As I write, a few miles away witches and other pagans create altars they’ve imagined over the last months, witches in the choir prepare to perform the songs they’ve practiced, and witches collect the last few names of the Beloved Dead to be recited at this evening’s Spiral Dance. Last night above the towers of the Golden Gate I sat beneath the wild sky upon the Marin Headlands with witches as we honored their Beloved Dead. We heard a lot of names: the woman reading the list alone had lost six of her family this last year. Afterwards, we shared a dangerous feast of cider and cookies. Why does Sarah Palin embrace "leaders" who openly preach religious war against the millions of American pagans practicing their freedom to worship?
At two key points bracketing most of 2008 GOP vice-presidential Candidate Sarah Palin’s meteoric rise to political prominence, we find Palin tied to self-described witch-hunters. Not one, but two.
That alone is striking enough but Sarah Palin is also closely associated with an insurgent religious movement, within Christianity, whose members claim to cure crime and addiction by casting out demons, both from individuals and from whole geographic areas, and by hounding accused witches out of cities, towns, and U.S. states.
As the top leader of the New Apostolic Reformation, which extensive evidence suggests is Sarah Palin’s chosen religious and political movement, C. Peter Wagner proclaimed, on June 21, 2006, that "God has declared through His prophets that the wealth of the wicked will be released to the Kingdom of God," and Wagner declared, threateningly, "the enemies’ camp will be plundered."
Muthee also stated "The Bible says the wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous. [snip]
Sarah Palin was in the audience. Minutes later, she was anointed, and blessed, with the laying on of hands.
Thomas Muthee is a top leader in C. Peter Wagner’s movement, an internationally known celebrity in the New Apostolic Reformation and a personal friend of Wagner.
Oh, and when he’s not laying on hands to consecrate Dominionst hate-preachers and pols, Muthee conducts literal witch-hunts in Africa.
Who are these terrible pagans Sarah Palin’s hate-cult singles out for religious persecution?
This week the heathen Hearst paper revealed the Halloween rite of the pagans who walk among us:
The fast-growing community’s biggest holiday – or sabbat, as holidays are also called – Samhain, arrives this weekend, mixing themes of harvest, renewal and communing with the dead.
The latter isn’t all that wacky, and in fact sounds like a form of prayer, with the addition of a celebratory "spiral dance." [snip]
Deborah Oak Cooper, a member of the Reclaiming collective [said]: "At the Spiral Dance (expected to draw more than 1,000 celebrants to Kezar Pavilion on Saturday), there’s a trance journey, where you go to the Isle of Apples and visit your beloved dead. It’s a meditation period: You go and look around and see who wants to visit."
Meditation? Sounds downright socialist. Better call the banks so they can get a cut.
And apples? Better call Big Ag Chem. Those apples may be pesticide-free: that’s downright Communist.
I grew up attending tolerant mainstream Protestant churches, alongside my cousins in Catholic school. I happened to read Sibyl Leek: we’d all seen the Wizard Of Oz. That was only forty years ago, but even my third-grade class learned the Constitution guaranteed us freedom to worship — or not — as we chose. My third-grade class also learned of the madmen who twenty years before brought religious hatred to millions: the name we learned for them was Nazis. We heard of them at home, too: every May our fathers remembered their friends who died to defeat the Nazis.
Now the best one of America’s two major parties can offer for national office is a murderous deluded tool who prays for the day she and the GOP create their own hate machine and persecute unbelievers.
Even in third grade, I knew religion wasn’t perfect: my older cousins shared uneasy jokes about avoiding a certain Father on missionary trips to Baja. Seems the good Father enjoyed some decidedly non-missionary positions.
In the US, the Bay Area is the New Rome for many pagan groups. Just as with other faiths, one local pagan group took vigorous action to expel a leader who abused his position for sex. In contrast, the most prominent local pagan group took vigorous action to conceal theft, forgery, and embezzlement when a Witchcamp teacher and her spouse abused the campers’ trust.
Polytheists and pagans are humans, capable of all the flaws and transgressions we can read about priests of Rome and fundy pastors. In other words, pagan religious groups look and act pretty much like all the other religious groups I’ve ever worshipped in, been around, or heard of. Whatever the transcendent belief(s) may be, some of the believers will soar. Others will face-plant. "Those" pagans in the SF Gate article on Samhain are "us". No better, no worse.
Yet Sister Sarah Palin wants to single out the pagans and witches among us — our neighbors –for persecution. Over at Talk2Action, Bruce Wilson looks at a real horror show in his piece Imagining a Witchcraft-Fighting Vice-President.
Bruce asks a great question, but I’m still stuck on another Halloween nightmare: How did America end up with a Constitutional apostate on a "mainstream" party’s ticket?
I’d be tempted to say Divine punishment for religious persecution of the First Peoples, but pagans don’t believe in "original sin" or "divine punishment".
"You find magic from your God: we find magic everywhere"
Bright blessings – and blessed be.

How’s everyone enjoying their Halloween candy?
The absolute ignorance is staggering.
I have long suspected that the Right has been dragging us back to the eleventh century, Now they have their Holy Princess as a figurehead.
What absolute tripe.
Scientists long ago conceded that the universe had to have come about through the actions of a superior intelligence.
Religion is as old as mankind and just as diverse, but it is universal.
Witch hunters as Whitehouse advisors?
OH FUCK NO!!
Freedom of or freedom from?
Hiya, Kirk
The fast-growing community’s biggest holiday – or sabbat, as holidays are also called – Samhain, arrives this weekend, mixing themes of harvest, renewal and communing with the dead.
Scaaary…
“Harvest”? In the *fall*?
“Renewal”? Oh my.
“Communing with the dead”? Is that like praying to saints and other biblical figures? (I’m pretty sure that the bible doesn’t have any surviving cast members)
Good evening Kirk.
Like many here, I grew up in a Christian tradition that preached understanding and tolerance of people of different beliefs. It was frowned upon to condemn others because they believed differently.
When did it become so fashionable to hate, as loudly and publicly as possible, people who are not Christian cultists?
I don’t really know for sure, but I first noticed it after Roe v Wade passed and the so-called Moral Majority (not) was formed. They been hatin’ a long old time.
I hab a code an’ scotch doesn’t help.
Doesn’t hurt either.
Religion has killed more people than all the wars combined.
Amazingly enough, they almost all promote tolerance, with their fingers crossed behind their backs.
Sarah Palin is turning out to be one whacked out lady. I can’t wait to see the reaction of the Matriarchs around the Hamptons to her ignorance.
She talks like she is from Minnesota and acts like she grew up in the bayous of louisiana with a healthy dose of Cabin fever from being snowed in all winter.
Ahhhh, a little southern comfort for the dragon. Hope you feel better soon. By Tuesday, at least.
a bartender friend of mine (I used to have *lots* of bartender friends) one night when I walked in with a cold, gave me a shot of something called ‘rock and rye’.
Don’t know if it’s still around, but it worked like a charm. One shot.
Lots of Pagans in the Army I suppose Sarah doesn’t care about that.
Alison Gross, the ugliest witch in the north country.
‘Why does Sarah Palin embrace “leaders” who openly preach religious war against the millions of American pagans practicing their freedom to worship?’
Because they want us to cook them and eat them.
Very accommodating, these zealots
;>)
I’ll be in line with bells on. And touching Rethugs to distribute the wealth. Serve ‘em right.
db!
ooooooooooooo, not too far off topic, but sooo rich – from the Economist, (by way of Spook and Muffin)
Hiya Teddy. Welcome to you and everyone else here.
DB! Love it.
Sorry to log off, folks: power fluctuations in progress.
(and loved your excellent question) :)
What a good song! Thanks. Takes me back.
Rye Whiskey, rock candy syrup, and fruit juices, with slices of the fruit all in a bottle. From Urban Dictionary.
Ho boy, that’ll clear yer head up in a hurry.
Hello Teddy. Good work keeping the heat up on that indecent proposition Californians are considering.We just might make it back to the late 19th century this time, after all.
;>)
Good point, jayt!
It sounds like Sarah is ok with redistributing the wealth she just thinks its ok to take it from those who don’t believe her faith.
I’m guessing that includes Catholics, Jews and other Protestants who ate not her faith.
Is that an actual Bible quote? If so I would guess it applies to the rich not the Pagans, like that quote about a rich man has less of a chance to get to heaven than a camel has of going through the eye of a needle.
Speaking of ignorant, I don’t normally peruse Politico, but I do surf FARK several times a day.
It seems some radio dudes in Canada got a hold of the Vice Presidential candidate for the Republican party, Sarah Palin, and convinced her she was talking to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, for over five minutes.
They plan to broadcast the results on election night.
YA know, I don’t care about freedom of religion because I’m not religious.
What *I* want is freedom FROM religion. Don’t be knockin’ on my door, don’t approach me in the street, the airport and don’t try to impose your medieval values on me
~~~Mod Note; let’s be careful with the references to violence~~~
It was on msnbc tonight. Funny as all hell.
slight change in subjects Kirk? But still well written.
I got a Digg open for Ya Kirk so the other Pups can Digg your Post!!
Hope you are Dry , warm and Toasty this rainy rainy evening here in the Bay Area… It’s coming down Cats and Dogs!! ops musta used the wrong spell!!
I wonder if some astute Christian scholar has collected all these supposed quotes from the Bible that these nutjobs like to spew out. I’d imagine they’d have enough to publish a new and improved Bible, translated by wingnuts.
jane and ari have posted on it too.
Canadians? Bunch of socialist fascists, America ought to annex them and burn their igloos down.
;>)
Sarah being punked and a Cheney endorsement all in one day. What could be better?!
It’s already gone viral.
I just got home and I don’t watch TV, no surprise I am a day late and a dollar short, you can’t get anything by Jane.
That’s just unbelievable. Barnacle must have spent the last 6 months in a coma. Nothing like throwing yer party under the bus.
“……wingnuts……”
The gospel according to wingnuts?
Sarah definitely would not like most of the people living here on the Hopi Reservation. What would she think about people who hang out with kachinas?
Yep. Couldn’t have thought of a better title meself.
Written by James Dobson. The first commandment would be to shower with your son. :)
Just open the door and lay on the floor
touchdown Gators!
kirk, this is a great post. Thank you and happy Samhain!! Hope to march with you in the streets tomorrow with on the day of the dead march. Thank you.
yeah, that was ugly. I’m watching Texas and Texas Tech. Think an upset might be inthe making (just as you said)
Just need convertin’. You betcha!
What bothers me most about Sarah and other Pentecostals I’ve known (I won’t say ALL Pentecostals because surely there are exceptions) is that they believe the end (salvation) justifies any means, starting with but not limited to shameless lying. It doesn’t matter HOW you bring new lambs into the fold, as long as you git ‘er done.
Who’s that knocking on my door?
Who’s that knocking on my door?
Said the fair young maiden.
It’s me and the crew
And we’re here for a *****
Said Barnacle Bill the Sailor
So very well put.
I can only hope she continues to serve as the anchor around the GOP’s feet for years to come.
It doesn’t stop with African witch hunters. Palin is supporting plenty of “spiritual soldiers for Christ” right here in the good ol’ USA:
LOL
egads KO is replaying all the low-lights from the primary campaigns
I’d like a little freedom from religion,thank you.
What, he didn’t replay the let’s punk Sarah call? No comments about Barnacle endorsing McSFB?
Amen.
he may get to it as the program progresses to the campaign between obama and unstable
Ouch….Mack looks nervous…
I’ll second that motion !!
Palin: “We will not allow a second Holocaust*”
*unless we get to conduct it.
omg
major earworm event
Thanks so much for this post, Kirk. I think sometimes that we’ll get gay marriage in all 50 states and out atheists running for federal office before a Wiccan is able to credibly be a political figure. I mean, those things would be great signs of tolerance and progress, but I expect that both LGBT folks and atheists are more popular and less feared than pagans.
Anyway, I hope you (and everyone else who practices) had a lovely Samhain and bright blessings to you :)
One best mate growing up had a mother who was forever calling him a heathen. I liked the sound of the word and must have wanted to be one too. Strange how sometimes what you want will come about. Best of Samhain
