My deepest condolences to the Obama/Dunham family:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

To all the family and friends of Barack Obama’s grandmother Madelyn Payne Dunham:

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
A band of angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home

Sometimes I’m up and sometimes I’m down
Coming for to carry me home
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Coming for to carry me home

The brightest day that I can say
Coming for to carry me home
When Jesus washed my sins away,
Coming for to carry me home.

If I get there before you do
Coming for to carry me home
I’ll cut a hole and pull you through
Coming for to carry me home

If you get there before I do
Coming for to carry me home
Tell all my friends I’m coming too

I think Obama and his beloved Grandmother knew that they were saying good by to each other for the last time when he made his trip to Hawaii October 23-24th.

Raven is right. She would have been proud of him whether he became President or not. Grandmothers are just like that.

Can’t help but think that she will be looking down from a better plane with extra pride on November 4th. Grandmothers are like that too.

Perhaps I’ve been watching too much of this election, but I can’t help anticipating the McCain/FOX camp to make a ham-fisted attempt to spin this.

Guess what? They did:

HuffPost: HuffPost: RNC Hits Obama For Visit To Sick Grandmother

By Seth Colter Walls

Leaving no potential avenue of attack unexplored, the Republican National Committee has decided to bash Barack Obama over his October visit to see his ailing grandmother in Hawaii.

Words friggin’ fail me. I guess they must be hoping to provoke an “angry black man” response that they can then put in last-minute ads.

Thanks. It’s never easy. I’ve been prepared for a long time, made a point of visiting 5 or 6 weeks a year the past 7 years. I’m very fortunate that the companies I’ve worked for allowed me to telecommute as much as I did.

Raven, you’ve got it exactly right. As a mother of 4 sons and a daughter who are now around 50 years old, I know. Grandmother knew her grandson as no other ever can. It’s the person he is that filled her heart, regardless of how the world itself evaluated him.

I’m so glad she had time with Barak, Michelle, and the girls during his week in Hawaii. That he put all else aside and went to her near the end tells us much about him, as well as what she instilled in him. In the days ahead I think our country will owe her a debt of gratitude for her work.

Let’s all direct our purest thoughts of comfort toward Barak and his family.

My mother’s memorial service was last Saturday. We ended with Bob Marley Three Little Birds “Don’t worry about a thing, every little thing is gonna be alright” When the reverend played his final chord on the guitar IU scored at the nearby stadium and cannons were fired. The timing was uncanny, the cannons went off immediately as the last chord sounded.

Helen W D’Amico, July 9, 1919 - October 23, 2008. RIP.

I’ve heard conflicting reports on whether her vote for Obama via traveling board will be counted. I’m shameless in using her death in my GOTV in Indiana this year.
