Even if Franken gets seated in January, the Minnesota DFL (Democratic Farmer Labor) Party needs to adress the cancer on Minnesota politics that is the third party fascist stalking horse that got ‘em Jessie Bullethead Ventura as Governor, Coleman the first time (along with the assasination of Paul Wellstone) and Palwenty as governor twice with under 50% of the vote! The Independence Party is a creation of the old Minnesota Republican elite who had been rapidly squeezed out of the state party by the whackos and wingnuts in the 1980’s…by the ’90’s it had become clear that it would only be possible to break the DFL strength statewide and in the House of Representatives in particular by runnin’ a third party to drain off 15-20% of the old DFL constituency that was uncomfortable bein identified as “liberal” in the 1980’s. The national fascistpolitical novacain of “there is not a dime’s worth of difference between the parties” landed Vessie Ventura in the Goverorship and Al Tincklenberg in the Dept. of Transportation and Dean Barkly in the Statehouse as chief of staff (or some such nonsense) and then in the Senate to serve out Wellstone’s term until the election.

Minjnesota has been strapped with radical wingnut political leadership in the state ever since the Barkleys and the Tinklenbergs came up with Governor Baldy…and even if Franken slips into the seat, the DFL is gunna hafta do a cage match with the Independence Party if they’re gunna survive.
