I hope Franken pulls it off. McCain got his ass kicked in PA!! So much for all the stumping he did here. PA gave him the middle finger in return. Yeahhhh!!
well, there was this guy in chicago who was needing some time as well as other races to cover – i’m just glad the presidential was not a nail biter and we are not sitting on the edge of our seats about who won.
I ma too tired to type (or think) the Obama Victory Party in Oakland was unreal. Danced for two hours after the victory speech (seems like all Dems have rhythm) then outside a near riot ensued as revelers gathered outside the Convention Center to greet passing motorists, some riding on the roofs of their cars. Police moved in and tried to clear the street then gave up and blocked traffic.
The campaign was waged on scare tactics, not truth. Our side was complacent as summertime polls showed us winning 55-38. That margin evaporated with the ad featuring Gavin Newsom crowing at City Hall, “It’s coming, whether you like it or not! As California goes, so goes the nation!” on the day the Supreme Court ruled in May.
After that, the YES ads were all about children being taught gay marriage in elementary school, churches losing their tax exemption, and churches being forced to marry gays.
We only made the argument about fairness in the last three weeks, as we raced to recapture our lead. And there’s a reverse Bradley effect — people lie to pollsters to be thought not a bigot.
Finally, it’s important to remember that, in 1978, a majority of Americans were opposed to mixed-race marriages. Our President-elect, a product of such a marriage, was 17 at the time. Rights aren’t won at the ballot box. And, perhaps, they can be taken away there.
The fact that it passed with the voters approval is very persuasive to the courts…sorry, I don’t agree either, just saying what the opponents will say…
nope. i’m from new york, lived in israel many years, then in oregon many more years and now i’ve been in texas for a bunch more years. but i REALLY want franken to win. and norm coleman to lose.
I blame media. This country wouldn’t be in such a freaking mess if we had media that actually did true journalism.
Civics classes in public schools wouldn’t hurt either.
We need to work on electing Better Democrats in place of Bad Democrats, and let Republican districts elect the losers they like so much.
Bachmann?
Schmidt?
Anyone who would pull a lever for either one of them doesn’t deserve my attention. I surely won’t spend any more time worrying about who their Congresscritter is. They like who they have.
What’s on my mind? Here’s an email I sent to my siblings tonight – one of whom is a red state rightee. I am sure she voted for McCain (in VA – YAY – VA went to Obama)
OK – listen up.
We are the children of a mother who grew up in a country where the people illegally took up arms against an oppressive government. She was brave enough to move here so that we, her children, would not have to do the same.
But something happened on the way to nirvana.
We now live in a country where the government determined, without the will or knowledge of the people, that torture is an acceptable practice. Where illegally wiretapping Americans expressly violating the 4th amendment of the constitution is tolerable. Where using the United States Justice Department to illegally punish your political opponents is common practice. Where denying persons the right of habius corpus – the only civil right written into the text of the constitution is – A-OK. And then there’s the mortal sin. An illegal war against a country that never harmed us and did not have the capacity to do so.
Until tonight I had one foot out of here and into Ireland or anyplace else in the EU that I wanted to live. Of course I am not nearly as brave as mommy. And that’s a good thing because, now?
I am sure you have considered a more litigious concept, i.e, filing suit against all the churches who have supported this proposition on the grounds that, in supporting such political issues, they have forfeited their tax-exempt status. (They are surely attempting to lobby WRT political issues in violation of their tax-exempt status.) I know such issues would not be considered for prosecution under the Bush administration, but there is a new sheriff in town (as of tonight) and the potential liabilities are considerable. Perhaps a new concept in opposition would not be untoward?
I am ashamed of my state, because it was so ignorant of how bad Palin is before the national press looked into it. She got a boost today from Tim Petoumanous, the hired counsel of the State employees commission which looked into Troopergate. If Ted wins the election — oy gevalt! — he will have to resign or be kicked out of the Senate, and she might appoint herself. I think she will, and many Alaskans will say good riddance to her. Such is our feeling about the national government. That will give her 6 years to rehabilitate her image, which is fairly tarnished, for reasons that need not be catalogued here.
This newly-second class citizen, whose rights appear to have been ripped away by his fellow Californians, is going to bed now.
You simply cannot imagine how bitter this feels. Really, really awful to have rights stripped away by a vote of the populace. It’s never happened before in America, and there’s a good reason — it’s a terrible way to treat another human being. Just awful.
I will always look back on the day America elected Barack Obama with very mixed feelings.
I gotta work again tanight so party harty Firepups and keep the music and the conversation goin Sister Sunshine…I told my kids again tanight that every generation gets one shot to sit on the shoulders of history and this is their time now…I ken rest easier now’cuz President Obama is gunna let my kids take their future back and he and our children are gunna get it done if we ken help ‘em get rid of the shit we dragged into this fight.
It ain’t gunna be easy and the hump fascist party is gunna be leaner and meaner at least until the corporations run outta money and the sane survivors get rid of the batshit crazies like Michelle Backmann and Sarah Moose Mammeries.
And Citizens CTuttle and Raven, if yer out there brothers, we will sleep better tanight and the restless souls of those we left behind rest a bit easier tanight too.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE NEXT BATTLE HAS ALREADY STARTED!!!!
How can we educate our voters even with the inyernet when the US ranks around 36 in media freedom. How sad is that in the supposedly democracy of the world? Aren’t we deliberately left ignorant?
Teddy – here in NYC the NYC council just decided that the term limits law can be overcome by their will (or sumpthin). Can you copy that? Jeebus. How dare they all!!
i’ve got lotsa dairies up here in tillamook county – figured its a red county but i’ll be a blue dot joining other blue dots up here shading it more purple.
Awesome…he can piss off a monkey with his wit. I can’t wait to see him on the Senate floor. Eyeballs, legs, fingers, toes, disposition and brain lobes…this is really uncomfortsble.
It looks like the cultivated fields of fascism in Alaska, Utah, Texas and the rump of the old Confederacy are bearin their noxious fruit jest at the time we need political unity…Obama is the only politician I see out here that can possibly create coalitions of the “moderates” left in the rump fascist party in order to get any real change done…maybe it’ll be better that Obama hasta bring a couple a “conservatives” along for the big stuff…maybe the solutions will stick better.
The good and the bad have happened tonight.
But this is the just plain interesting.
And as mentioned earlier, when and if Franken becomes a Senator – he will be sworn in by… Dick Cheney.
For this, I cannot wait.
No, I think that at this time the coalitions and “compromises” that a shrewd politician like Obama ken make will stick better and bring us closer ta changin’ the political culture faster’n rammin’ stuff through with jest the Democratic majority. The stars are linin’ up right for 2012 in the Senate so it’s gunna be possible ta get a few of the endanged species of “moderate” wingnuts ta cross over.
Suppose for the sake of argument that Stevens wins but then has to go to jail. Would Governor Palin then get to appoint his successor? Does she know of anyone more qualified than herself? Just askin’. ;-)
greenwarrior@99:
Fantastic!!!
I would love to have Franken & Tinlenberg but Franken is more important in terms of impact. Idiots that put Bachmann back in office.
I have to say that I have not felt this relaxed in years, probably 8. I didn’t even start celebrating with wine until after I knew Obama won.
Eternal vigilence is the price we pay …and Obama wouldn’t have it any other way, our pressure from the left is gunna be felt a hell of a lot more now and the “moderates” who are gunna be fightin’ for the survival of the Republican Party are gunna be plenty receptive to compromise.
Civics classes in public schools wouldn’t hurt either.
Yeah, civics is good. But, it probably scares Conservatives that young minds would learn about the world of today before learning about 2000 years ago. You know, “fair and balanced”.
Besides, if you teach about the world around kids then they might learn about people’s bad habits, like hippies, drinking & politics. Can’t have that can we?
Wouldn’t you just LOVE to be a fly on the wall to hear some Republicans cryin’ in their beer this evening & tomorrow?
Zeddy
I hope Franken pulls it off. McCain got his ass kicked in PA!! So much for all the stumping he did here. PA gave him the middle finger in return. Yeahhhh!!
Hi Suzzanne my first double

Way to go Virginia!
Hey Suz!
well, there was this guy in chicago who was needing some time as well as other races to cover – i’m just glad the presidential was not a nail biter and we are not sitting on the edge of our seats about who won.
Hey bb, yeah man — it’s so good to finally live in a blue state!
Latest on Franken…

franken’s up about a 1000 votes with 96% of the vote in.
begich is gaining on toobz. he’s now about 3000 behind with 66% in.
Norm is pissing himself. I love this.

The Truth will prevail.

teddy, how can this initiative not be in opposition to the cal supreme decision?
I ma too tired to type (or think) the Obama Victory Party in Oakland was unreal. Danced for two hours after the victory speech (seems like all Dems have rhythm) then outside a near riot ensued as revelers gathered outside the Convention Center to greet passing motorists, some riding on the roofs of their cars. What a night and the dawn of a new day!
I’m pissed that Michelle Bachmann is re-elected…! :-(
can’t the supremes rule it unconstitutional is what i was so awkwardly trying to ask above
Thanks, Suz!
Crossing eyes for you man good luck..take your protien pill and put your helmet on.
Teddy, oy….how could so many be so unenlightened?
Coastal urban not in yet stay positive.
it’s really beautiful that michelle obama is going to be first lady. and i loved obama promising his girls their puppy.
From Barack’s favorite pop singer!

wonder what kind they get and do the girls each get one or do they just get one total?

I hate to say this, but the courts generally take a stand that they don’t interfere with the will of the people…if it works in their party’s favor…
Kinda put’s Nixon’s Checkers to shame, eh? ;-)
but the ca supremes ruled that the last one was discriminatory. what has changed in 8 that would get it past that ca supreme decision?
iirc he said ‘girls’ and ‘puppy’ so that sounded like one puppy.
green warrior @8:
Ditto
Are you from Minn?
(((( Teddy )))) It’s so late here, and because of that I can’t be as eloquent as I’d like. But dammit, Prop 8 needed to be voted down.
Off to sleep, finally. ‘Night pups, and thank you all for your excellent work.
Better grab the kleenex before you watch this:

Alaska obviously likes their Repugs…
Gah, the stupid it burns…!
i had to go look it up on wiki. :)
The fact that it passed with the voters approval is very persuasive to the courts…sorry, I don’t agree either, just saying what the opponents will say…
Aloha, LL!

g’nite ll (and any other leavign sleepy pup i may have missed)
Prop 22 in 2000 modified the civil code; Prop 8 adds the language to the Constitution.
Quite correct, on both counts.
I give up on helping people elect decent Democrats.
Some people deserve the representation they have, surely Alaskans do.
Yeah, ET will not be pleased with a fair number his fellow Alaskans.
thanks teddy ((( )))
I hear ya, Teddy! Hawaii did well…
Both are members of the Progressive caucus…! :-)
We need to work on electing Better Democrats in place of Bad Democrats, and let Republican districts elect the losers they like so much.

Gerry mandering districts reversal
hey helen – how ya been?
Good question! I’m not familiar with Alaska’s methodology for replacing senators…! Each state has their own rules…
Hey Suzanne – very busy -new job and seriously thinkin of leavin. Sorry – droppin those g’s seems natural. ‘Cept she (who shall not be named) LOST!!!!
i think its the gov that appoints the replacement.. but i could be wrong…
No, I’m pretty sure the Governor will appoint a replacement until a special election in 2010 to fill out the term.

that’s my understanding too.
Alaskan Big Mitch at the Beach haus said this…
What a nightmare scenario…! Palin in the Senate…!

Not so much tonight.
How can we educate our voters even with the inyernet when the US ranks around 36 in media freedom. How sad is that in the supposedly democracy of the world? Aren’t we deliberately left ignorant?
Sorry Teddy, it sucks.
hey norske – we forking did it – now we gotta do it again so folks like teddy are not declared ok to discriminate against.
cnn: 98% of the vote in and franken is up around 2000 votes.
WHERE ARE THE RETURNS ON THE ALASKA SENATE RACE??!!!
Purposefully.
I agree, Norske! Should be interesting to see what happens with the SOFA and what Iraq will do…!
Teddy – here in NYC the NYC council just decided that the term limits law can be overcome by their will (or sumpthin). Can you copy that? Jeebus. How dare they all!!
on the cnn website: begich is down around 4000 votes right now.
Here’s the latest, Norske…
alaska election results site
Suzzanne did you know your Oregon county is 74% Republican. The Oregonian has a county map most are red. You may be surrounded…no white vans?
Here’s MSNBC’s ticker for all the races nationwide…!
i’ve got lotsa dairies up here in tillamook county – figured its a red county but i’ll be a blue dot joining other blue dots up here shading it more purple.
Awesome…he can piss off a monkey with his wit. I can’t wait to see him on the Senate floor. Eyeballs, legs, fingers, toes, disposition and brain lobes…this is really uncomfortsble.
In desperation, if the cause is just, she can always swim out to sea…she has the skillz…
NC handily reelected the mean and loathsome Virginia Foxx and Patrick McHenry. It was otherwise looking like a blue state today. Go figure.

Yes, a lifelong ironranger.
Not in my neck of the woods…! ;-)
Teddy it does suck. I’m terribly sorry.
franken’s up about 1400 with 98% of the vote in, as per cnn.
Unfortunately, I think you’re right about bringing in some conservatives… Not that I particularly relish that thought…!
you’re in a whole different lattitude dood – up here its forking survival suit water in the winter and wetsuit in the summer.
i’m calling it a nite pups. see ya in the morning.
Aloha, GW!

Yeah – awesome video Suzanne. Thanks!
Furious with CA, but very very proud of Ohio. Just shows we’ve got an even longer fight ahead.
