LGBT win here in NC : It looks like John Arrowood is going to cruise to a win for the Court of Public Appeals Judge. This would make him the first openly gay man to win a statewide elective office in NC. He had been appointed to a vacant post, so this was his first run. 61% Yes
39% No
Kos and CNN have called the Missouri Governors race for the Democrat, Jay Nixon. This is a pickup for Democrats, as Republican Governor Blunt chose not to stand for re-election, saying he "had accomplished" what he set out to do as Governor, in one term. Stay tuned.
Early results (22% reporting) for Florida Amendment 2, which would enshrine discrimination against all unmarried couples in the state constitution and also prevent same-sex marriage:

hey, wdd!
Indiana Governor (8% precincts reporting)
Winner: Daniels (R) 54%
Long Thompson (D) 43%
was never in doubt.
Don’t look at that as a barometer of the presidential race.
hey tod and wang, nothing zup here

Lotsa Hoosiers splittin’ their tickets?

Prop 8 – Just Say No !
It’s gonna be a looong nite…! ;-)
They can’t call something on 8% of the vote, can they jayt? Just like they’re calling Kentucky for McCane with 15%? I don’t get it.
Why would people split the ticket? Is Daniels a good gov? (That assumes he is going for reelection, or is he a first timer?)
Lotsa Hoosiers splittin’ their tickets?
yep. It’s going to be very, very close here.
I’m still picking McGramps, 50.5 – 49.5%, but hoping that I’m wrong.
The models that project from such low totals depend on the location within the state that the early results come from. Certain areas are more revealing than others.
he’s not been a bad governor at all. I’m not upset about that one.
Daniels is standing for re-election. He was Bush 43’s first budget director, so there was some hope a Democratic could hang the stinking albatross around his neck. Apparently Jill Long Thompson was unsuccessful with that.
If those numbers hold though, the Dem is really outperforming the poll numbers though, which would be a good sign nationally.
Mc Nasty wins SCarolina
McCane’s last statement according to KO:
Yesterday was a fun day. Great ride, great experience. Rallies have been remarkable. Look forward to being with you in the future.
MSNBC calling South Carolina for McCane.
MSNBC is calling South Cackalacky for McInsane…
come on peeps

Republics pulled their cash from the State two weeks ago
I don’t like the bastard myself but I believe that people are favoring him because he is lowering property taxes AND the state is one of the few with a surplus. Of course, this wont last since a lot of the money came from a one-time sale off of our highways to private corporations. And just wait until he has to make up for the lost revenue from the property tax “relief”. Schools here are already seeing how screwed they are.
Olbermann reporting “ticket splitting of biblical proportions” based on AP exit polls in Indiana. One-third of Mitch Daniels voters reported voting for Obama.

Righto. I used to know that. & jayt, thanks for the evaluation. So I guess everyone W hired wasn’t totally incompetent.

Jill Long Thompson was just a weak candidate.

Aha. Fiscal trickery. I wouldn’t have expected any less. Does take voters awhile to catch on, though.
Oh noooooooooooooo!!!!
McCain has 5 times as many electoral votes as Obama!!!!!!
Even that Filipino Cook is pretty good …
A Musgrave defeat would be a tremendous victory for fair-minded Americans dedicated to equality and tolerance. She perennially introduced the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would enshrine “only marriage between a man and a woman” in our federal constitution.
of course you are right,i mean correct, pussycat is here
Bouncing between here and Al Giordano and feel like I got everything I need. Al just updated his latest post with this:

Thanks, eCAHN, I think!
Deep breaths. They are from Kentucky and SCarolina, as expected.
See, it shoulda been Hillary! She’d be dominating by now!! Oh NOES!!!11!1

OK.
Breathe in…
Thanks.
Sounded like a loser, no?
To do it the Republic way, they will likely try to raise a sales tax. The more regressive the tax, the more GOPers like it.
Actually, I believe the initial tax increases will be on “sin” (alcohol and smokes). One way or another, Daniels will have to make up for the loss of funds from property taxes.
He purchased his win the same way the later Roman Emperor’s did – bribing the electorate.
Linky?
Thanks Teddy.
digg
As a NYer, one of my regrets is that I’ve never been important enough to bribe.
party mix is ready!
shhh – don’t tell Christy – she thinks I can’t cook.
I was for Hillary but I think it’s exhilarating that we’re about to elect an African American. I’m trying to visualize what the black kids are going to feel like tomorrow when they walk into school.
Yes, and he had that “other” look. Sometimes he just looks entirely different than usual. Can’t explain it, but it’s not just the camera angle. I’ve seen it too many times.
Time fer me to haul ass.

Robin Hayes (R-Inc) 30,969 42%
Good point. I had a teacher (niece) from NYC public schools for the weekend & it’s a Q I didn’t think to ask her. She would have a good feel for it and would have answered it in an interesting way.
The BBC is really funny. /s

LMAO… The anchor just described Illinois as the state with wide lawns and narrow minds. (a famous quote by someone whose name I missed).
Kos has called West Virginia for the incumbent Democratic governor, Joe Manchin, but is reporting no results.
It was Hemmingway.
looks like muskrat is losing … ;)
i’m serious:
all year long
Anyone know where to find the Prop 8 tallies?
Musgrave goes down.
Sweet.
OT: Not that it matters now, but NC just flipped back to Obama.
Edging towards dying happy.

That’s sweeter then Dole.
Just as well. Pot smoking greyhounds aren’t as fast.
OT:
Congratulations to Howard Dean.
‘Hey, it worked for the other guys’
;>)
That is really nice !
Yep. Props to the Doctor.
I think that I’m still in shock. My old, old parents called me at 11:00! I told them that this the most important event in my life. My life.
Gotta luv MA. Lived there for many years and could not find anything wrong with it, except when it didn’t work. Like my NYS, a fabulous part of the USA geography.
Just as well. Pot smoking greyhounds aren’t as fast.
“Whoa dudes. There was a mondo tasty looking rabbit here just a minute ago. wtf?”
“Where’s that snack-bar?”
Two Udalls in the Senate.
Incredible team work all around … for recognizing this was the way to run a campaign …
That’s the impression I’ve gotten, although I’ve yet to travel farther east than Indiana.
Would prefer nonlegacy candidates.
Stop with the Senator Obama! David Gregory just called him President Elect Obama.
We could like, totally EAT that rabbit!
NPR just had Lehrer saying that the country has had enough of partisanship. Brooks says that the victory margin wasn’t that big. Shields for once in his life pointed out that after FDR and Johnson Obama had the third best winning margin of any Democratic Presidential candidate. Tonight was a big win but there are still a lot of Very Serious People out there on the right, in the media, and on Obama’s staff. So our work is cut out for us.
well, this electoral map just shoots the shit outta my FDL contest entry.
Yay!
Did Franken win?
lol tweety is trying real hard to say that ppl don’t read blogs
Gregory referred to Grant Park as being on the south side of Chicago (wrong). Maybe relative to his north shore digs when he lived there.
thanks. I’m not happy about those results. CA might be about to concede sovereignty to a gaggle of out-of-state religious nuts
I’ve traveled far & wide in the US when I was on Wall St. Did not enhance my impression of the country, which was established in my HS graduating class in 1962 as a fabulous mixed heritage of wonderful accomplishments. (We self-segregated as HS students still do, but we loved each other anyhow.)
Tweety had better think differently if he wants to win in 2010.
o
Any possibility if Prop 8 passes that the California Supreme Court will slap it down?
yes, absolutely! muskrat drowns … crushed … ;)
lmao, 09*
LOL!
The Supreme Court has been saved.
are they calling this a landside?
I don’t understand that either.
Already has, this is a Constitutional change if, god forbid, it happens.
smith losing in oregon
Tweety needs to stick to pecksniffery, with a minor in panty sniffing.
;>)
Barack will speak at the top of the hour! Our new President!!!
I’ve seen quite a bit of the center, west, and a little of the southern part of the country. Was fortunate enough to meet nice people in most places and am inclined to forget the exceptions. Having grown up in one of the flattest parts of the U.S., I was quite taken by the Rockies.
NPR, National Propaganda Radio. Setting the stage to insure the status quo is preserved to the greatest extent possible.
Hope so.
Collins win very disappiinting.
Some good news for Al Franken. Was just listening to Fox news (yes, I switch to Fox when CNN is on commercial. :) ) Right now the race is tied, and Karl Rove just admitted that a good portion of the remaining districts (the Duluth area) are usually heavily Democratic areas. Here’s hoping.
Brooks continues to spin. Obama has never risked a career ending vote the way McCain has. (Of course, McCain hasn’t done this.) He then compliments Obama for the “Serious” people he has around him.
Obama up.
lmao, thar are soo many puns in there that’ll i’ll solidly bite the inards of jowl. ;)
looks like there’s a tiny glimmer of hope on 8. San Fran city hasn’t reported yet
Marin 77% Obam wowee
Oh, it will be sooooo nice to have an articulate President.
Clinton was sooo much better in that regard than Obama.
w00t!
Personally, I think both Clinton and Obama are great speakers, but I feel sorry for the comedians. They’ll have so much less material sans a Bush or a Palin. :)
Oh shut up Tweety with that “Barack Obama hasn’t reached across the aisle” cr*p
i hate that “FREAK” Brooks
He’s been elected for what – five minutes? – and already they’re complaining?

To my many friends in California:
You need to do two things. The first thing is to get an initiative on the 2010 ballot that repeals Proposition 8. Then you need to pass it.
At the same time, you must pass another constitutional amendment to limit the initiative. Under the current constitutional rules, any small collection of nutjobs can get their absurd amendment on the ballot time and time again. Change the initiative to require issues that have not been through the legislative process to attain a supermajority to pass. Say, 60% plus 1 vote. Maybe 67% plus 1.
At 50% plus 1 it’s too easy to pass batshit crazy stuff like Prop 8, and Howard Jarvis’ Prop 13. In fact, much of your current budget trouble can be laid on Jarvis’ tombstone.
Change it, my friends. For your sake.
That’s a big 10-4
Maybe I should be a little clearer.
I’m no longer a California resident, I haven’t been in going on 30 years now. But I got my secondary education and my undergraduate higher education in California, back when it had the world’s best comprehensive system of education. It was already fraying at the edges a little. It’s just another higher education system now.
That troubles me greatly. What Californians do with their constitution is their business. But I’ve seen enough other systems (Kansas, Texas and New Mexico) up close to see some of the flaws in California’s system. I still love California, and I want to see things changed for the better.
God bless you all, and I’m so sorry my former neighbors in the Central Valley are … well, I need to visit family there. I’m sorry they’re the way they are.
I wasn’t kidding. I agree. We had it and we let it slip through our fingers, beginning with Raygun. And Jarvis-Gann really finished us.
I can’t even tell you how many hours I spent and how hard I worked to make sure that pathetic shit never passed. I can’t believe the repigs in this state would repeal peoples rights when those rights threaten no one. Why do they hate? I guess they don’t read that bible they are always talking about. It is disgusting. And I am one of those poor fuckers in the central valley. Dark Blue girl in a pig red area.
Ian is upstairs!
A Mandate for Progressivism and a Repudiation of Conservatism
I’ve lost faith in Minnesota.
Those knuckleheads sent Michele Bachman back to Washington. And you’re gonna send Coleman back too?
Has the boreal wind started blowing through your ears or something?
I hate legislation via proposition. I have considered voting no on all of them. I find it almost as irritating as term limits.
wtf?
If it were just legislation, it would only be bad. But this atrocity will amend the state Constitution. Worse that fugly.
There was NO reason for it. Hate pure and simple hate.
You are so right!! That and the need to pass a budget with a two thirds vote! How fucking dumb is that? I mean it allows the minor minority to have a strangle hold on the budget and in our case the rethuglians to create havoc and even let their buddies buy million dollar yachts and pay no, none, zip taxes on them, how fucking unequal is that when if you or I buy a 1000.00 boat we have to pay taxes on it. That is just another reason that the schools here in California have fallen to the bottom of the barrel. The Rethuglians don’t care they are rich and their kids go to the best private schools and they say fuck you to the rest of the people!!
tbsa, I didn’t mean to tar everyone in the San Joaquin Valley with that brush. Just somewhere between 60 to 80% of them. Probably including my sister and her husband. Not sure about my brother and his wife.
I know a lot of people worked hard against 8. I did what I could from southern New Mexico. Just remember this: the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints had a lot to do with this, allied with the homophobic faction of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
I really meant what I wrote earlier about the citizen initiative. You have to change 8 while it’s easy (or easier) to do. Then you need to change the initiative to require a supermajority for things that have not been through the Assembly and the Senate. Nutzoid stuff can be killed in many ways in the Lege. The requirements for ballot access are so low that the idiots have figured out that they can get stuff that would never get past a semiconscious legislator in front of the electorate. Then, they need only present 50% + 1 of them that their idea is good.
Change 8. Repeal 13. And then keep the nutzoids away from the initiative. The Greeks feared democracy for good reasons — mob rule is dangerous.
Nothing makes them happier than to reach out and slap some people they don’t know.
MSNBC has called Bachman over Tinklenburg in Minnesota. Apparently hatred of colleagues is good politics west of Minneapolis.
I thought Minnesotans were clearer thinkers than that.
Wasn’t the 2/3 requirement on the budget yet another batshit-wing initiative?
That’s just a crazy idea. Batshit crazy. Really stooooopid.
NBC calling IN for Obama!
Looks like everyone just called Indiana for Obama.
Everyone but CNN.
For whatever that’s worth after the historic win….
I just saw on the TV that it is so close they both had a TV announcement that there will not be an answer ’till tomorrow at the earliest.
Can’t sleep. Looks like I’m not alone.
Apparently most of them only get Fox News on basic cable.
fork.. i still hope mr eat shit and die smith loses
fingers and toes crossed
I’ve heard that Bachmann’s district if very conservative from what Gramma J has said. Does she comment anymore? Haven’t seen her for awhile.
I dont’ want to sleep. I’m still kinda leery of the ‘go to bed, wake up to the guy i did NOT vote for winning.’ once again.
I’m gonna be leery of that for a long time after the last 8 years.

Beer run brb
Oh yeah. And the Albuquerque Urinal was 2 for 5 in their federal endorsements. They endorsed McCain (the endorsement read for McCain Mark 2000, apparently they slept through McCain Mark 2008), White in District 1 (lost to Heinrich) and Tinsley in District 2 (lost to Teague).
Take that Albuquerque Publishing Company.
I hear ya!
peace
Teddy,
You’ll have a better read on the CA electorate than I do. Are there enough votes out in the Bay and Central Coast to turn the tide?
Wow, 12% of precincts reported in Darcy’s race. Hope there’s no shenanigans for “The Sheriff”
Burner 34,048 — 53%
Reichert(Incumbent) 30,039– 47%
Yeah, Michele Bachman apparently won. Go figure.
I figured it probably was. That’s one of those things that could never get past any semiconscious legislator. After one term they understand enough about the budget process to realize the implications of a batshit nutzoid idea like requiring a 2/3 supermajority.
I’ll bet after the disasters of the last two budgets that y’all could dump that requirement too with another initiative. And while you’re at it, rethink term limits too.
Difference between Franken and Coleman 78 votes W/ 99% reporting
One term? Heck, one session.
None of Santa Cruz County is reported yet.
None of Alameda County (Oakland) is reported yet.
San Luis Obispo is less than 10% reported.
SF is more than 2/3s reported.
LA is less than 1/3 reported.
So, with less than a quarter million votes separating Prop 8 and NO, I suppose there are theoretically enough votes (40% accounted for so far) to make up the difference. People say we should be patient.
It’s very hard to know what to feel. I’m very excited about our new President, but I’m very worried about becoming a second-class citizen. Strange.
Too close, Mike. Way too close.
on cnn it’s showing 94% reporting. where are you seeing 99%?
El Tinklenberg would have been a folk hero for the Blue Dogs, and welcomed to Village teevee studios with open arms. Can you imagine the fuss Tweety would have made over him? I’d almost rather have a very marginalized Bachmann showing up to make an idiot of herself on Hardball.
We can defeat her in 2010 with a Better Democrat.
LA’s early returns were running somewhat in favor of 8. But maybe that doesn’t include the woods, like West, Brent and Holly?
More and better sacrificial lambs.
Teddy, I’m wishing I were a CA resident so that I could vote against that execrable Prop 8.
Don’t forget NM-2, if Harry Teague turns out to be the Blue Dog I expect him to be.
To my eternal shame, I signed Teague’s nominating petition. I believe that contested primaries are best, and I wanted my guy (Bill McCamley — he’ll be back) tested.
The goddam blue dog carried Little Texas big enough to win the nomination.
Five points separate Prop 8 and NO now, with 48% of the votes counted.
We voted Teddy and we are rooting for you and for all gay and lesbian couples and singles in California. No one should be made to feel like a second class citizen! It is just not right and reeks of hate! I just can’t understand those who hate so much!!

Well, good night my friends. I’ve got my share of tonight’s bottle of bubbly wine on board, and I’ve got to write an exam tomorrow.

nite nahant
It was on the TV.
yeah, I’m not happy with what happened with the gay propositions tonight. Essentially, America has declared gays the new n***ers.
But what can be done by proposition can be undone by proposition.
President Obama.
I was so afraid I would never be able to say that.
With McCain or any other R there would have been no hope of climbing out of the unbelievable mess Bushco & previous R’s have made.
With Obama there is definitely now the opportunity we can return to a reality based country again. I wasn’t born during WW2 but remember well when I was a kid the history of the wonderful American Can Do attitude during & after that war & what americans accomplished. The dinosaur R party is the party of We Can’t unless it lines their pockets. I have come to believe that that is their idea of democracy.
My husband & I often talk about what it would have been like when in the 70’s our government had gotten behind supporting making solar technology economically feasible for average american homes when oil prices skyrocketed. Of course, then the R spin ridiculed Pres Carter wearing his cardigan sweaters.
Obama has to walk a mine field to lead us into being a Can Do country again. It can, & I think will, be done but it will be a huge task to overcome the powerful money people that don’t want to change a thing.
Democratic Lt. Governor Bev Perdue is now the Governor-elect of North Carolina.
We can also put a proposition on the ballot to outlaw the Mormon religion in California.
Seems fair enough to me.
Been a long day

Oh shit!
Well, if he’s really “the one” then he should have had all our problems solved by now. I guess it just shows “that one” doesn’t mind letting Bush suffer being prez a few more months. After all, it is upholding the Constitution to wait until he’s sworn in. And we *do* want to uphold the Law after all we’ve done to keep it.
But, by January 20th at about 1pm all our problems had better be solved or I’m going to be very disappointed.
Sigh. If only it was that easy. It’s hard work…might be 3:15 before it really all gets done.
Heh.
Bad precedent anyway. Shoulda been a drug clinic/rehab center.
Do that and you’d have a LOT of people yellen’ in your ear about Religious Freedom and all that San Francisco Liberal Values crap.
Be gracious winners I say. But, party to celebrate too.
