The cameras returned to the Fox News studio after McCain’s concession speech last night to a lot of Very Concerned Faces. The audience… booed. Hissed. In one particularly fragrant case, demanded to see Obama’s birth certificate. The audience, a more in sorrow than in anger Shepard Smith said, just didn’t Get the elegiac mood of McCain’s classy concession speech.* How, Smith asked plaintively of his appropriately somber spokescoanchor, did we get to this?
Gee. I have a theory.
Victory has a lot of owners, but defeat tends to be accidentally on purpose left on the bus. Let’s return it to some of them. The people who turned vicious, take no prisoners politics into a parlor game for ruling class hobbyists? They own an enormous share of this. Mr. Murdoch’s Fox News and and Fox News contributor Karl Rove (who gifted us with Steve Schmidt, the guy who made the call for McCain to Go There) and CNN’s Alex "hands ad" Castellanos, and ABC’s Matthew "screw the middle" Dowd, and the entire Republican permanent floating murderer’s row campaign apparatus have spent decades shaping the responses of the people in that courtyard.
It was their day job, and the founding of their fortunes, but they love their kids and their dogs and they have gay siblings and it’s just how the game is played, right? No harm no foul.
Only, you know, harm. And foul. And hatred, and division, and soldiers dying, and tax dollars disappearing by the billions into the pockets of contributors, and the economy going under, while we fiercely debate what goes on in other peoples’ bedrooms and how to taxonomize those threatening creatures, People With Skin Colors and Religions Other Than Our Own.
How did we get here? Everyone who wasn’t involved in making it no big deal to say this stuff to a national reporter, take one step back
"It’s terrible, just terrible," said Lindsay Diamond from Phoenix. "When the economy’s bad, Republicans lose."
The 28-year-old dancer could take some consolation from Obama’s victory though. "I don’t think we’ll have to worry about another African-American president in four years time," she said."Because after what’s going to happen in the next four years under Obama, we’ll never elect an African-American again."
Duncan’s friend, 30-year-old Sarah Duncan, was more generous."There’s no question that Obama’s an absolutely phenomenal, knock-your-socks-off speaker," she said."McCain is old and not very dynamic, and that’s what people see. But people don’t look past the image and the fancy words when they look at Obama.
"I just don’t think America is quite ready for an African-American to be President. There’s already people out there saying they’ll try to assassinate him. He’ll make us a socialist country but Americans won’t accept that."
…"I’m very disappointed because I don’t believe Obama is telling the truth when he speaks to the crowds," said Jeanette Woodward."And the press has been very biased. We don’t get the truth."
"I’m frightened because we are in the tax bracket that he’s been talking about punishing. So we are going to have to let go some of our employees and cut back on our business now."My husband says that if he knew that he was gonna work that hard for 30 years for somebody else, he wouldn’t have worked so hard."
Mazie Hoffmann, meanwhile, lamented the effect that father-of-two Obama’s election would have on family values."I don’t feel that he has good values, you know, wholesome values that represent America," she said."He believes in abortion, about all the abortion rights that are extreme. Maybe in Europe you have that but in America, most of mainstream America is more conservative. And I feel that as far as gay marriage we are going to get that here… America is gonna turn a lot more liberal."
Marian, a long-time Republican, also blamed the media for McCain’s loss."I can’t believe it. We lost, it’s the media," she said. "The media robbed John McCain of the presidency."But we’ll wake up tomorrow morning and life will continue. But it’s got a bitter taste."
Dan, who works in construction, said McCain had paid the price for not attacking Obama more aggressively. "I think McCain didn’t attack hard enough against Obama. In the political debates, I had the impression that he didn’t give straight answers," describing himself as "Dan the Builder".
*No, he didn’t say elegiac.

About Firedoglake

Hi, Julia.
I suspect you mean “flagrant” rather than fragrant. Although the individual probably was a stinker as well…
FunnyD
wearing the pedant hat today!
Hi Julia — typo – “flagrant”. This all smells but it’s not fragrant.
McPalin have laid the groundwerk for a new Sturm Abteilung.
Stupidity and ignorance know no bounds….
My favorite moment was Britt Hume surveying the crowd outside the White House and musing over the young people as if he thought it was a George Bush appreciation group. Then he read a sign saying “Evict Bush Now”, did a double take and said “I know he doesn’t really mean that.”
Damn there are a lot of lizard brains out there. They prolly picked up all that info between bags of Cheetos, pints of ice cream, bags of cookies and those hefty slices of cake and pie. All while soaking up all the wisdom from the networks, Faux in particular. The RNC would have gladly put them on its daily talking point email but they haven’t figured out how email works yet. It’s so new, doncha know.
Poor, poor losers. What a surprise to hear that there are bitter tragically misinformed people in this country. Although, some of what they say might hold some truth. The media did let McCain expose himself as a washed up never was with nothing to offer the country but more of the same failed, feed the rich, trickle down shit we have been fed by republicans for 30 years.
Picture of Dan the builder s/
aHAHAHA, sorry I missed that. I love to hate Brit Hume.
Wow, what a great post, Julia. Thanks. I am going to fwd this to a friend who wrote me today to let me know she enjoyed hearing a pundit on Fox News this morning joke about the White house now being the “Black house”…
Hi Julia.
I think the first word in the third paragraph of the quote should be Diamond, not Duncan.
On a substantive level, I tuned on CNBC when I came in this afternoon, and the first thing I heard was that Murdoch’s Newscorp either reported disappointing earnings or warned that earnings would disappoint (can’t remember which) and the stock price plunged 20% today. My schadenfreudefest has begun.

Yep, the racist jokes will begin in full throat right about now …
Hah ! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy …

what a day!
Anyone heard from finifinito and Donita recently ?
You’re telling me ! *g*
Also, I wonder what Rush is spewing on his show today. No, wait. I don’t.
GOP = Grand Oligarchical Plutocracy
These are low information voters. They don’t connect the dots. Most of the time they don’t even have the dots. The result is that they speak in non sequiturs. They only remember slogans, the names of the hot button issues, and that they don’t like someone or something. What I find shocking is that 48% of the American people pretty much fall into this group and voted for McCain, just possibly the lamest, certainly the meanest, most out of touch Presidential candidate I have ever seen.
Do you think we can get a grant to study what part of the brain dies when one becomes a rethug.
frist already knows the answer to that one
All day long I’ve been suddenly bursting into tears, with a heart full off all manner of emotion, mostly cathartic joy, bittersweet sadness for those who did not live long enough to see this, frustration at the civil rights struggle that remains to be fought for our glbt brothers and sisters, etc., etc.
But one moment of scary fear came when I read a thread on Democratic Underground which provided a copy of a page of comments the Fox Noise website comments section — which contained the most hideous Aryan-Nation-type racist remarks, the type which our friend David Neiwert has been documenting over the years (the Rose Garden being turned into a watermelon patch, and much worse. Y’all know what I mean. I won’t repeat any more of them). That such remarks could be featured on a “news” website is a disgrace and a horror.
Thank you for this thread. These people need to be watched like hawks. [The Secret Service and a renewed FBI and Justice Department will have their work cut out for them to prevent more Timothy McVeighs.] One thing to look forward to — I can hardly wait to see who President Obama will name to head the FCC.
Just got off the phone with an out-of-state acquaintance calling me for info on the Franken/Coleman recount. He finished up by saying “We’ll see if Obama remains president once the lawsuits about his not being born in America play out.” Completely insane. I asked him to tell me which lawsuits those were, and he told me he’d get back to me. I told him I was looking at photographs of Obama’s Hawaii birth certificate, and he kept repeating “Obama hasn’t responded to the lawsuits, that puts him in a pretty weak position.”
Wish someone would’ve sued George Bush to make him stop using that phony Texas accent, that’s what I wish.
Excellent post!
If you haven’t seen Karl Rove chased by truthseekers with video cameras, get used to scenes like this:

See Karl Run. Run Karl, Run!
28 year old dancer? In Phoenix? I didn’t realize Phoenix had a big theater scene…
Nope. Already been done.
You join the GOOP, you’re scheduled for a full cortical ablation.
These people are throwing sissy fits. They are besides themselves and loading up on guns and ammunition to stem the tide of Marxism. They say they love America but they turn on it at the drop of a hat.
Gee, I was born in the Territory of Hawai’i. I didn’t realize I wasn’t a native-born citizen. I must have committed voter fraud yesterday.
I think CNN started doing racial breakouts of the vote, which shows starkly the Republican view of the “real America” (read: Old America): McCain got 3% (yes that’s right, single digits) of the Black vote, somewhere around 27% of the Latino vote (IIRC), and about 53% of the White Male vote. How many brown faces did you see at McCain rallies? When Palin looked out over a sea of white faces and said, “He doesn’t think like we do,” you know what she had in mind.
Also get a look at the new Red and Blue regions:
Red region: Deep South + Great Plains
Blue region:
* ALL of New England;
* ALL of the Midwest.
* Atlantic states (Florida, North Carolina?, Virginia?),
* All of the West Coast states +Hawaii,
* most of the Southwest (California, New Mexico, Colorado)
Obama is the first really 21st Century president; Bush was a throwback to the days of WASP dominance. America will be a different place.
Bob in HI
You are describing where I live. My husband and I have been amazed at how clueless they are and some of them work for us. I told someone yesterday that I was happy since Obama appeared likely to win. She looked at me like I grew horns or something. Then I explained why as a veteran I felt that way. She looked really confused like she hadn’t heard any of this before. They honestly believe all the junk McCain and Palin spouted.
Let the verdict be said that McCain and Palin ran a largely negative, and at times dishonorable campaign. Their campaign followers took their cues from the top of the ticket. The finishing touch on this is that McCain and his apologists find ways to blame Obama for their behavior, avoiding any personal responsibility which honorable people take as a matter of pride.
Wherever critical thinking skills reside.
Sure they do

You counted California twice, Bob.
We have some more work to do in the West — Arizona and Nevada will join us next. Idaho and Utah will likely remain hardcore Republican territory.
The way the GOP is talking today, they’ll be a regional party centered in the Deep South in 2012. Unfortunately some of the thoughtful folks at Redstate are aware of the danger. Here’s hoping the Theocons ignore them.
See my 27
My husband was asked whether he was buying guns just for that reason earlier in the week. The guy weren’t joking and realized when my husband looked at him like he was crazy that maybe everyone didn’t think that way. Someone else did the same thing when my husband was going over medical insurance premiums. They truly can’t believe that a logging contractor/military retiree might not be completely a Republican.
Either McShame couldn’t control his party and campaign (hardly a leadership qualification) or he is as vile as the rest of the party
Did you tell him that McCain wasn’t born in the US? He was a Panama Canal baby. Tell him to take that and smoke it.
Th joke is that McCain is the one born outside the US in the Panama Canal Zone.
You must be talking about people like this.
LOL must learn to read and type faster.
“You counted California twice, Bob.”
’s OK. Its big enough to be two states *g*
Bob in HI
Politically California is really its own (messed-up) thing. Arizona, Nevada, NM and Colorado do have a lot in common. Utah should be stripped of Statehood and made a Territory again.
Take a gander at this report about Obama’s birth certificate…!
You betcha. I’m not sure the local gun shop did a lot of business. Folks up here could supply a small army with guns. Even the Mennonite families have guns for hunting.
You were probably looking at a certificate of live birth; not a birth certificate. The Obama is not a citizen has been going on for many months on the Republican blogs. The story is that Obama was born in Indonesia and his mother faked a birth in Hawaii. Recently, I saw on a blog that Rush had said this when Obama went to visit his gramma the week and a half before she died..that she wasn’t ill, he was going to Hawaii to do something about his birth certificate.
On October 31st, Health Department Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said that she and the registrar of Vital Statistics, Alvin Onaka, have personally verified that the health department holds Obamas’s original birth certificate.
On the 31st, Ohio magistrate rejected challenge to Obama’s citizenship. Judges in Seattle and Philadelphia have recently dismissed cases.
cool site jim!
belated happy birthday!!
What a bunch of knuckleheads.
There is an announcement in the Honolulu Advertiser of the birth of one Barack Hussein Obama II on August 4, 1961 to Mr and Mrs Barack Obama.
I guess Grams knew her grandson was destined to be President of the United States and planted that line in the Advertiser. Oooops, that won’t work, because the Advertiser got those from the Clerk of the City and County of Honolulu. Someone in the Clerk’s office knew he was destined …
Jesus, folks, take the tin foil outta your hats.
Here we go again: This is Yahoo’s new headline:
Get there wildly weaved story:

while aides stepped up the pace of transition work that had been cloaked in pre-election secrecy.
But, here’s Halperins’ new Headlline: “MSNBC: NO DECISION FROM EMANUEL”
I REPEAT WE DO NOT WANT RAAAAAAHHHHHHM TOUCHING OUR PRESIDENTS AGENDAS!
So pleaswe! Will someone just dart “the hard chargin’ Emanuel” and relocate the bastard to the Siberian Tundra, so we can all finally get some fu***ng sleep!
No, I meant fragrant. I think it stinks :)
probably, but [sic]

Raising the highest tax bracket from 35% to 39.6%? The highest bracket was taxed at 91% during Eisenhower’s administration. Do these people do anything but listen to Fox News & Rush Limbaugh?
