Update: MSNBC reports Rahm has accepted the post - 2:50 eastern
The talking heads on Morning Joe are consumed with the rumor that Rahm Emanuel will be named Chief of Staff.
I wrote the other day that "Rahm doesn't do bipartisan," and Scarborough resoundingly echoed that sentiment. He said that appointing Rahm as COS would be like Bush appointing Tom Delay. He's basically telling the Republicans to go Cheney themselves.
I subsequently got into an email exchange with someone who argued that Rahm was was very much a bipartisan operator, who orchestrated the caucus to capitulate to bipartisanship bullshit from 2006-2008.
I replied that it's not conservatism Rahm hates, he's actually quite fond of that. It's Republicans.
When Rahm works to get legislation passed, he beats up Democrats, he doesn't reach across the aisle and try to negotiate with Republicans and make them happy.
Rahm doesn't really operate from an ideological standpoint. He sees political parties more like sports teams.
I'm not necessarily arguing that this is a horrible move -- Rahm is unrelenting and having a bulldog in that position could be important to implementing Obama's agenda. And I personally hate the word "bipartisan," especially as peddled by its chief pimp and bottle washer, Joe Lieberman. It's a phony concept that assumes the GOP operate in good faith. They don't, and only people paying marginal attention could believe that they do. I actually appreciate that the charade is now over and we can face that political reality.
Clinton got hamstrung early on by Democratic infighting, and Rahm will work hard to keep the party in line. There's nothing "kinder and gentler" about his approach.
But bipartisan? I'm with Scarborough. It's laughable.
Don't appoint Chuck Hagel to some meaningless post and tell me it's raining.
Update: Cizzilla says Rahm is mulling over the job offer. We can hardly wait.

So Rahmbo like to beat up Democrats? I am concerned he will try to beat up other White House staffers and agency officials to get his way, as well.

Jane:
I’ve heard that it is good to have a bulldog in the CoS position. Besides, Rahm would be in charge of implementing Obama’s agenda.
Rahm’s not real warm and fuzzy, is he?
I think this is really good news on two fronts. First is the obvious death of the “bipartisanship” bullshit. The American people did not vote for bipartisanship, they voted for progressive partisanship (despite whatever fantasies David Broder and Tom Brokaw may indulge). Secondly, it gets Rahm out of the House and opens the possibility of getting an actual progressive to replace him. while I am not sure what the rules are in Illinois, Gov. Blagojevich is not likely to appoint someone who is too far to the left, but even a little would be a huge improvement.
not exactly the Dalai Rahma
Isn’t COS kind of a cattle-herder/gang boss type of job? If so, maybe Rahm would be pretty decent at it, and we’ll be able to use it to do what he is good it - screwing with rethugs. ‘Mr. McConnell, soya want a meeting with Obama to discuss that critical piece of legislation? Um… we’ll get back to you…. next session.’
Don’t think Obama would allow that but if Rahm wants to beat up on Nancy and Steny and Harry to get Obama’s stuff done it suits me just fine.
I would be all for Emanuel acting as a zealous, effective rahmrod to push through Obama’s policies. I would not like to see him put a conservative spin on those policies.
btw.. anyone know what’s going on in NC. McCain’s down 12,000 votes with supposedly 100% reporting.
How much does Rhambo Emmanuel and David Addington have in common?
Bob in HI
I saw that. Anybody know the name of the leading newspaper in NC?
he’s DeLay
I’m down with it

You can check the Charlotte Observer or the News and Observer.
It could work out well if Barack and Rahm can do a good-cop/bad-cop tag team on Republicans. Plus it gets Rahm out of the House, which seems like a good thing in itself.
What was KKKarl’s title in the Bush WH?
provisional ballots not yet counted, may break Obama’s way
OT, but since I’ve been doing campaign stuff (and then the victory party and then sleeping) nonstop, let me now do a little FDL Snoopy dance:
Virginia, yeah! YES WE DID! :-)
So Jane, this won’t be like the TV show “Survivor” when there are so few members on the losing team (GOP), that the host decides to merge both teams so they can fight it out every week for individual immunity?
I believe he was “Deputy Chief of Staff, Chief Political Officer” or something along that line. He theoretically reported to Card and then Bolten but I think that was just for Org chart purposes.
Cool. NC, VA, IN…. it was a good day. Oh well, I guess they still have the Idaho hills to hide in…
By the time they’re finished counting, the finger nails will be long gone and I’ll be down to chewing on knuckles.
Deputy Chief of Staff

It has been confirmed according to MSNBC - Rahm to be COS.
congratulations, Redshift!
I wonder who will replace Rahm in Congress .. and who moves up the chain of command now in the House .. I think Rahm might actually be the perfect choice to be CoS
been thinkin of ya ever since the polls closed. so very happy for you.
and how about Tom Perriello ?!!!
I have heard that Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr, is being considered for Obama’s sen seat but nothing about Rahm,s seat. As far as his position in the house I hope it is not Debbie Wasserman Shultz.
I’ve been wondering that as well. Van Hollen ? don’t know if he has the requisite senority. Pach will know
Jane, your thinking and comments cut right to the marrow…
It’s refreshing to read.
P.S. Also heard Tammy Duckworth mentioned for Obama’s seat.
well. the rethugs certainly aren’t acting like the want or deserve bipartisanship. Not if their talking heads and propaganda organs are any indication… so heck with them. Bipartisanship is a two way street. If they behave this way, then I think its a perfectly good thing that they get Rahm in their face making their life hell for the next four years. Let Rahm loose on ‘em.. he’ll probably do better in that capacity than making trouble for progressives in the legislature.
C-o-S has to be a hard-ass or the President’s attention can be diverted, and I don’t see any meaner guys on our side of the aisle than Rahm, so I like this idea.
For Republicans “bipartisan” means Democrats do exactly what Republicans want. Screw that.
OT, but important question for GA people: is it true that Chambliss, even though he “won”, he failed to get a majority and therefore must face a run-off election?
Remember how “bipartisan” the Bush administration was after Gore beat Bush in 2000?
that man gives me the willies.
Paybacks a bitch.
I’m right with you.
The whole bipartisan thing was grating on my nerves.
Screw them. I’m nowhere near ready to play nice.
And given Rahm’s attitude, he’s gonna be perfect for Obama’s nice guy role.
msnbc site now reports Chambliss with “50 percent” but it appears to actually be about 6000 short of a majority–third party candidate got 128,000 votes
howd does Biden fit in to this equation? OPbama said he wanted Jowe to be a “point man” on legislation. I’d hate to see Biden marginalized or frozen out: 1) because I think he can a great help and it would be stupid to do so; and 2) he doesn’r deserve that shit and wouildn’t have accepted the VP position if Barack is goign to allow that to happen.
If Rahm helps keep the GOP from being obstructionist, perfect. That is the battle that WILL occur, because the Reps do NOT give up power, they do NOT give up blaming, they do NOT give up accusing.
So if there is someone in charge of calling them on the bullshit every day, that is great.
So Emmanuelle accepted, huh?
I was originally pissed at the Biden pick and Obama proved me wrong. I hope Obama’s going to prove me wrong again.
pfffffffffftttt
Hmmmm someone must know sumpin’ bout sumpin’. But let’s not beat our spears into plowshares until the spears are issued, makay?
so .. what.. we get another shot at firing Saxby Chambliss in a month?
And if Joe Scar doesn’t like it, I love it!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25361806
third party actually got 126,328
Since Dubya could not think, a special organization had to be built around him. Precedent now exists (Palin excitedly pondered the new supercharged VP powers) for Obama to make a new Organizational Structure that will suit his needs.
It is exciting to consider a new President with a highly functioning brain (not just the stem) who can speak clearly, articulately and extemporaneously. It brings a smile to my face.
I still have Hope for this scenario:
Obama: “That’s fine, Rahm. We’ll be out in an hour.”
Howard Dean: “Rahm, my water’s getting kind of cold. Could you go get us some ice? Thanks, buddy.”
(door shuts)
Yes, We Can!
that is what I heard talking heads say on TV last night
We need to assure the non-repetition of the events of the last few years and ot do so, we need to make sure that the rethug party’s corporate/wealthy donors understand that, under President Obama, the return on investment for their continued patronage of these arseholes is zero…. no access to the WH, no patronage projects, no legislation, nothing… zip. In this respect, bulldog Rahm will be good. Once the rethugs have no more money, they will eat their young and dissipate into the sulfiric fog from which they came.
If Obama made any mistakes in selecting, placing, and managing his campaign staff, they sure weren’t apparent. Right now, I’m hoping his White House staff will be able to operate with teh same efficiency and unity of purpose.
I know! Amazing!
None of us know, but I don’t think this harms Biden at all.
He should have plenty on his plate to get through the Senate, and since he’s been there so long he knows where all the bodies are buried.
Jane, Nice take on Emmanuel as cat-herder-in-chief. Reid and Pelosi both have to work with oversized egos (in Reid’s case), and oversized fear (in Pelosi’s). Rahm’s not subject to the same constraint. He can do the arm-twisting at the Congressional level so Barack can keep his arms free for the military and civilian bureaucracy, who are also going to have to be herded — with a stick.

James Taylor - Belfast To Boston (God’s Rifle)
(James Taylor)
There are rifles buried in the countryside for the rising of the moon
May they lie there long forgotten till they rust away into the ground
Who will bend this ancient hatred, will the killing to an end
Who will swallow long injustice, take the devil for a country man
Who will say “this far no further, oh lord, if I die today”
Send no weapons no more money. Send no vengeance across the seas
Just the blessing of forgiveness for my new countryman and me
Missing brothers, martyred fellows, silent children in the ground
Could we but hear them could they not tell us
“Time to lay God’s rifle down”
Who will say this far no further, oh Lord, if I die today.
NO ONE from the Chicago School for Treasury!!! We need to insist on that.
Chambliss, Martin headed for runoff race
Atlanta Journal Constitution
actually, we can do with some monetarist thinking. Discipline. Shrub’s solution was just to print money to fund dubious projects and initiatives… that’s more of a fiscalist bias.
It would be great not to have anymore Goldman Sachs CEO’s either, but I think Rubin has an inside shot at Treasury Secretary (again).
Good point. Thinking strategically. Rahm also neuters Steny, equally on the take with the Republiks.
sweet - HuffPo saying Robert Kennedy Jr possibly for Environmental
Besides if the senate needs to go nuclear to get things done he would play a major role in that.

Redshift - **happy dance**
waiting for the absentees and provisionals to all be counted. No one is expecting a change in NC being a Barack state.
The Tarheel state done good this year.
msnbc says rahm accepts
Rahmbo is just the kind of muscle that Pres-O will need. He’s a take-no-prisoners non-bullshitter. The fact that it makes JoeScar crazy makes me SMILE!!
yeah. i ain’t clairvoyant, neither. hope so. i tend to agree. too early to jump to conclusions. i’ll wait ’til after xmas.
ROFL
“and you forgot my lemon.”
“Democrat Jim Martin was holding his own press conference miles away in Midtown Atlanta.
“We’re in a runoff,” Martin said. “The runoff race begins right now.”
Martin said his campaign has already reached out to the campaign of President-elect Barack Obama, but had been told nothing specific about Obama’s plans.”
No. Neo-liberal thinking created this mess. It will not get us out.
Kennedy is an excellent choice. He is a great advocate of solar and wind energy.
Of course, no one knows energy like Sarah Palin. What a wonderful paean to bipartisanship a Palin appointment would be. /s
hehe.. just noticed that Redstate still have GA in their undecided column. Dunno why.
Dejected and hurt. Can’t stay focused.
Run off for Saxby and Martin
Rahm’s seat shouldn’t be an appointment — vacated Congressional seats in the House are filled by special election in Illinois, I believe (or else what was that business with Bill Foster and Denny Hastert’s old seat?).
Considering my district has historically been represented by Dan Rostenkowski and Rod “slightly less corrupt than Judy Baar-Topinka” Blagojevich, I don’t have high hopes. But I’m not heavily tuned into the local political machinations — would be nice if there was someone remotely progressive who would make a suitable candidate.
D
Please - let us end all talk of bi-partisanship - except for solemn ritual intonations occasionaly. The GOP refused to do it, and so should we. We will have a honeymoon of course, and should pass the really important stuff
-health care
-end wars (both)
-re-regulation (a new New Deal)
-fix tax system - with the rich paying a few pennies for all their dollars
-get rid of no child left behind - as parent, I know its horrors, and all teachers agree

Many in the movement left are having a heart attack that the first major move of President-elect Barack Obama is the appointment of Congressman Rahm Emanuel as White House Chief of Staff. Emanuel has accepted.
And punaise didn’t offer any compliments or groans?
Ick. I hope Obama knows what he’s doing. I just don’t feel good about Rahm in the WH.
Bob in HI
LMAO.
Thanks for the link.
What’s with Halperin constantly pushing this story. Earlier he says ABC says the AP said… Now he posts that MSNBC says Emanuel accepts -then says the story is not true.
Isn’t this insiders trying to force Emanuel down our throats as they did in trying to get Obama to choose Emanuel as VP??
BIG HUGE NO F**ING WAY DO WE THE PEOPLE WANT EMANUEL.
ANY WHERE NEAR THE WHITE HOUSE.
ALL IT TAKES IS ONE RAT.. AND HE’S THE KING.
I think Obama could do much much MUCH better than Rahm Emanuel. He should use the same team that ran the best and most respected campaign in history. If Emanuel winds up with the job, I’ll give O the benefit of the doubt but I have a very icky feeling about it.
Jane,
My first read tells me you think Rahm would be a bad choice, but my second read tells me otherwise. Care to comment?
