There are rumors that Richard Lugar and Chuck Hagel are seriously being considered for the Secretary of State gig, and Sam Stein reports that Lugar has the inside track (although Lugar has said he’s not interested).
One of the biggest challenges the new Secretary of State will face is dealing with whatever replaces the Kyoto agreement. Hagel has a 9% 2008 rating from the League of Conservation Voters. Lugar scores 18%. (PDF) Are they really the best people for the job?
Further, the Bush Administration has been murderous in its policies regarding women’s health, choice and reproductive rights around the world. Lugar and Hagel are both rabidly anti-choice.
Women turned out big in this election — unmarried women in particular voted 70-29 for Obama. I don’t imagine Dick Lugar, Chuck Hagel and Larry Summers were exactly what they had in mind when they turned up at the voting booth.
Susan Rice and John Kerry are also in the mix, and the decision has evidently not yet been made. If we really are intent on cleaning up our image around the world, please let’s send someone who represents our best and brightest in such a critical post. Let’s not have some Republican relic who sends the wrong message about women’s rights.

Jane!
Yes. Let’s not alieniate the people that turned out in droves for Dems.
Yep – don’t poke me in the eye with a sharp stick..just yet.
I expect no more from Obama.
this is not negotiable.
Is this the one cabinet post that the Clinton’s didn’t tell Obama who to pick?
And what would be wrong with Hillary herself?
Okay. Don’t answer that.
Bill Richardson is the obvious pick dontcha think? can you spell”Xperience?
I wouldlike to see ill Richardson in that role but then again Ii don’t want New Mexico to lose such an awesome governor
not to mention se habla espanol
should read — Bill Richardson
who is AG in NM? who gets to be gov if richardson is US AG?
Last night on the news Richardson was among all lists for AG. Today his name is nowhere to be found. Quoi?
Agreed. I can understand why Obama wants Lugar and Hagel near him as he negotiates his difficult position, but at State? Women need to speak up.
OOPS sorry total spaceout . I meant he was on lists for Secy State. my bad
At least it’s nice that half his transition team is women.
Neither Lugar nor Hegel exude “Change” — Mr. President-elect, I’m sure you can do better than this.
It wouldn’t be hard.
Chuck Hagel was the CEO of EES the electronic voting company. His work in the Senate has often been admirable; his respect and friendship with Barack Obama is heartening…but he has not redeemed himself from the havoc the “poor” design of e-voting machines has voisted on the American people. I would not be comfortable with him as Secretary of State. My employment record follows me. To paraphrase: the jobs one choses to work have consequences.
The lists we saw yesterday were pure speculation, generated by journalists, the blogs, and wish-listers in the party. They weren’t leaked from the very disciplined Obama organization. More likely that leaks are coming from the people who want the jobs.
My fantasy pick would be Amb Joe Wilson for Sec of State…
Plus Richardson came out early for Obama in NM. You’d think that would earn him serious consideration, along with his other obvious assets.
Not a bad pick wilson, but too much political baggage is my guess.
If Obama needs to throw a bone to the rethugs how about Grassly at Agriculture
Kind of a funny MO for self promotion isnt’ it? Wish we could use that method for you know macArthur grants and stuff.
Grassly???? arrrggghhh
haven’t heard beans about Richardson of late.
btw new post
Rahmbo Takes Obama Post
I hear you Jane.
I imagine the focus for Obama is on Lugar’s past work with Nunn on nonproliferation and Hagel’s joint work with Biden on foreign policy. Hagel has been able to speak out against Bush and Bush’s Iraq policies. Nunn-Lugar have had some outstanding ME nonproliferation work.
Nonetheless, I do hear you.
With our needs on ME policy, who would you recommend?
I was wondering if Obama might choose Madeline Albright. Even though she’s a Clinton “re-tread,” she certainly could hit the ground running and wouldn’t need “prep” time.
Thoughts?
How about Valerie for Chief of the CIA?
She was quite snarky during the campaign. Plus she’s a retread. What’s wrong with Richardson? I like his schtick.
What is the strategy to get Obama to do the right thing? Obama was inundated with thousands of emails which implored him to reject the FISA gutting. His response was disingenuous at best. If the netroots attempt to influence him, he may dig in his heels. He already knows how we feel about this. The impact on the world from the Bush worldview wrt birth control, condoms, and disease prevention has been a total catastrophy. What is a viable course to stop Obama from making these terrible selections?
Someone who doesn’t want to throw our political weight around without good reason.
Someone intelligent.
Someone who is not a f*cking conservative dinosaur.
And dear Ghu, not Larry Summers, not for any job. His expressed views on the abilities of women should keep him on the sh*t list for the rest of his life. Let him go do stuff for the Mormons or the Baptists or the Roman Catholics, since they have similar views of women.
Agree — Summers’ gaff at hahvad that women weren’t as mathematically adept/inclined whatever was revealing.
I loves me some Madge, but I’d suggest Susan Rice, who’s been Obama’s foreign policy adviser and who worked for Albright at State.
I like Bill Richardson too, but I do think I’d pick Rice over Richardson.
There’s that, and his takedown of Professor Cornel West, which didn’t win him any points for racial sensitivity. And I don’t buy the “misunderstood college president” line he put out one bit.
you tube is always the answer it seems to me
NO!
I guess that Jane tosses out Governor Richardson over his lack of fervor for Pro-Choice. Understandable, but I also support Richardson.
There is absolutely no reason to “throw a bone” to the Republicans. Obama was elected as a Democrat, and I for one want a Democratic administration. There are more than enough fully qualified Democrats to fill 3 administrations.
My mistake. Governor Richardson is Pro-Choice.
If everything policy-wise is to come out of the White House, it probably doesn’t matter who’s appointed to cabinet posts. It could be Attila the Hun.
