It is up to us to continue to push, to fight for the changes we wish to see. To realize the dream of a more perfect union left to us by the Founders, toward which we must strive every single day. During last night’s speech, Barack Obama said the following:
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can’t solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it’s been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years – block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.
What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek – it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers – in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.
Let us resolve to hold him to that promise of listening — because we will almost certainly have points of disagreement along the way.
But the fact that this may be a president who reaches out to opposing views, who considers criticisms and questions, is such a refreshing change from the current WH resident that I needed to pause for a moment and savor the potential of having a grown-up in the White House for a change.
Whatever changes we see, it will be up to all of us — every single one of us — to push them forward.
This is not a time to be silent, or to shrink from the challenges yet to come. For they will come, the ones we already face and the ones as yet unseen. Let us resolve today that we will not rest until the better angels of our American nature have all become reality.
A change is gonna come…and we’ve all got a lot of work to do in the days ahead to make that happen.

So proud. So happy. This morning a city bus driver, who’d noticed my Obama stickers, motioned to me to roll down my van window. “Now we’re going to get our hope and change!” he said, his face radiant.
Morning all…still trying to wake up here after a late night…
Goooood morning Christy!
I love that last night Bush had to listen to a mass of revelers hooting and hollering right under his bedroom window, but maybe that’s too vindictive for the tone Obama set last night. I’ll go sit in the corner for a few…
My 16 year old son suddenly played this for me last night when the election was called for Obama. We talked about how, while this doesn’t completely reflect Barack Obama’s own personal story, it reflected the story of so many people, many of whom never lived to see this event, and many who were wiping tears of joy from their eyes last night so their vision was clear enough to see Barack Obama take the stage as the winner.
And I was so proud of my son, that he got it.
Those are great thoughts on a great day. Change for the better is indeed up to all of us, and it begins now.
Thanks, Christy, very well said. Congratulations for all the hard work you and the other folks at the Lake have put in.
Now we have more work to do. One of my early goals is to have the United States formally rejoin the International Criminal Court. Dropping out of it was one of Bush’s first moves. Going back in should be one of Obama’s. This will be a tough battle but it would mean so much for international opinion.
all year long!

EPU’d from the last thread… In his NYT blog “By the Numbers” Charles Blow posted “And Then They Wept…” It’s worth reading.
Morning, folks. If I have one wish for an outcome of this election, it is that 1% of the first time voters, no matter what their ages, GET INVOLVED. If only 1% of those people become emailers, faxers, phone callers to their congress-critters…oh, you would see some change for sure. That is what I hope for.
My favourite phrase from Obama last night:
What are we gonna do about all those rules and regs bushco is busy changing to hamstring as much as they can after they leave? We need to focus on that ASAP!
I have a suspicion FDL will be on the case here. Indeed, I hope you lead the charge!
We need to prioritize. But this seems, to me, to be something we need to shine a lot of light on. No resting on the laurels.
Thanks Christy.
digg
You were not the only ones wiping tears of joy – the news broke around 3pm local time here in Australia and Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra simply erupted – think the world celebrated going forward into the 21st century after eight lost years.
There are gonna be so many wonderful personal stories and memories out there……can’t remember which blog but there was a story about a woman in her 90’s complete with feeding tube and all sorts of medical problems who got herself an ambulance and had them take her to the polls to vote. Daymn! Now that’s a *real* American!
Good morning, Christy, it’s a great day for America, as Craig Ferguson would say! Many thanks to you, Jane, Marcy, and all who blog at FDL day after day, night after night, and who carry their convictions into their other lives. And the commenters here, all the people at FDL make a truly a moral and intelligent community.
We can bask in the glow of last night’s victory for a while, I will relish it for a few days, but there is much work ahead. All the rat-bastards that have poisoned our government these past 8 years have to be rooted out, the rats who have been eating away at everything our founding fathers created. I will pledge my heart, my mind, my abilities, and whatever resources I can spare, towards that end.
There’s all sorts of ’service to the country’ Waccamaw — people standing in line for hours with no bathrooms, standing in the rain, one lady who went into labor, etc. etc. – true, unselfish service to the country. I am so grateful and humbled by what millions of Americans did yesterday(and in voting early as well — I think the whole early voting thing is going to get a lot of attention from states that got themselves into a clamp yesterday). We rescued the country – no one can ask more than that.
Christy -
Well, the down-ticket candidates don’t need any more money right this minute so am snail mailing some in your direction for all you and Jane and everyone else at the Lake has done to help us see this day.
We’re already working on finding better candidates where we can for 2010. This is a long-term effort, and whatever change we are going to push forward will come at the end of a long fight — power doesn’t walk away from the steering wheel easily, especially when something’s in it for them to maintain the status quo. Eh?
Aw, thanks so much!
Karl Rove on the run…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_51XsphHi4
True, dat! :-)))
He can direct agency heads to do whatever and write all kinds of executive orders. Once he leaves office all those changes can be undone with a spoken word or the stroke of a pen. None of Shrub’s rule changing shit has gone, or will go, through Congress.
Thank you for the link.
Americans who have ancestors who were slaves are accustomed to discrimination. Yet in this election a lot of Americans who are 100% European American voted for a Presidential candidate who was not. I have never been prouder of my country.
When I think of the first thing I want the Obama Administration to accomplish, I say “The 2006 mandate.”
End the war in Iraq and reign in the Bu$h misAdministration.
Of course, he needs to do more than “a first thing”, but I’d like to see him start there.
Well done.
I donate $10 each month. I wish it was more.
Tell you what……will double the amount if you can direct mail some better spelling/English my way……
hashave done *G*man, any other time or republican field I would have welcomed oposing points of view from that side of teh aile
but now they do not have the intererst of the people as their driving force, they have the interest of their corporate donors.
I am hoping the few that remain realize, they will not stay long if they do not serve the interest of the people
I would like all progressives to make the point for those republicans still in office;
your party lost seats because it obstructed the will and the good of the people, you are charged with lobbying on your constituents behalf, not on the behalf of your donors.
climb on board, we will give you what your constituents need, sometimes we will give them more then they need, we will give them what they want and more
but you MUST NOT OBSTRUCT the progressive will, the progressive needs, the investments in our future, our infrastructure, our childre, OUR industry.
if they are republican and can really play for the country, they are welcome in my bood, if they continue their destructive rovian/bush/neo-con philosophy I want them banished from government
government is NOT “the” problem, improper governance is
I agree.
It lessens the strain on the federal budget and it’s the right thing to do.
There are some nervous people in and around the White House today.
Sorta like cats in a room full of rocking chairs.
I’m curious as to how many shredders they’ve ordered with rush delivery.
don’t know how much is left but Marion set out quite the breakfast this morning
And we owe a small vote of gratitude to all the pissed off Republicans who voted for Obama, too.
Morning all
I think that it is also imperative that he attach someone to Paulson’s hip so that he can keep tabs on our money
Moving times. My eyes are puffy from crying. I am so proud, so energized, by this country. Of President-Elect Obama, I’m very hopeful. Last night at his acceptance speech, he looked proud, yes, but also older, the weight of many problems settling on his shoulders. If anyone can lead us to turn the page and start anew, I believe he can.
Hey, Pups! i just woke up and need to ask = even though i was laid off two days ago, if you can reassure me that Obama is still Prez-elect, i will be very happy – no votes flipped?
((( siri )))
My daughter got up at 1 a.m. to ask if Obama had won … everyone in her class was rooting for him !
Which is exactly what the Bushies did with a lot of the last-minute Clinton initiatives as well. All presidents do this last-minute shit at the end of their terms only to see most of it undone. And now that we know Cheney’s trick of stopping the presses on the federal register, it’s a sure bet that Obama will take advantage of that to stop them wholesale until he can review them all.
Yes, Kathryn — there IS a Santa Claus. :)
True dat! So many, lights will be flickering around DC from the power drain.
Oh, so sorry about the lay-off!
You got that right. I know a few diehards but most I’ve talked to were voting for Obama. Found out my boss was calling folks early yesterday morning urging them to vote for McSFB. He’s toast now. Gonna be in his shit every chance I get.
I wish I took a picture of the room full of people that I watched returns last night…… I was in a candidate hospitality room for the three candidates for Corporation Commission (who won). In a downtown Phoenix hotel…… there were people of all races and colors ….. holding hands, cheering and crying….
OMG we finally have a president who can speak in sentences……OMG we finally have a President who can put paragraphs together and see the BIG Long view….
That really sucks. Sorry to hear that. Obama’s still prez-elect but that ain’t gonna put food on yer family.
Heh..the number of people at work who have sidled up to me and said, very quietly, something like, “I’m a registered Republican, but…” was amazing. I think a whole lot of people really understood that if we were going to rescue the country – this was the only chance we were gonna get.
Shadenfreudenlicious. Chris Shays “warned a Tsunami was coming our way.” (It certainly came his way.)
Have any of the McSpokesDrones come out of hiding yet this morning?
((((((Kathryn in MA)))))))
Oh Kathryn. So sorry to hear it. I hope you find something that will be a happier place for you to be.
As for how we can affect the next phase, if Rahmbo really does become the next CoS and knowing our relationship with him and his disdain for us, how are we going to pull this off? I can see working with our congresscritters but I don’t see how we can work with him or he us.
Or maybe I’m way off base here.
Amen to that last sentence, perris. The purpose of the last 8 years was to make government look bad, by purposely mis-governing.
As I told some of my co-workers the other day, there are many things thatt the govrnment does well. Look at the social security system, and the postal service.
More than anything else I’m glad Cheney will be gone. The puppeteer almost destroyed our country.
Honestly, I haven’t even been watching for them. But Steve Schmidt did a preliminary run at blaming everyone but himself on the loss before the results came in last night…Michael Scherer did a quick and dirty transcript from the McCain plane, and it was obvious that Schmidt’s purpose was self-deflection in the read. Had to be a tough moment for all of them yesterday, but you gotta CYA where you can, I suppose.
that sucks Kathryn
did not know you were laid off Kathryn, I’m hoping your next job is all the better
barack is the president elect, no votes flipped, mccain conceded to seal the deal
o frabjus day!!
i’m not tooooo worried (she says anxiously) as its the company that bought us out two years ago and laid me off then, had to bring me back when they realized the work only i was doing was contractually owed to the client. This time, i’ll insist on consultant fees. (hope they realize the contract bit again sooner than later,)
I thik Obama would be putting Rahm right where he could harness his ego to move the WH agenda, while putting him on a policy leash that would not be of Rahm’s making. I’ve been giving this a lot of thought and I think it’s a savvy maneuver, actually, if it comes to pass…because it undercuts his potential to cut things off in the House and pits Rahm’s ego against that of the Blue Dogs in some cases.
Could be interesting.
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs,
yes Toby. I found myself staggered and speechless several times last night just watching what the American people were doing
Can not wait to see the turnout numbers (eg LAT reporting 87% of registered voters showed up – now that’s in Frenchy territory)
…and if the numbers come in as I think they are to come in, I am going to be even less tolerant of talk of ‘the sheeple’
did anyone notice how precise nate was in his pre-election prediction?
he predicted 348 electoramas, barack got 349
the man has it down
thank you, dear friends, – how’s the stock market?
Good for you … insist on consultant fees !
Alas, he is not gone quite yet. But yes, that will be a day of serious celebration in my house — he and Addington both walking out of the government, hopefully for good.
Oh, that’s totally correct = keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
I sit here today recently unemployed, with a traffic court appointment today and with a mandate that I buy a license plate sticker today for a vehicle that I may or may not have in the next couple of months. But, you know what, I’m smiling and am invigorated by the work completed and the work ahead. Last night my feet finally thawed from that day, Feb. 10, 2007, when I stood at the bottom of the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, IL looking up in awe at my inspiration. I was smiling then too. Thanks to Jane, Christy and all the Pups at the Lake who allowed me my voice, my opinions, my rants. But most of all I thank you for my growth. God Bless.
Chief of Staff is traditionally a glorified office manager. Head of the administrative staff. Making the operation run smoothly. Cheney changed all that and included the position in policy discussions. Keeping the DLC boy in the traditional role shouldn’t be hard.
Cheney and Addington need to be seriously monitored til the day they die.
Senate recount could linger to December
It’s a great day here in NC. Buh bye Liddy Dole… The “Godless Americans” ask that you not let the door hit you on the way out.
kdh22 (((((hugs!!)))))) aint it the truth!!!
interesting way to think about it.
Having him out of power in the House makes me smile a lot.
I am so happy to be an American today. In NM, we have elected ALL Democrats to the US Congress for the first time EVAH.
Of course civil rights are still an issue we have to fight for, and perhaps President Obama will lead us to the place where prejudice against gender and sexual orientation will be overcome. The battle for civil rights is not over.
my bad, nate predicted 348.6
obama got 349
this is absolutely precise…amazing stuff there
the bad news, I believe al franken lost…sad face
holy crap.
Mark Halperin just broke the news to JoeScar and Mika that there is now not a single Repub member of the House of Reps from New England.
Joe and Mika were shocked.
Isn’t it kinda their *job* to know this kind of stuff?
No one administration can destroy the greatness that is America … many have seriously damaged America though.
There is a huge monetary deficit and a huge moral deficit that President Obama will work to overcome.
I hope that he allows investigations and prosecutions of BushCo, this will appease many in America and around the World.
Another victory…..he toppled that shill Drudge from his throne as the web guy to turn to for information.
-G
RFID tags implanted in their butts.
u guys are gonna kill me but I would not mind one bit if obama found a place for mccain not only for that reason but because it will indeed help mend this country
I do not believe mccain has any love lost for the republican party and I think he might pull a liarman
that would get liarman on board as well
that should be easy to do at Leavenworth
They knew it — they were talking about it yesterday evening, or at least Scarborough was, anyway. It’s camera kabuki. SIGH
They are suppose to preserve their papers and get tax payer funds to do so I wonder if we can make Bush fund and build his library without tax payer or private help as punishment.
Just copy everything 3 times get three different warehouses and then give Historians free unlimited access.
Of course the locations of the back up libraries would be the Leftyest college towns we can find.
Volunteers can help place the entire Bush library on the net with scanners.
Top Secret should apply only to how to make a Nuclear Bomb everything else no.
drudge was obviously a shill, nate seems to me like he recognises his own bias and is quite accurate in his forcasts
They “know” what the RNC emails them to know.
Now who gets appointed to Obama’s senate seat and Joe the Vice Presidents senate seat?
-G
tastey!
Oh Yes!! today’s great thought – let’s act on this one!
that’s a good point – but only if obama challenges the bluedogs, and so far i haven’t seen that (just he opposite, he has gone with the blue dogs and challenged the progressives). but today is a new day – so who knows what is possible?
bom dia pups
Sorry about the lay off, Kathryn but as some have already expressed, I’m sure the next job will be even better that the last
have been thinking the same. love the idea that it’s true aim was to neutralize his, um, efforts in the House. and I agree with Jane that he will brook no kumbaya/bygones schtick
thank you so much for yesterday and everything leading up to yesterday.
I LOVE jane’s camera kabuki
she sits there smiling away while her oponent digs their grave, she smiles and twinkles till they’re done, then she pounds in a few facts, smiles away till they’re done again
excellant kabuki
Biden will be replaced by appointment of either the current Gov who is a Dem or the Gov-elect who is a Dem. I hope that he retires this term and gives his replacement a dash of seniority, like Donna Edwards got.
((( wb )))
Big Hugs ! Great night !
Don’t know if it’s appointments by gov. or special elections but at least both states have dem govs.
JoeScar says Rahm is a harsh partisan.
Absoultely…..it is possible to be partisan in beliefs, but also truck in facts…….Nate is wonderful……
The whole night, barring a few dissapointments is wonderful….It is such a sea change in this country……It just feels good….
I’m so proud of my home state of NH too.
-G
I’m not sure what all is involved, but a lot of damage can be done that will take a lot of undoing. Laws are implemented through Federal Regulations and directives put out by the Executive Branch. Federal Regulations bear the force of laws, and any proposed changes to them are supposed to go through a long process of publication in the Federal Register, a public comment period, and a published decision. Given the casual treatment of actual laws by this administration, I’m not sure they would go through all of the required steps regarding Federal Regulations.
Directives are just orders written by each agency telling civil servants how to perform their duties. They can be changed without any comment or publication.
Anyway, it might take a really thorough effort of a dedicated administration and civil service to discover and reverse the damage.
best of luck to kathryn and kdh22.
selise, good to see you here.
did you smile last night?
I did, I think we might have us a winner, he is now president, he has alot more leverage then while running
let’s hope he knows how to use it
I don’t think we can know yet which way that will go, actually, because helming government as opposed to having to compromise in the thick of a bare majority are two different things. Obama will be in a position to set an agenda in a lot of ways at the start — it will be interesting to see if the priorities and emphasis changes from what we’ve seen thus far.
That mantle of responsibility has a way of weighing more heavily in favor of a dynamic shift. Which is why I say we’re all going to have a lot of work on this end of things to help shape things in the direction we want to see them go…lots of work between now and January.
Oh, now JoeScar is shocked and *pissed* at the Rahm appointment.
Says that Rahm is a brass-knuckle Dem – called Harold Ford’s defense of the choice “crap”.
JoeScar – classy act as always.
I’m very interested in O’s senate replacement. Gov. Hair (Rod Blagojevich) should defer the decision to other IL Dems (Durbin) for advice, but I’m not holding my breath on that.
if I were obama I would call it some kind of “personal security” when he really means “national security”, cheney is a sociopath and a traitor with treason on his mind, if not jailed he needs to be followed till the day he leaves the planet
howdy perris. more than smile
Thanks all.
So what do we want, what are we willing to fight for the most? What does Obama want? Where the 2 converge we should coordinate we can prepare the ground for the public by debating the issues.
Obama can see what works, doesn’t work, and why from our debates (which is kind of what having two opposing Lefty and Righty newspapers in a city used to do).
Then he can submit bills with public feedback taken into consideration free of Corporate Media Bias.
Stay classy, Moanin’ Schmoe.
absolutely. I still can’t believe it!!! It hasn’t sunk in yet. We won Indiana. We won New Mexico. We won Virginia. We won Colorado. Looks like we won North Carolina. It just goes on.
Lady Jane, Christy, front pagers and the rest of the community, this has been an amazing ride.
The Rethugs have had their think tanks cranking out crap for the last 30 years, most, if not all, of it fatally flawed by ideology.
We have a great opportunity to become a progressive “think tank.” An idea factory. Lots of thinkers here and there’s no reason we can’t develop our own white papers for a progressive vision.
oh yeah LOL. I forgot
(((((Petrocelli)))))
I may still be a wee bit tipsy *g*
I am happy because there is hope to end our national nightmare of corruption, mass murder, torture, destruction of the rule of law, and economic policies that deliver most of the wealth to those who don’t need it, but as you and Obama said, it’s only hope and that’s worth little if it isn’t realized by doing what needs to be done to not only correct these monstrous injustices, but to establish both legal and social justice as well as a recognition that the lives of others should be considered as if they were our own.
I’m happy, but…
agree on all points
(((SD)))
Maybe that is why Bush ended the space shuttle program.
of course we can’t know. but we do have past actions to give us hints.
completely agree about the work we have to do. i’d like to start with 2 things:
1) cabinet appointments – for example, treasury secretary who doesn’t represent wall street (no to rubin or summers). shelia blair has been suggested by dean baker and joe stiglitz by naomi klein.
2) single payer health care. hcan is a con.
I want torture re-defined as a crime no matter who commmits that crime
I want signing statements rebuked and a law passed that a signing statement carries no weight, once a president signs a law he is bound by that law no matter what he says about it
I want a fairness doctrine
I want all the gifts given to the wealthy under bush returned, I want most of the gifts given the wealthy under reagan returned
I want clean air back, shools back, clean water back
I want product that comes from countries with slave and child labor tariffed
I want companies shifting jobs overseas punished more then they gain
I want criminals prosecuted, war criminals jailed, traitors exposed
none of that is in order and there are more
There are plenty of old hands in the agencies that can point out the crap.
Remember Lyndon Johnson told the civil rights movement to sell the movement for him so that it would be easier to implement…..
That is our task….To beat back the Limbaugh’s, Hannity’s and their kind and help to push a positive, progressive agenda.
-G
off to work, see all later
The attendees at the party I was at last night thought I was nuts when I kept saying that Obama needs to hit 350….. and before I left last night the count was at 330…. anyone say man date?
How much do you need to create a library to house one book, which, of course, he has not completely read or understood? -winks-
please make that beady eyed sleazebag GET LOST
(bows) Konnichiwa, Wobbs.
It is a good day to be alive.
After all the blood, sweat and tears over the past 7+ years under Bush, I’m just going to enjoy the day. “But” comes tomorrow. Allow yourself to exhale for a moment, to appreciate the accomplishment. We start the fight in earnest for the heart and soul of america
Exactly so. Part think tank, part junkyard dog, part sales pitch. *g*
Stay
classyclueless, Moanin’ Schmoe.Why change now?
‘Course, your version was correct too….
will there be a FRANKEN runoff?
Indeed.
The only flip that might happen that I’m aware of is that GA may in fact be an Obama state. The Sec. of State is still processing a number of the early votes, and at this moment there’s still a runoff in the works for the US Senate race.
Let us rejoice in the FACT that the far right smear and fear machine has been dashed to bits….
The bile and negativity poured onto Obama and the left in general lost out….and lost out in places like Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, NC…
They are on the losing side and they are the Sore Losermen now.
-G
PUBLICALLY POST their salaries…how many DOLLARS per word of HATE,and LIES
Joseph Stiglitz would be a good choice. He would certainly drive the neo-cons crazier. Hmm… is that a good thing?
YES!!! to single payor universal healthcare -big grin-
DING!
Let’s just keep doin’ what we’ve been doin’. I truly believe the excellent writing and thoughtfulness on the blogs must continue to impact the course of our nation, of our leaders, of our people.
I heard that it will be a recount
I find that very moving. It makes me feel like we did have many friends in the world and they have stayed with us despite this long aberation. Thank you.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool. Damn, I’m a tired puppy.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Is it too much to hope that Obama announces, in his *Inauguration Speech*, that Guantanamo is, as of that moment, Closed?
my guess:
346 192
9 in the Senate
26 in the House
apparently I was huffin’ the Schadenfreude cannister a little too heavy :D
this is priceless
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/….._1104.html
BWAhahahhhaahahahhaahahaa
The statement quoted in the OP is true Obama from what I’ve heard of him. I heard an interview that a Chi Tribune writer had with a Philly talkshow a week or so ago. He has followed President-elect Obama throughout his entire career and believes that he will be much more of a centrist. His acceptance speech last nite confirmed that at least to me. This will be good for everyone at this stage. His agenda moving toward the center could easily prevent another “Contract with America” scenario that Pelosi and Reid could perpetuate if their approval ratings continue to be so low.
President-elect Obama is not only historically important, but the man himself has the potential of administrating one of the greatest Presidencies of the modern era. A truely inspiring man bordering on greatness.
Thank you. I was thinking about this song during Obama’s speech last night. I’m sure I confused a couple of people near me when I said, ”Thank you, Sam Cooke!”
As an activist against poverty I am so glad to see someone in charge who has seen the devastation in our nation within the ghettos of Chicago first hand. There are many good people in poverty who have nothing else but their integrity to preserve. They cannot hide their greedy ugly side with a shiny new car or expensive clothes or a big house. Their faces are every hue and their spirits come from every faith. They cannot let their smiles hide the greed inside while they flash a limitless bank card to pay for expensive dinners, nor hide from their isolation by showing up at expensive ball games or concerts ~ and Barak Obama personally knows some of these good people. I also know those folks, as well as other intelligent, articulate,”Obamas” who spend their lives trying to raise our awareness to those in need.
President Obama never lived his life in a bubble until now ~ but he will be in one soon. Let us not let him forget those faces that many of us have some to love. When the hungry are fed, the homeless can afford housing, when the poor are clothed, when our citizens are educated, when there is enough for everyone, there is no need for wars and genocide. There is no need to steal or kill. Addressing poverty lifts us ALL up. So let us get to work now to make sure that poverty is not only eradicated in this country, but around the world.

If that’s what Joe said then Barack must have made a decent choice. Actually Rahm is not a favorite of mine but it’s nice to see Joe upset.
Gotta find something to do with these poor souls. Many, if not most, probably have some severe psychological problems now. We can’t just open the doors and say go home. We are responsible for the safety and well being of these folks. If there are some real criminals in the bunch deal with them in the normal manner, but even they are probably damaged mentally.
Ambassador to Israel
oh goodie!
May I say that Tucker Carlson is a petulant whiny sumbitch this morning on MSNBC…because it’s all about him….
Tucker…as Barbara Bush would say…rhymes with F…….
Time for some dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t questions to be put to the Senate because we don’t have a majority.
Pay as you go rules give us structure. For example lets pull troops out of Iraq to save money, but a vote against such a bill is then a vote to remove all military bases except the National Guard out of your state as part of a military base closing plan to pay for the war.
Also to help staff the Military all Gay People who lost their jobs in the military and want back in can get back in.
Or the Senator or Congressman who votes against such a bill has just volunteered his and his wife’s family for the draft, all of them now immediately.
In other words until we get out of Debt every bill has to be paid for at the same time it is enacted.
The GOP is of course free to vote on other ways to pay for bills.
But since they are anti tax, and they won’t be allowed except by a majority to increase the National Debt they won’t have any cards.
Hello, everyone, and finally I can breathe again. Been a long time gone here at the lake, and good to be back. This was spectacular, and there is more to come. There are so many opportunities out there for the American people and finally, the new awakening may see them realized. There is a major cultural shift on the way, and it is good.
a very dear friend of mine for 19 years(ablack woman) and i are going to DC for the swearing in……………yessssssssssssssssss we ARE!!!
we could bring them all to the States, and force the DOJ to expedite that every single one either be tried or released (and treated if need be).
MSGOP……..still doesnt get it
WE WON…….SO LONG,PAT,JOE,TOM,TUCKER,and LOU,GLENN etc
Joe and *ucker know exactly who and what Rahm Emanuel is. That’s why they’re pissed. And although Rahm’s approach is not something that I can relate to personally, he is an effective and competent politician. Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Reid NEED him in that position.
another tasty morsel from yesterday -

tariffedBanned.Fixed it ok then lets work for this! Still I would like to see the entire Lefty Blogosphere get behind some core ideas and push for them.
I hope so. As a civil servant who retired two years ago, I saw a lot of replacement of career civil servants by private contractors, a lot of supposed “modernizing” which threw out long standing processes which had dictated fairness and legality, and a lot of changing rules of rating, promotion, and hiring to allow the possibility of favoritism.
I’m not quite that old but Yeah thats exactly what I think we should do.
For those familiar with the Palin as President site, make sure that you visit the site today. lol http://www.palinaspresident.us/
from john cusack:
As we help Obama try to implement another New Deal, I asked Naomi Klein about the parallels to The Shock Doctrine as it’s polar opposite. She told me:
my bold.
The Cheney Library then of stuff he didn’t have time to shred:)
Does the President have any say in who he wants the Senate Majority Leader to be?
HRC would be great in that job….
Reviewing Alaska’s electoral results, it appears that Seward’s critics may have had a point – folly.
At least Tucker follows up with a moment of honesty: this is the nadir of the Republican party….
Watched him rantin’ and ravin’………if scar hates the idea, there *must* be a nugget of good in the idea.
So what is Harry Reid going to do with Holy Joe? I don’t think he has the cajones to show him the door. We shall see.
Any theories?
great great youtube clip from naomi klein on the day after the election.

How long until Chairman Lieberman starts holding hearings investigating the Obama administration? Are Democrats really going to wimp out and let this traitor remain in our caucus? Let him stay a committee chair so that we can pay for the staff he uses to try to bring down President Obama? It’s time to show Lieberman the door.
Put up my flag this morning and brought back out my Obama Biden lawn sign. Boo-yah!!!!
We are all African Americans.

we think alike…”g”
No committe chairmanships for Lieberman — he did nothing with Katrina oversight. Malfeasance is his motto.
Oh really.
As one of Obamas big supporter – I’m disgusted already, if the report is true.
Time’s Halperin is reporting that ABC is reporting that Obama just offered the Chief of Staff job to Emanuel.
He’s been nothing but a snake, who through dirty tricks and ideololgy ruined the Democratic party.
He will not serve Obama – Raaaahhhhm Emanuel is there for special interests and himself.
!@#$
kick his sorry ignominious ass to the curb
Obama should bring the press through a tour of the bad parts of Chicago to focus attention on why we need jobs that pay well.
I’m sure if the Fox News Reporter gets snippy the Press bus will magicly be full when the press tour is done.
keep your enemies close…imo
HolyJoe owes the citizens of KY a great deal of gratitude. Miss McConnell’s re-election saved his a**.
I’m not thrilled about the Rahm pick either but I agree with Christy’s assessment @ 55.
OTOH, not too much can upset me/distract me this morning. Am simply thrilled about the election results in NC.
We have work to do with some House races in the next few years but to have Liddy Dole gone — that’s priceless.
Logic dictates that you have to deal with Rahm somehow. Do you want him as a free agent or someone you keep closer so you can monitor his doings? If it were me, I’d keep him front and center.
Maybe I’m wrong, but based on what I’ve seen, I have the feeling that anyone Obama appoints to anything will be working to achieve Obama’s purposes, and not their own.
oooooooooooooooooooooh, sweet
wouldn’t it be sweet if Obama REQUIRED Liarman to produce a report re Katrina?
joe lieberman for secretary of state? i don’t object to keeping either of them front and center, but not putting them such an important position that they can do serious damage and that they are given a legitimacy they don’t deserve.
Yep, and Rahm will now have a vested personal interest in President Obama’s agenda being adopted, not the Rahm agenda.
I continue to be impressed by BO’s sense of perspective about people, both his supporters and opponents.
or maybe that obama thinks rahm ’s agenda is compatible with his? i just don’t see how this is a good thing – and i hope it’s not true.
I think he is equating himself with America
First questions first – what is the new dem majority going to do with harry Reid?
The Cheney Library would be full of shredded docs.
This isn’t about Rahm’s agenda or ideology. Rather, it is about his knowing how to run a the executive branch and get things done.
But can Cheney shred every memo and email he and his underlings have sent to every government Dept?
Nope, Secretary of State allows for free agency. Cheif of Staff is a gatekeeper and enforcer for the President whose agenda is set by the President. Joe Lieberman can sulk on his own and think about how he poisoned his own fucking well. *g*
The difference is the job and the use of the person going into it. Joe Lieberman is of no use and no power whatsoever at this point other than his own self-aggrandized view. Rahm, on the other hand, needs to be neutralized somehow…as does his Blue Dog/Steny relationship. Having him in a position where his ego-boo depends on how well the President’s agenda is seen to be moving, balanced against the Blue Dog self-interest on occasion, seems to me a good pivot point to balance him on for long enough to serve at the pleasure of the President.
And I’m just Machiavellian enough to enjoy contemplating Rahm trying to work out where his self-interest lies on that balancing point…even if that’s only as far as it goes, because it’s far from clear whether this kabuki is all Rahm’s self-promotion at this point or whether an offer really has been made.
ok, i’ll concede the liberman argument.
but christy – when has obama challenged the blue dogs the way he’s challenged the progressives? on fisa, on the bailout, on all the economic and so called national security stuff – it’s been blue dog all the way. i fear that rahm as cos will be reinforcement of that instinct.
hope i’m wrong.
selise — you want answers in absolutes. I don’t have them. All I’m saying is that (a) we have to push Obama toward policies we want from him, because that’s our role in this governmental dance; and (b) if I were in his shoes, that’s exactly the sort of thing I’d want to do to Rahm, too, in terms of savvy use. Other than that, I don’t have any answers at this point because I’m going on five hours sleep and talking about an administration that has yet to start with policies I have yet to see fully advanced.
no, i don’t want answers in absolutes. i just want to connect the dots we do have and not forget recent history.
But you do — you want concrete answers on something we can’t know for sure at this point. We have past history and actions which tell part of the story, but not what may be with sufficient public pressure brought to bear. Which was the point of the post above. Is anyone saying not to look at history — did I miss that somewhere?
Is it okay if we celebrate for one day?
i never said anything about anyone else not looking at history – i only said that was what i was trying to do.
there’s not much we can know for sure about the future, but we have a lot of past data to got on and i’m trying to remember and connect the dots. just like i always try to do – regardless if the politicians involved are Ds or Rs.
i hope you are celebrating. i am.
I can see the brilliance of breaking the Rahm/Steny chokehold on Congress. And if Congress dumps Steny, as they should, that’s all good news for our Congress.
And Emanuels apparent hesitation may just prove where his loyalties really lie.
But I’m talking about what’s good for Obamas agenda- making it happen just as decisively as his campaign. If Emanuel could destroy the House with his alliances -why not the ultimate effectiveness of an Obama Administration.
It’s a real concern. Obama has run a tight ship so far and succeeded. So why take the risk and bring in a big hungry rat now??
I feel that it’s pretty clear that Obama is going to be in charge and not anyone else. It’s obvious that he feels the responsibility and expects to take the heat for decisions that people don’t like. COS needs to be a planner, an organizer and he will work at the pleasure of the prez. If not, he’s out.
Yeah, funny, ain’t it? Up until yesterday, we were supposed to believe the rest of the world could go screw. And that their approval was simply testimony to Obama’s deficiencies.
Today we’re getting to tell the Republicans to go screw. And I know I’m supposed to be above all that, but damn, it feels great!
I love that the rest of the world is sharing our joy today. I just love it.
I am one of those reformed (registered) republicans. Felt good to circle Obama’s name last night.
I have been reading this site as well as other blogs for 5 years now and it was a relief to hear Olbermann say “NBC has called it for Obama” at 11:01 pm. Many fist pumps followed by tears and some good wine.
Many thanks to Christy and all the other fine writers on this site!!
Christy, you and all the folks at FireDogLake played a big role in this victory. Sincere thanks to you for your intelligence and tenacity.
