It was only a short time ago that every Democrat in the Senate was trashing MoveOn, refusing to stand up for them as the right tore them apart. Many of us argued that it was really stupid and irresponsible to help dismantle a critically important part of progressive infrastructure (for which I personally earned a hit-piece from Bill-O, in which he called me a "fascist").
Well, in the 2008 election it looks like MoveOn delivered:
After endorsing President-elect Obama in February, MoveOn.org Political Actions 4.5 million members contributed more than $88 million towards Barack Obamas presidential campaign, the organization announced today. And more than 1 million MoveOn members worked in a trail-blazing field effort in coordination with the Obama campaign.
In the 2008 presidential campaign, MoveOn and its members:
- Contributed more than $58 million directly to Obama's campaign
- Raised and spent more than $30 million in independent election efforts
- Delivered up to 600,000 battleground state volunteers. 400,000 more volunteers participated from non-battleground states
- Added 1 million young members from June to September 2008, and mobilized them online and offline
- Registered more than 500,000 new young Obama supporters in battleground states
With 4.5 million members, MoveOn is now bigger than they NRA. Maybe our leaders should think about that for a while.

MoveOn Rocks, and so do you Jane. Vichy Dems need not apply.
Not only should they consider that - the Dems who were slinging trash and allowing others to sling it unobstructed should be made to remember that those MoveOn people both have memories, and can support the challenger in those Dems’ next primary.
Steny? Can you hear us now?
Hey, Twisted. How are you?
Seconded.
digg
they call us what they are, if they draft dodgers they call us anti military, if they are growing the government they call us tax and spend, if they are taking our money they call us criminals
so billo called you what he is, surprise surprie
If Bill-O doesn’t like them, they must have great value.
Hey Martini.
MoveOn is now bigger than they NRA…
hadn’t made that connection yet - in your face Wayne!
damn sweeeet
Exactly, people should wear being an enemy of BillO the Clown as a badge of honor.
Hi Jane,
I joined Move On this past spring made several donations to Obama thru them.
They are a great organization ,and showed their political might Tuesday night !
Now let’s see what Move-On can do in 2010.
Unfortunately, for dozens of Congressional campaigns in non-battleground states, all of the volunteer resources and much of the money was sucked into the Obama organization.
Can we redirect this back into taking out some of the most hateful of the remaining Republicans. Look at Rohrabacher, Calvert, Bilbray for example, all races where Republican incumbents in so-called safe districts were held to less than 55% of the vote.
It’s time to get rid of the crooks and liars who still remain.
NRA = Patriotic Americans
MoveOn = DFH’s
That is the old stereotype.
STUNNING!
I just had to repeat those stats, I am dumbfounded
Long Live DFHs….!!!!!!
moveon.org has shown how effective it is… much to the chagrin of the many defeated rethugs!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!
Balrog!
Good to see you here again.
my dad and plenty of democrats are memebers of the nra
I do not believe we are on the right side of that issue all of the time.
I think we need another organization that lobbies for gun ownership but also lobbies for gun protections and regulations
what would have happened if there really was an overthrow attempt by the administration before the election?
I believe those in the nra would have been among the insurgency against those who would overthrow this government
“With 4.5 million members, MoveOn is now bigger than they NRA. Maybe our leaders should think about that for a while.”
Our leaders don’t have the brains that god gave a retarded armadillo.
I’m with Pach: FIRE HARRY REID.
OMG the Betrayus ad totally backfired!
Yeah that is a great point End the War, money to rebuild the National Infrastructure and National Healthcare. If you don’t support this we will look for a Primary Challenger for you.
I am open to changing or adding to the list.
ps. mike malloy, one of the most radical leftists I have ever heard will never give up his gun
I am with pach as well
we need a majority leader with the balls to do our work inspite of the minority party or his corporate sponsors
ooo, how can I get one>???
Maybe we should seize the NRA from within?
Dear Jane!
What a glorious week this is turning out to be. I find I can sleep, finally, and NOT wake up every morning curled in a fetal position.
I have to confess a huge failing, though. I find the untidy pile of .. stuff .. that some kind soul referred to as the imploding McC campaign is, quite simply, a source of delightful entertainment.
They earned every crumb of crud they own selves. That be the honest truth.
But enough of that. Now, to work. Obama/Biden will still need us to help as best we can.
Thank dog for MoveOn, AND for your precious Lake.
Thank YOU and all the pups!
The problem is not now the Republicans or Steny but Obama. As I wrote last night, most of his advisers and likely candidates for the Cabinet and other government posts are DLCers, neoliberals, and Clinton retreads. Political and media leaders are pushing the message that Obama must govern from the center or even center-right. I see no reason to think that real change is coming to Washington or that Obama is intent on delivering it. What I see is an Establishment that may trim back on a few of Bush’s more egregious excesses, but that’s about it.
I know there is another organization that did come out for Obama. My dad use to get the NRA’s magazine when I was young. The NRA is not just about hunting anymore it is more like we-can-own-any-bloody-gun-we-want(and cop killer bullets too) organization. Too extreme to the right for me.
There ain’t no place I’d rather be.
McCain was all about defending the Surge not that voters seemed to care with the Market going down in flames but the Surge, the General, Move On, Acorn.
None of the GOPs buzz words…well buzzed, I think most Americans have run out of patience with lies.
Jane, only if you care to respond,
(1)How nervous were you when McCain first picked Palin?
(2)If the economy had not tanked, would Obama/Democrats have won?
(((Boss Hamsher)))
-and it is apparent the cocktail weenie set has yet to take full measure of Blue America. fine with me. 14+ winners as of this morning
related note Stoller is advocating Van Hollen to replace Rahm as Caucus Chair (where have I heard this ? lol) primarily because he worked well with orgs like MoveOn.
What is a “member” of MoveOn?
Is every email address they have a “member” even if no one uses that email account anymore?
I guess we’ll be bookends. O.K.?
If you have concerns, lean into the problem, rather than grumbling in a corner. You’re a terrific, articulate fella full of worthy ideas. Why not go talk directly to Obama. eh?
Yes. I’m serious.
this is a great idea
you know the republicans started taking control of the media and look how effective they’ve become.
American Hunters and Shooters Association
Jane’s got news upstairs
Robert Gibbs Named As Obama Press Secretary
Oreally, Limpballs and the rest of ‘em throw these terms (fascist, socialist, terrorist, blah blah blah) around so much that they’ve really become meaningless. Just a bunch of old men yelling at clouds. Yeah, words can hurt, but always look at the source.
I’m hoping that Obama’s election (suck on THAT, wingnuts!), is merely the first act in the passion play that is the Republican party’s total and complete meltdown. I don’t want Bill and Rush to shut up. I want them to cannibalize the Party over Palin’s future role while urging the GOP to lurch further to the right.
And please, Bill, Sean, and Rush, do keep calling us names. It’s working soooo well.
I agree they are too extreme, that’s why we need a more pratcical organization or we need to take them over from within
that’s a good question
Hi Hugh.
I did a little diary in Oxdown,
Brainstorming about TARP and Wall Street Pay Cuts. If you get a chance to look at it, I’d be interested in any comments you have.
what we need to do is get that organization some progressive play
we need to make them more of the gun ownership mainstream then the nro
Am pretty sure I’ve heard there *is* such an organization and a little research would probably produce a name. And if there isn’t one, there’s nothing keeping people who don’t think the right to bare arms is the *only* one from starting such a group.
To be honest without the meltdown in September/October, it would have been a toss up. Even with that kick in the stomach, 48% of the electorate still went for McCain. Just aother reason why I say we live in the Age of Stupid. 8 years of idiocy and disaster, another Republican emptysuit, his totally insane sidekick, and the economy going into the crapper before their eyes and 48% of voters wanted more of the same. Maybe the Age of Stupid is too kind. Maybe I should call it the Age of the Batshit Crazy.
Right on, Mr. Hugh. MoveOn is going to have a LOT of work to do to prevent Obama from magically morphing the entire party into Rockefeller Republicanism. The guy looks a lot like Bill Clinton with better zipper discipline.
Us Dirty F*$&%(%@ Hippies need to stick together, now more than ever.
Hey, if Obama wants to talk to me, he can send an email. I’m available.
Will do.
That’s the feeling I got also.
I think the repugs shot down their own campaign. Their constant attacks boomeranged. People are sick and tired of all negative alldedamtime.
Seriously troubled times call for competent leadership, not cheap-shot grifters.
They made their own bed, shot themselves in the foot, yadda yadda yadda.
It was dumb. Thank heaven for small favors.
sorry to intrude.
choose your own path.
i’ll do likewise, on mine.
Well, Jane, isn’t it good. Poor Bill-O, “He can’t help it…” He manages to be wrong almost all the time.
I hope that MoveOn remains a grass roots, ground up LIBERAL organization dedicated to promoting good governance. We don’t need to “go after” the criminals leaving (deserting) the government; let’s concentrate on rooting out the imbedded ones. We should rejoin the International Criminal Court ASAP and offer our unrestricted cooperation to the rest of the world, helping to bring war criminals to justice in a world court specifically set up to deal with the lowest form of humanity, and thereby purging our collective guilt.
What a load of wank. I want to see moveon’s independent audit reports.
Jane,
Did you miss Countdown last night? KO’s Worst Person in the World made it official: It doesn’t matter what O Really?, Bill Kristol (Meth), Rushbo have to say.
Although I’d consider being on O’Liely’s Enemy List a badge of honor.
The statistics you cite are pretty meaningless without context (Eric in comment #31 alluded to this). I contributed my time and money to the Obama campaign, but not because MoveOn’s emails asked me to. Lots of liberally inclined people devoted lots of resources to the Obama campaign, and I don’t appreciate MoveOn taking credit for that. It’s wrong to assume that these contributions wouldn’t have been made, or the extra voters registered, without MoveOn’s efforts. Had MoveOn’s members volunteered directly with the Obama campaign instead of feeding this extra bureaucracy with a penchant for discrediting its own causes, our victory may have been more impressive yet.
Also, what does “in coordination with the Obama campaign” mean, exactly? Isn’t that illegal?
Finally, comparing MoveOn to the NRA is absurd. NRA members all agree on their cause, whereas MoveOn’s “members”, who pay no membership dues, do not. This comment should make that much clear at least.
As an Obama team leader, and minor Dem official in Chester County Pa, I will tell you they did a magnificent job in guiding out of state volunteers to my small city. I could not believe the quality and selfless work they did. Thank you MoveOn, and thanks vols from NY, NJ, MD, DE, DC for coming and allowing us to crush the GOP here. The first time Chester County voted Blue for pres since Jackson. Yes that Jackson.
yeah, but they still got the guns.
maybe we should think about that for a while.
No idea whether he intended to or not, but Barack Obama did the blogosphere a huge favor by snubbing it early in the election.
Think about it: Are we politicians? Hell no. We aren’t journalists, either. We’re bloggers - a completely miscellaneous aggregation of concerned citizens that like to opine and inform each other about what’s going on in our country and around the world.
As volunteers of our time and opinions, bloggers get no private benefits from either journalism or politics, and that’s incredibly important. There is almost no money involved and almost no power, either. Blogs are run on shoestring budgets, which gives them a chance to avoid influences not based on merit.
Blogs aren’t perfect. We get flame wars, concern trolls and frustrations with this rapidly developing technology. But as long as access is free and connections run wide, blogs are able to communicate news and ideas that open people’s eyes to what’s really going on. And that changes things. It changed this election, and it will make it increasingly difficult for propagandists to fool the public in the future.
Meanwhile, blogs have a vital role to play in the aftermath of this election. Barack Obama sent a lot of mixed signals during his campaign, some liberal, some downright neocon. It’s up to the blogosphere to make sure that his better angels dominate during his first four years. Let’s push him towards FDR before the MSM and right wingers make him into another Gerald Ford.
The Betrayus ad totally backfired because no one backed them up.
Uh, that was sarcasm.
Geez, do I have to /sn every time around here?
