In 2008, T. Boone Pickens is investing his money in trashing our opportunity for a sensible energy future.
In 2008, T. Boone Pickens is attempting to buy a yes vote on California’s Proposition 10 which would return $100s of millions (probably billions) into his pockets via mass (over) subsidy of natural gas trucks.
Californians … Prop 10 is not good environmentally, not good for energy security, not good fiscally, not good at all except, that is, for T Boone.
Pickens is now at $19 million (that can be tracked) expended in support of Proposition 10. The Consumer Federation of California has about $150k to oppose this (along with efforts of some environmental organizations).
For a great background and discussion of Prop 10, see
Pickens trying to pick Californians’ pockets at the excellent (and critically important) Climaticide Chronicles:
California´s Proposition 10 ballot measure (full text here PDF) is funded exclusively by Pickens´s company, Clean Energy Fuels Corp., via a Pickens front group with the deceptive name of Californians for Clean and Renewable Energy …
This measure would authorize the sale of $5 billion in general fund bonds to provide alternative energy rebates and incentives — but by the time the principal and the interest is paid off, it would squander at least $9.8 billion in taxpayer money on Pickens’ self-serving natural gas agenda.
The initiative deceptively reads like it’s supporting all alternative-fuel vehicles and renewable energy sources. But a closer read finds a laundry list of cash grabs
According to the California Progress Report
If you want cleaner air, you’ll be disappointed by Prop 10. The initiative does nothing to ratchet up existing clean air requirements. Remarkably, Prop 10 defines "clean alternative" vehicles to exclude hybrids and to include natural gas powered vehicles, provided their emissions are no worse than the maximum pollution levels already required for gasoline or diesel powered vehicles. That’s a neat trick: re-label the status quo as clean and you qualify for a big tax handout – provided, of course, you fill up at Mr. Pickens’ natural gas stations.
JohnnyRook concludes:
Proposition 10 is so bad that it is opposed not only by environmental and consumer groups, but also by the California Chamber of Commerce, which publicly announced it´s opposition …
The simple fact is that T. Boone Pickens is still what he´s always been: a flim-flam man on the grandest of scales.
The latest slick effort: an attempt to confuse people into thinking that Barack Obama supports Proposition 10.
The list of organizations signed up against Proposition 10 is extensive and compelling from Sierra Club to CARS (Consumers for Automobile Reliability and Safety ) to the California Taxpayers Association (Cal-Tax) to the California Chamber of Commerce to the California Labor Federation. When labor and business are combined along with the environmental organizations, perhaps it is time to listen. And, note all the newspapers that have signed up as well.
Simply put: California, the nation, and the globe will be better off if Californians unite to say NO to Proposition 10.
Beyond Proposition 10 and the flim-flam of The Pickens’ Plan
We’ve all seen them, no? T. Boone Pickens staring out of the TV, speaking about how no one else has a plan, and that he has the plan to save the nation from its oil addiction. The flim-flam man working his mischief. For anyone interested in learning more about the weaknesses and issues of The Pikens’ Plan, here is a short list of valuable discussions:

About Firedoglake
In the past, Pickens has sometimes placed bad bets. Let’s hope that his bet that California’s voters are for sale turns out to be wrong.
Pickens has always been a sleazy opportunist. He never backs anything or anybody unless he stands to make a fortune off it.
Don’t mind someone making money or even making a fortune. I do mind when they do damage to the common good in search of that profit.
Digg it
Are there polls showing how voters are leaning on this and Prop 8? I am not in California and only know about the various propositions through Left Blogistan, so I have no feel how the props are faring.
Haven’t seen anything on Prop 10.
I was at a reception at Pickens’ penthouse in Dallas years ago when I witnessed him outlining his plan to capture as much surface water in Texas as he could. I was floored by his lack of consciousness for anything other than the comodity water. It was all money and opportunity, nothing more – no people, no environment, nothing but his absolute right to do whatever he thought a good idea for himself.
T Boone is an interesting character. He began telling people to get out of oil five years ago – and began divesting himself of oil stocks himself. I regarded that as good advice. Guys like him are nothing if not self interested.
His latest adventure is a big push for wind and natural gas. I have looked at his plans and think that the wind thing is just cover for the gas thing. While natural gas is not as dirty as oil – it is still a fossil fuel and still contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
There’s an old adage – follow the money. That way you find out what he’s really up to. The fact that he’s spending this much money on a proposition like this is like waving one hundred red flags in front of the entire herd of bulls at Pamplona.
I’m betting you’re right.
Great post!
uh-oh. from calitics:
Dugg your Digg Neuro!! How goes it this evening?/
And as for prop 10 I don’t know of anyone who is voting for it! It seems to be known that it is nothing but Corporate welfare for T Boone Pickens!!
I just saw LooHoo reporting a few threads back that Prop 8 did not have majority support. I don’t remember what the actual numbers were, but it was encouraging.
How did this get worded the way it did on the ballot? It sounded like chocolate pie to me. It was the only time I’ve had to re-do my mail-in ballot ever!
Hey, be nice.
If all the other energy tycoons are making it big, why should T. Boone be left out?
Gosh, there were two polls from Julia Rosen of Calitics. Both were up by a few points for No on 8.
Gonna check my email now.
From the Calitics on 10 info website:
Snip
Particularly when at taxpayer expense.
Because he enough for me and you and he is not sharing sumna Bit*h thats why!!
Check it out – that CNG-powered Bentley is not cheap to operate.
What Cali needs to do is pass an initiative outlawing the initiative process.
That and an end to the two thirds requirement for a budget to pass. That requirement alone costs the state and tax payers much to much money!
late nite upstairs
Sigh …
Thank you very much for posting that … sadly, I am not surprised. It is a vaguely worded, seemingly sound idea that is backed by a lot of money. Hmmm … Sort of like The Pickens’ Plan.
Thank you so much for this post. I’ve been sadly overwhelmed with the Pickens Plan. Everyone seems to be drinking his Kool Aide. In response to Gnome de Plume’s comment at 7, an interesting article that lays out his devious manipulation of state legislatures is found at: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/…..MHM8z9IMd4
That above article explains how he essentially is attempting to drain the Ogalla. Indeed he says water is the new liquid gold!
