Current seats: 55 (not counting Lieberman).
Maximum possible seats: 59 (NCL).
The Democrats need to pick up 9 seats to get to the magic filibuster-proof number, 10 to get there without Joe Lieberman. It looks like there are 11 10 9 Republican seats in play, so the Democrats need to run the table to get to 60 can’t get to 60 without Lieberman.

hi Eli!
hi Eli…………..im nauteous
Eli !
Noron says there is an Obama tsunami in North Carolina with Liddy Dole expected to lose her seat.
Seconded.
digg
Eli, your post really lays it out clearly, thanks.
Are we there yet?
Thanks Eli! Great post!
Happy on behalf of all the Virginia Dems who worked their hearts out this round — again.
Senator Mark Warner…I like the sound of that.
I need a new paper bag. this one’s worn out.
Hi ya, Eli!!
I second that.
I say, can we get a peek at Mitch’s email right about now? :P
Aloha, Eli!
boy, I would sooo love to say goodbye to Norm Coleman, Liddy Dole, Saxby Chambliss, Ted Stevens, and Miss McConnell.
and the night isn’t gonna be complete without a Prop 8 win.
Amen jayt !
whats up in Va
booyah!
I sure hope so. Hagan’s pushback on the godless ad was some righteous campaigning!
Warner gives us 52 (counting Sanders & Lieberweasel)
we’re set to pick up OR, CO, NM, NH, AK, = 57
NC and MN = 59
I know you mean, prop 8 defeat. right?
I would LOVE to be able to say “Senator Al Franken!” Because Al is scrappy enough, smart enough, and Normy is crooked enough!
[passes dosido a couple of spare paper bags…gonna be a long night.]
We both meant that … that the “No” side wins
holy shit. If Obama is doing well in northeast Indiana like Mike Murphy just said, he could pull this state off.
It’s *blood* red up there.
my kingdom for some numbers out of GA
I saw your comment eCAHN, the pundits finally see that people puke at the sound of a republican politician!
I gotta go find that relaxation meditation thingy …
VA — We win we win we win we win
I keep forgetting I dont live there anymore :)
As I remarked a couple of days ago, having Franken in the senate would make watching all those hearings a lot less onerous.
eli, could you edit in party afiliation?
I don’t know who is a d and r in most cases
You betcha. Scarborough & Buchanan, wuddja believe?
I know you mean, prop 8 defeat. right?
yep. No means yay.

you know, if we can get even close to the 60 vote count the democrats can make the case that the reason republicans lost seats in power was because they closed the democrats down
in other words, another of roves tactics lost them even more power
that might work out very nicely for us, we might not even need the filibuster proof majority if we can make that case
thanx elliot
I’m just so nervous. sorry to nitpick.
and why is KY already red and all the other states still clear?
Indiana is very close! msnbc showing mccain ahead there. ughhhh!
Dean did a putdown on Scarborough.

Klan has strong roots in Indiana. Citizen Klansman: The Ku Klux Klan in Indiana 1921 – 1928
I suspect GOP uses them for their GOTV.
Woohoo!! Election protection daughter got a phone call from her team, they won the latest go around with local officials on their team having the right to be near the polling place – of course 100 feet away, but earlier people had been trying to make them go much farther away. Still quite a bit of voting in California. She’s the area poll captain for No on 8.
hows frankin look?
Yes.
it wasn’t likely we’d win kentucky, but man I would have loved to pitched a shut out
ah dreams
Oh! which part of california?
msnbc showing mccain ahead there. ughhhh!
waaay too early to call. Just the small (rural) counties so far.
And with maybe 40% having voted early, it’s going to be a while for those to be counted too.
Did you see KO & David Gregory snicker as Pat spoke ? PatBuchs wore his Tartan Tie …
I know, but I hate that a red state got to go first. I’m that nervous.
West Virginia for McCain
only got home a few minutes ago. how’s it going? looking good?
LOL, yeah, DG was cutting in quite a bit like “yeah, ok, grandpa, I’m going to get another mini quiche.”
Brokaw just came on my teeVEE time to change the channel.
Maybe I’ll just listen to music and scarp the TV. We are getting the results served hot here.
Missed the snigger. Mostly I just listen, not look.
Right?
No, left.
Left?
Right.
Left, right?
Right.
there are less than 20% Precincts reporting in Indiana – and the motherlodes of Lake County and Marion haven’t closed polls yet
We need that!
Where’s Wobbs? We’ll have to remind her.
up by as much as 6 in polls last night
I was going to use “too early to call” as my drinking game, but I have to go pick up one of my kids. Carry on.
‘zackly.
lol.
tastey!
She’s prolly out … GOTV …
Intrade has shown a 10 point margin in Franken’s favor of late:
http://www.intrade.com/index.j…..nID=471500
I’m dying!
59 would be glorious; 60 would be coalescing of massive karma.
I would perform absolutions of untold magnitudes to be able to reach 61 and tell Joe Lieberman to find a short pier. But that’s just way out!
thanks! are you saying “too early to call”? One for the road! drink, thunk, gtg!
Vermont is blue
And Dan Barlett on mine; Gads…CBS has hired him.;((

what is vermont’s history?
Polls are closing in NH and I am out of gas. Is there a decent TV program, worth watching, or are they all talking idiots?
I am getting some Merlot and wishing for 60 while I read FDL.
waaay early, and recall in the Primaries how they intentionally took their sweet ass time counting in those two areas – mostly as pushback twoards Republic establishment
goopers tried stuff again a week and half ago . . . but sadly, gave up
teehee
Dugg! SHOVEL on over there! I was No. 6 and we all know how Eli is worth soooooo much more!
Believe it to be blue.
I was contemplating making “sea change” the drinking phrase of the evening except for two things; a) I’m not drinking yet; and, b) if I were, I think I’d have to go to the hospital later.
“Watershed” might be dangerous, too.
I think I might go with “repudiation,” and I’ll qualify that with the caveat that it only be uttered by right wing pundits; and I’ll only drink milk.
It was a Spanish colony until 1923 when it was sold to Russia. At the time of the Russian Revolution we liberated it.
Georgia now reporting 1-3% prec reporting
In Pinellas County FL Obama 53.3, McSFB 45.3. Odious Amend 2 54.7 Yes, 45.6 No. Damn. But that’s only my county. About 2/3 precincts reporting. Don’t know if it includes absentee.
Democracy Now! is airing from 8-1, radio, TV, online.

mccain wins south carolina
“Bible Spice!”
I love it! Could have been Hockey Spice, too, ‘cept that would clash with “Sporty”.
I guess the Republican ticket, then was Bible Spice and Old Spice?
it’s now three electoral votes for obama and sixteen for mccain

Pennsylvania 4 Obama !
Obama takes Pennsylvania!!!!
Woot !!
Boom Boom Boom
It’s over baby!!!!!!!!
That other thread doesn’t work.
President Obama
Woo Hoooooooo!!!!
Yeah1!!!!!!!!!!
Where did everyone go?
We’re up here
Liddy Dole is toast!
Woot !
heh. Doug Holtz-Eakin up on MSNBC.
I’m gonna miss that guy.
Yes the BBC is pushing back on the McCain bot about temperment, not experience.
um… if McConnell and Chambliss win, then that means there’s no way we get to 60 without JoHo right?
It’s really interesting to watch non American media cover the American election. Sad in a way, but truthful.
I’m confused as hell. Are all these PCT stamps?
Are there multiple threads going at the same time.
Obama hasn’t won PA yet. WTF?
Damn. I shouldn’t have gone fishing this afternoon…
T-
VA looks ugly. FL and NC promising. Ubelievable.
Okay, CNN called it for Pennsylvania.
Cue the victory cigar!!!
Congrats firepups!!! We would not be in this place without you and our fearless leaders.
Peace!!!
T-
The BBC just said the Republican stronghold in VA have been reported and the large numbers needed in the rural area are not there.
The 60 number is overblown. There are a bunch of Democratic Senators: Pryor, the Nelsons, Landrieu, etc. that make 60 meaningless on most issues.
Georgia just called by Fox and NBC but the BBC said they were not going call it.
no reporting from New York yet?
That Kentucky race is close now (50%-50%). I’d love to see McConnell, the obstructionist, out as minority leader.
Obama might whip the blue dogs into shape.
Wouldn’t that be beautiful?!
That would Georgia for McCain by Fox and NBC not yet by the BBC.
might ?
Thanks, Eli, for all you do.
One nit to pick, however: Mark Pryor (D-AR) is not running unopposed.
Meet Rebekah Kennedy
I’d call that about 90% unopposed.
;~P
Sadly true; and there are no Lincoln Chafees on the other side to offer even a modicum of return on the favor. Can we still strip Lieberman of his chair?
That’s why I hope if we can’t get 60 without Liarman I hope we come up short, just so he won’t be able to jerk the Dems’ chains.
Chuck Todd still pimping the “it ain’t over yet” stuff.
what the fuck, chuck?
Yes.
Chuck always does that. He wants a horserace.
Giuliani on ABC says Palin had the qualifications despite most voters thinking she didn’t.
Hey, Kennedy got my vote…)
please.
yeah, I’m surprised by the va numbers … nate sez it’s better than it looks in aggregate …
polls still open for another 10 mins …
Polls close there in 10 minutes.
scumbag joe is history in a leadership position ;)
Beat me to it by this much.
Mine, too… but it was more symbolic.
that would be so sweet.
Obama has certain powers of persuasion. !!
I think he’s going to spank a lot of those *ssholes but good …
ABC Ohio to Obama Big, big one after Pennsylvaniz.
Noriega/Cornyn results? Anyone?
Callin in from MAINE here; don’t listen to the pundits: Collins is only 500 votes ahead of Allen. HOPE

Liddy’s gone, gone, gone…………….
What, did you throw a pail of water on her?
Thanks for that.
I don’t get it. Cornyn has more votes but is at 44%?
He is at 52 and 44/100%
PTL!!! Ain’t it sweet?
Oklahomans get to be embarrassed again with Inhofe.
That’s quite a shame, Andy Rice was a great candidate. He would have made a fine Senator. You have to wonder what folks see in a person like Inhofe.
NPR calls Virginia for Obama!
all year long!
That’s my hook and i’m stick’n to it.
CBS calls Virginia for Obama.
Wish I’d thought of it ;-)
Seems the good people of NC got around to explaining it wasn’t a sinecure.
NBC saying big announcements of states at 11, stay tuned.
Do the polls close in CA in ten minutes?
If we can’t get rid of McConnel the next best thing would be to strip Liarman of his diapper. Give it to David Vitter of La.
Yep
oh my!!
Any news on prop hate in california?
Any guesses which state will have the honor of putting Obama over 270?
I don’t really think it is question of who loves america more. it is simply the window from which you look and how that image reflects upon what you create.
Western states close. Don’t think there’ll be big surprises there.
Me too.
Indiana just flipped to blue! 8% still left to count!
McCain to conceed at 11pm
Cool!
please make it 58 so that HoJo provides not added utility to the Dems whatsoever…
Come on Prop 8!
Come on, Al Franken!
I’m sticking with my earlier prediction of McGramps by 1 point in Indiana (and still hoping I’m wrong).
I just don’t see where he picks up the votes from where the outstanding votes are right now here.
(did that make any sense at all?)
Amen.
Revolting.
to win with DIGNITY TWEETY
WHAAAAT?
indiana flipped to Obie
One minute left before the polls close on the West Coast.
Take it away CTuttle!
I would think most likely California.
Murtha!!!!
DRIIIIIIIIIIIINK!!!
I’d be proud!
MSNBC calling it for OBAMA!!!
Palin’s going to hold out and hold the front at the Alaskan border.
I am sooo happy Larry Kissell wins in NC!!
CNN calling for Obama!!!!!
local npr station (wbur boston) discussion is that republicans in new england will have to declare their independence from the national R party if they are not going to be a dead party here.
NBC calls it for Obama!!!!!!
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Indiana just flipped to blue! 8% still left to count!
Amazing. It comes down to Wayne County (Richmond). Red area, but with a decent sized AA populace.
I’m officially still at – ‘I dunno.’
(there’s still some outstanding up in the heavily D northeast corner too)
NPR just called Florida for Obama!
CA WA BBC OBama wins!!
Calif. for Obama…over the top
DRINK!!!!!!!
President Obama.
YES!!!!
MSNBC just called it.
Obama is the 44th President of the United States of America!
I wish my parents were alive to see an African-American win prez. Dad was born in 1903 and Mom in 1906, and both died in the early 90s.
They saw incredible changes in their lifetimes. The families of both were incredibly poor, so just the introduction of electricity was important. WW1, WW2, radio, TV, depression (they were married in 1932), post-WW2 boom, etc, etc. I was the person who made them sit down at a dinner table with a Af-Amer person for the first time. They were not racists, but the country was so different in their era. They lived through so much change, and thrived, I am sad that they did not live to see this day.
YES! YES! YES!
Whooo—–Hooooo!!!! It’s all over but the crying! ;-)
It’s official, Barack Obama is the Presiden Elect !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
congrats to DS!!! (17 year old friend and big obama volunteer in central florida)
I believe the moment has come, congratulations everyone!
umm, that should have been *northwest* corner….
How many have tears in their eyes????
Are you watching the crowd in Grant Park? That’s what AMerica really looks like. How wonderful !
So what if the Dems can’t get to 60. I would think even with 59, it will make it easier to peel off a few moderate Republicans, there would be a better chance. With the current 51 Dems they have now, it’s kind of impossible to get to 60, but with 59, it may be possible at least on some issues to override a filibuster. Some Republicans should be more open to ‘reason.’
Crying. & I’m not even an Obama fan. But hope that this election is a sea change for the US of A.
Florida for Obama!
Florida for Obama.
ABC Virginia for Obama
A more perfect union…
no obama fan here either. but i am a fan of lots of his supporters.
new thread from jane
But this victory is VERY good for our country whether you like the man or not. Another historic moment, among all the others people of our age have lived through. And a GOOD historic moment. If you are doubtful, think of how you would feel if the ballroom at the Phoenix Biltmore were errupting in joy right now.
Been there. Done that.
no doubt here.
a historical day.
my hopeful election was 2006 when the Ds took control of congress. i had worked hard for lamont and done a lot of phone banking for other races. i really believed that we had ended the war in iraq.
i was an idiot.
was?
hi raven.
And NPR has called the Hayes seat for Kissell.
Hey y’all…I have an admission to make:
I was wrong.
We didn’t need to get as down and dirty as I thought we would. I was wrong in believing we had to adopt their tactics to win. I’m not convinced we won’t need to in the future, but this time around, y’all were right and I was wrong.
I toast your rightness and my wrongness with cheap, plonk rum because I can’t afford anything better.
But by got, we beat the SHIT out of them. This is like the Niners and Denver in the Super Bowl. Ain’t it, Newt?
there he is – president elect obama!
No admissions necessary. Underneath, I was spoiling for a brawl.

When will CNN have the DVD of the highlights of the Campaign and tonight? I am ready to order it.
another blog post reports Atlanta TV as saying up to 2 million votes are not counted yet in GA. Don’t want to send any link, someone in Atlanta may know a lot more.
What a beautiful culmination to this story. It was marvelous, awe inspiring, to sit in the living room with my children and watch their future foretold in the words of a man who has the promise to be the greatest of us.
I am sorry that it looks as if my state will be sending Norm Coleman and Michelle Bachmann forth to stand as stumbling stones in the way of that future; but if these small minds are in anyway useful in honing the promise President Obama brings, then I will abide.
Nothing can tarnish this day, really. I told my son, this morning, this is the greatest day of your young life. I wasn’t wrong.
According to CNN’s Political Ticker Reid has called a meeting with the Lieberliar to discuss his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.
Apparently Senate Democrats are not happy with Rape Gurney Joe’s words about President-Elect Obama in St. Paul.
All I want to know is what took so damned long!
Well, he didn’t quote Cleavon Little (from Blazing Saddles.)
Ian is upstairs!
A Mandate for Progressivism and a Repudiation of Conservatism
I don’t know how they’re doing it, but I feel certain Repubs are stealing the state. We elected a Dem governor with 70% and yet McCain (R) is also given the state? Something is odd.
Also, for the first time ever, my mother had trouble voting on the touch-screen machine. She had to vote for Obama about 3 or 4 times to get it to stick. She was very upset and embarrassed at taking so long to vote. The election officials there just told her she wasn’t pressing the screen correctly (too hard or too light or something).
Of course we’re using the ES&S machines which are bad.
Don’t forget that it was overrun by snakes in 1903 and nobody lived there for about 5 years (everyone was afraid of walking on snakes, dontcha know).
Wicked place.
After a few of these I wanted to shout at the t.v.
NBC calls Texas for McCain!
Geez, Why don’t they just predict the sun will come up tomorrow?
However, I must add there were a few deep deep Red states which showed a little tinge of blue around the edges and their percentage wasn’t quite as high as it was with Reagan & Bush.
Apparently Virginians are now all Communists. Who knew?
