Blue America did pretty well I’m thinking. The Obama campaign was capturing most people’s attention and money, but we still had some really big wins despite that disadvantage.

Obama/Merkley GOTV knocked on my door Saturday morning reminding me to vote. They knew my ballot was still with me though my spouse’s had already been accounted for. I was impressed and in return gave them pep talk they probably didn’t expect.

No. The reality is that the 2 counties that are not fully counted are heavy blue territory—Portland (Multnomah county) and the People’s Republic of Eugene (Lane county) which means that Merkley’s numbers should increase dramatically once those numbers are in.

One thought is that a lot of ballots were mailed/dropped off the last day or two. They also have to be manually opened twice due to the outer envelope and the secure ballot envelope. I guess it’s just labor intensive.

Personally, I love the system. The state has your signature on file when you register to compare (if needed to verify for validity) with the mandatory signature on the outside ballot envelope sent to you r mailing address. I believe confidentiality is still maintained, even though this is a built in fraud busting mechanism.

I’m curious. What does it take for the broadcast media to call this race (Oregon Merkley v. Smith)? A commenter over at TPM noted the local NBC affiliate here in Portland also declared Merkley the winner. I called our NPR station an hour ago to inform them of The Oregonian’s call. So far . . . nothing but a brief report that Merkley had pulled ahead.

No, he’s won it. Now we wait to see who notices, and how long it takes them.
