone, anywhere in the Democratic party still opposes the 50 state strategy. Oh, and the one guy who does gets COS? Aggravating.
*Holding out cup.*
Thanks. It’s actually pretty warm here: 60. Misty rain though. Will try to do some outdoor stuff in a bit, though.
Or just a mole, living under the ground.
Kinda looks like one doesn’t he?
Then I would think Obama must have a reason…certainly not one that I know, however.
And McCain. I’ve seldom seen anyone so white.
It seemed to me that Reid’s statements to the press, following the meeting, were sufficiently explicit to mean that there would be punishment. I don’t think the Dems are going to be close enough to 60 that his presence in the caucus could mean anything or be reliable on critical votes anyway. I would guess that he’ll caucus with the Repubs, except they all seem to really hate being in the minority, having once tasted the power of the majority.
The DNC’s funding is winding down with the end of a major election cycle. From what I’ve heard, it could just as easily be the standard hunkering down at the end of a cycle. I was alarmed when I heard the rumor, but on further thought I’m wondering if it might be not quite what it’s being made out to be. I remember the tsuris that came out of another DNC personnel change under Dean, and how some folk were putting the worst possible spin on his actions then. Still, if it really is an attempt to ditch the fifty-state strategy, we need to be sounding the alarm, and Ian’s post last night did just that.
We’ve had a terrific autumn and lots of golden leaves are still on the Maple trees.
This morning we were at the freezing mark and we might get some flurries tomorrow.
OT but does anyone know if FDL will get any tickets to Obama’s innaugaration? Sure would like to be in D.C. on that day. Was their for Clinton’s first and it was a blast.
Joe pretty much hates America and only loves us when our soldiers are dying for his Israel. Other than that, he don’t give two shits about our country and is loyal to the warmongers of the American Taliban War Party (the GOP).
Someone should tattoo this to the inside of Harry’s eyelids: JOE MUST GO!
(H/T Luckovich)
That doesn’t mean the 50 state strategy is going end.
Yeah, Repulicons are real junkies to power. Their withdrawal symptoms are going to be very ugly.
That surprises me, too. I mean, he’s shivved the Clintons early and often for the past decade, even after they went to bat for him in 2006.
I’m cynical. Looks to me like the wrong people are retaining power in the party after their ideas have been proven wrong. Rahm may be a partisan, but does it matter? If he advocates the wrong strategies and people he is of no help.
Thank you!
No, but it seems counterintuitive and counterproductive to promote the people who advocate a losing strategy (and losing ideology since he’s a conservative dem.)
Most leaves have been gone for nearly a month here, except for those trees that keep them all winter long. (Do you know that the leaves don’t fall until the bud forms and pushed the dead leaf off? Most buds form in the autumn, but some don’t form until spring.) In fact, there is one area that I need to rake & cart the leaves away because it is kind of swampy. It seemed to be a much more major job this year for some reason. It’s all done except for the last 2-3 loads of leaves, and I don’t think I can finish it off until it dries up, as my tractor tires will leave ruts if I do it when the ground is wet, and it’s close to the front of the house, so unsightly.
Lieberman is a nothing. He believes in nothing and stands for nothing. If he were even remotely honorable he would have left the Dem Party and become a Repub if he wanted to support McC. He wanted it both ways and I’m sure never expected to be punished. Why should he – he’s gotten away with everything up until now.
He should at this point be expelled from the Senate — in the spirit of unity, of course.
Actually, Bush will make a big, BIG show of being ultra-nice to Obama’s people — if only so he can say “See? SEEEE??! I’m being NICER than Clinton was!” But the transition team might not want to use the 500 BlackBerries that GSA’s offered them. The office space and salaries, however, are very helpful — most of these folk are on long-term leave from other jobs and they gotta eat too.
His loyalty is plain. Never liked the guy.
So here’s one meme going around DC after the election. I haven’t tried to figure out whether it’s true or not, but folks here should know. It is that the 06 and 08 D congresscritter classes are more conservative that the extant Ds because they were elected in districts that used to be R. Is that accurate & if so, would that explain why Reid is treating Lieberman with kid gloves?
The only leaves still up are the Autumn Gold ones and to see them stretching for miles is breathtaking !
If I were closer, I’d give you a hand … do you compost the leaves or are they picked up as yard waste ?
Hope that Obama’s team has the WH completely swept for surveillance bugs. Probably want to do it at DOJ as well.
OK I’m a tinfoiler. . . but I sure wouldn’t want any electronicdevice offered to me by this administration. Are they automatically wired into the RNC HQ? No thanks!
Probably oak trees that typically hold their foliage through winter.
ya, we could unite him with his real party
OT, but I’m going to go to my grandson’s ballgame and wanted to get this bit of snark down before I forgot it.
Watching Mika Brezinski last night, it occurred to me that RNC lawyers might want to check her closet for any missing wardrobe, before flying to Alaska. Otherwise, there is no rational explanation for her obsesseive admiration for Palin.
Hysterical cartoon and so true. We need to send that cartoon link to ole Joe himself, here:
http://lieberman.senate.gov/co…..ding=issue
And here’s a list of Connecticut zip codes so Joe’s office will be forced to read your email:
http://www.555us.com/555ct/555ct_zipcodes.htm
Just make up a name and address.
Guess I’m not alone in my tinfoil.
My place used to be a farm, and farmers had dumps. I have a huge one, filled with barbed wire, old stoves, and every type of bottle, can, plastic that man ever made. It is, of course, in one of the prettiest spots on the property: a steep slope down to a pretty little stream. The reason it’s located there is because you can just throw stuff over the edge. So I take my leaved there & throw them over the edge on top of the dump. “Compost” would be a fancy word for what I do.
Me neither. We were voting for Gore in 2000 and not for LIEberman.

Oh, exactly.
They’re blaming China for this:

Not paranoid just recognizing the nature of the opposition.
Nice list!
No one has mentioned this yet, but when Lieberman was on the ropes in CT after losing the Democratic primary Obama came to CT to campaign for Lieberman’s run as an independent. Now I disagreed with Obama on that, but the point is Lieberman not only didn’t return the favor, he stabbed Obama in the back. Around the time that Lieberman announced his support for McCain this year Obama was reportedly seen on the Senate floor up in Lieberman’s face and demonstrably angry. I’d love to have heard that conversation. Obama has a personal history of Lieberman’s backstabbing. I think that Obama, behind the scenes of course, will quietly extract his revenge. Buhbye Joe!
another good one
Well, Kay, supposedly, the Chinese government has whole teams of IT people who do nothing by hack around 24/7
Yep, he loves Susan Collins because between the two of them, they did no oversight of the Bush Regime for years and spent their days protecting them. As far as I’m concerned, they both should be expelled from their committee. Neither one of them do the right thing in the name of the American people. Oh, but you can bet your sweet ass….THEY’LL BE FINDING WAYS TO IMPEACH PRESIDENT OBAMA!
Assholes. Both of them.
More Republicon outsourcing.
True and according to the radio news report I heard on this subject, hacking into the White House servers is cinchy. Nice. After 8 years of George Bush The Mighty Unitary Executive Who Protected Everything, well, he didn’t do his job. In fact, I’m sure he’s got his programmers right now fooling around with the servers to spy on the Obama Administration.
Don’t suppose you mean that as a double entrendre?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Plumbers
Yeah, would China really be interested in the evolution of policy within a campaign?
in addition to petitions be sure to contact your senators directly- and state that he hasn’t been a good chairman of committee so that alone should be reason enough..(i know, the concept of doing a good job vs longevity doesn’t go over big in the Senate but we can try anyways)
Rahm was the leading DLC mouthpiece and a major war supporter in the House. Obama has effectively neutralized that by making him COS. Illinois will have to hold a special election to replace him and he won his district with over 70% each time he ran. I’d say his district is solidly Democratic and we have a chance to pick up one more seat for a progressive. I think Rahmbo is going to find that running the WH staff is going to be task enough without interfering with the Party. I also think Rahmbo is going to find out he has less influence on the Party as COS than he did as a Representative. As of 20 Jan he will no longer be an elected official, he’ll be a paid employee of the WH.
Part of the demonization of China program. In case we need another enemy.
Perhaps there’s a duplicate effort between the Obama campaign and the 50 State Strategy. Since Obama seems to be efficient at targeting resources, and with the impending financial crunch resources are going to be scarce, and he’s consolidating.
As COS I don’t see where Rahm will leading the DNC.
I hope so, but it seems like promoting the less worthy a la Bush. As I said, I’m skeptical.
Don’t know if it has been suggested yet; If we give LIEberLiar a going away present, would that make him go away?
There’s a story at Salon re Rahm entitled “Barack Obama’s designated a**hole.” I loved it.
Exactly. ;-)
I’ll have to check it out thanks.
Well having a powerful position is influence. Works very closely with the Prez, so has his ear. I’d rather see Rahm relegated to Dem obscurity because that’s what he’s earned.
Rahm will have his hands full in DC. I don’t see him doing much with DNC direction.
I doubt if Reid would have made his conversation with Lieberman public if he did not have the votes in his vest pocket to deal with Lieberman’s chairmanship in the Democratic Caucus. You don’t show your cards unless you know you have a winning hand. So the thing to do is SUPPORT Reid’s move, and ask Democratic Senators to support their leadership. That is the winning hand.
There is and will be a number of good reasons for Government Operations to conduct tough investigations — we have lots of dysfunctional agencies and departments that need a fire lit under them to improve performance. Some of it is the sloth of the Bush Administration, and other parts of it will eventually be Obama’s responsibility. We do ourselves proud to open up messes and failures to the light of day. That doesn’t mean you are running a coup, it means you are laying the grounds for reforms. For instance it strikes me right now that looking into FEMA’s response to IKE would be very much in order — and point the way to reorganization and redefinition of mission. Democrats truth telling about Government Failures and Democrats proposing reforms — that is what will get us ten more Senators in the next go-round.
One thing I want Gov. Operations to address is outsourcing. Too many of our agencies have been stripped of their expertise, the good gray civil servants who know how to manage and accomplish their missions. We’ve exchanged competent agencies for large contracts to private industry that somehow are never fully accountable. Read Tim Shorrock “Spies for Hire” on how Outsourcing has shortchanged Intelligence Agencies, read Thomas Frank’s “The Wrecking Crew” on how it works across departments and agencies. We’ve all read some of these books while in the wilderness during the Bush years, and now that our folk are back in charge, it is important to highlight all that critique, and force changes. This is not going to come from many people inside the beltway — the specific demands need to come from the rest of the country. So in addition to getting rid of Lieberman in this key committee, we need to be telling Reid precisely what we want the committee to do under a new chair.
I dislike Lieberman with the best of them. He worked in 1990 to support Rudy Boschwitz when Paul Wellstone beat him in that Senate Race, and I’ve understood Lieberman’s interests very well since that time. He was here this fall supporting Coleman against Franken. But we need to be very careful with always personalizing objections, even if some of our reasons are fairly personal. I’d rather send Lieberman on his way for failure to do effective oversight of FEMA based on Katrina and Ike data, than to rest it on personal matters. I think you move Senate Leadership to act much more effectively if you emphasize core issues such as competent Government Agencies.
I’m kinda suspicious about that, too. The Bushies are saying that the Chinese were/are doing it supposedly to glean insight on the fopo stances of the Obama and McCain campaigns, particularly towards China. But neither campaign said much at all about China — and if you want to know McCain’s fopo stances, just look at the lobbyists who are on his team.
Reid made the offers to save Lieberman’s face, if JoeL decides to caucus with the Ds.
If JoeL goes over to the GOoPers (in fact as well as deed), then Reid can say that he tried to work with JoeL, but it wasn’t his fault that JoeL left.
Eggzacktly.
Obama could have had that little confrontation behind closed doors. Instead, he had it where he knew there’d be cameras.
Lieberman didn’t take the hint. Instead, he doubled down. Ooops.
That makes sense to me. It shows that you are considering this issue. That’s a good thing.
Wow, that was cogent, well reasoned and sound. Can’t I just hate the bastard because he’s a little prick?
I guess the era of the high-road is in full swing. I’m going to have to adjust to people who actually utilize intelligent discourse to inform their actions…wyrd!
Sorry you didn’t get your choice there, as I know there are a lot of people who agree with you.
As californiarealitcheck says at 104 he’s going to have his hands full, and the bottom line is Obama will make the call. If Rham doesn’t like it or doesn’t follow through, he’ll lose the power he crave so much.

If Joe goes with the Rs he will have really shown his colors. He always talks about doing the right thing for the country but there is no way he can believe in the principles of both the Democrats and the Rs – just not possible. so he truly believes in only himself. Himself is a twit.

Thanks.
Pssst… fresh fun here.
Yup. It’s also why he’s putting it up to a caucus vote.
I really don’t hold that much vitriol but, like Sara, I am from Minnesota. While we have not completely enshrined the late Senator, Paul Wellstone, we do hold a certain reverence for his memory. Joe Lieberman is a stain on that remembrance of things past.
I’d rather he just went away but the irony that Prairie Sunshine proposes (following post), in having Lieberman have to face what his actions wrought, is a powerful proposition. But, I don’t know if those brave veterans deserve someone as completely ineffectual as Joe Lieberman, just so he can be shown as an ironic example resulting from years of poor choices. Veterans actually deserve much better.
What part of ‘traitor’ does Harry not understand? JOE MUST GO!
Here is what Joe has to consider on becoming a Republican. With the loss of his major committee, he will lose about 20 staff slots on Government Operations which he has appointed. He will also suffer a small loss of slots in his Senate Office operations, by going into the minority. And a good many of his Staff may not want to work for an “official” Republican.
NPR had a piece the other day indicating that Democratic Staff on the hill right now can pull down half a million a year if they move to K-Street, but the K-Street houses are oversupplied with Republicans right now, and there are simply no jobs for Republican Hill Staffers. Firms are merging, and cutting Republican Staff — making the situation more iffy. Joe has to think about the position he puts his leading staff in while he considers a party switch.
Nother consideration. In Lieberman’s race against Lamont in 06, Lieberman managed to maintain the Black Democratic Electorate in Bridgeport and New Haven — they stayed with him in the primary and in the General. But I don’t think he can count on them any more — all one would have to do is repeat some of his anti-Obama stuff, and those voters would be long gone. I think the Dem Electorate in CT is about 15% Black. I doubt if he could count on taking Black Voters with him should he plan to run again in 2012, when, one should observe, Obama would be on the ballot. I think CT Black Voters ought to be up front and in public asking questions about why the Senator they supported did what he did this year. But likewise — now is also the time to begin to build a base in the CT Black Communities for a different candidate. If the plan is to run Lamont again — then he needs to work on that base. He didn’t get it last time. People from the CT Obama Campaign need building into a new campaign effort. Should Lieberman try to run again, either as an independent or a Republican, this process of cutting him off from base needs doing.
Liieberman may have access to AIPAC or other funds. I’m fairly confident it’s a matter of money. That seems to trump principle every time.
My thoughts were running along those same lines. Liebermann ,McCains first choice for VP, has ties to CUFI[Christians United for Israel],John Hagee’s Assembly of God organization.Liebermann gave their keynote address this summer in DC,AFTER McCain diavowed(?) Hagee. Now, McCain was in charge of the Abramof investigation at the BIA. McCain WITHEL MOST of the damning evidence, its tsill under lock and key. Much related to GOP foreign funding. Lieberman and McCain are BOTH gatekeepers-that’s why McCain wanted Joe for VP.Check out this link for some REALLY interesting info: SENATOR McCOVER-UP: Abramoff & the GOP Foreign Money Machine

Lie-la lie-lie, lie-lie-lie, lie LIE-BERMAN.
Dont’ get personal?? Harry knows best??
Screw that attitude and screw what Reid says!
The matter should be removed from his control and sent to an independent ethics panel. WE’re here today, precisely because of Harry’s personal friendship with Lieberman, and his inept control of the Senate.
Let’s consider the following: Joe won his re-election by telling the Connecticut voters that Harry Reid had promised he would retain his seniority and Chair even though he was now an Independent. That promise not only cut the legs out from under the real Democrat Lamont, but stirred the Republicans into vote for him.
Harry’s response about Joe’s claims of an unethical pre-election promise was “I made no such commitment to Joe.” Harry Reid lied.
Now comes Joe Lieberman,in a second promise to voters that he would hold a 2nd hearing on the Administrations handling of Katrina, if elected, since Harry Reid had promised he would retain his Chair of the relevant oversight Committee.
Republicans get Joe into office. Joe is, in fact, given his seniority and Chair back and in an apparent quid pro quo to his Republican supporters and a personal rebuke to the Democrats for not supporting him, Independent Senator Joe Lieberman cancels the promised 2nd hearing on one of the worst natural disasters in American history, and the beginning of the end of both the Republican party, and the Bush Administration.
Harry AND Joe should both be ordered to step aside.
that’s an angle I hadn’t thought of: I’ll be addressing this later today and making sure my monday AM calls to DC will specifically speak to Lieberman undermining the new president the way he did to clinton.
what a disgusting piece of shit he is, a vile traitor, a liar and untrustworthy. He really needs to have his ass handed to him.
LIEberman:Spinocchio Joe
I’m late to this discussion, but I am so glad to read someone doing this analysis, which I think is spot on. Thanks very much, PW.
The anger against Joe Lieberman goes back to 2006. He was not the only Senator who continued to support a forever occupation.
But even then he was unique as a Democrat in going out of his way to taunt those whose support he demanded.
I’ve signed petitions, written to my senator and representative, to Sen. Reid, to Rachel Maddow, and to my friends, urging them to sign petitions. If we all work at it – we can get rid of the trojan horse.
Just Like Schumer and Mukasey …Rahm and JoeZell are co-Religionists…not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Thoughtful post Sara, thanks.
